Metallica, The Stooges, Run-DMC Lead Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominees

9/22/08, 12:01 am EST

Metallica, Run-DMC and The Stooges are among the nominees for the 2009 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class. For the first time in 12 years, the ceremony will be held April 4th in Cleveland, home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Other nominees include Jeff Beck, Chic, Wanda Jackson, War, Little Anthony and the Imperials and Bobby Womack.

If Run-DMC get voted in, they will be the second hip-hop group behind 2008 inductees Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five. First-time nominees Metallica have grabbed the honor in only their second year of eligibility, while fellow first timers the Stooges have been eligible for well over a decade. This marks the fifth time that Chic has been nominated for the Hall. Tickets for the ceremony — which will be held at Cleveland’s Public Hall — will be made available to the public, a Hall of Fame first.

No Judas priest,Maiden, kiss or deep purple this is complete bullshit. Without these bands Metallica would not exist.

layloni | 11/15/2008, 12:59 am EST

I agree that Deep Purple should definely be on the list. Smoke on the Water was one of the first songs I learned on many instruments (flute, sax, guitar, and bass guitar).
I also think that metal has been overlooked…judas priest, iron maiden, slayer, etc.
I am happy with the Metallica choice, but i agree their are others who may have deserved it first.

Stooges
Chic
Wanda Jackson
Little Anthony and the Imperials
Jeff Beck

All others may go now.

And Heart and ELO most definitely for the next couple of years…

Most overdue for the RNR Hall:

1. STOOGES
2. MC5
3. New York Dolls
4. Chicago
5. ABBA

Yeah, you read me right–ABBA. In terms of worldwide sales and popularity, ABBA are only second in history to the Beatles. They’ve sold a quarter billion records! And they’ve managed to stay relevant in popular culture (Mamma Mia! musical and movie) and make money without reuniting ONCE EVER! Other bands struggle on stage performing while in their 60s and 70s, while Bjorn and Benny write songs for musicals in the studio and make bank! And without the Swedish ABBA, no band that didn’t come from America or England could ever have a shot to make it in the music business, even today! They deserve it! And yes they could rock fairly well (listen to their early albums). And “Weird Al” Yankovic should make it based on his singular contribution and longetivity as a “novelty act” alone. He’s amazing. I know I’m a dark horse here, at least based on my last two picks…

veggipinto | 10/4/2008, 10:08 pm EST

The RnR HoF is not what it seems. Qualified artists are left out quite often. It’s kinda like, well, remember high school? As far as Rolling Stone magazine, since the 70’s they’ve been out of touch. I’m not sure who the nominees and some inductees had to suck off but the HoF will not be getting any of my hard earned $. I’m not going to worry about what some corporation justifies!

esc4p3d | 9/30/2008, 10:25 pm EST

why don’t you guys just throw “darts” @ a board or close your eyes and point to a group, makes as much sense as run dmc being nominated.

Kon Krypton | 9/29/2008, 2:28 pm EST

Hey, if we’re talking about honoring those who made Rock what it is today, we need Moody Blues, ELO, Monkees (YES, the Monkees), Rush, Styx, Boston, Foreigner. NOW, please!

dbri | 9/29/2008, 10:08 am EST

KISS and Cheap Trick. C’mon already.

BA | 9/28/2008, 8:13 pm EST

The Hall of Fame is run by the same people who run this magazine so if you have complaints file it with Rolling Stone. Rolling Stone hates KISS therefore KISS will never be in the Hall of Fame. Do not view the Rock and Roll Hall the same as sports hall’s for instance because the Rock one is basically run by a very small group with extreme agendas.

Rock Music Expert | 9/28/2008, 6:07 pm EST

Hello? Are you kidding me ?

New kids on the block should be in before Metallica .

And Pet shop boys before Jeff Beck.

Village people should be before stooges.

Culture Club should be before stevie ray vaughn.

Dj Jazzy jeff and the fresh prince
should be inducted before Deep Purple.

