Ray Davies: Kinks Are “Three Quarters Of The Way” To Reunion

The KinksRay Davies says the band is “three quarters of the way” toward finally reuniting. “The stumbling block is my brother because he was seriously ill recently and whether he feels ready to do it,” Davies told the BBC. Guitarist Dave Davies suffered a stroke in 2004. Dave’s health might not be the only issue, however: Back in January, Dave responded to Kinks reunion rumors by saying “It would be like a poor remake of Night of the Living Dead” before poking fun at brother Ray’s songwriting talents. Still, Ray Davies made a good point when he said to the BBC, “The amazing thing is that the Kinks are the only band, of that period, where the only original members are still alive.” If the Kinks were to reunite, Ray hopes some new music will come out of it, as he “couldn’t do it just for nostalgic reasons.”

Hey anonymous – you didn’t “PLEASE” enough times. You need to add about three more lines of “PLEASE” in there and throw in a comment about “Jesus” and that magic should work in getting the Kinks to reunite.

I am three quarters of the way to not really caring. Kinks are legendary, of course, but come on. The only stumbling block is deciding which brother signs the fat checks.

There’s not much joy in the world today. The Kinks are a chance to enjoy ourselves and see them perform live. Rock ‘N roll is what we need!

They’re so old, they should be wearing Jesus Starter jackets on stage.

The Kinks had they day, love them, love Ray, but I don’t think they really have anything to offer outside of nostalgia. Ray’s solo discs are strong. He does not need The Kinks back to write/record/tour.

That said, go out and buy Lola, Village Green, Something Else and the early singles best of on Rhino TODAY

I hope it happens. Ray could get an all-star lineup of session musicians if he wanted, but he wants this. If it inspires him, it’ll be a good thing. As great as he is, his best days are behind him- I’d love to hear a Kinks reunion and see if the old magic surfaces.

I love the Kinks because they’re nutty and a way off-center. I saw Dave Davies do a solo spoken-word type gig some 13 years ago. He was funny and self-deprecating. I wish him well. My four year-old daughter can sing “Superman” and “All of the Day and All of the Night.” While my son would rather listen to Slayer, it’s nice to have something they both like.

I’m one of the best soundmen in the biz and I’d tour with these guy’s for free (if Don Was will let me!) So let’s do it!!!!

basser | 9/25/2008, 2:43 pm EST

They should tour. If Dave can and wants to, and Peter Quaife’s health holds up, the original four should tour together, one last time. Who cares if people say it’s nostalgic. If it gives me a chance to finally see The Kinks live, people can say what they want. I don’t care. Just tour in Oklahoma-Texas-Arkansas-Kansas -Tennessee area, OK Ray? Thanks.

I’ve seen the kinks a bunch of times over the year…. I could care less how old they are. Day light come and me want to see the kinks again!!!!

I wonder why there are no bands today as fine as the Kinks.

tom | 9/25/2008, 10:02 pm EST

doesn’t Ray have a guitarist in his solo band that can handle the parts ? the Kinks box set is supposed to come out in december and they should promote it in some kind of way.

Legends of rock should be visible as well perform when possible. The Kinks are one of the most recognized names in rock history. Whether you think they still have it or not, nothing can take away from their legacy. BRING THEM ON!!

Kinks.. are one of the greatest bands we have. Surely they would be warmly greeted, and screamed for! There’s a massive number of people from that era and those who found the Kinks since! Yes to KINKS.. Chicago loves you! Best to your brother, Ray. We will cut him a break (absolutely) and we all hope he is getting better. KINKS! YES!
