Thank you I was hoping these guys would be put on the cover.

Oh okay, I get it now. I was wondering why the Metallica album got 4 stars from Rolling Stones. It’s because they were gonna appear on the RS cover! Where other publications are giving the new Metallica average/decent reviews, RS is going out of the way to kiss their ass on this new album. I should’ve known they were getting the cover story.

the dude | 9/17/2008, 12:31 pm EST

Actually, most of the reviews for this album have been exceptional — the Rolling Stone review was one of the more balanced.

Best metal album since 1988. Great musicianship, great songs, great vocals, etc. Perfect

Anonymous | 9/17/2008, 4:41 pm EST

Metallica is our generations Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. The best band to me in the history of music.

Judas Kiss, All Nightmare Long and Broken Beat and Scarred are three of their best songs ever. It is amazing to think they are 45+ and still playing thrash.

Finally!!! | 9/17/2008, 5:17 pm EST

You put an act worthy of the cover on. Thanks. I started to lose hope once I saw the Jonas Brothers and the Hills loosers on there.

Gunther | 9/17/2008, 6:22 pm EST

Yet another lame Rolling Stone video.

Thank You | 9/17/2008, 6:50 pm EST

For the first ever, I’m actually excited about receiving a new issue.

boatman | 9/17/2008, 7:08 pm EST

Meat-head music for meat-heads. Anyone over 14 still listening to Meatallica should try reaching puberty.

Finally a real band on the cover of Rolling Stone! And I’m not talking about The Jonas Brothers…..

benny | 9/17/2008, 9:32 pm EST

Metallica on RS is a breath of fresh air.

I don’t care for Death Magnetic too much (sounds like a big band jam…lacked structure) but I can still respect them for making a record that their fanbase will love.

It’s by far the most legitimate mainstream rock record out in quite some time.

wickit pickit | 9/17/2008, 9:38 pm EST

Nice cover, they must of had leprechaun Lars stand on some phone books

Bobby C | 9/18/2008, 12:13 am EST

Master of Puppets [Elektra, 1986] B-
I feel at a generational disadvantage with this music not because my weary bones can’t take its power and speed but because I was born too soon to have my dendrites rerouted by progressive radio. This band’s momentum can be pretty impressive, and as with a lot of fast metal (as well as some sludge) they seem to have acceptable political motivations–antiwar, anticonformity, even anticoke, fine. But the revolutionary heroes I envisage aren’t male chauvinists too inexperienced to know better; they don’t have hair like Samson and pecs like Arnold Schwarzenegger. That’s the image Metallica calls up, and I’m no more likely to invoke their strength of my own free will than I am The 1812 Overture’s. B-

Bopgun | 9/18/2008, 12:17 am EST

I was going to point out how dumb metal was/is but boatman summed it up quickly and perfectly –
MEAT-HEAD MUSIC FOR MEAT-HEADS
Anyone older than 20 still listening to hilariously awful metal bands needs to move out of their parents basement and finally kiss a girl.

if you | 9/18/2008, 12:43 am EST

hate metal…why post here?

i hate the jonas brothers, you don’t see me posting on their cover story…

mr. heavy metal | 9/18/2008, 1:02 am EST

metallica used to be good, new album is pretty average but i’d rather listen to it then bland pop music played every 5 seconds.

metal is certainly not for meatheads, it’s complex music almost like classical music only heavier.

Anonymous | 9/18/2008, 2:13 am EST

Why don’t you listen to the new album before making judgment. It is the best work they have done since Justice. Try it out if you used to like them! Also to the Meat head Posters, I’m 27, 4th semster pharmacy school student and engaged. So your theory of who listens to metal is just as bad as any racial sterotype!! Fools Metal Rocks. What do you listen to Pink? or maybe Maroon 5? No technicality in that music! Try playing metal on guitar and maybe you would have respect!

Cheesecrop | 9/18/2008, 8:09 am EST

Thanks for putting a real act on the cover! I read that these gents have set some kind of record by having their 5th studio album at #1, at that only Zeppelin had more. And, to all of you who are about to toss out the “Don’t compare this (80’s/90’s/00’s) act to this (60’s/70’s) please spare me your bleating whines. I know it’s totally unbearable for you to face the facts that modern acts may be (actually not may be, but can be) definitively better than the crust-engorged remnants of the past, but it does happen. Live w/it!

