Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are set to perform during Super Bowl XLIII’s halftime show on February 1st, 2009, in Tampa, Florida. Springsteen will be the fifth veteran act in a row at the Super Bowl. Since Janet Jackson and Justin Justin Timberlake’s disastrous 2004 performance, the NFL has booked Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Prince and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The show has become the highest-profile gig in music — Petty and Prince both saw big sales bumps for their back catalogs after their hit-filled performances.

No plans have been announced, but the Super Bowl gig suggests an active 2009 for Springsteen and the E Street Band, who completed a world tour behind his Magic album in August. Producer Brendan O’Brien has said that unreleased songs remain from the Magic sessions, which could provide material for another album.

Why can’t they get someone who has talen? I’m sick of these old has-been rockers.

matt | 9/29/2008, 1:43 pm EST

blame mtv, theres no one better no one wants to see that joke lil wayne, no one wants to see kid rock throwing a mic back and forth, no one wants that emo shit at half time. im glad they get the old rockers who can still sell out stadiums and arenas and play for 3 hours compared to a rapper playing for a hundred people drunk and playing for 20 minutes.

Japes | 9/29/2008, 1:52 pm EST

All of these “old has-been rockers” have more talent than any bands or artists these days. Who else can carry and appeal to an audience that big? Nobody is legit anymore. McCartney, The Stones, Petty and even Prince still have it where most bands today couldn’t pull off that gig if they tried. At the end of the day its about mass audience appeal, the veterans are tried, tested and true, you always know they will connect.

tom | 9/29/2008, 2:45 pm EST

Tom Petty’s summer tour grossed 32 million. Not bad for a “has been.” Glen Boyd: wake up.

Jon | 9/29/2008, 3:36 pm EST

Glen, you are a fucking idiot.

johnnyb | 9/29/2008, 3:52 pm EST

mm, i thought it was going to play metallica, thats a shame

Sad but true | 9/29/2008, 4:02 pm EST

There hasn’t been a new act in the last 10 years that has the appeal of The Boss, Petty or McCartney, or the Stones and they’ll probably never will be again. The industry has shifted into a singles format and sign artists who are capable of only creating one or two good songs, not whole albums.

Tom | 9/29/2008, 4:14 pm EST

Springsteen for Halftime sounds good to me.

JP | 9/29/2008, 5:00 pm EST

I wonder how long they are gonna let Bruce play? If the first half is a blow out, then they might let him continue playing through the rest of the game.

indian | 9/29/2008, 6:00 pm EST

should be good

David | 9/29/2008, 6:23 pm EST

I believe that a better choice would have been AC/DC.

Paul | 9/29/2008, 6:34 pm EST

Hey Glen aka dumbass, talen is actually spelled talent. Witness the Boss in concert before you make your idiotic statements.

danielle | 9/29/2008, 7:15 pm EST

thank GOD the jonas brothers aren’t doing it.. lots of people said they were going too

Jake | 9/29/2008, 7:34 pm EST

AC/DC blows

Chek your facts | 9/29/2008, 11:14 pm EST

answer to japes:

“even Prince still have it”?

Prince halftime was considered the best halftime show ever, plus it was the third most watched event in history. So the right quote is: even McCartney, The Stones, Petty they still have it, couse Prince still is the best.

Mike | 9/29/2008, 11:26 pm EST

I totally agree with you, Prince show was the best, i mean all these legendary acts like The Stones and McCartney have been so lame and Petty is not on that category, so even worse.

Prince “Purple Rain” performance was breathtaking, I don’t remember a better TV live performance ever, that little guy rocks!

Moe | 9/30/2008, 12:02 pm EST

Glen, just to let you know, those old rockers, are the ones with the real talent!!

Japes | 9/30/2008, 1:05 pm EST

I’d take Petty over Prince any day of the week.

Lisa | 9/30/2008, 1:23 pm EST

Who’s Tom Petty?

Midget | 9/30/2008, 1:52 pm EST

The Superbowl has been very very good to me.

# 1 Bruce Spingstreet Fan ! | 9/30/2008, 2:00 pm EST

This is great news. I’m a huge football fan and a huge Spingstreet fan so this will make for a great night! I hope the Detroit Lions go all the way and hit a lot of homeruns in the Superbowl plus Spingstreet plays some classic tunes like Freebird. That’ll be cool.

Harry Peratesties | 9/30/2008, 3:55 pm EST

Hard to believe Born in the USA was 25 years ago.

ray | 9/30/2008, 5:13 pm EST

Should be the best halftime show ever. No one ive seen puts more into it than Springsteen.

Lisa | 9/30/2008, 5:30 pm EST

The Boss will kick ass defently may be closer to Prince, still the best halftime show ever!

rfschraf | 9/30/2008, 8:45 pm EST

What a stellar choice. Unfortunately for the 2 teams playing for the Lombardi Trophy, the game itself will take “second billing” to the greatest performer in rock n’ roll history. At least the players will get an extended halftime to rest in the locker room. Tampa can now sell out the Super Bowl without even announcing the participants.

madmilker | 10/5/2008, 1:21 am EST

“betcha” a hefty $9.8 trillion of US debt, one printing press against Executive Order 1110 tat he gets a soar throat singing praise for Obama first and doesn’t make the gig.

flatwound | 10/5/2008, 8:39 pm EST

I’ve been a Springsteen fan my whole life, but I’ve never realized how stupid he is until now… Bruce, Barack is a liar and obviously unqualified for the job, just ask Mr. Biden, he agrees with me.

cathy J | 10/5/2008, 11:37 pm EST

The Boss is the only act who can really Rock the half time show, it would really be awesome if it were THE BEARS, and THE Boss!!!!! Rock on BRUCE we love you, I am soooo looking forward to Feb 2009!!!!! Now that our CUBS are out of it ;( I hope they do Glory Days!!!!

I am only 12 years old and yet i love Bruce Springsteen and know everything about him. I went to my first concert when i was 7 at Gillette Stadium 8/2/03. He sang “The Ties That Bind” my favorite song!

Daryl | 10/24/2008, 1:02 am EST

AC/DC would have been the perfect choice. What songs are played more often than AC/DC to pump up the crowd….answer NO ONE!

Alex | 1/4/2009, 10:27 pm EST

The setlist will probably be:

1. Born in the USA
2. Glory Days
3. Thunder Road
4. Born to Run

I want it to be:

1. Radio Nowhere
2. Badlands
3. Thunder Road
4. Born to Run

Matt in VA | 1/9/2009, 4:51 pm EST

Nice to see Bruces publicists have the comment troll thing down, anyway.

There are literally hundreds of young, hot, safe artists that they could choose from. To wit:
Taylor Swift – (huge crossover hit)
Brad Paisley
Carrie Underwood
Anyone else on Country radio.

Daughtry
David Cook
Any other successful Idol winner.

O.A.R.
3 Doors Down
Alter Bridge
Jason Mraz
Nickleback
Coldplay
Le ona Lewis
Natasha Bedingfield

All safe, sorta whitebread choices, which seems to be what the NFL is looking for.

Grant | 1/26/2009, 9:55 am EST

One of these years I want to see METALLICA do a Superbowl halftime show. No mellow layed back hippy bullshit. We’re watching football here. Full pedal to the metal! Songs that could double as football themes. Broken Beat and Scarred, Seek and Destroy, No Remorse. Shouldn’t a football halftime show pump everyone up?

J | 1/27/2009, 10:05 am EST

ApologetiX would be awesome.
