Chris Cornell Brings Sexy Back But Gets Upstaged By Timbaland

The idea was for Timbaland to warm up the crowd, but the super-producer’s hour-and-a-half set on Friday night at Denver’s packed Ogden Theatre was so boisterous, intimate, funky and funny that the headliner, singer Chris Cornell (Timbo’s latest client), never really had a chance. Barely moving more than a raised eyebrow, Timbaland conducted his hot seven-piece band from James Brown-style groove workouts like “Oh Timbaland” to his underrated house-party anthem “Bounce.”

Barely singing, rapping or even speaking much throughout the songs, the deadpan Timbaland’s main job was to be a presence, holding the crowd’s attention so his super-tight “junkyard band” could do most of the work. Although he tossed out a few songs from his album due in February, he mostly stuck to last year’s Shock Value, including the closing “Throw It On Me,” which recalled OutKast’s propulsive “B.O.B.” and couldn’t help but transition into “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Expectations were therefore high for Cornell, the former Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman. For a few minutes between sets, the crowd seemed especially pumped up for him. Would he perform with Timbaland’s band? Would the singer known for punk and metal anthems turn into a funk balladeer? Would he do the splits? Unfortunately, most of Timbaland’s band packed up their gear and walked off the stage.

That was an omen. Cornell’s new sound had the feel of ’80s Peter Gabriel, with two metal guitarists roaming the stage and a drummer playing rigid house-music beats as two keyboardists created a swirling, soothing synth sound to match his high-pitched vocals. Cornell exclusively did songs from Scream, opening with “Part of Me,” which set a mild hip-hop rhythm to the chorus “That bitch ain’t a part of me.”

Fortunately, Cornell has enough sex appeal to hold just about any crowd’s attention. He and his low-slung jeans admirably redeemed the new material until the very end. At that point, he did his two best songs, “Watch Out,” a hip-hop-spiced rock anthem that came close to matching Timbaland’s energy, and a stripped-down ballad about loneliness called “Two Drink Minimum.” But if this was a battle of the bands, it was no contest.

I don’t even know Chris Cornell anymore. I feel like burning my Soundgarden discs.

dont burn them! i saw chris cornell last year and it was incredible! he just needs to get this out of his system or something :(

“Would the singer known for punk and metal anthems turn into a funk balladeer?..”

WTF? When did Cornell ever churn out punk and metal anthems? I don’t think this writer knows much about Cornell’s past. He sang in a grunge band called Soundgarden dude! “Loud Love” was their first and best. And as of now, it looks like Cornell is going through some kind of mid-life crisis.

Josh | 10/20/2008, 3:57 pm EST

How the mighty have fallen. I used to really respect this guy, but in the past 5 or 6 years it’s become obvious he’s a real prima donna.

jan | 10/20/2008, 8:33 pm EST

Like it or not.. I give CC a ton of credit for going against the grain with “Scream”. I don’t know the man, but It doesn’t appear that the success or failure of a particular album sways him in any particular genre direction for future projects. He gonna continue do what he wants to do for his own satisfaction, not for mine or yours.

Just 0.02

Cult of Soundgarden | 10/20/2008, 9:28 pm EST

Chris Cornell is God and like all atheists someone actually dares to defy him with outrageous claims-Timbaland upstaged Cornell. Blasphemy! Pure hate speech, “But Timbaland stood there while 7 other guys did all the work.” We’ll see who has the last laugh when I go to all the bookstores and bring these magazines into the restroom.

E-Dogg | 10/20/2008, 10:35 pm EST

The writer of this article obviously doesn’t know much about Chris Cornell, his musical history, or any of the reasoning behind his recent collaboration with Timbaland.

Cornell is a genius and he has tested the boundaries of his musical “genres” in the past. Who is to define his voice by any single genre? To do so is an insult to his artistic integrity. Plus, as someone else already mentioned here . . . who the hell said Cornell was “punk” and “metal,” anyway?

“Midlife crisis” or not, I think the new songs are awesome and I wish that I had the opportunity to see him live . . . and to see Tim’s band, too. I CAN’T WAIT for the new album . . . and when it comes out I won’t be looking for Rolling Stone’s opinion of it, either.

