Bruce Springsteen Inspires Voters With Passionate Acoustic Set at Philadelphia Rally

On Saturday, Bruce Springsteen kicked off three days of Vote For Change concerts on behalf of Barack Obama with a powerful acoustic set that drew estimated 50,000 to the Ben Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia. Cutting a distinctly Woody Guthriesque profile in rolled up flannel, denim and tousled hair, Springsteen stood atop a 30 foot high stage emblazoned with the word “CHANGE” and belted out a seven-song, 45 minute acoustic set as a gift for Obama volunteers and a catalyst for the disengaged to register to vote. Plenty of people heard the call — according to the Obama campaign, some 21,000 new voters were registered as a result of the event.

“I’m not Barack Obama, but I’ll do my best,” said Springsteen, before wheezing his harmonica like an angry freight train launching into a tense, jingle-jangle reading of “The Promised Land,” his 1978 affirmation of faith in the ideal American in a time of dwindling opportunity and diminished expectations.

Four songs later — including a like-minded “The Ghost Of Tom Joad,” the obligatory “Thunder Road” and the rarely-heard “Does This Bus Stop At 82nd Street?” — Bruce spoke humbly about why he believes in Barack Obama. “I’ve spent most of my creative life measuring the distance between that American promise and American reality. The distance between that promise and that reality has never been greater or more painful. I believe Senator Obama has taken the measure of that distance in his own life and in his work. I believe as president, he would work to restore that promise to so many of our fellow citizens who have justifiably lost faith in its meaning.”

After a mournful rendition of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land,” Springsteen sent the people back out onto the streets with marching orders to take their country back from “those who who would sell it down the river for a quick buck.”

Set List:
“The Promised Land”
“The Ghost of Tom Joad”
“Thunder Road”
“No Surrender”
“Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street?”
Speech
“The Rising”
“This Land Is Your Land”

Bruce Springsteen’s Speech:
“Hello Philly,

“I am glad to be here today for this voter registration drive and for Barack Obama, the next President of the United States.

“I’ve spent 35 years writing about America, its people, and the meaning of the American Promise. The Promise that was handed down to us, right here in this city from our founding fathers, with one instruction: Do your best to make these things real. Opportunity, equality, social and economic justice, a fair shake for all of our citizens, the American idea, as a positive influence, around the world for a more just and peaceful existence. These are the things that give our lives hope, shape, and meaning. They are the ties that bind us together and give us faith in our contract with one another.

“I’ve spent most of my creative life measuring the distance between that American promise and American reality. For many Americans, who are today losing their jobs, their homes, seeing their retirement funds disappear, who have no healthcare, or who have been abandoned in our inner cities. The distance between that promise and that reality has never been greater or more painful.

“I believe Senator Obama has taken the measure of that distance in his own life and in his work. I believe he understands, in his heart, the cost of that distance, in blood and suffering, in the lives of everyday Americans. I believe as president, he would work to restore that promise to so many of our fellow citizens who have justifiably lost faith in its meaning. After the disastrous administration of the past 8 years, we need someone to lead us in an American reclamation project. In my job, I travel the world, and occasionally play big stadiums, just like Senator Obama. I’ve continued to find, wherever I go, America remains a repository of people’s hopes, possibilities, and desires, and that despite the terrible erosion to our standing around the world, accomplished by our recent administration, we remain, for many, a house of dreams. One thousand George Bushes and one thousand Dick Cheneys will never be able to tear that house down.

“They will, however, be leaving office, dropping the national tragedies of Katrina, Iraq, and our financial crisis in our laps. Our sacred house of dreams has been abused, looted, and left in a terrible state of disrepair. It needs care; it needs saving, it needs defending against those who would sell it down the river for power or a quick buck. It needs strong arms, hearts, and minds. It needs someone with Senator Obama’s understanding, temperateness, deliberativeness, maturity, compassion, toughness, and faith, to help us rebuild our house once again. But most importantly, it needs us. You and me. To build that house with the generosity that is at the heart of the American spirit. A house that is truer and big enough to contain the hopes and dreams of all of our fellow citizens. That is where our future lies. We will rise or fall as a people by our ability to accomplish this task. Now I don’t know about you, but I want that dream back, I want my America back, I want my country back.

