Levi Stubbs, Jr., the lead singer of the Four Tops, died in his sleep today at his Detroit home after a long battle with multiple illnesses. He was 72. Cancer and a stroke forced Stubbs to stop touring with the famed Motown quartet in 2000. As the singer of the Four Tops, Stubbs’ baritone fueled classic hits like “Bernadette,” “Baby I Need Your Loving,” “It’s The Same Old Song,” “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)” and “Reach Out I’ll Be There.” The quartet has sold over 50 million records and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Stubbs also provided the voice of the man-eating plant in the film version of Little Shop of Horrors. With Stubbs’ passing, Abdul “Fakir” Duke is left as the lone living original Four Tops member. Stubbs last played with the Four Tops in July 2004 in Detroit to commemorate the quartet’s 50th anniversary.

A voice that fit so many styles, yet was also so distinct as to have emotion, power and soul that no other singer could ever duplicate. I had been lucky enough to have heard this voice live with the Tops several times and to have met the man. It was a case that the reality of the Tops and their lead voice did not diminish the legend. A great and singular voice is silent and greatly missed.

I will MISS Levi very much! He had an incredible singing voice-even tho he hadn’t been touring with the rest of the group for some time due to his health issues-it just wasn’t OR won’t be the SAME without Levi-LOVE their version of “Walk away Renee”!

RIP my friend-

levi is the -only- performer to whom i ever wrote a fan letter, so galvanizing were the tops & the temps in their 1985 tour. i rediscovered the vintage stuff in 2003 and have had it on my heart to pray for levi regularly since then. may he know how much he’s appreciated and that his legacy will continue to stand the test of time!

My condolences to the family and Duke Fakir. It is a sad day – Levi you will truly be missed along with the passion & emotion of your voice. Love the Tops version of McArthur Park !!

DUKE: CARRY ON!!!

Levi was amazing…so powerful and orginal a voice. I was lucky enough to see The Four Tops (the orginal 4) 5 times live. They were one of my fave bands to see live. A show that they did in 1987 at the Berklee Performance Center in Boston is still my second favorite live show of all time (underneath a show by the Who). They had soul to spare and their live show was as forceful it was as if you were at an actual ” rock” (not soul or R&B) concert. The best Motown quartet (the Temps were a quintet) ever and I am so sad that we have now lost Obie, Lawrence and now Levi.

Goodbye my Motown friends…I will wait for the reunion in the next life. Thanks for all the happiness you brought to me and my family!!

God Bless!

If there’s a rock and roll heaven, well you know they’ll have a hell of a lead vocalist. RIP Levi.

This is true because back then, you didn’t know what you know today. Good news from Off the Rack. One day they decide to ask permission from their respective parents and relatives because they are confident they are acting by the book. Court order if 15 years of age. Remember that ‘love is like childhood.

Losing Levi is just another great loss of our childhood memories. The Tops had a sound that will never be duplicated in our time. Along with the Temptations the music of the 60’s is now slowly fading away. Thank God we had those times and that great music.
