Slash: “This Time Around, We’re Not Making Compromises”

As an iconic axeman, Slash needs guitars. So when his beloved 1991 Gibson Les Paul “Goldtop” was stolen in 1998 and never recovered, he turned to Gibson to recreate the classic guitar, which he used on some of Guns N’ Roses’ most epic tunes. The guitar company obliged, and now the same Slash signature model is being released for public consumption from Gibson, carefully customized to Slash’s specifications. (A more affordable Epiphone Les Paul model is also available.) He’ll need it in the coming months as he and Velvet Revolver work up some new material and continue searching for a replacement for departed singer Scott Weiland.

Slash is also working on demos for his first true solo album, which he hopes to release next year. He would not reveal any song titles or personnel, but he expects to be tracking in a Los Angeles studio by January. “It’s just a lot of stuff I want to do,” he says of his new songs. “It will definitely be a rock & roll record.”

What is special about this Les Paul guitar?
I asked Gibson to make me a reissue of the 1991 Les Paul Goldtop that I had been using on tour for “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” “November Rain” and “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door.” This was probably the best guitar that I ever heard for playing those kinds of solos. In 1998, I had my studio ripped off and all my guitars were stolen. Slowly but surely I got them all back — but the one I didn’t get back was that particular Goldtop. Finally, I got to the point of asking Gibson to build me a reissue. It’s amazing: they built me this guitar and it sounds exactly like the 1991 stolen guitar, which somebody out there still has.

Was there a particular guitar player you looked at as a young kid?
In the ’70s, there was a lot of guitar players. Jimmy Page definitely had a big influence on me when I first picked up the guitar. A lot of the guitar players I listened to, I would really like this solo or that solo, and I’d find out later what kind of guitar it was, and chances are it was a Les Paul.

Which is also what you play in Guitar Hero.
I was very specific about that because they didn’t have a Les Paul in their entourage at that time, and I said the only way we can do this is with a Les Paul.

Has the huge success of Guitar Hero boosted your rep even further?
Yeah, but the flip-side of that is I met this kid who came up to me and was blown away by the fact I was the guy in the Guitar Hero game, and he kept going on about that. Ten minutes later he goes, “Do you play real guitar?”

What’s up with your solo album?
I’ve been working on the solo album all summer. I only have three of four more songs left to get on [demo] tape. We’re probably going to record the album next year. It’s hard to say when it will actually be released because this industry is so fucked up right now.

What is the status with Velvet Revolver?
Everything is cool. We’ve been writing this whole time, but we’re on this quest for a singer.

It wasn’t so long ago when you were in this situation, back when the band was getting together.
We spent at that time 10 months listening to 200 singers a week, and chased after Scott, and managed to make that work. We were off and running, but then things fell short and we’re at it again. It’s actually sort of a blessing, because we originally wanted to do something really heavy and it took a different turn, especially on the last record. This time around we’re not going to make any compromises.

Did you learn any lessons learned from the last search?
Singers are a very interesting breed. It’s hard to be choosy when it comes to finding somebody talented enough to be a really great frontman for a rock & roll band. There’s always something that comes along with it, just like with any musician. It’s all worth it if you manage to get those magical moments.

It would be good this time if they learn to write some good songs instead of jamming on some blues riff. Hendrix was great guitarist who also knew how to write a great song.Slash needed izzy and axl to help him do that.

Natzzz | 10/7/2008, 10:20 pm EST

Great interview!
Slash rocks! Cant wait to VR get their new front man!

Anonymous | 10/7/2008, 11:43 pm EST

Slash needs izzy and axl to help him do that but i still wonder why 50000 ppl go to axl and roses jsut to see him barely any go to a velvet revolver concert who have done much like two albums and so many other tours no one realy heard just go back to axl rose for the sake of humanity just go back to him and hire izzy back please

Schism206 | 10/8/2008, 1:23 am EST

I’m glad he said they are looking to do something “heavy”. Contraband was one of my favorite albums and it was very aggressive and had awesome riffs solos and lyrics. Libertad not so much. It was ok but Contraband blows it out of the water anyday. Hopefully they can find an awesome singer and STP can make a new album, I would then be a happy man : )

Mr.X | 10/8/2008, 8:44 pm EST

Slash is an idiot.

dero | 10/8/2008, 11:01 pm EST

A cool Chris Cornell would be perfect for the band….

Ari | 10/9/2008, 1:04 am EST

Slash is God. Scott was great for 2 albums. Axl is a legend. Who’s gonna be the right guy for the next decade? Cornell is a good choice, he’s a great singer but he lacks that stage charisma,IMO. He needs to stay away from gimmicky guys like Bach and ilk. It’s really hard to find an outstanding frontman these days, like it is to find the right Prez.Whatever, the guy has to be kinda mad, sing great and have a magical charisma.Who’s got the sum of Axl and Scott?? Step forward!

TBone | 10/9/2008, 2:34 am EST

Maybe VR can do like Neal Schon did with Journey-take the YouTube route to a new singer!

D | 10/9/2008, 4:08 am EST

Lenny Kravitz!

Cheesecrop | 10/9/2008, 8:13 am EST

You wanna know the saddest part of that article? When he recounts how the kid only knows him for Guitar Hero, and not for anything real. It points out the painful fact that even w/Axl, things have changed so much. Those who remember the late 80’s/early 90’s would love it, but GNR would just be a “Guitar Hero” band to a younger generation of fans.

How sad is that.

dbri | 10/9/2008, 8:27 am EST

Contraband is OK. A lot of the songs sound the same to me. I was expecting more. Libertad is a much more realized record with a lot more style. Something to do with Brendan O’brien, or Scott having more of an influence? We’ll see what happens next.

