The Dead Reunite for Obama at Scorching Penn State Benefit Gig

Once again, Obama has raised the Dead: The remaining members of the Grateful Dead regrouped for the first time in four years at a “Change Rocks” fundraiser for Barack Obama at Penn State Monday night. Guitarist Bob Weir, babying a set of broken ribs, joined bassist Phil Lesh and drummer Mickey Hart. Drummer Bill Kreutzmann, who did not play at the “Deadheads for Obama” fundraiser last spring, flew in from his Hawaiian holdout to join the band.

The crowd was an even mix of die-hard Deadheads and Penn State students, with the parking lot scene pretty standard, complete with tailgating, music blaring, Frisbees flying, and no hotel vacancies for 30 miles (students paid $30, non-students paid $50). The Allman Brothers started the show, giving the event a flashback to the days when the two bands shared bills at the Filmore in the late 1960s and early ’70s. However, without beer sales and zero-tolerance security, most of the students stayed out in the parking lot partying. Slowly, the seats filled as Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes traded licks and Gregg Allman worked the keys and sang with no signs of his illness that kept him offstage last spring. “It’s a beautiful night,” said Haynes. “It’s an historic night. Don’t forget to vote.”

Between sets, Obama volunteers and security wandered the floor of the sold-out 16,000-seat Bryce Jordan Center in State College, Pennsylvania as a video message from the candidate played: “For 20 months, I’ve been traveling this country from town to town — even developing a ‘Touch of Grey’ of my own,” Obama said. “On November 5th, I hope to announce that we ‘Ain’t Wasting Time No More.’” After a photo opp backstage, with Kreutzmann grinning and Weir sitting with his chin pensively in his hand, the band took stage and electrified the crowd. The smoke billowed, glow sticks flew and the crowd roar crept up. For the first two songs — “Truckin’ ” and “U.S. Blues” — it seemed the band was set on giving a Dead primer, offering something everyone could sing to. Turning on a dime after two rock openers, the band suddenly jerked into weird spasms, odd jolts and spacey twangs filled with MIDI effects and dueling bass and guitar play. Pleasingly tweaked and twisted, they plunged into deep and dark waters with “Help On The Way/Slipknot!/Franklin’s Tower,” “Playing in the Band,” “Dark Star” and “St. Stephen.” They came up briefly for air with a gentle “Unbroken Chain,” and quickly sunk back into a vicious “Other One.” By “Throwing Stones” and “Touch of Gray,” the intensity lifted.

“People are just crazy nervous,” said one Obama volunteer. “There are people here that enjoy, you know, illegal things. And Barack doesn’t want to be connected to that. So, security is a little on edge.” Those worries go along with an endorsement by the Dead. The band approached Obama last year, offering their support and considerable influence over legion of Deadheads. “We’re all deeply into this, into Barack Obama and the thought of taking this country back in some shape or form, what’s left of it,” Hart said recently. “It’s probably one thing we can all agree on. It’s funny that an Obama event would do that, but that’s how important and critical this election is. It’s our call to arms, or call to music, which is the way we arm ourselves.”

Through the show, the remaining rhythm section leaned into one another and seemingly bonded once again. Weir, Lesh, Kreutzmann and Hart gave off a sense of genuine enjoyment. But don’t get too excited just yet. Spurning whispers of a possible reunion tour, longtime Grateful Dead publicist and historian Dennis McNally has cautioned, “They just want to see how it feels.”

The Dead Set List:
“Truckin’”
“U.S. Blues”
“Help On The Way/Slipknot!/Franklin’s Tower”
“Playing In The Band”
“Dark Star”
“St. Stephen”
“Unbroken Chain”
“The Other One”
“Throwing Stones”
“Playing Reprise”

This show was great with the exception of Bobby forgetting lyrics occasionally. I don’t know where this security you speak of was at, because I saw none down on the floor with J’s getting passed everywhere.

Hershey Kiss | 10/14/2008, 8:15 pm EST

The show was classic. Jerry was missed but the guys delivered. The security was present but very tolerant to let the “Dead Heads” do what they do and enjoy the show both inside and outside the stadium.

gossamer | 10/14/2008, 8:32 pm EST

who cares about the dead, it’s all about the allman bros

Sue-B | 10/14/2008, 8:32 pm EST

So Barack doesn’t want to be connected to “illegal things” but allows his endorsement by the Grateful Dead. What does he think the band and its followers are known for? One more glaring example of Obama’s poor judgement.

tony | 10/14/2008, 11:11 pm EST

RE Sue B:
What “Illegal Things” are you referring to, A passive performance of music with no hateful words or off-color language. Perhaps a Toby Keith show would have been better with a message like Ill put a boot up your ass. Yea thats what we need more of, hate full fear mongering.