“So now is the time to stand with Barack Obama and Joe Biden, roll up our sleeves, and come on up for the rising.”

Bruce…you are the Boss…you are rocknroll…..and I love you for being true to your beliefs and your heart for your country. Don’t ever stop speaking your mind. Thank God for people like you who helped us finally have some hope again in the world. May God bless President-elect Obama and the USA. (and Bruce).

Brockbeta O'BombinYa | 10/28/2008, 12:38 pm EST

Yo Bruce,
Why not just admit that you needed to pay off the Devil Rays home umpires with the revenue from the venue so the Phills could take the title in 6 instead of seven my kneegrow. A true American hero. Yo Joe, can we have an election, without the G.I.’s stuck in the middle of a super set front up to disguise the true raping of this mother earth we all call home Uncle Sam?

Tom in Chicago | 10/11/2008, 2:07 pm EST

Wow! The tenor of these comments makes me think a lot of you weren’t listening to the kindergarten teacher when she told you to think about three nice things when you said one bad thing. Here’s the thing - Barack Obama represents not only thoughtful change but true direction for my beloved United States of America. If you don’t see this, that’s your call. But to disparage my candidate with negative criticism related to race, name, education, or experience is one of 26 reasons - a) anti-democratic, b) bone headed, c) calcified thought, d) dumb, e) erroneous, g) godless (Obama is a practicing Christian for those of you who falsely say he is not), h) heartless, i) idiotic, j) a Joke, k) Ku Klux Klan-like, l) limp, m) moronic, n) numbskullish, o) opaque, p) pathological q) quite queer, r) racist, s) stupefying, t) terrible, u) unjustified, v) very, very dangerous (as you spout your crap at rallies like a bunch of nazi youth), w) wrong-headed, x) xenophobic, y) yellow-bellied, and z) zero tolerance.

If you support McCain, good for you. I, with my very own iq and my very own professional career have selected Barack Obama to represent me and my family. And with all of my heart I hope and pray he is elected. Let’s think back four or eight years. If you voted, for whom did you vote? If it was Bush, why do most people who selected and supported him treat him now like a pariah? Why is he not referenced except by McCain who very recently supported him between 95% and 100% of the time to say that he would go at it differently.

Wow! Do you know how much of a maverick McCain is? Last week he supported the financial rescue plan. This week he says he opposes it and thinks supporters should be charged with a crime. Is that stable? Is that reasonable? Is that what you want in your next president? Not me. I don’t want a 72 year old erratic man who may not live with his idiot sidekick Sarah Palin ready to take the rein.

So if you truly feel comfortable with all of this - well that’s your choice. But for my part I plan to fight with my heart and soul to ensure that the right candidate prevails. And that candidate is Barack Obama.

Kay | 10/9/2008, 3:03 pm EST

Je$$e and Glen Boyd are seriously obsessed with Bruce. They say the same old things over and over, and have no idea WTF they are talking about. Glen, get over the fact that Bruce wrote one fucking song about a real life event and doesn’t hate cops. You guys like New Kids on the Block for talent?

Je$$e | 10/7/2008, 3:06 pm EST

McCain sucks…Obama sucks…Springsteen really sucks..game over.

OBAMINATOR | 10/7/2008, 2:35 pm EST

Hey Nobama, go screw yourself. The antichrist is already in office right now. Also God, Jesus, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and all the other magical characters are rooting for an Obama win. Calling Obama a racist is like calling McCain a young whippersnapper - it just ain’t so. Bruce! Bruce! Bruce! Obama! Obama! Obama!