Al D. | 9/18/2008, 11:25 am EST

“Justice” was last great Metallica record. Haven’t bought anything since, but will check this out. Always thought that the first 4 albums were incredible; likended them to the first 4 Sabbath albums.

V | 9/18/2008, 11:30 am EST

These days you certainly have to take RS with a grain of salt but Metallica on the cover – that’s a given isn’t it?

I give it 4.5 stars since Unforgiven III and Cyanide are a little weak but no doubt their best work since Justice.

Whether you like them or not Metallica is one of the most sucsessful and influential bands of all time. Rank ‘em up there with the Beatles and Led Zepplelin – the numbers do not lie people.

This album could not have been made without the sub-par albums of the late 90’s as well as the therapy-laced St. Anger.

I hear a little bit of every one of their albums in Death Magnetic.

APOCALYPSE – killer intro’ that reminds me a little of “Holier than Thou” from the Black album and the rest of the song obviously sounds a lot like Whiplash from Kill ‘Em All with a little St. Anger egde to it.

THE DAY THAT NEVER ENDS – structured very much like “One”. The first 3-4 minutes comes from the Load/ Re-Load era and the last 3-4 minute jam is basically it’s own separate song – similar to the arranging on Master of Puppets.

ALL NIGHTMARE LONG – instant classic that could’ve been on the Black Album with a little bit of Justice added in. This is best Hetfield has sounded since Justice.

BROKEN BEAT & SCARRED – instant classic with yet another amazing message about the grind of the rock & roll lifestyle and what it can do to a person. More super heavy and amazing guitar work! Maybe one of their best songs ever IMO. Can anybody else on the planet create this sound?

THE JUDAS KISS – another classic with a powerful drug addiction message similar to Master of Puppets.

SUICIDE & REDEMPTION – back to the instrumental days of Ride the Lightning – Cliff would be proud!

When Hetfield is on his game he is one of the best rock songwriters alive. He hasn’t written lyrics or sounded like this since Justice. Is there anybody else better when it comes to channeling raw emotions into a powerful lyric? He says so much without having to say a lot if that makes sense.

The guitar work and arrangement on this album might be their best ever IMO – memorable and fresh riffs, organic and blazing solos by Kirk, Lars drumming like a maniac, and the complicated jigsaw arrangement that somehow flows within the song – all Metallica trademarks.

To all of those Metallica haters that were fans of their old sound – you have to appreciate this album. If not then I doubt that you were ever true Metallica fans.

Actually... | 9/18/2008, 11:58 am EST

..Beatallica are the Beatles of metal. Check em out. In particular, “Got to Get You Trapped under Ice” is one of my faves. BTW, Death Magnetic is really good.

Poopy Pants | 9/18/2008, 11:58 am EST

C’mon RS, couldn’t you have put the Jonas Brothers on the cover again instead of Metallica?

Basement Guy | 9/18/2008, 3:37 pm EST

Louder? Faster? Stronger? Where is it? I can’t hear it on the CD.

Gills | 9/18/2008, 4:40 pm EST

I’ve only heard clips from it, so I’ll reserve judgement. But anyone that says this is the best metal album since the 80’s has missed out out Mastodon in the last few years. Mastodon is NOW what Metallica USED TO BE.

RICHARD | 9/18/2008, 5:53 pm EST

A VERY GOOD ALBUM. IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT …WHO CARES??? ALL OF YOU KNOW WHICH BAND STILL RULES EVEN WITH ST. ANGER RECORDED. NO BAND IN THE WHOLE WORLD EXISTS WHITOUT A CHANGE THROUGH ITS HISTORY. STOP SAYING “METALLICA USED TO BE..” GO TO SOME SHOW AND THEN TELL ME. COULD YOU BE ON YOUR FEET WITH MY APOCALYPSE SOUNDING?? COME ON YOU GAYS!!!! I’M SURE IT WILL KICK YOUR ASS.

