Kanye West’s Listening Party: Lights, Heartbreak, Nudity

Kanye West knows one way to make guests pay attention at an album listening party: a room full of live nude women, standing and posing in silhouette against a wall of bright colored light in a performance designed by artist Vanessa Beecroft. That was the scene in a Los Angeles loft Tuesday night, as West unveiled his brooding, emotional 808s & Heartbreak album, set for release November 25.

More than 700 invited guests watched and listened as Beecroft’s 40 models slowly changed position with each song, some of them wearing fuzzy wigs that covered their faces. Just as provocative were West’s new tracks, including the singles “Love Lockdown” and “Heartless,” mostly obsessed with romantic pain and loss. All vocals were sung and treated with the electro “auto-tune” effect. But there was no rapping or overt sampling, just emotional waves of electronic sound, beats and occasional strings.

“You want to tell your friends you’re leaving me,” Wests sings on one stormy, lovesick track. “You’ll never find nobody better than me.” Later, his voice is wounded as he surrenders, “Goodbye, my friend. Will I ever love again?”

When the album was over, West grabbed a microphone and stood beside Beecroft’s models and called 808s & Heartbreak a very personal project. “These are pieces of real life that I’m putting out for people to judge,” West said, and then ridiculed how it might be rated by critics. “It’s from my heart. I don’t give a fuck if someone rates it ‘hot’ or ‘not.’ I’m here to bring positivity that cannot be judged. It’s like judging a grandmother’s love, and someone says ‘Your grandmother gets two and a half mics.’ Or, ‘You grandmother didn’t sell a million the first week.’”

West, who said he has another album coming in June, noted that the closing song, “Cold As Winter,” was written for his mother, who died at age 58 last year following complications from cosmetic surgery. “The irony for me, someone who has talked about so many labels — Louis Vuitton this, Benz that, this girl look good, I’m not going out with you if you don’t look good — the irony, for me to lose the most important person to Hollywood. And now it’s time to deliver ideas in the most naked form possible.”

He put his arm around Beecroft, who created the living art installation on short notice. “When he contacted me a month ago, he caught me off-guard,” she told the crowd. “But when I heard the album, I heard things that touched my own life.”

Among the guests was Jimmy Kimmel, who arrived after West performed two songs on his show earlier that afternoon. “I’m sure it’s beautiful art, and many people can appreciate it on a much deeper level than I can,” Kimmel said of Beecroft’s work. “But I look out there and see a lot of good-looking naked girls and it makes me happy.”

College Dropout was fucking real, man. Like the shit he talked about was just real and every album he’s gotten more commercial and mainstream. He’s fucking conformed. Kanye is a way better lyricist than Lil’ Wayne. Wayne talks about fuckin girls, drugs and violence. West talks about real shit (not as much in Graduation). I’m praying that Kanye goes back to the real shit that got him where he is after this album. The first 5 or 6 that I’ve heard are mediocre at best. Robocop and Anyways are fucking horrible. When I was about to hear Love Lockdown I was so pumped, but after the first line I got so bummed. T-Pain does the auto tune shit. T-Fucking-Pain. Seriously Kanye? Do you need money that bad? So you’re gonna sell out and make B.A.D. Music now? Common’s a real artist. He stuck to real music for his whole career. T-Pain is god awful and that’s where Kanye’s career is going.

I used to dislike Kanye because of his attitutde I wouldn’t even listen to his songs, but one day I did and it was GREAT!!! I put aside all the bad impressions I had of him and instead of looking at him as a cocky jerk, I saw him as a confident and talented man!
The man has talent regardless of if he is rapping or singing,he is still going through some emotional issues. The album will sow that and be just as great as he is!! Hedid this album from his heart and his emotion and that is what counts!!!! His True fans will always support him!!!!

JMO | 10/23/2008, 3:18 pm EST

I am going out on a limb and saying kanye should stick to rapping the album is gonna sell but its gonna be some ass….leave the auto tone voice to T-Pain!!!

roach | 10/23/2008, 1:39 pm EST

Forget what rap used to be or how it evolved. How can people classify him as a good lyricist at all? He cant even stay on beat. In order to do so, he stretches out the words and sounds like a fucking retard. He could make an album of him just making fart noises and the world would buy it because the man knows how to market himself. That is it. He marketed himself so well in the music industry people forgot what rap is.

As for anyone comparing him to Lil Wayne…go home. At least Lil Wayne can freestyle (check out any of his mixtapes). Granted Tha Carter III was terrible material, but its what sells to white boys and girls.

Kanye Rose | 10/22/2008, 4:06 am EST

So he ’sings’ like Cher on it?
Do you believe in success without talent?

Axl West | 10/22/2008, 4:05 am EST

OMG. Kanye sounds like Axl Rose

Alex | 10/22/2008, 2:22 am EST

Kanye West is a better lyricist than Lil Wayne.
That’s all I have to say.

This sucks | 10/21/2008, 11:42 pm EST

He;s gonna ruin his streak of amazing albums.

Anonymous | 10/20/2008, 11:40 pm EST

grundle scratcher | 10/20/2008, 9:02 pm EST

Lets hope it’s original and not ripped off ideas other people have used in EDM!

Stop making Biggie and Tupac references. Kanye is Kanye! Rap is about evolution. Biggie was Biggie because he didn’t sound like the past. The past is supposed to influence, not be imitated. Come on kids, its 2008!