With Love,

“E-Dogg”

Carl | 10/20/2008, 10:51 pm EST

This is insane. As a fan of all the the bands he’s been in (Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden, Audioslave and even his first CD Euphoria Morning) I’ve been pretty much stunned by the new music he’s putting out. We’re talking about arguably one of the top 5 voices in the history of rock, and he’s singing crap ballads over hip-hop beats. Its insulting and its garbage. He just wants to have one last hurrah before his window closes.

matt | 10/21/2008, 1:26 am EST

This new stuff is not my cup of tea, but it’s unfair to call him a sellout. If anything, the easiest thing to do would be to reunite Soundgarden. I appreciate Cornell as an artist, and even though I don’t care for his Timbaland stuff, he’s still a naturally gifted singer. There’s no denying that.

James | 10/21/2008, 2:07 am EST

F*ck everbody hating- hes trying something new! Give it a chance, i for one like it.

Evan Faine | 10/21/2008, 4:42 am EST

Timb”a”land (what a fucking retarded name, to begin with) is an untalanted hack.

Let’s just say, they went from one shitty set, to another shitty set, and all in all, it was an utterly shit night for anyone in *that* crowd.

Talentless douche and sell-out – together on the same stage! Yipee.

I am not Iron Man | 10/21/2008, 4:51 am EST

Congratulations Timbaland, on one more well-delivered nail in the coffin of Rock n’ Roll.

You’ve taken the man who might possibly be the best rock singer alive and turned him into Sulking Justin Timberlake sound-a-like. I didn’t think it was possible.

I wonder if it wasn’t all part of your plot: build him up and then show him up. As always selling the message:

Rock, peeps: it’s so over. Timbaland is where it’s at now. Say goodbye to your old heroes, your romantic visions of long-haired guitar gods sweating and screaming, your crowd surfing, your strange idea that three, four, five, six people could make the loudest noise on the planet and become immortal.

Timbaland lives. Beats, man. Beats and rhymes, street cred and bad grammar. Street cred yo. The electronic rhythm mixes of the future are inescapable.

These are dark days for a rock fan. Dark days indeed.

North Dakota Nick | 10/21/2008, 4:58 am EST

CC is still the man.

Steel Dragon \m/ | 10/21/2008, 9:09 am EST

One of the Top 5 best voices in rock history?? You all must be smoking some serious shit!!

outshined39 | 10/21/2008, 9:59 am EST

I’ve been a fan of Cornell’s for 20 years and pretty much loved all of his music-seen him live in his various incarnations more times than I can count-no one can dispute that guy is an amazing vocalist and musician, but Lord Almighty, I cannot for the life of me embrace any of the new stuff, except maybe “two Drink Minimum”. I’m all for an artist going in new directions-I can appreciate that-Euphoria Morning was a new direction for Cornell and that album is a masterpiece!! For that matter Superunknown was completely different than Badmotorfinger.

What I’ve heard so far, is generic, hip hop crap and I LIKE timbaland-I like what he did with Justin and Nelly-

“That bitch ain’t a part of me”-what part of that lyric is GENUIS?

Please-this from the guy who has written some of the most beautiful and haunting lyrics in rock music-in any genre of music. WTF???! I’m getting pissed off just writing this.

to I am Not Iron Man | 10/21/2008, 10:08 am EST

One of the best rock singers alive? Are you kidding?

to I am not iron man | 10/21/2008, 10:31 am EST

Dumbest post ever, moron.

stupid Timbaland | 10/21/2008, 10:33 am EST

Timbaland is a complete putz. Cornell rocks. Screw Timbaland. Screw that hip-hop crap. Screw the dorks that listen to it. Just stupid.

Looking for that Lost Beat | 10/21/2008, 10:41 am EST

Chris has been with me since a long time now and his music had helped me through long periods of depression. His words gave me the hope that there’s light at the end of the tunnel (and it’s not a train).

The work he did with Timberland is shallow, void of meaning. Ground Zero is a load of yelps from the zoo. I can’t even listen to any of the new tracks.
Sorry, it’s not for me. I never knew I’d be turned off by one of my favourite singers.
There was once a time I never stopped listening to Cornell/Soundgarden/Audioslave . I could never imagine the day that this would happen.
Now I’m appreciating work from other artists. There is so much talent out there and all we need to do is find it.
Start with Victor Krummenacher’s Patriarch’s Blues. You’ll be amazed. Best album of the year, I think.

ozzie | 10/21/2008, 10:45 am EST

I think it’s bold to do something like this whether you like it or not. Why repeat the same thing over and over again until your irrelevant? Soundgarden is over with, get over it, he has.

