New Journey Singer’s Dream Turns Ugly

9/19/08, 3:19 pm EST

When Journey guitarist Neal Schon found singer Arnel Pineda on YouTube and hired him to be the band’s new singer, it sounded like something out of a 21st century fairy tale. But it’s been anything but a happy ending for Pineda, as the grind of a successful world tour is getting to him. “There are days I just break down and cry,” says Pineda. “This is a job I’m doing for my family. That’s all the consolation I’m getting.” Click below for more on Pineda’s story, including a bonus interview where he talks about the audition process and what Journey’s songs mean to him.

the fact that someone can win to lead sing in the band about sums up how important these guys are.

With all the $$$ the band is grossing at the expense of “using” Arnel Pineda – Journey should be able to pay rooming and bring his girlfriend a& baby along. It’s only fair. I’ve read nasty things in highly credible/reputable publications about how Neal Schon treats other musicians – namely Steve Perry – just to hit the road and make some dough. I also hope they are paying Mr. Pineda a handsome sum of $$$ for every show, because without him, Journey is NOTHING! There are Steve Perry interviews online about how indifferent, insensitive, inconsiderate and inhuman Neal Schon was to him when he became ill, his Mom passed and there was nothing pending with the band during the times, other than Schon wanted to make another album or rake in a $$$tour$$$. Steve deserved some time off! Just reading that Schon pushed Pineda and ordered him to “Just sing for us, just sing.” turns my stomach. Pineda is touring in an alien world where he knows nobody and has no friends other than the hypocrites in the band for the moment. I watched the CBS Sunday Morning segment the sunday of the week “Revelation” was issued, and Pineda’s story was heartwarming. The album is great, I got it! ARNEL PINEDA is an impressive talent, and Journey should be extremely grateful the man dared to step up to the plate and attempt to win over Steve Perry’s legions of fans, which is NOT an easy job. I wish Arnel the ultimate best and that Journey is simply a stepping stone to bigger and better things ahead in his career, as he already was a musician celebrity in his homeland.

b/t/w Lazymoon13 – Arnel Pineda did not “win” any contest to sing for Journey. Mr. Pineda has been an accomplished MUSICIAN most of his life. Neal Schon actively courted Arnel after going on a you.tube.com search to locate a new lead singer. Arnel and his band had coincidently covered a Journey tune or two at one of their shows and it was posted on the site. Mr. Pineda has had a very successful career as a musician in his homeland, and throughout Asia for 25 years, prior to this event. Look him up on Google.com, if you missed the CBS Sunday Morning Show feature on him & Journey.

Neil Schon.... | 9/20/2008, 4:39 pm EST

…makes Eddie Van Halen look like Mr. Rogers. If you can piss off Carlos Santana, then you have jerk ingrained in you. Neil should just go back to touring with Jan Hammer. Arnel Pineda definitely gives the impression that the Journey corporate machine is wearing him down.

it is a shocking revelation on the band Journey that is making waves through out the world but does not feel compassion on the person who sings out his heart. Am sorry for the bands greatness where its always a dog eat dog world out there….goodluck !!!!!!!

Arnel, Ignore all the negative comments about you. It will ruin your life. Other people likes to ruin other people’s life. They are very unhappy!!!!!!!! They need to look at themselves in the mirror before judging others. How sad, ugly, disturb human beings we have in this world. They don’t have tallent. I hope they will pay you a lot of $$$. Do your best, make a lot of money and retire early. Be carefull signing contracts, read the fine lines, and know the laws. Good luck!!!!!!!

excellent job doing what nobody else could do to replace Steve Perry, Arnel Pineda. You have a beautiful voice. Saw you in Raleigh NC last fall and was one of the most incredible concerts I have ever seen, Hope you have better times for the money you SHOULD be making but remember money is not everything

Ian | 5/27/2009, 9:24 pm EST

Steve Perry is old and fat. He is the past. Arnel is the future of Journey.

OHDOEDE | 8/19/2009, 1:05 am EST

I DO LIKE THE NEW SINGER, BUT STEVE PERRY WILL ALWAYS RULE. BEST OF LUCK TO ARNEL AND HIS FAMILY. DON’T PUT UP WITH ANY B.S FROM MR. SCHON, ISN’T THAT WHY STEVE LEFT THE BAND TOO BECAUSE IT COST HIM HIS LADY (SHERRIE). DON’T LET THAT HAPPEN TO YOU. KEEP UP THE GREAT JOB AND NEIL WHY DON’T YOU GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE TO MR. ANREL AND STEVE PERRY, CAUSE WITHOUT EITHER OF THEM JOURNEY WAS NOTHING.

Neal Schon JERK ALERT | 9/23/2009, 8:06 am EST

Arnel, just another nice guy being used by the Schon accountants. good voice, high energy but no matter what= he’s not SP. Just saw Journey in FL, Neal wanted to hook up and was lying to his wife whole time, jerk jerk jerk. He’s old and gross. 5 kids, 4 wives= get with the program folks, this guy lacks integrity
