Weekend Rock List: Sports Anthems

10/3/08, 3:15 pm EST

The baseball playoffs are in full swing, with the Phillies (surprisingly) dominating the Brewers, the Cubs (predictably) choking against Manny Ramirez and our Mets (sadly) golfing. At least the hockey season starts this weekend. Thus, for this week’s Rock List, we honor those songs that are Sports Anthems. Tell us your (and your team’s) favorites, and on Monday we’ll reveal the final list. Before you bust out the Jock Jams, here are our picks:

Queen – “We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions”
Gary Glitter – “Rock N’ Roll, Part 2″
Neil Diamond – “Sweet Caroline”
Billy Idol – “Mony Mony”
Metallica – “Fuel”

The Raiders taking the field to “Back in Black” and “Hells Bells”at the Oakland Coliseum. If only that excitement translated to wins.

At least the Yankees are not in the playoffs!! Thank God!! Joe Torre must be feeling pretty good right now his Dodgers are in while the Yankees management are kicking themselves in the ass for letting him go. HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH.

Ok for the anthems:

(1) Metallica – “Enter Sandman” (for former(?) Mets’ closer Billy Wagner NOT Yankees Mariano Riviera)

(2) The Ramones – “Blitzkrieg Bop” (usually the “Hey ho, let’s go, Hey ho, let’s go” gets played in between innings)

(3) John Fogarty – “Centerfield”

(4) “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” – by ??? (don’t know) – the Cubbies and many other clubs 7th inning stretch song)

The Mets play “Taking Care of Business” after every win, so that should be included. Also, every stadium I’ve ever entered has played “Welcome to the Jungle” by GNR and “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC, so you’ve gotta put those on there. And how about “Jump” by Van Halen for every NBA jump ball in history?

Phaser14 | 10/3/2008, 4:33 pm EST

After every Red Sox win at Fenway, the stadium rocks to “Dirty Water” by the Standells followed by “Tessie” by the Dropkick Murphys. Good times in Boston again this year!

The song “Holy Diver” by Dio plays when Pat Burrell comes to bat for the Phillies. This can be quite distressing when his batting average begins to plummet, as the song title takes on a whole new meaning.

That being said, HA! HA!HA!HA! I knew this magazine was filled w/closet Mets fans, but now you’ve finally admitted it! No matter what you clowns do, you’ll never be able to live down two years in a row with a disappearing act in September!

Oh, and Trevor Hoffman comes out to “Hell’s Bells” by AC/DC in the 9th inning in San Diego. Not a Padres fan, but it’s pretty cool.
