The Beastie Boys have announced their “Get Out and Vote” tour. In an e-mail blast this morning, the activist rappers said, “This election is too important to stay at home. We hope that you can come out, have a nice night, dance, sing, get your freak on, and then wake up the next morning and get everyone that you possibly can to get out and vote.” Mike D told Rolling Stone, “Looking at musicians when they take on serious social issues with some degree of cynicism is probably healthy, because you don’t really ever know what people’s intentions are. But everybody is like, ‘What could I possibly do to weigh in here?’ You know we can try and make phone calls, and that’s good, but we could also probably reach a lot more people by doing this.”

Diamond added, “”This is the first election in my lifetime that seems so crucial … Barack Obama is somebody who has really got me excited about the Presidential race,” though the tour itself is technically non-partisan and is partnering with Rock the Vote. So far, only the first three dates of the tour have been announced, and the band promises to bring special guests like Sheryl Crow, Jack Johnson, Tenacious D and Santogold with them to various shows. Stay tuned to their official site for more tour dates and ticket information.

“…technically non-partisan ”

And which musical artist will represent the conservative side during these stops? I’m not trying to be rude, but I’m asking a serious question. From what I’ve read and seen, most of these artists support the Democratic ticket. I have no problem with that at all, but I think this is really an Obama focused function, held under the false “Get out and Vote” banner. My apologies, in advance, if I’m one-hundred percent incorrect. I’m looking forward to hearing and reading about the events. Also, thanks for bringing such an awesome lineup of artists to Milwaukee. I may have a different political pov, but I appreciate the works of the various musicians.

All hail to the chief!
Don’t hope just believe!
Economic roller coaster!
George Bush oven roaster!
This country isn’t free of bullshit
I’m on my knees in the pulpit
praying for change,
in the balance it hangs
Look left Look right
Took theft and shook rights
for us to finally see
this isn’t democracy.
It’s time for landscaping
so lets lose the bush.
And end the land-raping
before our ideals are smoosh.

to the hate filled masses
and empty glasses
that troll a post
on a website they hate most
for progressive thought
not bought
by corporate raiders
and boondoggle traders:

here is the message
make noise and be progressive
change is like 1904 champaign
and happy times again will reign
after the last pretzle is choked
and our former president elopes
across some oil executive’s moat
and disapears into history books
next to Jackson, Grant, Harding and other crooks

so that the McKinley-Hoover
Republican maneuvers
that cost us
until the people smelled the manure
can be muckraked
and exposed as half-baked
while Obama brings new drama
like a new square dealer
who makes America realer
by restoring promise
worthy of our Constitution
studied at Harvard
with respect to its evolution
as a breathing document
that will preserve this very country
if it dares to exhale free

ROCK the Vote!

Oh Come on Rollinstone, throw me a rolling bone, I read your magazine, so I’m never alone. Refreshing its not, when you delete what I jot. Avoid the drama, vote for Obama. I’m out like McCain. Remember my name.

I first heard Licensed to Ill when I was 10 years old. At first I thought these guys would not last. Upon further review I look at the Beasties as one of the most innovative acts in music history. Check Your Head, Ill Communication, Paul’s Boutique are my favorite albums by the Boys. They are true pioneers who can play their own instruments, who care about the world they live… How many rap acts can play their won instruments?

Just enjoy the music…That Mcdonalds ad got you there. Right?

MC Cardigan | 10/13/2008, 4:13 pm EST

Yo this is MC Cardigan..
this stinks, but I didn’t fart again! All y’all are hating so smug, when out from under you goes the rug, rubbing your head and yer all woozy, suddenly don’t know who yer choosing, if you feel like you own what you just wrote, upgrade that feeling– check this show, and then vote!

docj | 10/13/2008, 2:14 pm EST

i dont think many people give a crap about these lame groups

shawn | 10/13/2008, 12:54 pm EST

The real REALITY is that the B Boys aren’t just rappers. As far as I’m concerned, their first album, Licensed To Ill, was a fun party album but it was just a joke. Every album after, particularly Pauls Boutique and Check Yo Head, were as progressive and original an albums as I’ve ever heard, way ahead of there time. Now, how many rappers know how to play an instrument. All three Beasties do. The Beasties barely even fit into the rap genre. They started out as a punk rock band and evolved into a rap/alternative group that has written songs in just about every musical category. So as far as saying all the Beasties do is rap, I suggest educating yourself. Now as far as the election, I’m sure that if any of their fans or non fans vote for John McCain, they will not hold any hard feelings. Beatie Boys have always stood for free thinking and doing what you believe is right.

“As far as their contribution to music, there hasn’t been a more original and progressive group to ever come out” - shawn

EVERY BEASTIE BOYS SONG:
boy 1 raps verse
boy 2 raps verse
boy 3 raps verse
all 3 boys rap chorus
boy 2 raps verse
boy 3 raps verse
boy 1 raps verse
all 3 boys rap chorus
boy 3 raps verse
boy 1 raps verse
boy 2 raps verse
all 3 boys rap chorus
all 3 boys rap chorus

shawn | 10/12/2008, 8:28 am EST

The Beasties are just trying to get young people involved, which isn’t a bad thing. Our parents aren’t always going to be around to do all the voting for us. As far as their contribution to music, there hasn’t been a more original and progressive group to ever come out. CHECK YOUR HEAD BOY.

chris | 10/11/2008, 6:51 pm EST

the vote for change tour worked really well, didn’t it? i don’t get how they (beastie boys) can jump around on stage and rap to their mediocre jams and ACTUALLY THINK they will SWING an undecided voter. so ******* stupid.

Eric | 10/11/2008, 5:52 pm EST

The Beastie Boys couldn’t save Tibet, so now they are joining a
“non-partisan” tour. Give me a break.

Dave | 10/11/2008, 1:33 pm EST

Orwell, there is no reasonable debate of viewpoints in these tirades. It is condescending and presumptuous. Why would a conservative group sponsor an entity that is so clearly in the tank for the democrats? And please stop with the vote supression stuff. I always hear the dems unconfirmed reports of republicans moving arrows on signs in cities. How about the actual proof of dems signing up “sports stars”? Can I have a break please?

Orwell | 10/10/2008, 8:37 pm EST

The fewer that vote, the better it is for Republicans. Traditionally true, and it will be true in this election too. Usually when conservatives say they are getting “demonized” it means their views have been questioned. You will never see a conservative group sponsor something like Rock the Vote. Repression of “diversity of thought” is another straw grasped at when a platform is built on quicksand.

Dave | 10/10/2008, 6:53 pm EST

Yeah, it is “technically non-partisan.” I’m sure there will be a free and open exchange of viewpoints and conservatives won’t be demonized at all. Why people pay to have their viewpoints consistently assaulted is beyond me. They celebrate diversity unless it’s diversity of thought.

Jason F | 10/10/2008, 3:45 pm EST

Aren’t these guys, like - middle-aged? What are they still doing with the kiddos…..lock the doors!

Why is it with age - you lose talent but get loud?????