V | 9/18/2008, 5:58 pm EST

Mastadon’s music is good but I can’t understand what the hell they’re saying. Sounds like two animals fucking.

black bottom | 9/18/2008, 6:10 pm EST

I guess Metallica are a bunch of pretty tough guys in their leather jackets barking about death and pounding on their instruments.
They tried to grow up but their fans won’t let them so they stopped trying.
But since their favorite drug is alcohol …. there wasn’t going to be much growth anyway.

Grow up, Bopgun and Boatman | 9/18/2008, 6:58 pm EST

You think that anyone still listening to Metallica is a loser? I’m 37; have a doctorate; love my job; earn over $100,000 per year; own 2 homes (my residence plus an investment rental property); have a close relationship with my parents (who live 800 miles away); speak one foreign language fluently and another at a basic level; am active in politics; have visited nearly every State in the US and province in Canada; donate fairly generously to charity; and have rescued a dog from the animal shelter. And I just got engaged ………………. Gee, I don’t know if I can meet your high standards ……………………… METALLICA ROCKS.

Anonymous | 9/18/2008, 7:10 pm EST

This is an pretty damn good album from rock legends. I give it a solid 4 stars out of 5 after 3 complete listens. All they had to do was release three albums (Master of Puppets, …and Justice for All, and the Black Album) and their legacy was secure. Thankfully, they misfired with St. Anger, which led them down the path that eventually became Death Magnetic. “All Nightmare Long” stands out for me. Good job guys.

Lars, your forehead is simply biblical, but I like the fact that in a recent interview you said you would like to play on the same bill with U2.

Arshetect | 9/19/2008, 10:06 am EST

No one puts out a true ALBUM anymore. With f**king ITunes, you don’t need to it seems….until you get bored of the “shuffle” Thanks to Jaymz, Larz, Kirk, and Rob for putting their headz together to create a meaningful album…something to sink your teeth into…

‘tallica rules!!

Can’t wait to see you guys in NYC!

quickfast | 9/19/2008, 3:04 pm EST

i would like to agree with Arshetect by saying that only Metallica could put out an album that is great from first to last song. I’m personally tired of buying( yes i still buy cd’s not downloads)albums that have two or three GOOD songs on them. ‘Tallica can still be metal giants like they always have been!!! Metallica are going to the biggest selling band in the record stores and on the road this year!! see you boys on long island in January!

chana's snakepit | 9/23/2008, 9:33 am EST

The album is brilliant!! love it!!
Metallica ARE fucking rock legends!! METAL GODS!!
I wasn’t worried about the album being shit. i knew the album was going to be great. I know i shouldn’t be judging on the album by just hearing clips and demo’s but it was fucking fantastic!!
long may metallica rule!!
“one” James Hetfield
Lars Ulrich
Kirk Hammett
Rob trujillo!!
tallic tallica tallica!!!

49er | 1/2/2009, 10:08 pm EST

Metallica is now taking back the heavy metal crown. Other than St. Anger every other album is great. i got into these gents back when i was in high school, and i still can’t get enough. I listen to several other bands but none of them compare to Metallica.

metalicat!!!!!!!!!!! | 1/18/2009, 1:07 am EST

So awesome, if you people could listen, I mean wtf? The Jonas BS? Truely Metallica is phenomenal, and the cover is amazing, please put it on a shirt! I will b the first one to buy!

Great Album | 9/23/2009, 2:54 am EST

I haven’t been a fan of albums in recent years due to the fact that there’s usually one or two good songs on them and the rest is just filler, specifically made for their ITunes sales. But this album just rules from the first song to the last. I’m a huge fan of their older classics like “Enter Sandman” “For Whom the Bell Tolls”, and just about all of their songs. If you’re a true Metallica fan, you’ll enjoy this album. Each and every song on here has its own sound and quality. Unfrogiven III is a nice change of pace and is a good closure to the 3-parter, even though it seems some people weren’t big fans of it. You judge the album yourself, though. You can’t really know if you’ll like something till u try it right?

drocher | 10/18/2009, 5:43 am EST
