Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel Form Supergroup for Obama in NYC

Shortly after a roof-raising version of “Born To Run” featuring Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel and key members of both their bands, Bruce turned to the back of the stage at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom and said “We want to bring out the next President of the United States!” With that, Barack Obama took the stage to the loudest cheers of a very loud night. “What a magical evening,” Obama said to the crowd, who donated between $500 and $10,000 to his campaign and the DNC for tickets. “I just told Michelle backstage that the reason I’m running for president is because I can’t be Bruce Springsteen.” He went on to warn the crowd not to get “giddy” over his high poll numbers with less than three weeks left in the election. “Don’t underestimate the power of Democrats to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.”

One also can’t underestimate the ability of a ninety-minute set of Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel hits to bring a theater packed full of middle age tri-staters to screaming fits of hysterical joy. “Good evening bridge and tunnel elite,” Springsteen said in the middle of an early show mini acoustic set. “I know you spent a lot of money, but like you did with the vice presidential debate: lower your expectations.” Three songs into Billy Joel’s set — when Springsteen, his wife Patti Scialfa and E Street Band keyboardist Roy Bittan joined Joel and his band for a rousing “10th Avenue Freeze-Out” — expectations were already exceeded. From here, an only-for-Obama supergroup was born. Springsteen stayed onstage for the next hour and a half, with the setlist rotating back and forth between Joel and Springsteen classics. Each sang big portions of each others’ tunes, often with their eyes focused on what was surely a teleprompter.

The pairing worked surprisingly well. When Springsteen sang “they’re closing all the factories down” in “Allentown,” it sounded like it could have been a Darkness On The Edge Of Town outtake. Likewise, Joel made the sweet nostalgia of “Glory Days” seem like one of his own. “Movin’ Out” was dedicated to Bush and Cheney, and featured Springsteen singing the verse about “Mister Cacciatore’s” and the “Cadillac-ack-ack-ack-ack.” Other highlights included “Thunder Road,” “A Matter Of Trust,” “Spirit In The Night” and “New York State of Mind.” If anyone on earth was ready for such an evening, it was Joel’s multi-instrumentalist Crystal Taliefero, who toured with Springsteen in 1992/93 tour. Whether it was playing the bongos on “River Of Dreams” or filling in for Clarence on the sax “10th Avenue Freeze-Out,” the woman knew what she was doing.

Earlier in the night John Legend and India.Arie played “Ordinary People” and U2’s “Pride (In The Name of Love)” during a brief acoustic set. They came out again at the end for a cover of “People Get Ready” and the grand finale of “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours,” during which Barck and Michelle Obama stood center stage clapping and occasionally singing along. It was a great night — worth every penny — though there was much work to be done. As Caroline Kennedy told the crowd before the show while urging them to volunteer: “This is the last time you can have this much fun for the next twenty days.”

what are we lacking? what is in my backyard?
9/11 was a great tragedy, and i cried for weeks, because i’ve been there and i have friends there. oh, and people from my neighborhood died in the towers.
but what’s your point? i remember bush trying to tell the world that saddam was responsible for 9/11 - and what about the mass destruction weapons? THIS is the image i was talking about! bush is such a liar, and the world knew. americans too, obviously. thank god barack obama is elected your next president. he changed the image.

Funny you should mention stealing…all you have to do is mention ACORN…Obama’s “funny money” from overseas and the list of Democratic senators lining their pockets with Fannie Mae money (President Elect included) and we know just about all we need to know about STEALING.

Try again…you’ve failed DAILY KOS 101!!!!!

harpo | 11/11/2008, 2:19 pm EST

River Girl 03…live thru a 9/11(I mean be here in NYC) and then come back to me with your BS about how we are viewed overseas etc….your country and the rest of your European buddies are missing two things from birth…so while you are worried about everybody here being able to dream about “how things should be”….look to your own backyard and what you are “lacking!!!!

