Pink Floyd Founding Member Rick Wright Dead at 65

9/15/08, 1:03 pm EST

Rick Wright, keyboardist and a founding member of Pink Floyd, died today after a battle with cancer. He was 65. “The family of Richard Wright, founder member of Pink Floyd, announce with great sadness that Richard died today after a short struggle with cancer,” Wright’s spokesman said. “The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this difficult time.” Wright, along with Syd Barrett, Roger Waters and drummer Nick Mason, laid the foundation for Pink Floyd, with Wright’s organ work one of the trademarks of the band’s debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. With the addition of David Gilmour and the subtraction of Syd Barrett, Wright’s responsibilities with Floyd expanded, writing and singing on two songs on the band’s second album A Saucer Full of Secrets. Among Wright’s most well-known works as a member of Pink Floyd are co-writing credits on “Us & Them,” “The Great Gig in the Sky” and the Atom Heart Mother gem “Summer ‘68.” In a sidebar to a feature last year, David Fricke said of “Us & Them,” “Rick Wright composed the floating-chord piano figure at the heart of this song during the sessions for Zabriskie Point. Director Michelangelo Antonioni rejected it, allowing Wright to resurrect the theme for this Dark Side highlight.” Wright remained a member of Pink Floyd until a rift with Roger Waters resulted in his exit after The Wall. Wright later rejoined the band when David Gilmour took over the reins after Waters left the band. Wright was also on hand when the band reunited in 2005 for the Live 8 concert in London. Recently, Wright had joined David Gilmour’s solo tour. Check out the playlist of key Richard Wright songs below.

This very sad. Pink Floyd are one of my favorite bands, and I have always loved Rick’s contributions to the Pink Floyd sound. The Summer ‘68 is one of those great Floyd tracks that gets lost in the shuffle of all their mega-hits. I will now be playing his “Wet Dream” solo album and Floyd for the rest of the day.

Bruce Hazen | 9/15/2008, 1:11 pm EST

RIP Rick; the Ravel of Pink Floyd.

Remember A Day…

Lawrence of Suburbia | 9/15/2008, 1:15 pm EST

RIP Rick, you will be missed. Those Miles Davis-influenced chords in “Great Gig In The Sky”; the gentle sentiments of “Remember A Day”…I’ll be spinning some Floyd today.

Jughead | 9/15/2008, 1:18 pm EST

R.I.P. Rick. I’ll smoke a doobie tonight in your memory while listening to “Us and Them” and the Dark Side of the Moon album.

dan lanigan | 9/15/2008, 1:18 pm EST

Ledgendary band that has left an indelible mark on music. Rick, you will be missed by millions. I wish you well as you Set the Controls for the heart of the sun.

KW in SC | 9/15/2008, 1:21 pm EST

I know Roger Waters wants to take credit for everything Pink Floyd but can you imagine DSOTM without Great Gig or Us & Them? I sure can’t. I also know whenever I saw David on his slide and Rick on piano playing beside each other on Great Gig that it WAS Pink Floyd! Rick’s contributions to the Floyd are too numerous to count! He did a great job singing and playing Arnold Layne on Gilmour’s tour as well. Shine On Rick the world will have your music forever!!!!

Swingline | 9/15/2008, 1:24 pm EST

Makes it even more memorable that the surviving Floyd Members got back together for Live8 and were able to bring it full circle on good terms.

Rest in Peace Rick, thanks for the great music…

clench | 9/15/2008, 1:24 pm EST

Man, I am so sad! What can I add. Rick’s music will always be a comfort. So long old friend.

Wow. This actually depresses me quite a bit.

He was brilliant

luke | 9/15/2008, 1:42 pm EST

This is too sad. I’ve been on a Pink Floyd kick for the last couple weeks. Rick Wright’s contributions to the Pink Floyd sound were astounding. Songs like “See Saw,” “Remember a Day,” “Paintbox,” “Us and Them,” etc. are gems. In his honor, I will listen to Wish You Were Here tonight, as that was his favorite album. RIP Rick

tom in vegas | 9/15/2008, 1:45 pm EST

Rick really was the heart of Pink Floyd. His keyboards were always the lynchpin to the Floyd “sound” which was the musical key. Most rock music is guitar driven, and Floyd was blessed with a great one in David Gilmour after he took over for Syd, but the keyboards was their true musical fingerprint.

CarlosV | 9/15/2008, 1:45 pm EST

Goodbye Rick, may you rest in peace…thanks for the music, man..and say hello to the crazy diamond from all of us….

sad day in rock. PF is one of the greats. Roger dont be prick reunite with David

Matt | 9/15/2008, 1:51 pm EST

This is just devastating. Last night I was watching live at Pompeii thinking Rick is bar none the backbone of Pink Floyd. He will be greatly missed by everyone in the music community, but his sound will live on forever as he takes on his Great Gig in the Sky. RIP RICK

Joe Solar | 9/15/2008, 1:56 pm EST

hannibalsloat | 9/15/2008, 2:01 pm EST

Thank you Richard for your OUTSTANDING contribution to music. To quote Henry Van Dyke: “Some people are so afraid do die that they never begin to live”. Richard lived and will continue to live through the music and legacy he has left with us. R.I.P

I went to bed last night listening to Dark Side of the Moon. He will be missed. Rest in peace, and thank you for your music.

hockey beatle | 9/15/2008, 2:03 pm EST

Rick was vastly underrated…some of the mid70s live cuts show just what an important cog in the PF machine.

