Jimmy Page, Jack White, The Edge Come Together For Guitar Documentary

9/18/08, 11:37 am EST

One of the bigger breakout hits of the Toronto Film Festival was It Might Get Loud, a documentary that consists entirely of Jimmy Page, Jack White and The Edge swapping stories, expounding on their experiences and of course jamming with each other. The film, directed by An Inconvenient Truth helmer Davis Guggenheim, will satisfy casual fans as well as hardcore guitar afficianados. “It’s almost like having three carpenters talk about a radial-arm saw,” explains White. “It’s great to use this mechanical device to learn all about these other ideas that surround it.” Click below for more on It Might Get Loud, including what songs the trio played when the cameras rolled.

What a legend Jimmy Page is, I’m not so sure about the other two guys. You know, U2 is not exactly famous for their guitar work.

Shayak | 3/19/2009, 10:57 am EST

@Leon – yea I dunno what edge is doing there…but jack definitely can be mentioned in the same breath as page

pope | 4/7/2009, 5:35 pm EST

yeah but the edge is most unique guitar player in the last 20 years.

fgg | 4/21/2009, 5:56 pm EST

What?? U2 IS famous for their guitar work.. You can tell immediately if a song belongs to U2, just from listening to the guitar.. These men are all 3 living legends..

Mari | 5/27/2009, 11:11 pm EST

JIMMY PAGE is a genius, he´s magical!!!!
He is the best guitar player ever!!! And He is the most handsome man in this world.
I love him.

In my opinion, Jack White shouldnt be there. I mean, he’s not that good. The Edge deserves to, but jack white’s a little overrated.

your opinion doesn’t matter. Jack White is a very talented musician that isn’t afraid to take risks and put out music that doesn’t sound like the typical top 40 nonsense. So…. who the hell are you to judge him?

steve | 7/6/2009, 5:33 pm EST

I think all three are pretty genius, but maybe they should have thrown in a metal guitarist to balance it out…dimebag if he was still alive, or even eddie van halen..just my opinion though

vallartabikesinfo@hotmail.com | 7/11/2009, 1:36 pm EST

How can you tell Jack is not good…!
You probably dont know anything about him..!

Eee, Jack White is not enough? The Edge is not enough?? Have you lost your mind or something?! Go listen to their music, then write such a bullshits!! Jimmy is a God, but if you know how Jack plays guitar, you see that he plays a lot of sounds like Page. I love them. And The Edge’s guitar is one of the reasons, of which you can recognize a U2 song, including Bono’s voice. Listen, then write. ;]

Hudman | 8/1/2009, 1:15 pm EST

Jimmy Page IS a guitar God, no disputing that…The Edge and Jack White are included in this documentary (It Might Get Loud)to address different genres, styles and approaches to playing the guitar……To say either The Edge or Jack White are even close to being among the great guitar players of today is ludicrous…Have you ever heard of Eddie Van Halen? Eric Clapton? Joe Satriani? The list goes on and on…The Edge plays guitar in a great band, and Jack White has to put a LOT more skins on the wall to join that list…..Both should and DO look in awe when Mr. Page straps on the axe.

This film looks like a guitarists dream cme true. Dave Gilmour would of been another good addition. Re: Jack W. just listen to the solo in ‘Ball in a Biscuit’ and tell me Jack White isn’t as good a guitarist as Jimmy Page was. JW dragged the blues back into the mainstream kicking and howling. His sounds made me pick up the guitar again after 10 years.

Ask Jimmy Page if he belongs there, – I think you already know the answer.

hoerwa | 8/9/2009, 2:19 pm EST

hey hudman,
sounds like you got stuck in the seventies (clapton, van halen).
Jack White is a hell of a guitar player and songwriter. I’ve seen him with white stripes and raconteurs, and seeing the man perform live, is a unique experience. so, get out of your rocking chair, grandpa and go see a concert or two…

Guitarist | 8/17/2009, 6:48 pm EST

To me its pretty simple. Imagine for a second that Jack White was not the singer of the White Stripes, etc., but just the guitarist. Would he still be included in this movie? Definitely not. Jack White is an awesome frontman and he has ridiculous amounts of rock star charisma, but he has no more right to be in this movie than Billy Corgan or any other great guitar-playing frontman. When you talk about people who literally changed the sound of the guitar, you talk about Page, Hendrix, the Edge, Van Halen, Tom Morello, Duane Allman, etc. White just doesn’t make the grade. The big problem for the director is finding someone who does notably make “the grade” who’s become popular in the last 10 years. There just aren’t that many guys out there right now.

maddmatty | 8/18/2009, 11:28 am EST

The movie does it’s best to portray all three artists to the best of who they are, I get it. Page DID change the game in the way of how things were recorded and more. The Edge is the most sincere as far as I am concerned. And his desire for tinkering(which all three did)was/is key to U2’s sound.
Jack White, what can I say? He discoverd electricity and got REAL crazy! LOL! A nice film overall that should inspire guitar players and musicians for some time.

helloyou | 8/20/2009, 12:42 am EST

Nels Cline kills it. Not much stage presence.

Dakota | 8/27/2009, 12:04 pm EST

wow, Jack White overrated? the Edge or U2 not innovating guitar work? somebody really hasn’t been listening, I guess some kidz have to listen to the same song for 40 years before they GET IT!

Jasper | 8/29/2009, 3:58 pm EST

jack white simply OVERRATED,and there are deserving musicians out there

Anonymous | 9/2/2009, 9:30 am EST

There could be any number of amazing guitarists. The combination could consist of totally different guitarists….
Pete Townsend, Joe Perry, Joe Satriani, Eddie Van Halen, etc. I say watch the movie first, then comment on who should be in it. :D

TonyM | 9/4/2009, 7:23 pm EST

I’ll watch the movie. But I would not have minded it if Pat methany or John Mclaughlin (a real guitar god) had been included

Funny stuff | 10/23/2009, 4:00 pm EST

There are some good points in here about other guitarists. I think the director was trying to give you an example of 3 different generations. IMO Jack White is prolly the best choice. He’s obviously a Page Light at best but he’s still talented. The Edge is a humble guitar god. Page is a legend.

erlo | 11/7/2009, 10:35 pm EST

they are all great guitar players with their own style of music….jimmy has that classic rock bluesy rock n roll sound we all love and try to mimmic for ages…the edge is just as talented in making crazy awesome delay effects and being original to his form of playing and jack white has a raw sence of misdirection that makes his technique different and new.
in my opinion they all deserve to be in this movie.

Schulie | 11/13/2009, 4:18 am EST

Jimmy Page: One of the most important guitarists/musicians of 20th Century? Yes/Yes.
Jack White: One of the most important guitarists/musicians of 20th Century? Maybe/Yes.
The Edge: One of the most important guitarists/musicians of 20th Century? No/…uh, no.