You sound like you’ve been reading too much Taibbi.

“tuffguy” above said “Neither one of these guys has gone to Walter Reed or had a benefit for wounded soldiers.” In fact, that is not true. Mr. Sprinsteen and his wife have visited wounded soldiers at Walter Reed. Mr. Springsteen also has a long history of supporting Vietnam veterans, performing many benefits and raising mondy to help veterans.

vivian | 10/25/2008, 9:43 am EST

america is still a profoundly racist country, against people of colour, both black and hispanic. That is not ready to change, and it is really sad because Obama is a man of grace, intelligence, and the best hope for america that will never be because of stupid ignorant voters who cannot find their own country on a map.

tuffguy | 10/25/2008, 9:01 am EST

More trendy white guilt from rich rock stars.
I always wonder where was Bruce when some of us were voting for Mondale or Dukakis? He never said a word.
He woke up for Kerry? And now he is a political activist?
Neither one of these guys has gone to Walter Reed or had a benefit for wounded soldiers.
Billy Joel is an elitist Hampton jew so no shock on his Barack support.
The old Bruce did his work at the grassroots level. Supporting working man’s causes.
FYi , I am former democrat now registed independent.
My Obama prize would be a $500 tax cut.
Is that really “Change”?

notarydpo | 10/20/2008, 4:38 pm EST

Okay, this is probably a misapplication of the term supergroup, particularly if you’ve heard Joel’s backing band.

But that’s one heck of a pairing.

spelling mistake:
“during which Barck and Michelle Obama stood center stage clapping and occasionally singing along.”

who is Barck Obama?

Fortunately musicians don’t decide who I vote for. They have every right to perform and tell you who they support and we as Americans have every right to tell them they’re full of crap if we think so. Musicians didn’t speak for me in the 60’s and 70’s and they don’t today, regardless of who I vote for.

Paul Kurrey | 10/20/2008, 2:22 am EST

I am an Indie musician and have done small fund raisers for obama as we need a leader and change! Sounds like a couple of disgruntled Repuglicans left some desperate remarks,,,tough when an election isn’t close enough to steal!

Ron C | 10/20/2008, 1:28 am EST

How much will Bruce like Obama when Barry tries to take, oh, say, 70% of Bruce’s $billion because, as Barry says, he wants to “make sure those behind [Bruce] can have the same kind of success” Bruce has had. Because, as Barry says, when we spread Bruce’s wealth around, everyone benefits! Bruce, you can send me that check for $1,000,000 right now…

SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS | 10/20/2008, 12:16 am EST

Do NOT kid yourselves. These guys want to be President for the sake of being President. THIS IS ALL ABOUT THEM. They care much more about themselves than they do about any of us or our country. Wake-up and smell the JET FUEL AND THE CAVIAR! THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT THEIR OWN AMBITIONS AND POWER STARVED EGOS. They are UNQUALIFIED and a very POOR CHOICE for this country to CHOOSE FROM. We lose either way.

rivergirl03 | 10/19/2008, 3:36 am EST

oh, and something to sarah palin:

people who use their power for private revenges should not become vice president or even president. Never ever. Imagine waht happens if that girl gets too much power…
I don’t want to think about it too long. That really freaks me out.

rivergirl03 | 10/19/2008, 3:12 am EST

I can’t believe what I’m reading here.

I am from Europe (Germany), and I grew up with the thought that America is the best country ever. Both of my parents were born in the second world war, had almost nothing to eat and were very poor. Then the Americans came and rescued our country, freed us all (”us” in the sense of “us Germans”). So I was always grateful and admired you.