These bands should never be allowed in they are not rock and roll! see list below

Rush ,deep purple, thin lizzy,
alice cooper ,doobie brothers , grand funk railroad, cheap trick ,
elo, moody blues ,war,rush, yes,
motorhead ,genesis, iron maiden ,ozzy solo, judas priest, rainbow, foghat,

Demand NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK for the ( Rock Hall of fame) Now!
End of story

metallica are you kidding me?

Does anyone have a clue what rock is ? Nkotb is the real deal greatest rock band in history
better than the beatles, rolling stones ,led zeppelin etc.

Metallica are you kidding me ?
Thay are not rock at all

wrecksracer | 9/28/2008, 1:51 am EST

As long as Link Wray and the Wraymen aren’t in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it really isn’t The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was recording proto-metal in the 50’s. Practically invented the Power Chord. Got an instrumental banned because it sounded dangerous. A lot of people are listing fine choices, but how many are really more influential than Link Wray? Ask Jeff Beck or Pete Townsend. They owe a lot of their style and sound to Link Wray…

clara | 9/27/2008, 9:21 pm EST

yay for metallica!

kalavastro | 9/27/2008, 6:15 pm EST

i think metallica is the band who run on first place this year for the rock and roll hall of fame.

Rick | 9/27/2008, 8:51 am EST

Since everybody and their brother gets into this ridiculously overhyped and over rated “rock n roll” hall, I nominate The Fragments. That was a band I had back in high school. We did Beatles/Stones and pop covers of the time and were pretty good. So…..since no-one knows what the criteria is……..I nominate my former band because we deserve it as much as some of the acts that are in there.

Al Hala | 9/26/2008, 9:04 pm EST

Where’s Ministry? Without Al Jourgensen’s unit, there is no NIN!

tj in sa | 9/26/2008, 7:37 pm EST

Metallica, yes.

..but before their influences, Maiden, UFO, Scorpions just to name a few.

PTMR | 9/26/2008, 6:58 pm EST

Lots of bands should be in, many of those mentioned…In terms of glaring omissions: Moody Blues have had the widest influence and possibly the longest career.

Starr | 9/26/2008, 6:56 pm EST

I agree, what about Rush? That said, hell yes The Stooges before Rush. Jesus people, learn some music history.

Chicago,Doobie brothers,Moody Blues, and even the Monkees. Or even Mike Nesmith. come on!!!!

What about Pat Boone? He’s the 2nd best selling artist of the 50’s next to Elvis with 38 top ten hits, 6 #1’s 45 million sold and is listed as the #7 singles artist of the rock era. Also where’s Connie Francis and Paul Anka?

Rick | 9/24/2008, 1:04 pm EST

The Sex Pistols didn’t show up in 2007……yawnn………I’m so over these middle age has been-never was-out of tune playin’-always angry at something-rage against anything-talentless anarchists….just go away already….

FunkyMadman | 9/24/2008, 10:51 am EST

Metallica
The Stooges - Long overdue
Jeff Beck - Guitar legend

They all deserved to be in

Run DMC…ummm ok, But where’s Public Enemy, 25 year eligibilty hasn’t come around yet?

What! No Black Flag,No Germs,No Dead Kennedys? and Chic is in,
I rather see Ohio Players in before Chic!!! at least they were
funky as hell and influenced by bunch of HipHop artists.,
Personally, I have no problem with
Rap/HipHop artists being there.

BUT STEVIE RAY,DEEP PURPLE,ALICE COOPER,MC5,CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, LOVE,RUSH,YES,KING CRIMSON,(just to name a few), even Kiss(even though not a big fan of them)
ALL DESERVE TO BE THERE &
STILL HASNT BEEN INDUCTED YET WTF!!!.