NOBAMA | 10/7/2008, 2:11 pm EST

Not that I needed a reason not to like Springsteen, but even more of one now. I can’t believe all you false led sheep following a racist like Obama. You will all regret this when he’s in office. I will be saying “i told you so”. Obama is the antichrist!

Patti: Wow! You inferred a lot more from what I said than what I actually said. I’ve been a Springsteen fan ever since the first album, and knew he was going to be big WAY before “Born to Run” came out. I don’t have time to address all your errors, but maybe you should take a reading comprehension course. Just trying to be helpful!

utah | 10/7/2008, 12:06 pm EST

Christy………Biden’s against gay marriage too, not just Palin. You sure you have all the info you need to make a good vote?

Tramp69 | 10/7/2008, 11:11 am EST

I can´t believe what I´m reading here! I´m not an American but I´m very interested in everything that goes on the USA because as a German, we are much more into politics than most of Americans are. But for Americans it would also be good to recognize a bit more what is going on outside the USA, especially right now, while the USA looses its power in world economy because of the finance crisis.
I´m also a very big Bruce Springsteen-Fan and for me it was a pleasure all summer long at his concerts here in Europe to see an American icon like the Boss talking about politicians and at least do something and care about politics.
In everything Bruce is doing you can hear and feel that he is not short minded but knows what is going on in the world, outside the USA. A lot of Americans - sorry, I don´t want to attack someone personally here - have no idea how the opinion of the world about America has changed in the last few (Bush) years. America was the country everybody over here admired for all the things Springsteen mentions in his speach. Bush and Cheney have distroyed all that and today I have to apologize when I tell someone, I like America and not all Americans are pro Bush! Isn´t that weird? So why shouldn´t a citizen of your great country try to use it´s popularity to gain others for his thoughts? Is that what happend to the Dixie Chicks democratic and american? No! Bruce Springsteen is in my eyes a real patriot and when he plays his concerts over here you can feel that. He is the one that gives me hope, that America will be that America we over here in Europe loved and admired since the Americans saved us from the cruelty of WW II.
And by the way: I don´t give a damn what kind of clothes he wears. He is just a super normal guy who always wears this kind of clothes. Should he wear a suit just because he can afford it? Stupid! Bruce Springsteen does so many donations for all social kind of things.
By the way, I´m a conservative although I hope Obama will become the next president. Trust me, at least for the rest of the world he would be much better than McCain (I don´t want to mention Palin here - she is just not worth it).

Bruce Springsteen is a free man in a (once) free country and has all the right to say what he wants.

Bruce forever!

rocker | 10/7/2008, 9:52 am EST

people that have a problem with bruce expressing his opinion have a problem with the core ideal of america and that’s DEMOCRACY!
we need more people to express themselves!
this is america so USE your rights that other countrys don’t have!
as for the people who say bruce is a zero well you must think that kid rock is the new dylan of his generation because bruce has written some of the finest rock in rock history and acclaimed by practically every knowledgeable historian and critic.
listen to jungleland and get EDUCATED.
if you don’t see how screwed up our country, economy, walls street, lay offs, etc are then you don’t see reality.
these are hard, bad times!
so GOD BLESS BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN who at his age can still WIPE THE FLOOR OF ANY ROCK BAND TODAY HALF HIS AGE!

Patti | 10/7/2008, 9:32 am EST

Doctor Mabuse, you amaze me. I suppose someone should be condemned for working hard, earning their money the honest way, and having the talent and skill to keep making a living doing what they love. Yes, there are people struggling, so what should the Boss do, huh? Say “I’m sorry, but since I am not one of you anymore, I have nothing to say” and then go home? OR - should he have got up there in a tuxedo, tails, a top hat, and a cane and do a tap dance telling everyone we’re going to be just fine.

You sir, are an apparently bitter man who never got what you believe is “owed” to you by the American Dream. I’m sorry, but if someone has the right amount of talent, skill, and luck, should not they be compensated as such? If you were in his position, would you not feel the same way? Oh, but I’m sure you wouldn’t be rallying for a cause like Bruce, though. You’d probably be at home counting your money and keeping it all for yourself. Give me a break!