And then came president Bush, and everything changed. Now I don’t (personally) know ONE SINGLE PERSON in Europe who still admires the USA. Everyone’s waiting and hoping for Obama. Dear Republican voters, are you aware of your image in the rest of the world? Do you forget that the things you stand and vote for were exactly the reason why people from Europe fled their countries to escape from it? What happened to the freedeom of speech, the freedom of opinion or religion? Everyone who has a different opinion than yours should shut up or what? You should be grateful that there are still people like Bruce Springsteen who stand up and fight for freedom, for peace and for a version of their country they dream of!
People like Springsteen show us in Europe that not everyone still thinks, acts and behaves like they would still live in the 16th century.
Fighting for freedom is not a crime. Eat that.

Gordon Hathaway | 10/18/2008, 9:46 pm EST

If these two millionaire popstars care so much about their country why don’t they run for public office and do something to change the things they criticize or since they are set for life financially, perform community service? When is the last time these two artists held a concert raising money for AIDS, groups working to combat violence against women, or for the hungry, etc.??? They came down form their mansions to raise money for a political candidate. Wow. How wonderful.

D. Edwards | 10/18/2008, 7:57 pm EST

WHO says rock’n'roll is bi-partisan? Are you from idiotville? It wasn’t in the 60s…or 70s…or 80s and so on. You want no-brain party music, listen to that band of depth Kiss, good for a few fun dopey songs, but that’s it. Or Motley Crude and such (Yes, I know it’s Crue). Springsteen, Joel as well as Fogerty, REM and others, they’ve never made their beliefs a secret. And what about Johnny Cash? He certainly didn’t tow a conservative Nashville line (which isn’t so conservative anymore, from Tim McGraw to Sugarland and so on, not just the likes of Toby Keith, whom I’ve heard may not be supporting McCain)
On the other hand, Bono is cautious because of his championing the battle against poverty and he wants to get money from whomever is in power, but I think his lack of progressive politics is somewhat cowardly at this time in not just U.S., but world history. His efforts are commendable, but not brave and bold in terms of risk, taking a genuine stand.

Donno | 10/18/2008, 12:55 pm EST

Rock and roll is supposed to be bi-partisan. When artists feel they have to make a big political statement, it becomes rheotoric, and is as boring as the Grammy awards. leave politics out of rock music. I am tired of hearing how it has to be a “force for good”. Now lets all get drunk and party

what a night….stay strong America, and like my momma always said,”Make good choices!”

I’ve love Springsteen since I was in high school, and he was a local hero playing bars in the NY/NJ area. He’s still relevant, and still speaks the truth to people. I’m glad he’s supporting Obama, a candidate who is also relevant and who speaks the truth to people.

The Most Cake | 10/18/2008, 12:56 am EST

Springsteen doesn’t hate his country–he loves it. Loving your country is wanting the best for it and not settling for a C student or a wolf-killing anti-choice urban hater. Since when is insisting on the best the USA has to offer hate? The status quo is killing us all. Wake up.

Jeff Wray | 10/17/2008, 3:40 pm EST

As a long time fan of Bruce Springsteen, it saddens me to ask the question, does anyone hate their country more than Bruce….shame.

brent | 10/17/2008, 2:48 pm EST

take out politics for a second and just appreciate the fact that these two could put their MASSIVE egos aside and perform together for a great set. i think i speak for a good majority of the people in this country when i say i just want this election over and done.. regardless how u feel about Obama or McCain, this was a huge collaboration between two legends. just appreciate it for that, if nothing else, and stop using it to spew hate towards the candidate you’re not voting for, b/c no one who reads this article cares about who the message board posters are voting for.

Joe the Janitor | 10/17/2008, 2:05 pm EST

Yeah I was at last night’s concert too and my favorite part was when McCain came out on stage and sang “Born in the USA” with Springsteen… yeeeaahhh aiiightt!!

Mr. Hate, when you break into the music industry, sell a hundred million albums, and still remain relevant thirty years after your beginning, maybe your snide laughter towards two icons such as Joel and Springsteen will be worth something.

If Springsteen and Joel both received lobotomies, they would still be more intelligent and relevant than the likes of McCain’s minions, Hank Williams Jr. and Kid Rock.