Who had the last laugh when Sex Pistols refused to show up at the R&R Hall of Fame back in 2007.
IN YO FACE!!!

fat lady singing | 9/23/2008, 6:26 pm EST

Christ… induct Cheap Trick already! Don’t believe me? Here’s just one piece of data for you - Foo Fighters myspace - list of influences: Cheap Trick AND the lovely Robin Zander mentioned in the first breath. Theres a million other reasons but I’m too lazy to do your research for you unless you can pony up some cash. Its enough already - tis ludicrous. I’m done asking nice - I DEMAND INDUCTION! :)

MokaMaker | 9/23/2008, 3:28 pm EST

What about KISS?!? They’ve been eligible for TEN FREAKIN’ YEARS!!! And never a nomination! If they ever got into the R&RHOF, they’d need to build a new wing onto the place just for them! (Oh, and Rolling Stone: Why, in the history of your rag, have they never made the cover?)

LET EM IN | 9/23/2008, 3:21 pm EST

Moody Blues Steppenwolf
Linda Ronstandt Bad Company
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer
Jethro Tull Neil Diamond
The Guess Who Deep Purple
Tommy James Chicago
Three Dog Night ALICE COOPER
Marc Bolan/T.Rex

JennAgain | 9/23/2008, 2:57 pm EST

WANDA JACKSON!!!!!!!!!!!! IT’S ABOUT TIME!!!!!!! YAY!

It will indeed be a travesty if the first woman to ever record rock ‘n’ roll doesn’t get inducted. … While she’s still living and performing. NOW IS THE TIME!!!

Anonymous | 9/23/2008, 2:47 pm EST

i feel bad for the intern that has to file all these comments.

Rockitcat | 9/23/2008, 2:15 pm EST

For the love of God will you induct Cheap Trick already! They’ve been eligible since 2002! What more does this band have to do to prove that they’re worthy?

John Jay | 9/23/2008, 2:06 pm EST

Agreed:
RINGO!!

John Jay | 9/23/2008, 2:05 pm EST

Agreed:
RINGO!!

Dean | 9/23/2008, 2:00 pm EST

If I’m correct, Nariah Carey hasn’t passed the Beatles yet. And while I appreciate her great talent and with her being nice to look at, she doesn’t deserve to be said in the same breath as The Beatles. It should never have been called the Rock andf Roll Hall Of Fame. Maybe the Pop/Rock Music Hall Of Fame. No Stevie Ray, no Ringo but we have the Stooges (I prefer Moe, Larry and Curley) and Little Anthony?!
Make mine a double…
D

Rick | 9/23/2008, 1:51 pm EST

What about RINGO STARR?! What’s the criteria to get in, record sales? If that’s the case, Ringo on his own has sold more records than half the hall! Aside from being one of the most influential rock drummers of all time and being part of the greatest show on earth, it’s a disgrace that he’s not in. Oh yeh, I guess War, Womack and Chic took up all the room. WTF????!!!!

sally | 9/23/2008, 1:30 pm EST

Cheap Trick should have been inducted long ago. I’ve never heard a good reason why they are not. I have no use for the R&RHofF and won’t be busting my ass to get to Cleveland any time soon.

h2ofield | 9/23/2008, 9:02 am EST

Cheap Trick should be in the hall.

SRVblues | 9/23/2008, 7:57 am EST

The fact that Stevie Ray Vaughan isn’t even nominated is an absolute travesty. He was without doubt one of the top blues/rock musicians of the last 50 years. He should have been elected the minute he was eligible. A clear example of why popular music is so screwed up these days.

Dean Wien | 9/23/2008, 7:42 am EST

And…With the 40th Anniversary of the original 1969 “WOODSTOCK”, a special Rock & Roll Hall of Fame award should be given to all the musicians involved, and to the people that put it together. I also recommend to everyone that reads Rolling Stone Magazine to visit The Woodstock Museum in Bethel, N.Y. They truly managed to capture the era and the Woodstock event. They also built a great musiv venue on the property, and purposely they didn’t build anything on the property where the actual stage was. It’s as if it’s sacred ground. It will be interesting to see what will be done to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of “Woodstock”.

