In a new radio ad running in southwest Virginia, bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley speaks out on behalf of Barack Obama. “I think I know a little something about the families around here,” he says. “We all need a change.” The Grammy winner is so popular in his home state, bumper stickers proclaiming “Ralph Stanley for President” popped up in the 1970s, according to the Wall Street Journal. With his endorsement, Stanley joins a chorus of artists rallying behind the Democratic candidate, including Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Kanye West, Stevie Wonder and the Grateful Dead.

Bought time. Bought time we got some representation. Bought time we got someone with some substance endorsing someone with some substance. Time’s here. We’ve arrived. Good things are coming.
Jughead | 10/3/2008, 4:04 pm EST
That Ralph Stanley is such a maverick – endorsing Obama when so many of his redneck brethren vote Republican.
Vernon Schubel | 10/3/2008, 4:56 pm EST
This is so beautiful. One of America’s true artistic geniuses speaking humbly and quietly from the heart. This is the voice of the real American heartland. Louder than bombs.

My heart was warmed and my spirit soared when I heard this news. I learned it the day I arrived in Big Stone Gap SWVA to serve the campaign.
Dr. Stanley is a legend in the hills of Southwest Virginia and his support is invaluable.
Strangely enough, I was wondering about his political persuasion on the drive down here. I’m sure it’s because I grew up in Upper-East Tennessee on the Virginia line and I have always known about Ralph Stanley’s own campaign for the presidency : )
Thank you Dr. Ralph.
Let’s turn SWVA Blue!!!
..if there is any indication from the good people I’ve met so far, we have our chances.
Delia | 10/5/2008, 8:05 pm EST
Ralph Stanley, bless iz heart, was a vocal supporter of John Edwards early on during the primary–you know, back in prehistory–and it’s wonderful to hear him continue to speak out in that righteous voice of his.

Yeah! Go Ralph! I always knew Ralph had a soft spot in his heart for candidates that are friends with terrorists and attended a racist church for 20 years!
Bubba | 10/6/2008, 8:35 pm EST
Ralph supports a candidate that attended a r_a_c_i_s_t church for 20 years? Say it ain’t so Ralph!
Spencer | 10/8/2008, 11:15 pm EST
Way to go Ralph. Your endorsement is as beautiful as your music. Both show clearly what a beautiful hear you have.
Thank you

Ralph Stanley is not a Christian. Endorsing a candiate that has voted for partial birth abortion? Unbelievable. Lord hear our prayer, John McCain for our next President….

In a country where there is freedom of religion, there is still freedom of religious bashing. Who cares what God he talks to? Ralph is speaking the truth.

I’ll say… when yall can’t even spell something is very wrong and we need change. I’ve got a ten and need a five and some ones.