Je$$e | 10/7/2008, 8:58 am EST

Christy

what the hell are you talking about? I told you I wasn’t a supporter of either..Obama’s a fraud also..but I guess you’ll vote for him because Oprah said so..you fukin empty head.

Rakesh | 10/7/2008, 2:38 am EST

Why do people have a problem with Bruce expressing his personal opinion. He is as entitled as anyone else and if he genuinely believes in a cause and tries to influence others about it, it’s so much better than just staying aloof and not doing anything. He has made his millions and can very easily sit back and do nothing, even more so when he is risking antagonising so many people. I also find it starnage when people comment that Bruce being a multi millionnaire should not comment about oridnary people. Bruce did not have a great deal of miney until his late 20’s-early 30’s. What your personality is and your outlook in life would have got framed by this stage. I am 36 and by a some miracle even if i were to become a millionnaire , my outlook would not change

Christy | 10/6/2008, 8:19 pm EST

F U Jesse. At least we know that Bruce is going to be right this time, and you won’t. Obama/Biden ‘08 for me, man. I guess it’s Mccain the pain and Palin, the pig with lipstick who hunts and is opposed to gay marriage for you.The sad thing is that Palin has ‘’dear dear friends of mine who are gay'’.She and Mccain the pain are the next Bush/Cheney.

jayski | 10/6/2008, 4:58 pm EST

If you think this guy’s a no talent, I really gotta wonder what you listen to or even how sensitively you think. “41 Shots” is hardly a cop condemnation song. You really ought to use your ears and listen and you really ought to think. That’s a shame.

88keys | 10/6/2008, 3:28 pm EST

events like this are just as much about “get out your wallet” as “get out the vote” - playing in your home court to your faithful might encourage some of them to go home and write the check

Kilgore Trout | 10/6/2008, 3:03 pm EST

Who knew Republican operatives read Rolling Stone? I guess they are preparing themselves for next year when they’ll have nothing better to do than troll the internet 24/7 dumping on President Obama and all the he stands for…you know, all that smelly economic justice stuff.

Attention, neocons: You had the White House, both houses of congress, and the Supreme Court, and you pissed it all away for one simple reason: your economic philosophy and world-view are morally bankrupt.

Tony J | 10/6/2008, 3:00 pm EST

“The man has no talent and never did” What???

How can anyone put that in print about Bruce Springsteen?

Thanks, Bruce. God Bless America

Pooky | 10/6/2008, 2:43 pm EST

Wait, Bryon - you mean to tell me that Bruce is a human being who lives on this earth? Whewww, thanks for letting us know. All along I thought Bruce was some kind of space alien who arrived here by spaceship trying to brainwash all us earthlings with his music. Thanks again.

Hey Doctor Mabuse | 10/6/2008, 2:00 pm EST

Is Springsteen a human being? OY VEY i guess not, right? Damn whiner.

Glen Boyd | 10/6/2008, 1:54 pm EST

Bruce’s “working class hero” act is old and tired. The man has no talent and never did. This is the same guy who released that Cop Killer song telling us how we should hate police officers.

Doctor Mabuse | 10/6/2008, 1:37 pm EST

Lenny | 10/6/2008, 12:26 pm EST

First off, he WAS one of us and knows how it feels to be struggling.
—————-

The key word in your response is “was”–he had to struggle for a short part of his life, that’s true, but putting on a flannel shirt and singing Woody Guthrie songs as if he’s STILL one of the people is idiotic. There are people who have been struggling all their lives just to be hurt by the recent economic debacle–they don’t have millions of dollars to fall back on.

Get over yourself..I’m not a supporter of either of McCain or Obama…we’re supposed to believe Springsteen is like us? Give me a break…try some common sense Jenn..pull your head out of your a$$ and put it back in the sand..