BelRose | 10/9/2008, 11:49 am EST

“It’s hard to be choosy when it comes to finding somebody talented enough to be a really great frontman for a rock & roll band.”
HELLO??????????
Too bad it’s a little too late to work with Axl, huh?

GrayFox82 | 10/9/2008, 12:53 pm EST

After hearing some of chinese demcocracy tracks, Axl is waaaayyy off on another planet than slash and the others in VR are, as far as what they want to sound like musically. Not to say that the VR albums weren’t good because I thought they were great but I think Axl, slash and the rest of the orignal GNR crew need to stay away from each other as far as making new music is concerned………The only stuff I would ever want to hear from them is the music they’ve made that we all know and love…….. if hell freezes over and they decide to do a reunion gig.

Shaze | 10/9/2008, 2:18 pm EST

I bet he barely remembers what a good song sounds like….

Hells Yes | 10/9/2008, 3:06 pm EST

Dero has it correct….Cornell all the way!

Perry Farrell might work; it could put them in a whole new direction, in a good way.

insane in maine | 10/9/2008, 5:21 pm EST

how about doing something like rockstar the tv series that helped inxs and supernova the ratings would be outstanding to have slash and duff to judge the contestants good luck slash and the rest of vr

boatman | 10/9/2008, 5:36 pm EST

I agree with dbri that Libertad was the better VR album.
I think Slash should put VR on hold until after the next STP album. By then Weiland will have learned to appreciate Slash’s talents more and come back. Not that the Deleo brothers aren’t good. They are.

bryant | 10/9/2008, 9:37 pm EST

VR is done. Have a new band with new kind of music. i love all the bands that Slash was part of.

Sammy | 10/10/2008, 8:06 am EST

Give it up Slash fans. Jesus himself could come down from heaven and join this band, and they would still FUCKING SUCK ASS.

Nate | 10/10/2008, 9:23 am EST

Forget VR, Slash should release his studio album then form a blues/rock band with Izzy. That would be really sweet.

Jason Daniel Baker | 10/10/2008, 2:28 pm EST

The rumours I heard about Velvet Revolver were that they thought about approaching Gary Cherone (Extreme, Van Halen) then they considered bringing in a female singer having rejected so many guys.

chad. | 10/10/2008, 10:21 pm EST

they refuse to throw in the towel, even if it is blood-splattered with tears and piss.

forthbase | 10/11/2008, 10:30 am EST

I think Zack from R.A.T.M. and Chris Cornell are by far the best two Lead singers out there.Either one would be a great choice for V.R.Gary Cherone, please,He couldnt sing with Van Halen,Dont even think about it.Disaster waiting to happen.Better off with David lee Roth.

Sammy | 10/11/2008, 2:03 pm EST

You are all retarded. Zach de la Rocha, rapping to Slash’s cheesey ass solos! Give it up Slash fans, he fucking blows goats. Check out something different… Menomena, Grizzly Bear, Low, Oceansize to name a few.

Ari | 10/13/2008, 8:28 pm EST

I like the idea of MIKE PATTON very much! As a diehard GN’R/VR fan, I think Mike is the perfect choice. He’s got the voice, the attitude and the mania that is required to be the singer for Slash’s band. No one else seems to fit the bill better.HOPE YOU’RE READING THIS, SLASH!!!

RB | 10/14/2008, 7:27 am EST

John Garcia from Kyuss… One of the best rock singers… For those of you who don’t know, he used to be in Josh Hommes first band, Kyuss… I’d say 99 percent of you don’t know… But, he’s a kick ass rock singer… Look it up

jason | 8/2/2009, 4:47 am EST

I think everything great takes a little time. Alot of people out there bash slash and to them I say kiss my ass. Slash has been a great guitarist every since he stepped into the spotlight. The gnr/vr guys have been in the biz a long time and i’m sure they won’t dissapoint the true fans no matter what they do. Guess i’m not one for kicking people while they are down. I wish them the best.

Mockingbirdman | 8/12/2009, 4:06 pm EST

There are a lot of great guitarists here and now and ones that have passed. Slash is very soulful and his tones and style have to be very obvious to even the non-guitar fan. The bottom line is..he is not Hendrix, he is not Eddie V, he is SLASH and he rips it up and pours it out ! Have some respect for the man even if you don’t like the man! Bon said it best….It’s a long way to the top !!! And as far as a new front man for VR… someone “new” to the game….a young buck that wants it bad, that has a good head on his shoulders, one that hasn’t been in and out of addiction clinics through the the last few bands….. Somebody said Perry Farrell ??? I saw Janes open for the mighty Ramones before janes had a major deal…..and they were a mess….. I saw them many years later at the first lollapalooser….they were a mess….. saw them a few years back and porno for pyros…they were a mess…… hmmmmm uh yeah….wanna sing in my band ?? Never really liked GnR, Bought the albums but I ony liked Slash and his guitar…always thought Axl was a crybaby, so I am all set with that idea…. Slash and his boys are all talented and need to hook it with some fresh blood and rock the world in a fresh direction…look at Chickenfoot for example !! Slash……I can’t wait to check the solo album out ! Best wishes to all !!

Anand | 8/18/2009, 10:51 pm EST

Weiland was a very poor choice for a band with the chemistry of a Sorum, Mckagan, and Slash. Weiland is ok, but really can’t approach anything magical or ethereal, like Axl could. Other great vocalists like Cornell and Vedder do not match the style of their sound. So getting a great front man is not enough, they have to have someone who matches and brings to life their unique sound, and that is no easy task..it may be something they may never manage to find.

tammy | 10/12/2009, 3:49 pm EST

I think you should just do what you want slash as long as your happy…. Love You Lots!!!!!!!
