Queen Return With Paul Rodgers: “Imitating Freddie Would Be Pointless”

9/16/08, 11:55 am EST

Check out this awesome video of Queen with Paul Rodgers performing for more than 350,000 people last week in the Ukraine (they don’t come onstage until about four minutes in to the video, so skip ahead). The show, dubbed “Life Must Go On!” raised money and awareness around HIV/AIDS issues in the former Soviet republic, a topic obviously close to the band: “Queen lost its singer many years ago, so we know that this can affect anybody,” drummer Roger Taylor told the AP.

Rolling Stone recently caught up with the band as they were prepping the release of their first new material in 14 years (with Rodgers stepping in for Freddie Mercury), October 28th’s The Cosmos Rocks. “We could have had any number of people come along and imitate Freddie, but it would be pointless,” Brian May says. “Paul’s brought us back to a greater awareness of our instinctive side.”

This is a powerful cd from a very talented NEW GROUP that calls itself QUEEN & PAUL RODGERS. If you are expecting a FREDDIE sound-alike, I suggest you buy all of the Queen CD’s that you can- ’cause this isn’t Freddie. Its Queen and Paul Rodgers, and you will either like this cd a lot(like I do) or you won’t. But quit whining- noone will ever replace the great Freddie Mercury. Ever. So hat’s off to Brian, Roger, and Paul for not trying to.

sandrativadar | 9/19/2008, 9:09 pm EST

I agree with this comment: If you’ve lost half your band, or at least its soul, change the freakin’ name!! I love Queen! I respect Brian and Roger!! But it’s not Queen!!

»QUEEN + Paul Rodgers new studio album “THE COSMOS ROCKS” =TERRIFIC!

Don’t get me wrong, Paul Rogers is a great rock singer. It’s just that Freddy was such a technical singer in his range and dynamics I felt Queen would have really been better off to find a lead singer that isn’t known for star power but more as a singer who’s like an instrument. All they had to do was scout out the music conservatories and opera singers out there to find a singer that could kick ass on all levels.
It’s like Freddy was a priceless Steinway and it’s like they replaced him with a high end Yamaha–still sounds good but not the same class of instrument at all.

Don’t care what any of y’all say, Tie Your Mother Down at the end of this clip rocked out, whatever they decide to call themselves. You have to appreciate the smart business decision in using the names people know and love. It’s a lot simpler than creating a new group with a new name and then having to “relaunch” as a group and establish a completely new image. Queen + Paul Rogers is a smarter marketing move and doesn’t tarnish Freddy Mercury at all.

Mr. Mustard (Beatles fan?)

How can you call The Who a joke today, and Daltrey and Townshend hypocrites? How dare you claim the right to tell them who they can tour with and what they can call themselves?
Had Moon and Entwistle been murdered, killed in a car cash, died of cancer or, like Freddie Mercury, AIDs, then it might be a different story. But the truth is - and no one is a bigger Who/Entwistle/Moon fan than I - The Who can carry on because in a sad, unfortunate way, Moon and Entwistle allowed themselves to be rock casualties. They did it due to their excesses and habits. I don’t mean for that sound cold, but you have to see it from Townshend and Daltrey’s point. In a way, Moon and the Ox chose to leave the other two behind. Townshend and Daltrey can still call it The Who if they want. Why don’t people beat up on The (great) Rolling Stones for changing personnel? That’s hypocritical.

The Who of today is a joke. They might put on a fine show, but it’s not the who. They call themselves that to sell tickets and to make money, afraid that if they did otherwise people wouldn’t care. They are the biggest hypocritical band in history, or should I say, Townshend and Daltrey are. Shameful.
Queen doesn’t seem to be so diabolical about it. Everyone should know it won’t be the same, but the musicians of the band are, so it’s worth a try.

I’m 26, and was turned on to Queen right around the time Freddie died. I think that added to their mystique, at least in my perception as a young guy. I would prefer that the band change its name to avoid the dissonance decribed by another commentor. Both camps are good, but none are Queen.