Dean Wien | 9/23/2008, 7:32 am EST

Everyone’s choices are all valid and great, but the most overlooked are Beatle “Ringo Starr”. He had more solo hits than the rest of The Beatles, and he was the drummer of The Beatles, and another Apple Records band “BADFINGER”. This band went through a lot of bad times, but still managed to knock out such hits as “Come & Get it”, “No Matter What”, “Day After Day”, “Baby Blue”, and the song that Harry Nilsson and Mariah Carey covered “Without You”. Hey…What about Harry Nilsson?

yehaa | 9/23/2008, 6:59 am EST

METALLICA!!

Roger | 9/23/2008, 2:40 am EST

Wait a minute.. don’t you have to play rock-n-roll in order to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

No, you don’t. I’d have to say about 40 to 50% of the inductees in the Rock Hall are not truly Rock acts. Look at all the R&B (including many Motown acts), Blues, Country and other types of music in there.

The Rock Hall really salutes the music of the last 50+ years, not just Rock.

Bopgun | 9/23/2008, 1:24 am EST

And the Hall of Fame itself is beautiful - Janis’ hand painted car hanging from the rafters, Elmore James’ beautifully banged up National guitar, Hank Williams white emboidered suit, Jimi’s childhood drawings, Mr. Rottens handwritten lyrics for God Save the Queen,Becks ‘64 Fender Esquire, Johnny Thunders Les Paul, Paul Simonon’s bass he’s breaking on the cover of London Calling, Jimi’s hat with scarf, Roy Orbison’s glasses…and on and on. And the building is a perfect glass design by I.M Pei, overlooking the water, it’s magnificent. And again it’s a Popular music hall, blues, country, R&B. You saying Otis Redding, Hank Williams, Muddy Waters, and Robert Johnson shouldn’t be in there ? Pleeeeze..

Bopgun | 9/23/2008, 1:08 am EST

Oh crap, the yearly Rush and Kiss fan whining is here. As always - Rush is officially The Worst Band of All Time, drum solos, prog rock, pseudo-intellectual lyrics, that guy with the super mullet yodeling like a dying cat to top it all off. And sales and longevity don’t equal quality, Mariah Carey has more #1’s than the Beatles or Elvis, Barry Manilow has warbled for 35 years, Celine Dion, shall I go on ??? And again it’s a hall of fame for “Popular Music”, i.e. non classical and jazz. RUN DMC is an easy choice, they rocked like mutha’s in the synthesizer 80’s. Iggy should have been in on the first ballot. Beck should be in. The rest our close calls, except for Metallica, metal is a silly joke,a notch below Yodeling and Prog rock in music quality. And Deep Purple ? Yes ? Lot’s of old burnouts out there blogging.

all that is fair | 9/22/2008, 11:24 pm EST

INDUCT RUSH YOU EH-HOLES!

afishlips | 9/22/2008, 10:23 pm EST

stooges, deep purple, bobby womack, wanda jackson, metallica, jeff beck, run dmc, but isnt there a hip hop hall of fame? I’m just sayin if there was they wouldnt have any rock acts in there.

Brien Comerford | 9/22/2008, 8:44 pm EST

A Jeff Beck induction is imperative because he’s the world’s greatest living guitarist. Jeff Beck’s revered by Page, Clapton, Gilmour, May, Iommi, Vai, Satriani, Scholz and Slash. He’s also an animal loving vegetarian, a hot rod fanatic and a British guitar God.

THE DORF | 9/22/2008, 8:43 pm EST

I for one will NEVER EVER visit the RNRHOF. It’s nothing but corporate BS run by a bunch of Gordon Gekko types who just wanna make a buck. They don’t deserve great bands like Rush, The Coop, AC/DC, Kiss, etc.

Chris | 9/22/2008, 8:42 pm EST

Seriously, SRV should be number 1 on this list this year. then Bon Jovi number 2. Rush shouldn’t even get recognized.

tk | 9/22/2008, 7:59 pm EST

come on induct the monkees!!!!!!

Anonymous | 9/22/2008, 7:51 pm EST

Rush may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but 35 years of sellout concerts and gold records, and a rabidly faithful fan base, almost no airplay, surviving trends of punk, hair metal, disco, bad 80’s brit pop, etc., personal tragedies, and the 3 of them are still going strong. Give credit where credit is due.

