Poison, Hair and an “American Idol”: “Rock of Ages” Musical Hits NYC

Rock of Ages is the story of a bartender/struggling musician looking for his one chance at love and the spotlight — but gets thwarted by the seedier sides of both. Boasting 30 classic lighter-waving anthems by Poison, Journey, Ratt, Twisted Sister and much more, the ’80s arena-metal musical opens its curtains in New York tomorrow. After runs in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, the off-Broadway play has found a perfect lead in American Idol rocker Constantine Maroulis, whose theatre experience (he was in the touring company of Rent) and much-celebrated position as the original long-haired Idol rocker bring the overload of drama and bombast to the already dramatic and bombastic songs of the Aqua-Net age.

“When we learned that it was going to be coming to New York officially, of course we were very interested,” says Maroulis, who originally considered for the lead role of awkward bartender and aspiring musician Drew three years ago. “I was actually offered Grease in fact, and I ended up turning that down for the opportunity to create a new show, a new role, the first time I would ever do that in New York.”

Set in the dingy Sunset Strip bar the Bourbon Room, Rock of Ages is riddled with huge hair, lots of swearing, a familiar soundtrack (don’t think you’ll get out of hearing “Don’t Stop Believing” one more time this year) and a self-aware, Guitar Hero-style humor that Maroulis says you have to completely dedicate yourself to if you want to properly pull off. Last week’s previews had the feel of a rock concert itself, complete with rowdy audience members reacting to the mashed-up anthems that play as the soundtrack, sending up and honoring the excessive spirit of the time.

“I think it’s the kind of material that stays with you,” says Maroulis of the set list, which also includes Whitesnake, Quiet Riot, Pat Benetar, Styx, but — due to licensing — not the Def Leppard song the play is named after. “Those songs always stay with you, but it was nice to invite them back into my life. And sort of look at them from a different point of view and see which bands have survived and have been relevant.” Most interesting for him to revisit was childhood idols Bon Jovi, a band he claims appealed to his dramatic side even at a young age. “When you really examine what he’s really singing about [in 'Wanted Dead Or Alive'], it’s kind of funny. Egotistical yet you kind of feel bad for them at the same time. ‘Aw, poor little rock star rocking out for millions of people worldwide.’ But you forget that they are just a bunch of young kids, it’s all very new, demands that are put on them, the wear and tear of the road. And I’ve gotten to experience a bit of this.”

The play allows Maroulis to play up his rock charisma and theater chops, but he adds that he’s not much of a dancer. “They got me moving a bit on stage there,” says Maroulis. “I danced at Boston Conservatory as part of the acting training but…I didn’t pay a lot of attention. I think I tried to charm my way through most of those classes.”

I saw the show in previews and I loved it!! So much fun! Really, the writing is great because it weaves the music into the story in an intriguing way. The comical properties of the show work like a charm, too, and had me laughing my ass off!

Maroulis is extremely talented and his vocals are perfect for this show. He’s a great straight man, as well. The whole cast plays the hell out of this simple, but poignant story. Loved it!!

WOW! I finally saw Rock of Ages last night and I am still shaking from it. Let me tell you, Rock of Ages is over the top. The music, the lighting, dancing, the script. It was a real ensemble piece with Will Swenson and Wesley Taylor stealing the show. Constantine Maroulis is major talent. I’m not sure what he does better, singing or acting. His charisma is undeniable.

ROA is a well written and even moe well executed show! MUST SEE!!!!!!!

This show was great, best show I’ve been to since Jersey Boy’s. I enjoyed the dancing and dancers. The pole dancing is fun and the girls are hot. The German kid was funny also. The show Rocks and I hope to see it again with my many girlfriends. It has been hard to get them excited, but this show gets them in the mood. I have also started up my old Fog Machine, I was so excited. The drinks are priced way to high, so smuggle in your own.:) :)

I’m super excited!

What a kick. Can’t wait to see this! What could be more fun than a night of headbanging, cool tunes you can’t help but sing along to, and watching Constantine take on a role he is absolutely perfect for. Awesome! :)

I saw this show last weekend three time, while it was still under previews. If you were in to the 80’s hair metal bands like I was. Go to this show. Everyone in it is excellent. All the singing, acting and dancing is spot on.

I saw this show the first weekend it was in previews and will be back in NY in November (if not sooner!) to see it again! The music, the cast, the whole feeling of being back in the 80’s again….it was fantastic! All that and Constantine to boot…I can’t imagine anyone better than him to play Drew!