Matt | 9/15/2008, 2:05 pm EST

Rip Rick say hi to sid for me

Rick

You were brilliant !!!

Thank you

May god rest your soul in peace

Guy Incognito | 9/15/2008, 2:11 pm EST

Rick Wright’s influence on Pink Floyd’s sound was always so tragically understated. I’ll be listening to Broken China, Dark Side of the Moon, and Live at Pompeii today just to remember again the guy that made using keyboards in rock completely unpretentious and seamless

Bas | 9/15/2008, 2:15 pm EST

Thank you for the wonderful music and moments you have given us!!!

Rest in peace and enjoy your great gig in the sky!!!

Allen | 9/15/2008, 2:20 pm EST

Ouch! This hurts somehow, i really thought a reunion tour was still possible. Sad day for music. R.I.P. RR

Carol | 9/15/2008, 2:25 pm EST

Rick WAS Pink Floyd. His keyboards gave their songs their distinctive sound. Definitely underestimated. He will be missed.

Deepest sympathy. You were one of a kind Rick.

The most underrated and most loved. I’ve been crying for the past hour, I only just found out.

I was listening to Intersteller Overdrive Mono, fell asleep for an hour, woke up and read about it while posting on the Ultimate Guitar website about Dave admitting in an interview that a Floyd reunion will never happen again.

I’m absolutely devastated, since i was 19 Floyd have been my world.

RIP Rich, say hello to Rog while your up there. You’ll be missed more than words can describe. :~(

Tino | 9/15/2008, 2:37 pm EST

Wow, I can’t believe it. Rick was a vital part of Pink Floyd from beginning to end. He’ll be missed, but the music lives on forever.

DAVID DE ORTA | 9/15/2008, 2:39 pm EST

ONE OF THE GREATEST IN KEYBOARDS, UN GRANDE SE FUE, GRACIAS POR SU MUSICA.

Smoky | 9/15/2008, 2:41 pm EST

This is absolutely devastating news and I am truly saddended by this loss much more than words can describe. Wait a minute.. who died again?

Dave | 9/15/2008, 2:43 pm EST

this is a true tragedy, he was, in my opinion, the best at his own instrument in pink floyd, and that didn’t make too technical, because he played with a lot of heart. just listening to his playing in dark side is heartwarming. You will be missed, Rick.

Greg | 9/15/2008, 2:43 pm EST

40 years of music have just turned to stone. RIP

Winston | 9/15/2008, 2:44 pm EST

Goodbye Rick,

Now Pink Floyd is trully gone.

orhan | 9/15/2008, 2:45 pm EST

he will always be ‘forever young’, and will be remembered, for his music, made life joyful and meaningful to many people, may he rest in peace.

Lord vespatron | 9/15/2008, 2:49 pm EST

A master of pastel toned melodies. An underrated, understated singer of melancholic scenes of human life.. From Paintbox on, he never wrote a bad melody. As keyboardist, he evolved from freakbeat fare to give right from the second album an hypnotic, rich, almost classical church majesty to the songs. He broke away from space to give us life, with all its grey and browns. Sadly missed.

Gwen | 9/15/2008, 3:10 pm EST

R.I.P Rick, you’ll play a great gig in the sky.

Sean | 9/15/2008, 3:15 pm EST

When I was first learning to play keyboards, Rick was one of my idols. Not only did I love his sound, but this was a guy with a couple writing credits on one of the greatest albums in all of rock. I’d like to hear some comments from his old bandmates, particularly Roger Waters. Perhaps Riger and Dave will take this as a sign, a reminder of their own mortality, and pay tribute to their fallen friend in the form of a tour.

Silvia Venna | 9/15/2008, 3:17 pm EST

Music is made by silence too…Rick will keep on playing in our hearts forever.

SaM bOoKwEl | 9/15/2008, 3:19 pm EST

A very very sad day :-(
Thanks to you Rick Wright for all the marvelous music you gave us

Paul | 9/15/2008, 3:33 pm EST

Pink Floyd was my generation’s “Beatles.” Losing Rick is like losing George Harrison. His influence was quietly and respectfully put into everything that the Pink Floyd would become known as. There will never be another Pink Floyd and there will never be another Rick Wright. I hope to see you again in that great Gig in the Sky. Though you are absent from us may you be in the presence of God.

Rick, along with Dave G. were the two most favorite members. They could put out some riffs that stayed in my mind for years, even decades.