Nabill | 10/21/2008, 2:20 pm EST

Chris Cornell is definitely on the Mount Rushmore of Rock Singers.

guitar_davey | 10/21/2008, 2:30 pm EST

Personally, I have no issue with any artist I like trying something new. The issue here is that Chris Cornell isn’t doing anything new–he’s jumping onto the soulless trend of overproduced bubblegum pop. Don’t be fooled–they’ll trick you into thinking this is edgier, but bubblegum pop is just marketed that way these days.

Matt | 10/21/2008, 3:05 pm EST

Considering the writer was more concerned about sex appeal and what the band was wearing, I think I’ll just ignore this review.

REAL | 10/21/2008, 4:06 pm EST

Before audioslave, i did’nt know who cris cornell was. I for one listen to all music that catches my ear. And i know good music when i hear it. His new singles are the s..t.

Jeff | 10/21/2008, 7:58 pm EST

If anyone has heard Chris Cornell’s live in Sweden recording, it is musical perfection. This is what I was hoping for in his solo work.

… but a musician can do whatever the hell he wants because it is their music. But isn’t timbaland a shitty brand of hiking shoes??? and doesent the world have enough cookie-cutter, dance trash. The worst part is it will outsell all his solo records that he put thought, talent and emotion into.

we suck

Schultz | 10/22/2008, 11:18 am EST

I applaud Cornell for trying new things – but he will always be the singer of Soundgarden to me! And yes one of the best ROCK voices ever!

Whatever he is doing now is just fluff…

Kyle | 10/22/2008, 5:44 pm EST

This reviewer has got to be KIDDING! I was at this show and while Cornell definitely wasn’t that good, Timbaland SUCKED! Apparently this reviewer couldn’t tell that EVERYTHING was pre-recorded tracks, the drummer and bassist weren’t even playing the correct stuff most of the time and Tim stood there while pre-recorded vocal tracks played. Might as well have put a cd on or plugged an ipod into the soundboard!

The Sound Gardener | 10/22/2008, 10:56 pm EST

Chris’s vocals are amazing, but Timbaland sucks! I like the hip-hop direction but the instruments are horrible; I could do better with my computer and that isn’t saying much.

Long Gone = crap
Watch Out = Better live

Ground Zero – Aside from the yelping its good

Scream – decent
Two Drinks A Minimum – Awesome

Part Of Me – fun

Hi Chirs…I’m direction…You appear to be lost.

I’m speechless. I thought this was some kind of sick twisted joke. This horrific generic bullshit music that Cornell is putting out right now just baffles me.It’s complete garbage and a far cry from his Soundgarden glory. I just don’t understand why he’s doing this. Is it money? Drugs? Mid-Life Crisis?

He’s making a mockery of himself and pissing all over his art and talent doing this crap. Why is he out their slugging around with the most vile bubblegum ass clown Timbaland.

This is both horrifying and pathetic at the same time.

I refuse to believe this is true. I think “real” Chris Cornell has been abducted by aliens. And whoever this douchebag is that is in his body right now is just some cheap hack imposter.

It’s the only explanation for this headache jibberish music that we’re hearing.

Larry | 10/23/2008, 3:00 pm EST

What is next, Eddie Vedder with Xtina? Come on Chris I have listened to you for 20 years and this is what it has come to? Go back and listen to Louder then Love or Ultamega and get the mojo back. I’m all for something new, but this is crap. Next thing I know you will be hosting a TV show like Navarro? The 90’s rock gods are not ageing very cool.

Gonzalo | 10/24/2008, 9:35 am EST

Since 1994 I heard his music more than any other staf, but now I think this is too much.
I rather Down on the upside for me, thats all Im saying.

Thanks cornell but your credit line with me, its over.

What’s next? Chris Cornell and Justin Timberlake duetting on “I got You Babe?”

ByTheWay | 10/25/2008, 3:09 am EST

I think its clear this move is purely financially motivated. But Chris is kind of shrugging off the same group of fans that got him rich in the first place. I think Chris Cornell is one of the best rock vocalists ever (top 5), and it just hurts to hear this. I grew up when Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains were dropping classic albums.

