Everclear Offer Free Download of “Jesus Was A Democrat”

10/10/08, 2:49 pm EST

Art Alexakis and Everclear will likely face a controversy of Fox News-ian proportions with their brand new song, “Jesus Was A Democrat.” “I bet you think of him, as a nice clean long haired republican,” Alexakis sings. “Nah, he would be all locked up in Guantanamo Bay, if he were alive today.” Alexakis was inspired to pen the song as far back as the 1988 elections, as “the Right Wing made people believe that ‘Liberals’ were anti-American, anti-God and anti-family values. However, if you read Jesus’ words, he sounded like a liberal.” The band premiered the song during their performance at the Grammy’s Rock the Conventions show in Denver during the Democratic rallies. The song is now available as a free download at the band’s site. While the song may not top the charts, there’s no doubt Obama has a lock on the all-important bloc of Everclear votes. “I think it’s imperative that we elect Barack Obama. His election will be a message to the whole world that in today’s America anyone can achieve their dreams, regardless of race, gender or economic strata,” Alexakis said in a statement.

“Jesus was a Democrat” hits the nail on the head. I am sick and damn tired of Republicans claiming Jesus when so many of their policies and attitudes go directly against what Jesus actually said and stood for. Congrats to Mr. Alexakis for speaking up and using his platform.

the right can’t claim is a monopoly on the original rock star, sweet sweet Jesus Christ. Jesus! Awesome song. If He came back today, his arms would get way tired from turning over the moneychangers’ tables.

“Congrats to Mr. Alexakis for speaking up and using his platform”

Yes, this is clearly going to affect all seven of Everclear’s fans.

Just as bad. How does pinning Jesus to a different political party make it any better, same garbage rhetoric.

Jesus | 10/11/2008, 3:23 pm EST

What’s so special about Jesus? How about finding out which political party Einstein was loyal to?

Hayzeus does great work on my garden.

Good song – great and timely message.
Everclear may no longer be mainstream but they still rock – or at least are starting to rock once more (check out their cover of Jenny on their Vegas Years album).

Did Art pay his tax bill yet?

Duh, he’s on the cover of Zig-Zags. Of course he was liberal…

Sandfuse | 10/13/2008, 5:09 pm EST

Zouave’s picture is on Zig Zag products. Jesus would probably be neither Democrat or Republican. To say either is silly. Anyway, the liberal party of Jesus’ time had him crucified. So Everclear is perhaps never clear.

I love Everclear! where have they been??? This song is awesome and makes me a little less hesitant to call myself a Christian. Thanks Art Alexakis.

We need to come together as a country and stop all of this bickering. Jesus loves everyone, including close-minded Democrats. Give me one good reason you think Jesus was a democrat, I will be waiting hear all night to hear it. McCain will bring this country together. Jesus loves you so much that he will help elect John McCain.

It's just a song!!! | 10/18/2008, 1:08 pm EST

People who think Jesus was really either democrat or republican?!!! I believe in REAL SCIENCE anyways. Say or think what you want but I only believe whats right in front of my face! But good song, Everclear kicks ass I’ve been listening to them since I was 9 years old!

Its a great song! | 10/26/2008, 7:36 am EST

The song is not literally about Jesus voting democrat. It is an expression of how sure as hell he would not be happy with the neo-con republicans and their war mongering amongst many other transgressions. Especially so because a false connection has been engineered in the public conscious between these actions and Jesus (ie would he actually approve of blowing up innocent people in his name?).

So good on Everclear for continuing to write great songs, and standing up for what they believe. And once again. Awesome track.

Wow… Some interesting comments! First off, “Anyway, the liberal party of Jesus’ time had him crucified.” How can someone think it was the liberals that had Jesus crucified? Quick thought… It would be ignorant to think that Jesus was killed by the hands of people who mass killing innocent people and causing unnecessary wars. If in fact you feel that republicans were not at all responsible for the war, check your facts. Not what you see in the news and hear from the media.
Secondly, “Jesus loves everyone, including close-minded Democrats”
What? Well yes, according to the Bible, Jesus does love everyone. However, if you walk into a room full of democrats you don’t know, and have a heart attack I’d bet they would genuinely care about your well being more so than if it was a room full of republicans. You should try it! Maybe you’ll learn some important information :-)

For me, personally, the song violates the separation of church and state. I think that it is disrespectful to write a song like this one. I think that Art is just an angry dude that wants to piss some people off. Yea, I’m sure jesus loved everyone and he was a good guy and all, but come on, there is no need to start controversy over what he might have been. Unnecessary!

“Jesus loves you so much that he will help elect John McCain.” says Tom

Hey Tom, what happened? Looks like Jesus helped elect Obama!!!!

Maildad | 2/28/2009, 12:48 pm EST

Funny how liberals, who want any mention of Jesus removed from public life, claim he was “one of them”. Anyone see this irony?

tom c | 9/12/2009, 2:48 am EST

in responce to this crap!

i find it so funny that you say “close-minded Democrats.” do you know why? because thats a really close-minded thing to say. you are no better than any other people. another thing i find funny about these “close-minded Democrats” is that they seem to be all for FREEDOM of speech, FREEDOM of sexuality, FREEDOM for equal rights. not the “open-minded republicans who think people who dont believe in god are bad people, that gays shouldnt get married (but they claim that they have the same rights). i agree that we need to come together as a country and fight for whats right for EVERYONE. not what your personal morals are.
Oh, and i almost forgot. if Jesus was around today i think he would be an Independent. Because i think he would think both sides are completely FUCKED!
Were all the same. You’re no better than me and im no better than you. were equal. even though i may have no respect for you or what you stand for.