Bryon | 10/6/2008, 12:39 pm EST

So much hatred towards Bruce. wow. I grew up in Freehold, NJ and went to Bruce’s high school. I saw what he saw and feel what he felt. I am pretty sure Bruce in his heart is one of us. I can’t believe the crap you guys are saying about Bruce. He’s a human being that lives on this earth, in this country…the same place we live. It’s humbling to me for a gentleman that makes a ton of money to come out and sing for US. For this country. All you do is come on here and blast him for being patriotic, JUST LIKE US. Shame on all you who dis someone that trying to help get this country on their feet and vote. What is so wrong with that?

Lenny | 10/6/2008, 12:26 pm EST

The flannel shirt millionaire reference was idiotic. First off, he WAS one of us and knows how it feels to be struggling. The fact that he’s worked hard and risen has everything to do with his message and our so called American Dream. In another land, intelligent performers can’t spew their beliefs. And for what it’s worth, i am sure that many Bruce fans will vote for McPain & Fey.

Jenn | 10/6/2008, 12:19 pm EST

Go Bruce! How dare you tell him to F-off you loser! Keep on supporting McCain aka Cheney, and Palin aka Bush!

This Independent Voter is for Obama/Biden 08

Doctor Mabuse | 10/6/2008, 12:06 pm EST

First, get out and vote.

Second, jeez here’s millionaire Bruce in a flannel shirt pretending he’s one of the people. Oy vey, gimme a break!

Jan | 10/6/2008, 11:26 am EST

First of all: register to vote

Secondly: vote for Obama/Biden!

Thanks, Bruce, wish I could’ve been there, but I know all my friends in the Philly area sure were!

It was a great concert - I was | 10/6/2008, 11:13 am EST

Btw, someone commented about why bother doing a concert in Philly because it’s predominantly democrat.

There are two reasons for this. First, this was a concert that was mainly for the volunteers. Philadelphia is a blue city but it still needs to get out the vote in order to keep Pennsylvania blue and that requires alot of volunteers to make it happen.

And 2nd - the concert was not limited to people in Philadelphia. Philadelphia may be blue but we had people from all over southeaster PA, south Jersey and Northern Delaware who were in attendance.

brockbeta6676@gmail.com | 10/6/2008, 11:09 am EST

Why can’t we all just get out and Vote?

Je$$e | 10/6/2008, 10:58 am EST

hahahaha…fuk you Bruce…you are THE most over rated artist of our generation..ALL politicians are skunks..I love how all you sheep will vote for Obama because “the boss” said so..dopes.

greg | 10/6/2008, 10:29 am EST

he’s preachin’ to the choir. philly is already democrat ridden.

Amazing!!! | 10/6/2008, 10:22 am EST

I attended the rally and it was simply amazing. The high point was “This Land is Your Land” seeing the crowd singing along brought me to tears.

Jughead the Maverick | 10/6/2008, 9:56 am EST

Although I do applaud Springsteen for spreading the word of Obama and helping to spread the message of change, but why perform in Philadelphia? Philly has always been a predominately democratic city and their citizens would have voted for Obama regardless if he played there or not. If Springsteen really wanted to get people to vote for Obama, he should have played at one or two of the “Red” goober states where backward-minded people are more likely to vote for McCain. That would have been much more helpful to Obama then playing in a “Blue” state like Pennsylvania.

rocker | 10/6/2008, 9:36 am EST

God Bless Bruce Springsteen for preaching the word.
Society needs to hear the truth and at one time there were many who would voice truth but today it’s not as often.
Mccain is just Bush continued and we can’t afford that.
What kind of government waits till the kingdom come to help their citizens in terrible distress such as the katrina fiasco.
I never thought i would see the things that have happened under this administration and i think the great presidents of the past would be ashamed to see what has happened to our country.
Preach the word brotherman and let’s all voice our word by voting!

Jimmy | 10/6/2008, 9:26 am EST
