On the first U.S. date of Weezer’s “Troublemaker” tour, the sold out crowd at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Massachusetts was able to observe two of the many bands the headliners have begat. The hooky Canadian power pop monster Tokyo Police Club and the emo-via-U2 Angels & Airwaves both contain a bit of Weezer’s DNA (especially the band’s 90s output). It turned the evening into an interesting example of reverse-evolution.

Rivers Cuomo and his band took the stage — featuring two drum kits, multiple keyboards and a small trampoline that was removed in favor of a larger one— dressed in matching white jumpsuits. Four songs in, they switched to red jumpsuits and invited Tom DeLonge and Atom Willard from Angels & Airwaves to join them for a rousing rendition of “Undone – Sweater Song.” Throughout the set, Cuomo leapt and yelped like a manic leprechaun.

The band mixed much-beloved deep cuts (”Pink Triangle”) with more recent gems (”Pork and Beans”). The strangest moments of the night came during their covers of Oasis‘ “Morning Glory” and Nirvana’s “Sliver,” the latter of which came after Cuomo played the Cobain-saluting “Heart Songs” on a record player. At the end of the night, Weezer invited about 30 fans (many from the nearby Berklee College of Music) to jam with them on “Island In The Sun” and “Beverly Hills.” One of them even played a didgeridoo. As Cuomo remarked to guitarist Brian Bell earlier in the night, “That was pretty dope.”

Half the kids on stage were actually from the Lowell High School band and I think the rest were from Berklee

Cover of Morning Glory was actually pretty good. Hope they make it a regular.

The ’stache is a tribute to his father. No lies.

Given the length of most of the songs, sounds like it was a short show.

Same set here in Portland last night, xept they switched Dope Nose (fully started by the crowd’s oh-oh-oh singing) & My Name Is Jonas (or Me Llamo Yo-nas as Rivers said at the end).
The best part? Forget Morning Glory (which I’m sure was fine & all)…Pat took lead on a literal note-for-note rendition of Speak To Me & Breath…yes even the guitar solo…all Pat. That was more dope than their noses. Other than that, Rivers doesn’t sing enough & A&A just plain sucks. Long Live the Weez

Saw them last night in in LA at the Forum. Rivers needs to sing more. He did not sing lead on El Scorcho, Perfect Situation, or Dope Nose. It was as if I was seeing the Beatles and Ringo inexplicably sings Hey Jude. Moments of greatness, moments of mass exodus to the restrooms. B minus.

saw them in concert -pretty sad.
