In the Studio: Scott Weiland Disc May “Turn Off STP Fans”

After a tumultuous five-year stint in Velvet Revolver, Scott Weiland finally gets to let loose on his new solo album. “There’s no rules,” he says. “I don’t have to worry about radio playing it.” He also doesn’t have to worry about the approval of Slash, Duff and Matt Sorum — which has given him the room to craft a two-disc album about his volatile relationship with his wife, Mary. In 2001, he was arrested for domestic violence, and in 2007, she was arrested for torching $10,000 worth of his clothing — just hours after the two were kicked out of a hotel for brawling in a room. “I liken it to [Marvin Gaye's] ‘I Met a Little Girl,’ ” Weiland says. “It chronicles our life.”

Weiland has been working on the project in spurts over the past decade with his longtime creative partner, Doug Grean, who co-wrote and produced the album. The guys from No Doubt co-wrote the power-pop cut “Paralysis,” which is the possible first single. “Missing Cleveland” is a nostalgic look at Weiland’s hometown, set to Bowie-style glam rock. Other tunes range from banjo-laced country rock (”She’s So Cold”) to neo-Beach Boys pop (”Somedays”).

“It may turn off some STP fans,” he says of the CD. “That’s just the way it is. At my age, I just do what I wanna do. There’s art and there’s commerce, and I’ve already accomplished the commerce part of my career.”

do people actually give a shit about his “oh woe is me” lifestyle of a junkie that he CHOOSES? If he stepped up to be a real man maybe he wouldn’t have all these ‘problems.’ The guy’s a joke, and the fans are his enablers…

Hey jboy | 10/9/2008, 1:27 pm EST

i could care less about his lifestyle. Junkie roll call—Hendrix, Joplin, Moon, Vaughan, Hoon, Rose, Gahan….I love their music. that’s all that matters.

kill the industry | 10/9/2008, 2:39 pm EST

Wow another solo record from the Bret Michaels of grunge…. gee I can hardly wait.

jboy | 10/9/2008, 3:20 pm EST

those on yer list actually produced music that has stood the test of time, REAL talent, something Weiland perhaps pissed away IF he ever had any at all

Hey jboy | 10/9/2008, 3:33 pm EST

Weiland had enough talent to collaborate on at least three great albums with STP, and an uneven but adventurous solo album. About the same output from another notorious junkie Kurt Cobain.

Duff | 10/9/2008, 4:56 pm EST

Weiland is great people, his last solo album was amazing and really showed off what type talent the guy has. I love STP and feel that they are one of the most underrated bands ever. I must say the las VR album kinda sucked and I have been a GNR since 88. This solo album is gonna blow shit up and prove that Weiland is not some junkie asshole who cant get his shit straight.. As for the Bret Michaels comment.. what a fucking joke… I would love to know who you think has talent

velvet democracy | 10/9/2008, 7:40 pm EST

Will Weiland be involved in any way with the release of chinese democracy? I can’t wait.

Guitarbassman.com | 10/9/2008, 8:03 pm EST

I think it’s cool that he doesn’t really care how the album does commercially and just wants to do his thing. I never liked STP or VR, but Steve Albini did work on this album, might check it out just cause of that.

Joe | 10/9/2008, 8:26 pm EST

Velvet Democracy is the coolest name ever. Dont tell Axl or the repackaging will delay the album another year.

Jeff | 10/9/2008, 8:38 pm EST

Meh, your half-assed performances on tour with STP this year turned off STP fans. As did your half-assed performances in Velvet Revolver.

In other words, more of the same?

Here’s how I rank Weiland’s work so far:
1.Core and Purple
2.Libertad
3.Contraba nd
4.Vol 4 and Shangra-la-di-da
5. Tiny Music
6.12 Bar blues

Matthew Parrish | 10/9/2008, 10:03 pm EST

Hey–I romanticize the man’s growl as much as anyone. As far as pure 90’s pop-rock goes, there aren’t two finer offerings than Core and Purple. And while the uneven Tiny Music… still had its gems, the rest of Weiland’s career, from No.4 to whatever VR’s last debacle was called, is disposable. Is there any hope for a career resurgence? I don’t think so but for some reason I’ll give it the new disc a listen.

wielandhimself | 10/9/2008, 11:42 pm EST

I think weiland has wore himslef out. has everybody forgot about his first solo album. you needed a brain disease to enjoy that shit. i’m a true lover of stp and think their shit was great, but i don’t think scott has the parts anymore to produce anythying worth listening to. prove me wrong scott.

Kent | 10/10/2008, 12:23 am EST

Bret Michaels of Grunge! Ha Ha!

Hey jboy :

Keith Mooon was an alcoholic not a herion abuser. Know your history.

Seeing Weiland and STP in Sacramento back in early Sept. was hilarious…to say the least. While the band sounded pretty solid, Weiland decided he would basically stop the show, mid-song, to pick on an individual in the crowd, who may or may not have thrown a bottle of water straight in the air, with some of the water landing near Weiland. He stared, pointed, and yelled at the guy for a good 2 minutes…then had security guards kick him out of the show.

Maybe the lamest move I’ve ever from a musician at a show.

You could also see all the other band members with a look on their face of “Oh, great. Now what’s he doing?”…classic.

gfkjmfm | 10/10/2008, 3:09 pm EST

Wow RS.
You can at least include Dave.

I’ve never seen someone with tatoos wearing a tank top before

boatman | 10/11/2008, 4:35 pm EST

Weiland is only a 3rd or 4th tier talent but that still puts him above most others. His lyrics are not smart but at least they’re not dumb. It’s not easy finding simple words and phrases that don’t get annoying over many listens. Give the man some credit.

M | 10/13/2008, 10:32 am EST

Here’s a really simple concept: If you don’t want to listen to it, just don’t buy it.

THANKS FOR SCREWING OVER ALL YOUR TAMPA FANS BY BLOWING OFF AUGUST’S CONCERT HERE. WE’RE TURNED OFF BY YOU AND YOUR MUSIC ALREADY.

Scott is way more talented than any of us blogging on here first of all. I love it when regular joe’s comment on how good someone is at making records and writing songs and singing blah blah blah. Especially someone famous who has proven themselves. Have any of us written one thing or much less had anyone besides our mothers listen to it??? Highly doubt it. Scott is a good singer, he is a good performer and he is a good songwriter. Way better than any of us JOES. So get a life and stop hatein, start particapatin.

white Russin | 10/15/2008, 9:52 am EST

His first solo album was the best thing he was ever involved with. The problem has always been the band behind him. I pity him for having to sing along to those lame guitar riffs on Purple. STP has always been a superficial punk band because its like, huh, I have to work with these people.

uk woman | 10/15/2008, 12:21 pm EST

I don’t think the life of a person in the music business is an easy one. Constantly expected to ‘top’ the last CD, put in superior stage performances night after night, singing the same stuff. Try it sometime critics. STP were incredible at CMAC, NY, July 15. Scott has always pushed the envelope and by recording this new CD he has made it to please himself.