Jessica NY | 10/14/2008, 11:35 pm EST

Good people getting together for a good cause. All ages and levels of society. Smart for Obama party soliciting to a large group of PA residents who might not otherwise vote by speaking to them in a language they understand. Its time for a change. I had a great show.

Respond to Sue B | 10/14/2008, 11:49 pm EST

I have been a fan since 1973…I experimented a little in the 70’s but the last time was 1976….I continue to go see the dead and dead like shows…..more people these days dont get involved with that “activity” anymore…I am not saying all but you can find that “activity” at any concert…not just the Dead

Mr. X | 10/15/2008, 1:31 am EST

Obama doesn’t want to be associated with potheads and people who use drugs. Those are the “illegal” things he was referring to. Why he would expect most deadheads to be sober teetotalers or not have smoked ever at all is beyond me. Even he used to do “illegal” things!

Redacted | 10/15/2008, 4:44 am EST

Anyone have a bootleg? I had to leave early to work the audit shift….

lifetime fan | 10/15/2008, 5:59 am EST

Jerry would never of gone along with this one … stay the hell out of politics boys ..

jonnyjihad | 10/15/2008, 8:06 am EST

This was a great time and a great cause! The crowd was good, the security was lax n the music was fabulous!! oh and dude, was there ever a show without some kind of missed lyric?

Anonymous | 10/15/2008, 8:26 am EST

I liked it better when the Dead were non political.

PeteyPabs | 10/15/2008, 8:43 am EST

Jerry would have voted for McCain

the don | 10/15/2008, 8:44 am EST

the dead have been politaical since the 1960’s. That’s where the hippie movement started, the vietnam war…they have endorsed all kinds of public officials in the past. Get a clue

the don | 10/15/2008, 8:47 am EST

sorry about that missed spelled word, political. just typing to fast

woah | 10/15/2008, 9:45 am EST

who cares political or not, i saw the dead last night (with the exception of warren haynes not playing enough of jerry and more of his own style at times). i was lit.

woah | 10/15/2008, 9:49 am EST

great show, screw politics, they were pretty on. and gave a nice set for even non-dedicated heads. security was no issue. obama doesnt support any of the illegal acts i witnessed two nights ago, but its all real (SUE) so get out of your 3 bedroom ranch house, get somewhere that u can read decent, unbiased literature, and get with the program. oh and btw sue, i was sooo lit at that show.

Phred | 10/15/2008, 11:43 am EST

Any reason for The Dead getting back together for a show is a good one.

So what if it’s Politics….?

Haven’t you ever done something because you truly believed in it?

Just because they are a band doesn’t mean they aren’t human like us.

They must really have their hearts and interest in this election or they wouldn’t have done the show.

As for Jerry……..He was missed but I don’t think there is anyone out there who can truly say whether he would have gone along with this or not.

The world is a different place than it was 13 years ago. The boys in the band are different people than they were 13 years ago.

Let the Dead be the Dead. Things change. It’s a part of life.

Not one person can say they haven’t changed their mind on something in their lives.

It would be like Bobby or Phil saying you were too young to see us when Jerry was around. So you shouldn’t come see us now.

If you’re passionate about something, don’t let anyone get in your way of doing something you feel good about.

In this case, the Dead played for a cause. Agree with it or not…..this is THIER band. Not YOURS. If you don’t dig it…..Stop paying attention to them.

SweetMelissa511 | 10/15/2008, 12:11 pm EST

Stay out of politicis boys??? Do you even know anything about The Dead, lifetime fan?? Sorry but ummmm they were part of a HUGE movement back in the day man!!! In all honesty i have been sturggling big time with our candidates and which one doesnt suck more but due to RS and massive support by friends and yes ill say it bands, im starting to think i must join deadheads for Obama!!!

Sue-B | 10/15/2008, 12:37 pm EST

Jez woah-the article said Obama doesn’t want to be connected with illegal things, not me. Guess reading this mag is not getting me the unbiased news you are referring to. Guess he’ll take the money from anyone he can and be a hypocrit about it.