SRVFan | 9/22/2008, 7:28 pm EST

I was actually thinking of watching the awards this year..believing Stevie Ray Vaughan would be elected easily. You’re kidding right? Vaughan is one of the premier blues-rock musicians of the last 50 years..he doesn’t even get nominated? No wonder popular music is so screwed up.

R&R isn't R&R anymore! | 9/22/2008, 7:12 pm EST

How did Run DMC get in? I like hip-hop, but DMC should not get in before SRV, Steve Miller, Skynrd, ELO, Jeff Beck or any solo Beatle. Is this a politically correct move? If so, I’de prefer War and/or Tupac or Biggie over DMC!

Mike S | 9/22/2008, 7:09 pm EST

people, AC/DC is in the Rock Hall of Fame. They came in same year as the Police did back in 04 or 05.

somerled73 | 9/22/2008, 6:41 pm EST

New York Dolls
Iggy and the Stooges
Roxy Music
King Crimson
Kiss
AD/DC
Rush
Tom Waits
SRV
Iron Maiden
Joy Division
The Cure
Metallica

So many bands that deserve this. Hard to take it seriously with Madonna over Iggy last year. And RunDMC is not Rock&Roll.

Johhny Lydon was on the right path when he told the RARHOF to “fuck off”.

Another vote for Rush-they rock harder than many bands already inducted. R&R Hall of Shame strikes again. Typical big ego exec-has no clue as to what talent is and what ROCK really is. Kiss, Genesis, Yes-the list could go on for deserving bands. If I ever get to Cleveland, I’ll use their building as a urnal!

voice of reason | 9/22/2008, 4:56 pm EST

Don’t knock metallica, DMC, stooges or wanda jackson. Chic are not deserving. I could see Rush, the cure, tom waits, Maiden, Yes, and definitely AC/DC. This also means Slayer is coming around the bend. On and On south of heaven.

A guy | 9/22/2008, 4:47 pm EST

Run-DMC in the “Rock and Roll” Hall of Fame. Something about this is odd. You know just a little.

basser | 9/22/2008, 4:16 pm EST

The Hall of Fame blows.

Metallica and RUN DMC are eligible on the ballot before Rush, Roxy Music, Yes, King Crimson, Pete Townshend solo, Mott the Hoople, Free, Jethro Tull and Deep Purple? It’s so wrong. What a bloated, richy-rich country club sham. Boo on the Hall of Fame.

JP | 9/22/2008, 4:13 pm EST

Come on now… KISS, Genesis, Def Leppard and Judas Priest have all received VH1’s Rock Honors… Metallica are MTv Icons… What more do you people want?!?

Seriously though, the fact that Yes, Rush, Genesis (at least the incarnation with Peter Gabriel) and more importantly DEEP PURPLE haven’t been inducted is a travesty… Sure the whole Prog thing hasn’t been in vogue for a couple of decades now, but the body of work (not mention depth and breadth of styles and talent) should be celebrated… Same with Deep Purple… They produced an iconic body of work and Ritchie Blackmore himself is probably responsible for launching the careers of tens of thousands of guitarists (who hasn’t learned the intro to “Smoke on the Water” when first picking up the instrument?)… Besides, I’d like to see the Purps reunite for the ceremony, just to find out if Ritchie still has the pilgrim hat… :)

Lala | 9/22/2008, 3:53 pm EST

It will be another travesty if Wanda Jackson is not FINALLY inducted!

CapeCodder | 9/22/2008, 3:53 pm EST

Honestly, The Stooges before Rush and Stevie Ray Vaughn???!!!! Hall of Shame just keeps getting worse. Next you’ll see Britney Spears and Berlin in there before any of the actual talented bands. Now, I like the Stooges, but they’re not deserving before Rush and SRV.

