“Christmas on Mars,” The “Chinese Democracy” of Rock Movies, Is Here

9/26/08, 3:08 pm EST

After years of production, the Flaming Lips’ movie Chrismas On Mars has finally been unleashed on the masses. Filmed by Wayne Coyne and fellow Oklahoman Bradley Beesley (who also directed Lips projects The Fearless Freaks and Christmas at the Zoo) in fits and starts since around 2001, the film appears to be an amalgam of 2001, Solaris, Event Horizon and Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. The film stars Coyne and the Lips’ Steve Drozd but also features apparances by Fred Armisen, Elijah Wood and Isaac Brock. wow I’m going to have to check this out on DVD….I missed the theater dates but if it beats “No Direction Home” and “Runnin’ Down A Dream” then count me in!

I fucking love Wayne Coyne. The most ridiculous concept in the world ends up looking like a heartfelt tribute to classic b-movies. A beautiful man he is. November 22 in Minneapolis!!!

Agreed - “Fearless Freaks” is the most genuine, heartwarming, and interesting rock doc there is. Hope “Christmas on Mars” is good!

I think it’s a bit misleading to label “Christmas on Mars” the “Chinese Democracy” of Rock Movies although I do know where you are coming from. There are two major differences:

1.) Christmas on Mars has managed to be completed in the decade in which it was started.

2.) This film had a very low budget and if Wayne had had the recording budget of Chinese Democracy (what is it $13 Million by now? Who knows?) He probably would’ve finished it and released it somewhere between Yoshimi and Mystics.

However, I do look forward to seeing this film. I hope it’s at least half as good as the Flaming Lips documentary “Fearless Freaks.” Hands down the best rock-doc ever. (yes better than “No Direction Home” although that’s a good one too.)
