Jimmy Buffett Plays Paris Shows: “I’m Getting Back to My Roots”

Over the weekend, Jimmy Buffett helped kick off fashion week in Paris by bringing the Parrothead nation — decked out in grass skirts, coconut bras, Hawaiian shirts and goofy homemade hats — to the city of lights for two shows at the legendary New Morning jazz club. Loyal fans flew in from all over the world for the pair of intimate gigs that reminded Buffett of the “days when this was as large a crowd as we would see.”

Buffett first came to Paris 34 years ago, at the behest of some friends in Key West, Florida, that were working on a film with a French production team. “Paris had been on my song line since I was a kid reading Fitzgerald, Gertrud Stein and Hemingway — I just had to figure out a way to get there,” he says. The movie needed a soundtrack and Buffett wound up spending the summer living in a castle an hour outside of Paris, “learning the language and the bohemian lifestyle.” He has been coming back regularly ever since.

The two shows this weekend each had a feel of its own as Buffett and the Coral Reefers worked through diverse set lists that drew from his entire catalog and covers that included the Grateful Dead’s “Scarlet Begonias” and Bob Dylan’s “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35.” While the Parrotheads reveled in hearing apropos cuts such as “Coast of Marseilles” and “Frenchman for the Night,” it was the classics “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” “Fins,” “Volcano” and “Margaritaville” that rocked the New Morning. Throughout the shows Buffett bantered with the delegations that had trekked in from New Zealand, Italy, Brazil, Norway and even Abu Dhabi. “I’m just getting back to my roots as a troubadour and bar singer,” Buffett says of the experience.

Answering the chants for “one more song,” Buffett concluded both nights much the same way his career began — onstage by himself, in a small club, playing a great ballad. It was the moment the faithful had waited for all evening. The magic of Buffett is that in five minutes he can transport a crowd back to a 1960s Bourbon Street bar or the Quiet Knight in Chicago where he found the inspiration for his final song, “He Went to Paris.” Buffett promised the Paris shows would become an annual engagement and also said to expect more interesting gigs in 2009. He returns to the U.S. on October 16th in San Diego, California, for a four-show mini West Coast tour.

Meet The Phlockers!

Have you met the Phlockers yet? www.meetthephlockers is a new web site that has emerged and has created quite the feeding frenzy, as new members “phlock” to the site in record numbers!. On March 1, 2008 Bill and Trace (APHC members) launched this one of a kind social network for “people living and loving life in a tropical state of mind”.

The best way to describe the web site is that it’s like a ‘my-space’ but just for Parrot Heads and tropical-minded people. In no time at all, Meet The Phlockers (MTP) has grown from an idea that Bill and Trace had to a huge website that is alive and thriving. The site has added over 6,300 members in less than 6 months! MTP was created as an alternative to the larger social networks out there because Bill and Trace wanted a home for their friends where they could socialize without “getting lost in the crowd” or overwhelmed by endless advertising and spam! Best of all MTP is free for members.

Members of the site enjoy creating their very own profile page, where they can upload pictures, videos, music and write and publish their own blog! Members can also choose to join any number of groups of the site, such as: Motorcycling Parrotheads, Fins Up Singles, Back Yard Tiki Bar Owners, and a Food and Drink Club, just to name a few. The site also has a very interactive events calendar where you are sure to find a huge calendar of trop rock, and Parrot Head events all over the USA! One of the favorite features of MTP members, is the live chat room. Where almost any hour of the day or night you can chat live with like-minded Phlockers, make new friends or run into someone you met ages ago at a Buffett show!

When you visit MTP, be sure to listen to Phlocker Radio while you are there. Bill and Trace host a podcast called ” The Just Phlockin Around” show! This light-hearted show is recorded from various locations all around Atlanta. Bill and Trace record the show on location, often from an A1A show or other live music performance. They have interviewed artists such as Jeff Pike, The Parrot Island Band, and Nadirah Shakoor!

Some of the members have affectionately called MTP “A non-stop virtual tailgate party!”
So next time you are at your computer, why not log on, create your own profile page, make some new friends and reconnect with old friends!
But be warned …..MTP can be addictive and may lead to late nights, more friends and a better social life!