Staggerlee | 10/15/2008, 1:25 pm EST

Come on now Jerry is GONE(R.I.P)I agree with most of the posts except Sue-B, she is only making waves. PSU was awesome. I really miss Jerry’s licks however for such little playing time together I thought they were on it. i was good to hear the boys play again. Again it will be very hard to insert Jerry here in the music. The deads music is ever changing

No Politics | 10/15/2008, 3:17 pm EST

From Garcia, by Blair Jackson:

“From the outset, the Dead refused to get involved with overtly political activities, though not surprisingly they were often asked to appear at various marches and rallies. There’s no question that as individuals, Garcia and the other members vehemently opposed the Vietnam War and supported the goals of the civil rights movement … but many freaks believed that protesting and trying to reform what they viewed as a corrupt, morally bankrupt political system was, in effect, buying into that system.”

whoa | 10/15/2008, 3:54 pm EST

unbroken chain????? holy shIt!!!!!!! GO PHIL

Republican Dead Freaks Unite | 10/15/2008, 5:03 pm EST

Who are you? Where are you? Why are you? The Jerry quote here sums it up- this is NOT a polictical band, it is a rock band. Hippies remenmbering the scne are remembering it wrong. While many of the fans were always leaning to the FAAAAR left (read COMMUNISTS)and were close to conservation issues, national politics were NEVER, EVER part of the official scene. I find this turn toward the political sad and that is why I avoided it. I will continue to listen to the band and see them and their members and just wince and ignore any leftist political diatribe in between the unbeleivably great and mind-warming tunes. Cheers and VOTE REPUBLICAN. and LEGALIZE IT. If OBAMA had any non-hypoctritical BALLS he would call for. Prohibition is killing this country! 1% of the population in prison?! More young black men in jail than in college?! Drug laws that DON’T WORK!!! That’s why I left the dumbocrats- THEY HAVE NO BALLS.

Long Legged Mack Daddy | 10/15/2008, 5:36 pm EST

I am so sick of this election. Whopee the Dead are even supporting Obama. Who cares. Jerry is rolling in his ashes. Wavy Gravy for President.

Bear | 10/15/2008, 5:40 pm EST

What are millionaire musicians so in love with Democratic Candidates? What is the fascination? Like I need Bob Weir or Bon Jovi to tell me who to vote for.

RCB | 10/15/2008, 9:36 pm EST

The Dead “not political?” They were part of the *counter-culture* That’s pretty damn political. Maybe you mean they never endorsed a political candidate before? There is a difference. Maybe they’re “buying into the system” but guess what who gets elected in this election does actually matter. Maybe Americans don’t see it that way, but the rest of the world does. Go Dead.

old deadhead | 10/16/2008, 2:09 am EST

Please!!!! This was not the Dead, and Jerry absolutely stayed away from this kind of sucking up to politicians of any stripe!!

Catapillar25 | 10/16/2008, 2:50 am EST

Commenting on one of the earlier posts: What Obama didn’t want, and took a gamble on by giving the assent to this concert, was bad headlines connecting him to a big drug fest where allot of people got busted.
I was there and it was a great night. Both bands were having great time for a grateful crowd. Mickey and Billy were really pumped up going into this show and as usual kicked ass.
I graduated Summer ‘90 when PSU was an informal head hub for east coast dead tours. What this article doesn’t tell you, is that this event never would have happened at PSU 10 years ago let alone 20 years ago when I attended. There is a conservative current that has always run that campus and town. All the activists from the 80s & 90s that I ran into there, had a state of disbelief that this event was happening in “Happy Valley” at all. (The dead had been banned from the campus in 1981 by a performance form Jerry, and memebers had only really played there again in the last few years.) But not only did this excellent benefit go down, but the lack of hassle from the local officals way incredible. They allowed for camping in the parking lot the night before the show and the night of the show. The show was a total smoke out with seemingly no attempt to stop it. PSU was gracious and kind to the heads that rolled on into town for this special event.
From a university that hated the heads and cannabis activists, couldn’t stand us taking over the student government, was forced kicking and screaming to gentle up its policy on students smoking herb, and was never cool enough to really allow pot smoking in its concerts venues, to let this thing go down (For OBAMA the democrat no less) in one of the most miraculous things I’ve seen in years on so many different levels, and lets me know that the time’s really are a-changin.