So sorry to hear that someone so connected to bluegrass could be so blind to politics. This nation will hit an all-time low on Tuesday if Obama becomes President.
Garth Hudson Brooks | 10/24/2008, 3:18 pm EST
Wow…what a random endorsement. Love Ralph, and got to meet him once, but … damn. I guess next we’ll see an RS headline bark: “Andrew Ridgley, The Starland Vocal Band, Chuck Berry, Emo Phillips, Roy Clark, and Tom Wopat endorse Obama for President!”
Sheesh…
Bluegrass Jeff | 10/25/2008, 4:58 pm EST
I heard on KBOO radio in Portland, OR that Ralph had made an endorsement, but the station said since it was a direct endorsement they would not say for whom, and suggested listeners Google Ralph. Go Ralph Go, Go Obama Go!
JAKER | 10/26/2008, 10:51 pm EST
WE NEED AMERICANS FOR PRESIDENTS WHO BELIEVE IN AMERICAN VALUES AND WHO LOVE FELLOW AMERICANS, WHO HAVE COMPASION FOR THEIR BROTHERS. IF MC CAIN IS TOO OLD TO BE PRESIDENT, STANLEY IS TOO OLD TOO KNOW WHO OBAMA IS.IF HE DID KNOW HE WOULDN’T WANT SUCH A MAN TO BE OUR PRESIDENT.
Ron | 10/27/2008, 11:21 am EST
Obviously, Ralph sold his soul to Satan in exchange for a few years of popularity with the liberals
donny bluegrass | 10/27/2008, 11:38 am EST
I’m so thankful for Dr. Ralph’s endorsement of Obama. It is heartfelt and sincere. He should be invited by Pres. Obama to the White House.
Lena Roane | 10/27/2008, 3:28 pm EST
I could hardly wait to destroy all of Ralph Stanley’s CD’s, records, and anything else that serves as a reminder of one so blind to a friend of terrorists, Muslims and all that our country’s principals stand for. NO more going to bluegrass concerts where you are on the playbill. What does your little Christian Grandson think of this…is his testimony on stage just part of your act? God help you to wake up even if you are suffering from dementia.
Straighthead | 10/27/2008, 3:33 pm EST
Been a fan of yours all of my life – at least 50 years and now I am through listening and patronizing your concerts and paying $20 for CD’s. When (if) this friend of terrorists who hates America becomes your president and takes away oil and gas so that you cannot ride around in your big bus…just remember who you endorsed!
Brother No Longer | 10/27/2008, 3:39 pm EST
Hope you are practicing your miserable babble “O Death” to sing at the inauguration. Can’t think of anything more appropriate.
David W | 10/27/2008, 6:06 pm EST
I am shocked and disgusted that Ralph Stanley would ever support a man like Obama. I don’t think his music will ever feel the same for me. He peddles gospel music and at the same time supports a man whose values are so far removed from him (or are they?”
Redneckhater | 10/27/2008, 7:53 pm EST
Just what I thought. Bluegrass is supported by a bunch of racist redneck hate-mongers. This man has made beautiful music all his life that has enriched your own lives. And because he, maybe, doesn’t want to see the country’s government function only to protect the interests of large corporations and ultra-rich Americans, you say you’ll never listen to his music again. Sweet!!!!! Won’t his concerts be so much better without Jethro, Bubba and the rest of the drunk rednecks there? I can’t wait! In the meantime, please, keep voting republican. And when you’re still living in your single-wide trailer in Virginia with no job and 15 redneck little offspring running around, you can thank Mcain/Palin for sending your job and our country’s future overseas.
GO RALPH! YOU ARE THE MAN! And I, and the rest of your new found fans will continue to support you.
banjo Bob | 10/27/2008, 8:19 pm EST
About time America REALLY woke up and heard and recognized what a gift Barack Obama is to this Country! GO BARACK!
Wva Diddy | 10/27/2008, 9:39 pm EST
Ralph has totally lost it. Not even his own community would elect him when he ran for Clerk of the Court back in the 70’s. His endorsement will cost Obama many more votes than it will gain him. !!!!
Christian | 10/28/2008, 2:11 pm EST
I guess Redneckhater lives in a mansion bought by Obama & his shady friends. I suppose this is why he doesn’t need to live in ‘ a single-wide trailor with 15 redneck offspring’. What an insult to the people of our beautiful mountain states !!!
As for Ralph Stanley :: God forgive him. He is too old to know better !!
Redneckhater | 10/28/2008, 4:40 pm EST
Christian,
sorry, no mansion. No help from Obama and his friends. (How could they help anyway when rednecks like you keep the intelligent people out of office?) Just a ski-shack in Utah(speaking of beautiful mountain states) and a lot of hard work. And as I said, please keep voting republican. And when there are no banks left because they have all failed due to no oversight. And there is no military left to protect us because of this pointless, endless war that is destroying it. And all the jobs are gone because the republican government thinks it’s ok for an American company to send the work overseas because it saves them money. And the roads, rails, bridges, communication lines and the rest of the things that make up our infrastructure are deteriorated beyond repair because there’s no money left to fix them. And Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid have been eliminated but it now costs you $5000 just to get a doctors exam because there’s no one regulating the medical industry. Then, maybe then you will get it. But based on the level of intelligence you seem to display I doubt it.
I am as patriotic and loving of all the states as anyone. I’ve spent quite a bit of time in Virginia. Beautiful state. I was born a stones throw away and love the region and the majority of the people. It’s those pockets of people who think like you that turned me off.
I own a business. I make good money. I also believe that I should probably pay a little more taxes than I do now. America has made me what I am. Don’t we owe it to the country to take care of it? How is 4 or 8 more years of spend, spend, spend without taxing someone going to help. Especially when all the spending is just to protect big-business and the already-rich.
The economy is already in a state of collapse. How is the rebublican idea of tax less and spend more going to change that? I guess you’ve figured out someway to buy $500 worth of food for your family with a bank account that has $50 in it. That’s the republican idea of how to fix the economy. Put it on the credit card we’ll pay it later. Try that in your own life sometime. Trust me it doesn’t work.
So once again I say to all of you. THANK GOD FOR PEOPLE LIKE RALPH STANLEY. People who aren’t afraid, even when surrounded by the enemy, to stand up and say what they believe.