MightyThor | 9/17/2008, 7:24 am EST

I agree with most of these comments. If you’ve lost half your band, or at least its soul, change the freakin’ name!! I love Queen! I respect Brian and Roger!! But it’s not Queen!!

Bezdomny | 9/17/2008, 5:52 am EST

I won’t insult the band for deciding to continue in this form, it is their creation and their choice, but I feel that strange kind of cognitive dissonance listening to this clip, like it is high budget karaoke. I was never a huge Queen fan, and some bands can change memebers with little substantive change to the music, but Mercury’s voice was integral to Queen, and if the sound is the music, this is not Queen, that time is gone, and so is it’s voice. The remaining members are still alive and still want to play the music they love and I understand that feeling, but maybe they could have started a new group. I don’t think any Beatle (post Ringo) would have ever performed as the Beatles without the entire unit, because the Beatles were John, Paul, Ringo and George. You cannot separate the music from the people who made it, all of the people.

basser | 9/17/2008, 1:03 am EST

Ahh, the heated debate continues about bands moving on without all of the original members.
Of course, I’d see a Who reference below, being that they are the band picked on the most for continuing to tour.
It’s still The Who now, although a different band than when Moon and The Ox were alive, but it’s still The Who.

As long as May, Rodgers and Taylor keep the name as “Queen + Paul Rodgers,” I think it’s all right. If they just called the band “Queen,” it would be a different story. Especially since original bassist John Deacon isn’t playing with them anymore.

Alex | 9/17/2008, 12:50 am EST

First off…they are not going under the name Queen. They have ALWAYS billed themselves as Queen + Paul Rodgers.

Secondly, Paul Rodgers is one of the finest singers in the history of rock ‘n’ roll and to say that he can’t do the songs justice is ridiculous. Just because he doesn’t sing in the same register or style as Freddie doesn’t make him inferior. In fact, Rodgers was Freddie Mercury’s favorite rock singer. (Look it up!) He sings the songs with soul, passion, and conviction, the way they should be sung. I’d much rather hear that than some soulless, prancing Freddie wannabe.

Kudos to all of them for carrying on this music. Can’t wait to hear the new album!

fitzbath | 9/16/2008, 10:01 pm EST

Yes, bands with missing original members are not the same…. but these “hybrids” are still a great way for fans of these bands to enjoy the music.
These guys need to stay active because they still have alot of talent.
I hope the general public is smart enough to understand it’s not the same band even though
they have the same name.
Then again maybe they’re not smart enough….(pathetic).

Its Queen Company!!! or Bad Queen ! either way its a rocking album cant wait for the US release get the UK Version like I did its well worth it

John Sposato | 9/16/2008, 5:28 pm EST

I bought the album early from Europe because I couldn’t wait, and I can say that it’s Queen redefined for the 21st century. Freddie would want the band to continue. The NY Post said he met Paul Rodgers once. If you can’t handle “The Voice of Rock” on Queen, then go see a tribute band (I did anyway).

bob | 9/16/2008, 4:38 pm EST

paul can sing his songs not bad but trying to do queen songs freddie and all the band members singing together made the queen sound paul cant do that they need to create there own sound

MorganScott | 9/16/2008, 3:59 pm EST

I’m all for the members of Queen making music with Paul Rodgers, but calling it Queen is an insult to Freddie Mercury.

Some bands just don’t know when to retire the name.

phil | 9/16/2008, 3:56 pm EST

saw them in San Diego a couple years ago. it was a great show (not amazing) with Paul but when they cranked out Bohemian Rhapsody and in the middle played video of Freddie singing lead and playing the piano with the live band - man gave me goosebumps. I look forward to the new cd. Anything Brian May does is awesome.

spook76 | 9/16/2008, 3:36 pm EST

It’s not Queen without Mercury, just as it’s not The Who without Entwistle and Moon, or The Doors without Morrison. Period.

Alice | 9/16/2008, 1:27 pm EST

Meh!! I really really really wanted to go to that or the one coming up in England. I was soooooo close to getting tickets. Ok, now i feel like crying. Queen Rock!!!