The music had died. I wonder what kids in high school will be listening to when they turn 30. Will they still think the Yin Yang Twins are cool? Rock used to be dangerous, now its a joke.

tentotwo | 10/25/2008, 12:46 pm EST

(from RS article on down on the upside)
Cornell describes the last number as a song that addresses the dearth of good original music today. “It’s about how loads of bands are imitating something that already exists,” he says. “Following a formula is what seems to be successful right now.”

fucking ironic!

carrie die hard cc fan | 10/25/2008, 5:46 pm EST

Well… I love chris and whatever direction he goes, I will still be his true fan. He is a musical genius and I am glad he is trying new things… shame on you for saying your a fan but dropping him because he stepped out of the box..

Everybody is a critic!!!

Sandy | 10/26/2008, 1:51 pm EST

I am always amazed at what people see. I saw Chris’s show last night at HOB in Hollywood and all I can say is AMAZING! His new music touches the soul and as far as the crowd well they didn’t stop clapping and begged him to come back for more which he did! Don’t make assumptions on this album, I promise it will become historic.

nick | 10/29/2008, 7:10 pm EST

for those who dont like his new stuff thats fine, everyone has their opinion, but its still his voice and lyrics a fan should appreciate that, for those who are like screw chris ur a sell out and im done with listenin to you, when he puts out another album that may be more ur type dont come running back, stay a true fan…

Anonymous | 11/9/2008, 2:56 pm EST

its a real shame people cant enjoy diversity. Its personal taste you like what you like . the guy is an artist they dont write for one type of person -they go with what the feel at the time.if you dont like it dont buy it -listen to the old stuff.doesnt mean hes lost his talent it just means he doesnt appeal to you anymore but this is coming from a guy that listens to anything from a good yodel to death metal

Anonymous | 11/16/2008, 7:40 pm EST

just goes to show you kim thayil, ben shepherd and matt cameron were the real talent. cornells got nothing left..except this generic shit.

PEACE,AND LOVE D.GARCIA

Anonymous | 1/26/2009, 12:04 pm EST

Who’s to say what ‘generic music’ is anyway?

I hate all this arrogance surrounded in music. i.e. its cool to like one kind of music and uncool to like others. Thats b/s. Whos to say what is cool and uncool. You like what you like. Thats how it is.

You could argue that chris’ old stuff was generic. Rock n roll isnt new…his old stuff was about the same stuff every other rock n roll artist sings about.

But hey, I love Chris Cornell. But I like what I like and not what I think I should like. Timbalands a good artist too. Thats why hes the one selling millions of albums.

Mark | 2/8/2009, 12:56 pm EST

Get over yourselves. It’s music. If you like it, listen, if you don’t, turn it off.
An artist can re-release the same song his whole career or like Chris can mix it up and try a new direction. This breaks the monotony for himself and the listener. This is also why Chris remains a star after more than 20 years in the Biz. Cheers Chris for all the great tunes and please keep em coming.

Thom | 3/5/2009, 2:36 pm EST

IT’S NOT NEW. STOP SAYING HE’S TRYING SOMETHING NEW. IT’S TEENYBOPPER CRAP. HE’S OBVIOUSLY GOIN THROUGH A MIDLIFE CRISIS.

“Upstaged”? Chris, fire your entire crew for brain washing you and get back to your roots my man. Your a rocker with a golden voice, your tribute to your friend “Temple of the Dog” and Soungarden days are you! That solo tune you did “Seasons”, was just you an acoustic guitar and is probably one of the best tunes you ever did. Again, get rid of any one recommending you do “something new”, because it’s something ridiculous! You can pull it off because you have magic…but…I just heard another new tune you did that just kept saying “b***h” over and over and over and over again…go back to square one, I know I tried to get a hold of you with WYLDSKY awhile back and I could never get in touch with you…Tyler would still love to work with you and is full of great music…that guy can write an amazing tune about laying tile. Seriously, it’s upsetting to see a true marvel being “Upstaged” in a headline.

I really enjoyed the album.
Its completely different than anything out there. No teeny-bop ism at all. Timbaland did a great job blending the tracks together – as if its one extended song. Something we havent heard in pop albums in over 10 years.