I am so very proud of Dr. Stanley. Its about time that people vote and speak out for the way they feel instead of being ashamed becasue it’s “not cool” to vote other than republican if you listen to bluegrass. It shows that Ralph is truley educated and know what best for the common people, he knows that small business needs a helping hand and that this country was built by hard working farmers and men and women who are not afraid to work thier fingers to the bone. I was raised on bluegrass and proudly by father was was never ashamed of supporting the democratic party. Go Ralph, I am sure you dont have to worry about people not showing up to your concerts, you just earned yourself a whole new set of listners and maybe now all of the people who are from all over the world wontbe afraid to show up to a festival and we can all enjoy the music that is for eveyone together.
Lisa | 11/19/2008, 12:24 am EST
For those of you who are judging Ralph Stanley I feel sorry for you. He is a christian man and does not support abortion. That is just a platform. Look at this country after eight yrs. of Bush. Mothers not only killing unborn babies and getting by with it they are killing their toddlers!! Before you judge Ralph Stanley remember vengence is Mine Saith the Lord!! If you think Ralph is reading all this garbage you are wasting your time. God fights his battles for him.
Dave | 11/25/2008, 8:59 pm EST
Go Ralph, you are a legend…and I will have you know, there are a lot of bluegrass fans who are liberals.

Wow. I know this article is a couple months old at this point, but I had to comment. What a bunch of backwards-thinking, selfish, tyrannical lot you bluegrass fans are. You’ve loved Ralph Stanley’s music all this time and you’ve suddenly decided to toss all that aside because he supported Obama’s bid for the White House? Disgusting.
I’m continually amazed that Republican supporters continue to think that just because you support a candidate other than the GOP, that you hate America. It’s insulting at best, sad at worst.
I also love how people fabricate all these supposed “shady” connections Obama has, and that he’s supposedly a friend to terrorists. Didn’t we already debunk all that? Yeah. We did. But it’s okay for a flip-flopping war-monger like McCain to change his allegiances on pretty much everything to appeal to the middle-of-the-roaders – and let’s not forget the Keating Five. If you’re going to crucify Obama for having a tangential association with a reformed terrorist, you could also do the same for McCain’s association to a group of individuals who scammed Americans out of millions.
And Obama as the Anti-Christ? You people are delusional. Disgusting, hateful and out-of-your-mind delusional.
My best friend and I sit on completely opposite sides of the political fence. Our differences don’t drive our relationship, our common interests do. But hey, go ahead and sit on your high horse and judge Ralph Stanley. You loved him once. Now you’re just showing your true colors. Aren’t most Conservative and Republicans supposed to be Christians? Pretty sure god wouldn’t be okay with your harsh judgment of Ralph Stanley. Isn’t he supposed to be the only one allowed to judge? Shame on you. You’re not Christians. You’re no better than the Cathars, who either converted or wiped out anyone who didn’t follow their beliefs in the name of god. Real Christians will pray for you, even though they shouldn’t.

For all the individuals saying they won’t see Ralph Stanley anymore/play his music. Go #$%% off, and while your at burn all your Junior Johnson mem. stuff, he endorsed him too.
I will continue to see him……especially his shows in California…….LOVE YA RALPH, see ya in April!!
Ralph has always been a southern democrat……….

I have to think poor old Mr.Stanley
(and I say that respectfully) is one of those good old folks who still are deluded by the idea that the Democrats are the honorable defenders of the poor and down-trodden. A lot of good folks are still in this state of delusion, and always will be, I suppose.
I’m not mad at him, rather I just pity him (again, I say that respectfully, not as a jaded insult).
God bless him. Maybe someday the truth will find it’s way into the minds of good folks like Ralph.

Did one guy just call Barack Obama the anti-Christ. Damn it man, read your Bible. The anti-Christ will have everyone’s love and no one will suspect the insidiousness. Southerners for Obama, because Bush made rural people just look plain silly.
Kev | 7/10/2009, 11:24 am EST
What does bigger government and more taxes have to do with helping the economy? Don’t get me wrong. McCain sucked too, but the democrat’s fiscal policy is a time tested failure. As far as I’m concerned this whole ordeal these days is a repeat of vietnam and carter. Not to mention the bartering of constitutional rights like the right to life and the right to bear arms. Noones perfect but i guess people never learn.

The Bush Presidency should be known as the disappearing presidency. When the twin towers were hit Bush DISAPPEARED. The Iraq nuclear missiles DISAPPEARED. The CIA tapes of interrigation DISAPPEARED. Bush was nowhere to be found when ’shotgun Dick’ disclosed that Valerie Plame was a (covert) CIA agent which was classified information. When our embassy in Serbia burned Bush DISAPPEARED. Bush’s Robber Baron presidency has made our money DISAPPEAR. With Voodoo Economics Georgie has made most of our jobs DISAPPEAR. But what would happen if Bush really disappeared? Can you imagine ‘Deadeye Dick’ with his finger on the nuclear trigger? If that were to happen everyone might just DISAPPEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He did manage to APPEAR just long enough to lobby for and sign into law CORPORATE WELFARE for the international banks. Goodbye Goofball Georgie, have fun in Texass.