Like No Other! | 10/20/2008, 10:03 am EST

That man could do anything and the world would eat up like they’ve been starving! Ask youurself this: What other rapper could do something like that and get away with it? Nobody! Kanye blows a hole through the thermosphere. Stop hating and get on his level, kids.

Enlightened One | 10/20/2008, 12:27 am EST

Kanye blows donkey asshole. You crazy people and your taste for mediocre craptastic rhymes need to stop. Educate yourself and listen to the old stuff like Nas, Pac, and Biggie.

Brendan | 10/19/2008, 11:29 pm EST

I was there, and not only was the new record GREAT - it officially makes me a fan, and I will buy it the day it comes out - but the collaboration with Vanessa was fantastic as well.

Young Revolution | 10/19/2008, 6:46 pm EST

I am definitely looking forward
To 808s and Heartbreaks. Let’s
Be real, Kanye delivers every
Time out. Love Lockdown, and
Heartless are awesome. I can’t
Wait until Nov 25th!!!! Def.
The best artist on the planet!!!!!!!

pachahead | 10/18/2008, 12:43 pm EST

we dont have to judge, kanye like it or not is a real genious,so what if is more mellow or not rapping,is evolution.

complete garbage | 10/17/2008, 3:25 pm EST

kanye west is a wack mc….
the guy can’t sing, so why do all of these rappers think they have more talent than they actually possess? yeah, he is arrogant, but so what, his music still licks testicles

josh | 10/17/2008, 2:29 pm EST

kanye is real. he let fame change him and he let fame break him… for those who say he’s not undergroundmmmm your right… duh… he’s not supposed to be he is lyrical funny and truthful…he’s in a different class.. he not hood… one thing he went to college… beats out most rappers… hahah
but for reals hating and then sayin “I’m not hating” is still hating sorry…

L Boogie24 | 10/17/2008, 12:43 pm EST

People that hate on Kanye are just jealous that they cant be as influencial and real as he has for years now. Yeah the nigga is a pompus dude, but honestly, do you think YOU could make Jesus Walks, Through The Wire, Flashing Lights, and other bangers like that? In the nicest way i can say it, fuck you haters…

jerry | 10/17/2008, 11:35 am EST

Love lockdown is a great song but a whole album of Kanye singing is going to suck

Rowgold91 | 10/16/2008, 11:20 pm EST

I gotta say i’ve been a kanye fan for a while now and these new tracks are awful. when i first heard “love lockdown” i hoped that it was just an imposter trying to sound like kanye with some vocal adjustments. Now this nightmare has come true. I’ll say that he is definately not one of the greatest emcee’s of all time but for a modern rapper he’s decent. If the reader wants to hear some real hood music, listen to papoose, probably the most gifted on the mike for a modern day rapper. Still the GOAT is Big pun, who is 10000x the rapper that west will ever be.

Duces

TD Ocho | 10/16/2008, 7:54 pm EST

Fuck this, College Dropout was hot and he’s gotten progressively worse with every album.

k. | 10/16/2008, 6:44 pm EST

kanye west is one of the most overrated musical artists in history. That he’s as popular as he is speaks to how much we’ve delved into an increasingly bigger pool of mediocrity.

Tom | 10/16/2008, 5:54 pm EST

It might be true that Kanye isnt the greatest rapper, but he is a way shitty singer.

T2 | 10/16/2008, 5:39 pm EST

Probably a good idea for Kanye to drop the rapping. He is pretty inept MC and rhymes usually aren’t so great. His beats and production are typically his best qualities.

Kreamee Shortz | 10/16/2008, 10:34 am EST

I’ll burn this CD from a friend’s copy, then label it Kanye’s new album, then destroy it.

~Allie. | 10/16/2008, 10:14 am EST

Well I love Kanye and these 2 new singles. The listening party sounds like the hotness. Ye is different when most artist are doing the same thing as everyone else he is doing his own thing. I love it.

david | 10/16/2008, 3:47 am EST

since eveyones on his nuts ill be the 1st to say kanye sucks . too many rappers in love on the radio….remember when rap music was the shit????? o well

i dont see why he just doesnt come out the closet instead of making an album about it

Enlightened One | 10/16/2008, 3:23 am EST

Kanye blows. Its better he doesn’t rap because he cant stay on beat to save his life. Essentially, he sings all of his tracks. Great producer, crappy singer/ rapper. He caters to the teeny bop crowd. No hate here, but I just think people need to realize that he isn’t as good as people or rolling stone makes him out to be.

la | 10/16/2008, 12:58 am EST

kanye ’s speaking his mind in this album n some rap fans aren’t going to feel it. This is a huge step for him as an artist because this album will definitely let him show the fans how he feels about the lost of his mother. -go kanye!!!!

defJazz | 10/16/2008, 12:57 am EST

listen up peeps
Head to kanyes blog and download the full Heartless
It’s so sick
Cantvwait for 808’s

paul | 10/15/2008, 10:31 pm EST

kanye is legit because he does what he wants not what the media/people want..that is what it means to be a true artist…who listens to media reviews of art anyways, art is having a connection with the piece of art and if one person doesn’t connect then he rates it bad, so no on else can get it? that doesn’t make any sense…

keep it up, Kanye

Calle13 | 10/15/2008, 10:11 pm EST

I hate auto-tune. Hope it’s at least okay.

Nathan | 10/15/2008, 8:48 pm EST

I’ve liked what I’ve heard so far, I’m sure it’ll have a few hits in there.

Hm... | 10/15/2008, 7:48 pm EST

I’m usually against Kayne’s kind of music but this sounds interesting. I’m definitely gonna check this one out.