CONSTANTINE SUCKS! | 10/17/2008, 4:00 am EST

PLEASE! original idol MY ASS! THAT was Bo Bice by a land slide, which is why he got to number two and con didn’t. of course, this show fits an egotistical ass like himself. you know…i’m sick of him saying that he turned down grease…THANK GOD! i saw that show for the first time and AND ace young for the first time and let me tell you, that boy is tearing up broadway, from what i understand. he can act, sing and DANCE his ass off. i’m not a fan of his but i’ll see his show again before con’s. from what i understand, people are going nuts over him so thank you….thank you constantine for turning it down. you go have fun in your little 80’s OFF-BROADWAY show ;-) oh and do me a favor, try not to sound so smug in your interviews next time.

I’ll be there for you. Maroulis is a true talent. Anyone who has been following his career knows this, and he will shine in this role.

Im glad he got a chance to show the world he is more than a one-trick pony.

Constantine and all the others were outstanding in Rock of Ages. Saw the show last weekend and I’m going back in December, can’t stay away. I’ve watched Constantine since the day of his audition on Idol and the man has grown in to a great performer, as I would have expected. Can’t wait to see what else he has up his sleeve.

Marie | 11/3/2008, 5:57 pm EST

Saw the show last night…Constantine was a DOLL. Sitting in the front row, I think we were TOO close. Especaially when Constantine came around, I just wanted to grab him. The show was great, the music was great, the dancers/actors were fabulous. I am definitely going back to see it again!

The show was fantastic! We all enjoyed listening to the songs from highschool!

A night out in NYC is exactly what this show is about, having a great time with friends!

Thanks Rock of Ages for giving us that!

Good morning to “Constantine Sucks” down there. You got it all wrong, my dear. Grease is closing in a few weeks. Rock Of Ages is a HIT and New Line Cinema has just picked it up for movie rights. The Show and Constantine are up on a digital billboard at Times Square. Constantine has paid his dues being stunt cast on Broadway, and sorry, but Constantine was offered that role in Grease and turned it down for Rock of Ages where he could play the lead role and actually develop a new character – whether you want to accept it or not. Maybe you just can’t handle the truth. They happen to be friends – so Constantine has no reason to embellish this fact. He isn’t arrogrant, he was just letting his fans know what was happening. We all thought he was going to be in Grease. Get your facts straight and then get over yourself.

ROA is such a great show that this life-long theater geek is going back for more-and I’m a long ways from NYC.
The entire cast is excellent as is the very clever ‘book’ of music and the awesome stage band.
As for Constantine, the critics are on his side, Rolling Stone included, so if you don’t think he’s talented or believe he’s smug’, go see this show and be sure to meet him afterwards. You’ll see that he is…to quote Kevin Cronin of REO Speedwagon, “the real deal.”

Cat | 12/12/2008, 3:36 pm EST

This role truly was made for Constantine. This guy’s vocals are amazing. Actually, the entire cast was made for the roles they play in the show. It’s a very entertaining show that makes you want for more. With that said, I have booked myself a flight in January so that I can treat myself to more Rock of Ages.

Sadie | 1/4/2009, 8:51 pm EST

I caught the show back in Oct. I was never a Constantine fan, but I did have a blast at this show. I am waiting to hear if Constantine is moving with the show to Broadway?

Hannah | 1/21/2009, 4:17 pm EST

I’ve always loved Constantine since AI. I am trying to figure out how to get to NY this spring and see him on Broadway. The show sounds great!

MARNIE | 6/8/2009, 1:37 pm EST

I was lucky enough to be able to attend the 8pm show on Saturday June 6th. The play was amazing! Yes Constantine has wonderful vocals and does an amazing job with his character. At the same time, however, I think that each memeber of the cast MADE this performance truly one of the best shows I have seen in a long time. All six of us were out of our seats dancing and having a fabulous time from start to finish. I haven’t enjoyed a play this much since Jersey Boys and I am a frequent Broadway visitor from NY. This show is not to be missed! Get ready to dance and sing along and laugh until you almost pee in your pants! Definitely a 10! I would just like to thank the WHOLE cast for such a wonderful evening! I will definitely be catching a ancore performance!

Encore!

Saw the play last week and it was AMAZING!! I am not from the 80s era but love the music & the cast did an awesome job! I even spilled my drink during the performance and still has a great time!! The cast and everyone part of this play did an outstanding job…I can’t praise it enough!

Heidi | 6/9/2009, 2:55 pm EST

To “Constantine Sucks” who posted the ridiculous rant in October,Let’s see what’s happened since your post…Grease closes because of dismal sales, Rock of Ages soars and moves to BROADWAY, into the theater that Grease vacated, becomes a huge success with audiences and critics, gets nominated for 5 Tony Awards…oh yeah, and so does Constantine because he is an amazing talent that everyone in the theater community recognizes.  He also happens to be a sweet, friendly, dedicated star who spends every night signing autographs and taking photos with every single fan who wants to meet him. Is that smug? No, that’s amazing. Get a freaking clue!!!!
