Kanye West has taken a page from the Radiohead playbook by offering up his new single “Love Lockdown” in isolated song stems to allow fans to remix the 808s & Heartbreak track. But whereas Radiohead charged 99 cents for each stem, West has posted all of them for free over at his blog. As of now, there’s no contest aligning itself with the remixes — it’s just for recreational purposes to keep you occupied while you wait for the release of 808s on “November something.”

Umm… Trent Reznor did the same thing with his tracks from The Slip, and he did it for free. And he then let users upload and download those remixes for free as well.

Its bothersome that Radiohead gets all this publicity for doing great things in a mediocre fashion, where as other artists do those same things and take them to levels above and beyond what Radiohead did, yet they don’t get half the credit.

It’s because Radiohead is the ultimate overrated college-alt-rock band. Even though The Slip wasn’t the best NIN work I have heard, I was grateful that I had the access that I did. And to all the Kanye haters out there, at least this guy has been pushing the envelope of hip-hop ever since he broke on the scene. His arrogance can be a little grating, but I like my rock stars pompous when they can back it up. The more interactive that fans feel they can be with their artists, the more money they will willingly give to those artists.

Actually, Trent was doing this same thing with NIN music since long before The Slip. He started doing this back in 2005 with With Teeth, continued it with Year Zero (even starting a website devoted to allowing fans to post their remixes of his music). Its always been given to the fans for free also. Radiohead took a page out of the NIN playbook when they did this with In Rainbows, only they charged the fans 99 cents for it. Get with the program, Rolling Stone!

I gotta say, some things Kanye has said made me dislike him, but after hearing song after song that really struck me as unique and catchy, I can’t deny I like his music. This song really takes the cake for me, even though it is pretty simple.

I did a Trance remix of it :)
