Paul McCartney on Israel Show: “Music Can Help People Calm Down”

9/17/08, 4:27 pm EST

“Me and the band are really looking forward to this one,” Paul McCartney says of his upcoming Tel Aviv concert, taking place 43 years after Israel banned the Beatles from performing there. “It’s the first time I have ever been to Israel, or really that part of the world so I am very interested to look around and look at the situation, just personally. I am going to be interested as a tourist just to look around and meet the people.” Despite outcry and even some threats from Palestinian groups, Macca promises the show will go on. Tel Aviv’s “Friendship First” concert — as McCartney dubbed previous first-ever shows in Quebec and Kiev — specifically is about music and promoting friendship. “Music can help people to just calm them down. I also think it can be very interesting for change,” McCartney says. “I always cite a John (Lennon) song ‘Give Peace A Chance’; if you watch the footage from back then, about a million people outside the White House chanting that song to Nixon inside the White House, I think that had an effect.” As for what Macca has in store for his first Israel show, “We’ve been rehearsing some songs we’ve not done for a while but that’s all I’ll tell you.” McCartney and band will take the stage September 25th at Tel Aviv’s Hayarkon Park.

those who are anti you miss the point .mccartney came he played to an audience and i was there who when he sang “give peace a chance “believe in giving peace a chance the only problem you need 2 sides to tango . The Hamas dont want a comprimise they want it all .thats not gonna work for no-one

theres no PALESTINE yet by the way.
when they will stop all the terror maybe they will have a country.
i dont understand why when artist come to israel to perform he naturaly need to come to perform in gaza or other palastine area.

BEATLE LVR Mickie | 9/24/2008, 6:50 pm EST

i rute mccartney on! Peace&Love! I hope he does a us tour soon…^.^
Jughead, Paul can do just as much as the jo-bros can do.

he isnt doing a concert in “palestine” because Hamas is a terror organization that would probably not go for a rock and roll concert with a message of peace.

Remembering it as a horrible event is one thing. Using it to bully your way over other people and promote an agenda of Zionism and the idea that your are “chosen” over any other people because of the suffering they have been through is a hollow, empty, cause. Point blank: playing in “Israel” now is like playing in South Africa 20 years ago. But im sure the black Africans there were “terrorists” too.

Calling the holocaust a hollow cause is very insensitive brother. Sounds like anti-semitism to me.

The New Math | 9/19/2008, 12:56 pm EST

Any government that oppresses its people is wrong. Muslim, Jew, Christian…..Saudi Arabia gets tons of money and support from the U.S., so does Syria…..I’m not an anti-Semite, I’m anti-imperialist. No country gets more military funding from the U.S. than Israel, and it sure ain’t because they are “oppressed”.

New Math, Voice of Treason.
Why not criticize all the Muslim Fascist Theocracies? Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iran, ect… No let’s pick on Israel who are stuck in the middle of those wacko governments. Have you been the middle east? Silly Bunnies - Anti-semitism is for kids.

Never mind Paul McCartney playing for the Palestinians. I say the Jonas Brothers should go out there and play for them. They’ll bring peace to all the lands out there.

Hahaha!!! | 9/18/2008, 11:31 am EST

….if the Palestinians could organize a large scale event of ANY kind without having to run it by their U.S. backed occupiers first, then yes, im sure it would happen! Good point about the African slave trade; if the Holocaust drove U.S. and Britain to create Israel and support them unquestioningly for 60 years, then what do they owe Africa for stealing and murdering generations of slaves?

ryu | 9/18/2008, 10:48 am EST

NO, i want peace for Palestinians.

tony | 9/18/2008, 1:03 am EST

h. bomb, it’s because they’d bomb him there and he bloody well knows it.

andrew | 9/17/2008, 9:29 pm EST

paul’s gotta tour the u.s.
when will this happen?

rankin' rob | 9/17/2008, 9:01 pm EST

anti-semites. I’m sure if the Palistinian’s could actually organize a large scale peaceful public event someone would play it, wouldn’t they?

Good yontiff Paul. I hope it’s a good set and you bust out a Lennon classic for the good people of Israel.

The New Math | 9/17/2008, 8:43 pm EST

6 million Jews= “Holocaust” (Hollow Cause)

400 million Africans on the Middle Passage=No big deal

Rock Singer | 9/17/2008, 8:33 pm EST

Hey, Maybe he’ll do that childish song he wrote right after 911… “Freedom” yeah that will help.

H. Bomb | 9/17/2008, 6:05 pm EST

Why isn’t he also doing a concert in PALESTINE?
