How Tool Came to “Guitar Hero World Tour”: Exclusive Video

10/15/08, 5:45 pm EST

Tool haven’t licensed music since 1996, but they approved three songs for Guitar Hero World Tour — if they could be involved with the artwork and design of the game. The result: a digital venue based on Tool’s artwork and videos, and “Parabola,” “Schism” and “Vicarious” rockable on the game. Click above to watch guitarist Adam Jones explain how it all went down, and check out two shots from the game after the jump.

Tule is right.

TooL is one of the greatest rock bands ever.
Plus they run the show…always have…always will!

Man | 10/20/2008, 2:12 pm EST

I think that if anyone has the right point here it is Tule because tool had the right mind to say hey if we are going to be in the game then we should get what we want to be in the game. Tool is not a sell-out band. If you have ever seen any interviews or videos or even listend to the music you would know that Tool does not sell out.

Sell out schmell out. This is TOOL giving their fans exactly what they want. I applaud them for this. Hopefully we see full TOOL albums available for GH. Anyone who thinks this “goes against what TOOL stands for” doesn’t get TOOL. Its about engaging, transcending, enveloping, Guitar Hero is the perfect vehicle for that.

paul | 10/19/2008, 3:16 pm EST

what song is that playing in the background? and does anyone know where i can download it?

What’s the problem when a band, who’s musical achievements stand on their own, reach out and help inject a little bit of creativity and artistic integrity into the mainstream? Being a huge fan myself, I find it hugely comical when Tool fans get all antsy in their pantsy when their Beloved Tool tries to pump a little bit of decent rock into the mainstream. Tool working with Guitar Hero doesn’t lessen their integrity, it boosts Guitar Heroes’ by showing their openness and willingness to work with a band that has clear and distinct goals in music. Their music and credibility hasn’t been diluted by their involvement — if anything their progression and unique musical style might inspire otherwise brain-dead video-gamers to take an interest in music other than the mediocre alt-rock MTV bands of today.

it's me | 10/17/2008, 7:54 pm EST

who is ‘tool’

oh dear | 10/17/2008, 6:50 pm EST

I think I just creamed my pants…

MJK | 10/17/2008, 3:38 pm EST

Hooker With A Penis was written as a response to those who claimed TOOL was “selling out” this song is not saying that they only care about money and fame, it is, in fact, stating the exact opposite by directly pointing out the faults with blind consumerism. Whoever used hooker with a penis as an example to how TOOL HAS sold out is completely retarded and needs to listen to the music

HazeyDevil | 10/17/2008, 9:43 am EST

This should take nothing away from what TOOL has done to music and art for the passed nearly two decades. you can’t blame the guys for FINALLY reaching out to the public AND their fans for once. If you’re a TOOL fan and you question their credability because of this, then you should be deeply ashamed

harry _manback | 10/17/2008, 4:36 am EST

When Tool had Cam De Leon as an artist for the Aenima album the msuic was varied, progressive and interesting much like his art. Then when Alex Grey came intot he fold the music began to get monotonous, stale and pretentious much like Alex Grey’s art. Tool should really change their artist for the next album because Alex Grey sucks.his style is the same and once you’ve seen one piece of his you’ve seen them all. This is why art and music go hand in hand.

Sarah | 10/16/2008, 11:21 pm EST

I guess since Craig hasn’t seen a new Tool video on MTV since 1996 he believes “their [sic] popularity is not what is [sic] once was.” No, they’re not as big as they used to be…they only headline Bonnaroo and Coachella, their albums only go platinum, and they only win Grammys. Yes, Guitar Hero is the only way they’re staying relevant in 2008 (it has nothing to do with their love of video games). The only sad part is that Craig is missing out on Tool’s evolution from a buzz bin band to a classic act.

Andrew | 10/16/2008, 11:17 pm EST

What’s the difference between having your music on COMMERCIAL radio and Guitar Hero? They havn’t edited the songs on either so there is no difference.

You guys are a bunch of pretentious fools.

Hillary | 10/16/2008, 10:35 pm EST

:( Alex Grey deserves MUCH better

David | 10/16/2008, 9:06 pm EST

I thought tool was a BAND not a selling machine thing, this is so bad i mean tool in guitar hero sucks is just i dont know very dissappointed with them

Anonymous | 10/16/2008, 7:03 pm EST

Who cares about sellouts anyways??? If they’re still making amazing albums and unspiring ten of thousands then just let it be!

They’re one of a kind and that’s that!!!

Jay | 10/16/2008, 6:55 pm EST

I just have to say, I’m not sure Bryan and Boomer understand irony… Hooker with a Penis is meant to be ironic…

mike. | 10/16/2008, 5:54 pm EST

TOOL is an amazing, very unique band. But they are also one of the biggest selling hard rock bands.. They know how to play the industries ‘game’…

If the guys in the band think playing GH is great fun and not ‘below’ what the band has become, why should the fans? Need to get over yourselves.

Boomer | 10/16/2008, 5:46 pm EST

Am I the only Tool fan who has heard Hooker With A Penis? The sellout process began long ago which pretty much comes with the territory in that industry. And how can you question the relevance of a band like Tool compared to the Nickelbacks and Buckcherrys that dominate the industry yet bring nothing new to the table. Tool pushes everything to a whole new level. Show give credit where credit is due.

Jay | 10/16/2008, 5:37 pm EST

Why should Tool be above thinking that GH is a cool game that they’d want to be a part of. Why is making their music more accessible a form of “selling out?” Those of you saying they are selling out simply don’t understand the purpose of art and must simply listen to Tool for your own pretentious reasons.

Bryan | 10/16/2008, 5:26 pm EST

Selling out? Have you guys never even listened to “Hooker with a Penis”? Come on. Tool is out for fame and money just like anybody else. They make great music, but they are still human beings. Having one song, let alone three, is an honor to any guitar player and band.

CRAIG | 10/16/2008, 4:44 pm EST

Why does anyone care about this band anymore? Clearly their popularity is not what is once was and they are attempting to remain relevant. Very sad.

Eric Con Queso | 10/16/2008, 1:13 pm EST

Robert: I’m sure Tool can rest easy now that you’ve given your approval based on their involvement in the design. Wouldn’t want you to be disappointed!

Eric Con Queso | 10/16/2008, 1:12 pm EST

Robert: I’m sure Tool would be really happy to know that you approve now that you’ve heard of their involvement in designing.

jahluv | 10/16/2008, 12:15 pm EST

tool is my favorite band. if you want to play to the masses, YOU GOT TO BE ON GH, dont hate the player, hate the system!!!

robert | 10/16/2008, 9:29 am EST

i feel the same as DAN..
i mean tool has been “Selling out” now more than they used to but this was the icing on the cake..so i thought.. i love them regardless favorite band…but when i heard they would be on GH i was disappointed in them..now that i know how much they were involved then im ok with it……….sorta LOL

Steve | 10/16/2008, 9:00 am EST

This is against everything I thought tool was…

dan | 10/15/2008, 8:38 pm EST

looks pretty cool. at first i wasn’t too sure how i would reeact to tool being on guitar hero, but now seeing this i have my hopes up. Nice video. tool is awesome.

Anonymous | 10/15/2008, 7:26 pm EST

Finally!…an artist worth buying Guitar Hero for!

Aaron | 10/15/2008, 7:22 pm EST
