The blogger investigated by the FBI and ultimately arrested in August for leaking nine songs from Guns N’ Roses’ Chinese Democracy pleaded not guilty in his first court appearance yesterday. Kevin “Skwerl” Cogill is charged with violating federal copyright law. If convicted, Cogill faces three years in prison, and five years if its determined Cogill posted the songs for commercial gain. Reps for GNR insist their main intention is to find the “original source” of the leaks. “If legal proceedings come my way, I’ll face them 100 percent,” Cogill told Rock Daily back in June when the leaks first surfaced. “I’m not afraid of that. I did what I did, and I’ll face the music if I have to.” Since his arrest, Cogill has set up a PayPal account to raise funds for his legal fees. No trial date has been set yet.

He’s only trying to do something the dinosaur record industry can’t seem to do- light a fire under someone’s ass and just get this damn thing, for chrissakes, so we can move on.

Hope he gets convicted | 10/21/2008, 1:17 pm EST

Copyright infringement is no joke. Illegal downloading and streaming is succeeding in doing what the religious right has failed at for 3 generations now. Kill rock ‘n roll. No matter what you think of the recording industry, the only people who really get screwed are the musicians. Isn’t it sad that the only major acts to come on the scene in the last few years are American Idol alums? Anyone confused as to why there are no hot music scenes in this country anymore? No Hollywood, no Seattle, no Athens, Ga. There may never be another Metallica because downloading has caused the record companies to not support up and comers. They need to fry this guy, and hopefully it will soon spell the end of illegal downloading.

If you’ve every been in jail and in court, you’d know that one day of each is more than enough for this particular “crime”.

Until the music industry takes a long look in the mirror and completely reforms with cutomer service being its number one priority, this will continue to happen, and deservedly so.

I agree with Hope He Gets Convicted. Illegal downloading has killed rock n roll. Look what it’s done to Metallica. This guy ought to fry.

The media evolves in duality with society. Information now can be digitalized for its sharing and storage. Its easier to have your songs in a small digital device, but now that information can get stolen easily. New media and technology comes with repercussions, lets embrace it and think about new things that can solve that problem… ups, those solutions will come with repercussions too!

@”Copyright infringement is no joke”

Yes it is. People pirated in the 1990s. They were called bootlegs. The cat is out of the bag. Same thing with sex and drugs.

Good parents, morals, and role models prevent those things. Same thing with music. If people are going to steal music, they’ll steal music. If they want to have sex, they’ll have sex.

It’s their own personal choice. If they dig the record, they’ll buy it. Maybe later in life they’ll stop.

But trying to stop illegal downloading is silly. It’s crying over spilt milk. A ton of people who download the music go to shows, buy merch, etc. It’s only punishing the fanbase.

Deal with it.

reality check | 10/21/2008, 11:32 pm EST

Although not a fan of illeagal downloading; the record industry’s business model is as broken as wall street’s – and both choose to put out fires rather then let a phoenix rise from the ashes.

GNR is gay | 10/21/2008, 11:39 pm EST

No one is gonna buy Chinese Democracy anywasy. Why do they care if someone steals it?
GNR was decent once but without Slash theyre nothing. Skip Chinese Democracy
and by DEAR SCIENCE or MIRCOCASTLES

Accountability=Responsibility | 10/21/2008, 11:53 pm EST

The thing I have a problem with is that he’s pleading not guilty after boasting like an idiot that he would “face the music” if he had to. Dude needs to cowboy his a$$ up and take responsibility…

You’re only as good as your word, holmes…

god | 10/22/2008, 7:14 am EST

i agree. cutting corners on an evil industry just because you want a shitty cd is soooooooooo criminal. some of you are really buying into this forced consumer bullshit

THAT GUY IS ON COKE

Stitch | 10/26/2008, 8:37 am EST

I’ve been waiting for years for this album, but if I can get it earlier and for free, what do you think I’ll do?
Music really doesn’t earn the recording artist as much as it used to. The real money is really made in live shows and merch, anyway. The sooner people realise that, the better off people will be.