We were at the New Morning Club for both nights and had a fantastic time, JImmy and The Coral Reefers had the crowd rocking from begining to end and his solo performance was great (A great venue)

I wish I could have attended this wonderful show. What an event! Too bad the true culture of a Jimmy Buffett concert is an acquired taste, not appreciated by all. Some of us, which remain anonymous, are too caught up in their self-important fantasies to accept warm summer breezes and french wines and cheeses as something to look forward to in life. Alas, it takes a Parrothead to understand that too much of a good thing is……a very good thing.

Maurice "Mouse" Brine | 9/26/2008, 1:08 am EST

My buddy “Julio” and I flew from Canada to see both shows in Paris, and we’ve seen him a great many times in the USA as well as the few times he’s been in Canada, and let me tell you, we had a conversation about Nova Scotia (Son a Sailor) and Zachary Richard, Jimmy really knows his roots!!!

Also met some great American fans and truly friends for life.

This was such an amazing experience! We’ve been to other shows and had great times, but these two shows were just incredible. Super good energy in the crowd, and the band looked like they were having a great time too! We met so many wonderful people (including the monkey)– any experience is what you make of it, and this one ROCKED! Thanks Jimmy and the band! See you next year!

I was at Saturday nights gig in Paris having flown in with my wife from Dublin. With all the shit that goes on in the world these days let me just say that this was an ocassion that would restore one’s faith in humanity.Nuff said.

Joan Morales and Family | 9/24/2008, 1:10 pm EST

I have been to many of Jimmy’s concerts but this one rocked the house! It was a WOW night from the tailgate party on the streets of Paris to the very end. I was able to get a autograph from Jimmy and had him sign our poster. Paris has been added to our list.

J.C. Simon | 9/24/2008, 10:56 am EST

Though they may go about it in different ways, any artist who gets paid for what they do is an entertainer - and I can’t think of a better one than Buffett. Music doesn’t have to be all angst and revolution, and there’s room for everything beneath the sun and stars. If I want to feel like my girlfriend left me, I lost my job, and my cat got run over, I’ll listen to Nine Inch Nails; if I want to feel like I’m sunning myself in a tropical paradise, I’ll listen to Jimmy Buffett.

Peter - Holland | 9/23/2008, 5:49 pm EST

Been there, seen it, bought my t-shirt and had an absolutely wonderful time. Thank you Jimmy and the band for traveling all the way to Paris. BUT, the monkey gotta go !

stupid Kathryn Chamberlain | 9/23/2008, 12:42 pm EST

,,,,,no one forced you to read negative comments. RS posts (most of the time) many different oppinions, not just the dumb-ass Jimmey Buff-it crowd.

i love the songs

George , Norwich, England | 9/23/2008, 11:35 am EST

He went to Paris and so did we!! (Me and the Wife, Pamela)
Saturday night was one of the best nights ever.
Buffett holds a crowd as only the likes of Robbie Williams can. JB is a true master, who performs live without gimmicks and tapes. Raw talent with the Coral Reefers behind him equals the perfect package.
Anonymous should stay that way and go back home to look for his/her life. The reference to fashion week is called humor.

To see so many people , from so many age groups, from so many backgrounds, from so many parts of this world, make me certain I am on the correct planet. ‘Anonymous’ people live in another galaxy, one without fun and friendship.
Fins up to all Parrotheads

Paris 2009 is in the diary.

Kathryn Chamberlain | 9/23/2008, 10:45 am EST

I was at the first Paris Show and being from England it was my chance to see him and meet him. he was great! To all those who don’t like Jimmy Buffett no one forces you to read the article. Rolling Stone covers all taste of Music

stupid jimmy buff-it | 9/23/2008, 10:19 am EST

I rarely agree with Anonymous, but this time he is dead on. Jimmy Buff-it sucks ass. Stupid.

LLPH | 9/23/2008, 7:37 am EST

About time JB gets some of the recognition he deserves. Talk about a living legend!

Anonymous | 9/22/2008, 10:36 pm EST

RS should not even acknowledging this crass marketeer and folk hero to vacationing drunken date rapists everywhere. blech! stop it! ick! why is he even at fashion week! ahhhhhhhhhh!

Dominic Wells | 9/22/2008, 9:34 pm EST

Great set lists. I love Buffett. I’m not a big fan of his recent more country sound, but all of his stuff from the 70’s through the 90’s is amazing.