Charley | 9/22/2008, 3:50 pm EST

Where are RONSTADT - YES - MOODY BLUES -TOM WAITS - WARREN ZEVON -

Anyone that says Billy Joel and James Taylor are more important to the history of Rock and Roll than Black Sabbath and KISS are deserves a beatdown.

Ace Rules. | 9/22/2008, 3:20 pm EST

The fact that Alice Cooper, Kiss and Deep Purple are constantly being ignored by the glorified Hard Rock Cafe is inexcuseable. They’ve refused to acknowledge the massive influence these bands have had, while inducting bands that have cited them as direct influences. Makes no sense.

Poncho | 9/22/2008, 2:57 pm EST

When is Britney Spears going to be inducted? Such great talent there.

null | 9/22/2008, 2:44 pm EST

Uh, I think AC/DC got in a couple years ago. KISS and the Stooges are long overdue. Joy Division needs to be nominated too.

daniel | 9/22/2008, 12:49 pm EST

Yes, what about Rush. Rush deserves to be in. As do quite a lot of the bands and artists mentioned in the comments. The Hall of Fame really needs to get its act together.

Tom Waits is long overdue….i think Metallica wasn’t first ballot because at this point last year no on knew if they could even coexist at an induction ceremony and the RRHOF probably didn’t want another Van Halen situation…either way Metallica is way deserving of this…

the kiss army | 9/22/2008, 12:05 pm EST

It is unfathomable that Kiss has not been inducted yet. No one with a straight face can say that Chic rocks more than Kiss.

sara | 9/22/2008, 12:01 pm EST

Well, hm. Run-DMC is a no-brainer. Chic SHOULD be a no-brainer (although where the hell is Donna Summer?). I’m not the world’s biggest Metallica fan, but they belong. I’m just curious: Is ’80s indie rock ever gonna get its due? Or will the voters continue to treat Husker Du, the Replacements, et al as irrelevant? And how are they going to explain that decision when Nirvana becomes eligible?

To mike in ky | 9/22/2008, 11:59 am EST

Iggy and the Stooges belong. Iggy’s solo work, just for releasing the awful “Candy” with that B-52’s crotch, does not. HAHAHA

glennh | 9/22/2008, 11:40 am EST

Deep Purple not even being nominated yet is ridiculous!! So many artists have cited them as influences and they are true icons.

Uh, how exactly were Metallica not a first ballot hall-of-famer?!? That’s like making Cal Ripken or Mickey Mantle wait a year.

Richard | 9/22/2008, 11:15 am EST

Metallica
Run DMC
Stooges
Chic
Jeff Beck

That’s it.

Jennifer | 9/22/2008, 10:56 am EST

WANDA JACKSON!!!!!!!!!!!! IT’S ABOUT TIME!!!!!!! YAY!

KISS | 9/22/2008, 10:45 am EST

Get KISS & RUSH!

Peter | 9/22/2008, 10:45 am EST

What about the Cure… They influenced many people out there.

Adam | 9/22/2008, 10:26 am EST

Captain Jack is correct. No Tom Waits, no credibility for the RRHOF. It’s a travesty that he isn’t in.

brent | 9/22/2008, 10:22 am EST

metallica should’ve gone in last year, but better late than never. iggy and the stooges, jeff beck, and run-dmc are great choices. motley crue deserves induction, where are they?

Stevesies | 9/22/2008, 10:10 am EST

Chic, Wanda Jackson and War but no ELO?

captain jack | 9/22/2008, 10:09 am EST

Until Tom Waits is inducted, the whole thing is a sham.

JD | 9/22/2008, 10:06 am EST

The Rock Hall is more about who’s not inducted than who’s inducted.

mikeky | 9/22/2008, 10:00 am EST

if the stooges don’t go in this time, i give up on the hall of fame. for God’s sake. iggy pop should be in there TWICE: once with the stooges and once for his solo work. HALL OF FAME–GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER AND VOTE IGGY AND THE STOOGES IN. PULL YOUR HEADS OUT OF YOUR ASSES.

reasonformadness | 9/22/2008, 9:52 am EST

what about Rush, come on!