CHI-TOWN | 10/16/2008, 6:21 pm EST

I missed the show.Due to gas prices. But I gave my ticket away to someone who could make it.I love that the Dead played the show there and that it seems like everyone I talked to had a great time.So what if it involved Obama.Who gives a crap. And who thought that the Dead heads were not going to enjoy themselves just like they have at all the other shows years ago.I hope to see a tour out of this. And maybe turn some heads on the legalizing of herb.It was here before us.

Little DeadHead | 10/17/2008, 11:54 am EST

Im just glad that were gonna get to see the boys that are left playing together again. Who cares if that means their gonna vote for Obama, Right

Peter S | 10/18/2008, 6:53 pm EST

Phil, Bob, Mickey and Bill should only be playing together. I’m glad they chose this essential cause to do it.

Long live The Grateful Dead!

Obama in 08!

Rock On USA!

PryorShowGoer | 10/20/2008, 3:07 pm EST

Hmm, I don’t know. I would do a double take at this show if the remaining members started a Obama chant or some political bs like that.

Jerry would have been against this. But it’s cool people had a good time.

Across the Universe | 10/26/2008, 6:59 am EST

The Dead are correct in endorsing Obama, 1) Because if that’s what they feel like doing, more power to them. And 2) Because if you’re not getting behind Obama, then you support war profiteers and the death machine. It’s that black and white now. We all know it. Let’s not pretend. Call Obama the lesser of two evils or whatever you wish. We cannot allow this killing machine to operate any longer. Bless The Dead for doing the responsible thing. I was a member of the press at the show, and the writer of this piece spun it so that the “volunteer” quoted above was making some sort of official statement. This is misleading (perhaps deliberately so, to givethe piecesome tension), since most of the volunteers were kind of rural, backwoods people who had never seen this kind of psychedelic experience. A lot were PTA-types and local small town civic-minded folk. This is a fairly conservative area. So all the reefer was sort of a strange new phenomenon for most of them. Like noserings. The volunteer quoted above was speculating at best, with no official capacity to make statements on behalf of the campaign. The writer here may have spun it just a little too far. You decide. If Obama’s campaign was afraid of media fallout from Dead fans, do you really think they’d have taken the risk at all? Obama’s target is obviously the youth, and their rock-the-vote style is a handsome way to attract them. Just the riskiness of the Obama campaign getting behind a band notorious for drug association is quite alluring. Oh, and you people who think you know what Jerry would have done, give it up. Times change, people change. This guesswork on dead people is tedious. Let it go. There’s no time to be sitting on our hands any longer. The earth’s health is at stake and our grand children’s futures too. Inaction amounts to being part of the problem. Go vote! And be proud that the Dead are optimistic about something. Let’s have encouragement, not negativity.

Sluggo | 10/26/2008, 6:16 pm EST

Three things

First, it was a fantastic show- Dark Star->St Stephen->Unbroken Chain was simply sublime. The Allmans were great as well and the crowd had energy to spare.

Second, vote Obama. We could use 4 years that aren’t stained by illegal wars, wiretapping, treasonous outing of CIA agents, concentration-camp style detainment and torture and economic piracy by the neo-fascists on the right. The Dead’s music sprang out of the (liberal) counter-culture scene of the mid-sixties, rife with the kind of screw-the-establishment sentiment many Obama supporters (like myself) can easily identify with. If you’re for McCain and a DeadHead you never really got the band and what they were all about, sorry. Maybe you should become Lee Greenwoodheads or something.

Third, the dopes that think they can speak for Jerry should shut the hell up.

Jerry Gillespie | 10/28/2008, 7:35 am EST

What Jerry often said about voting was: “constantly choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil.” At this point in time Barack Obama is not the evil; complacency is. The issues in the post 911 world are too important to ignore and for the first time in a long time I am voting and it will be for significant change.

DoubleDrumz | 10/29/2008, 2:04 am EST

I think it’s great they rocked the house for Obama. Obama is the best thing that could happen in this country right now, and for those who are anti-politics, you better be glad SOMEONE is willing to stand up and go the miracle mile against our terrible establishment (GOP) and to try to save this god-forsaken country for us, or with us. The Dead understand this and THAT’s why they are doing it. Open your eyes and get on board.

Living under a rock just won’t cut it anymore. Grow up, get up and join the modern world or we may not have much of one to live in anymore.

My whole life revolved aroung the Dead for 25 years, and this is right up thier philosophical alley.

Go Dead and Please Go Vote Obama!

Seth | 10/31/2008, 11:34 am EST

Wow, I really wish I couldve been there, the last show I say was the casino ballroom the night Jerry died. It would have been nice…
On a political note, its too bad the dead arent savvy enough to realaize its a one party system and it really doesnt matter who you vote for any more. I wonder how many of your know what the CFR is and Obamas relationship to it?

MRO | 11/7/2008, 8:59 pm EST

Like WOW I did’nt know The Dead were apolitical oh man is that the right or left word

MCLEARY | 11/11/2008, 5:20 pm EST

great show –band was rusty but loosened uo quickly

town was mellow

security was in force but not too forceful

parking was extremely well organized

local motels were receptive to the fans

President Obama won the election now so will the Dead be invited to play at an inaugural ball in D.C.? hmmmmm…..as Jerry himself would note…..”you never know”

ozark hillbilly | 1/3/2009, 8:42 am EST

I canot belive they played for that worthless peice of liberal human skin…….have been a dead fan for better than 30 years………no more Dead for me

Glyn Parson | 1/12/2009, 10:11 pm EST

Anyone know where i can download this show???? I was there and it was great to see the boys back together. And the dead have been very political since the beginning and they actually got more so as the years went on.

Instigator | 1/17/2009, 1:42 pm EST

It is weird seeing the dead do a fundraiser for a political candidate. Who knows if Garcia would have done this or not. I think Obama has pulled the wool over a lot of people’s eyes, but we will not know that for a while. I am going to go to the spring shows and hope the scene is the same as it was the last time I was at a dead show many moons ago. I sure miss Jerry.

JerrysDeadGetOverIt | 1/23/2009, 9:12 am EST

It’s great that the rest of the gang is still ABLE to get together and play. I hope they do go back on tour that would be awesome! As far as supporting Obama I do wish they had their morals straight but you can’t deny that The Dead have always been political and pretty much without any morals…”peace, drugs, make love not war.” Pretty much anything goes as long as you don’t tread on me. The problem I see in this philosophy is simply the lack of responsibility to protect yourself, your loved ones and essentially your country. I refuse to lay and be slaughtered where I live. Obama is letting all the KNOWN TERRORISTS FREE, that is the most Anti-American thing anybody could do, he may as well give them their guns back while he’s at it, the one’s that have “Death to America” scratched on them. Bring the troops home, yeah that’s great, we’ll just sit on our hands and wait for another 911 attack while we are passing our new anti gun laws. Guns don’t kill people…People Kill People! And they were doing it way before guns were invented. I never saw a gun do anything on it’s own, have you? If we wait around for them to attack us on our own soil I have a feeling that most Americans may want their guns back. There’s Change you Can Believe In!

D | 1/27/2009, 10:43 am EST

You young-uns are so very hysterically funny!! You would not know a Dead Head if it bit you in the a**. I saw them in 1972, 1973, 1975, 1976, 1982, 1986.

As far as the “righties” aka “ignorant rednecks” aka “boneheads” are concerned, go blow yourselves, as they seem so adept at doing stupid things. Obama’s judgment is just fine. The people who seem to SCREAM the loudest are the ones that have the hangups and the REAL problems.

I think repukelicans have more to worry about for picking a bonehead opportunist like Sarah Palin as an up and coming political superstar….NOT!! Talk about a lapse in judgment.

D | 1/27/2009, 10:47 am EST

jerrysdeadgetoverit is a TOTAL wingnut. Talk about bringing out the lowest common denominator. Obama freed all the terrorists? roflmao what a tard!!!

Maybe if you listened to more mind freeing/blowing music maybe your head would be on straight.

Dead heads have more BRAINS in their pinky fingers than repubes have in their whole person.

JerrysDeadGetOverIt | 2/2/2009, 3:25 pm EST

‘D’ it’s people like u who CRY for tolerance and go around calling people names like “Ignorant Rednecks.” Simply showing the world your ignorance and lack of any REAL Tolerance. Are there any redneck dems out there? Any rep. deadheads? Guess not according to u.(what a maroon) A REAL Deadhead would have tolerance and show compassion to those who “SCREAM” the loudest because it would be obvious that person needs help. This is OBVIOUSLY NOT YOU! It’s too bad that you went to sooo many shows and still learned NOTHING from them.
Whoa Ho what I want to know is are u kind?

DEADHEAD4LIFE | 2/10/2009, 1:37 pm EST

Ive just recently started listenin to the dead and all i have to say is as long as The Dead is around we will be alright. ONE LOVE