I will miss Rick Wright. I miss those times of listening to his stuff for the first time.

A tragedy of epic proportions, A truly iconic performer who put his heart, soul, and love into his music and shared it with the whole world for many years. He will be missed terribly but remembered for an eternity. I wish to offer my heartfelt sorrow to his family and his musical mates. R.I.P Richard Wright and give Syd a hug when you see him…..

I picked up Floyd with Meddle and of course Echoes. Loved them ever since. I saw them in summer of 75 at Knebworth when they played Crazy Diamond at dusk before it was released. 250000 people on a warm summer evening. They were so much a part of my youth. Love them still.Bye Rick

German | 9/15/2008, 3:52 pm EST

A truely sad day. And the sadder it becomes when we all understand that the generation of great, truely talented musicians are getting 60 and 70+ and soon they are about to exit. Who will we listen to then? So long Mr.Wright, thanx for you great endevours and long live to Bob, Stones, Paul and all the old dudes that make people happy with their art!

Vintage | 9/15/2008, 3:53 pm EST

Rick Wright was a very underrated ingredient of Pink Floyd. I’m privileged to say I saw him with Floyd and David Gilmour. He looked very happy playing with Gilmour in 2006. Wish I could I have heard more from him. RIP Rick Wright.

I haven’t been this shaken up by a musician passing away since the passing of Stevie Ray Vaughn and Freddie Mercury.

Rick lived a long and fruitful life and I think I speak for millions that the one thing everyone would have wished for was one final reunion tour. I am happy I was able to see him perform live back in 88 and see him do his keyboards on Shine On and his vocals on Time.

RIP Rick. You will sorely be missed by true music lovers.

Im lost for words, i cant just believe he´s gone, one of the creative forces of Pink Floyd, one important piece of Pink Floyd has met his destiny.

As he as all the other members knew there shall be an end to the road, a race towards the grave, close the faith into their knees, to hear the softly spoken, magic spells.

A black black day for me, i never had the honor to hear him play live.

RIP Rick Wright 1943-2008.

Millions of us will miss you.

His was the quiet, uber-British sounding voice that encapsuled the Floyd sound. Rick, you were a one-of-a-kind and a class act. Godspeed, good man.

Old Fart at Play | 9/15/2008, 7:10 pm EST

Truly unique, wildly creative, beautifully elegant and vastly underrated. Roger Waters can blather all he wants about being the “creative genius behind Pink Floyd” but Rick Wright was AS indispensable to the Floyd sound as David Gilmour. Hearing Rick play always gives me goosebumps, especially the majesty of Echoes and Us & Them, and the melancholy flow of Shine On You Crazy Diamond, particularly that luminescent electric piano and synth near the end…gorgeous. Thanks, Rick, for a lifetime of GREAT MUSIC.

johnny | 9/15/2008, 7:23 pm EST

as the flame burns out on another musician few or none hurt as bad as the news of rick. pink floyd has lost another legend but only in body not in spirit. words can never express what you and the all the band members from the early times till present have meant to me. i am truly and deeply saddened and my thoughts are for your family, remainding band members and all the pink floyd fans. your music will always be played at our home. Godspeed

David | 9/15/2008, 7:23 pm EST

We’ll always hear the echoes Rick. Thank you for that. God Bless.

DAVID | 9/15/2008, 7:33 pm EST

goddammit. people keep dying left and right. and it puts my long hoped for pink floyd reunion long out of reach. Rest im peace, we wont forget you.

Pink Floyd | 9/15/2008, 7:36 pm EST

There goes the last hope of a pink floyd reunion tour, this is a very sad day for music, i am very depressed right now, i just cant stand the shock….
I am expecting some words from the rest of the floyd members, and definately a reunion tour, David has always been reluctant about it but i think on this occasion they have to pay tribute to one of the key soulds of pink floyd….

Marcello from Italy | 9/15/2008, 7:39 pm EST

This is extremely sad..Thank you Rick…Your art made my life better. May you rest in peace

Kimmer | 9/15/2008, 7:51 pm EST

Every now and then, tragically, the Good Lord walks up (if you believe in this fellow) and bitch-slaps you up-along side the head and takes away something so dear to you, so close to you, you can’t fathom the loss.

This is how I feel about losing Rick to cancer. Short battles are always painful battles when it comes to cancer. I hope it was not painful for him and those who held him close.

A breath-taking loss. I actually gasped for breath the moment I heard the news. I don’t want to appear selfish.

I FEEL for his family, his friends, fellow musicians and co-horts, as we all should…their loss is much deeper than ours, as fans.

They lost a Dad, an uncle, a pal, a companion. Much more connected to him, than us, to his music.

Jeez, just so unexpected and sad, as these things usually are…peace to all for your loss.

javier | 9/15/2008, 7:55 pm EST

A shockin moment, received the new by a sms on my cell. Couldn’t believe it.
A very sad moment, some friends are sayin how can I shed a tear for someone
I didn´t meet?… All I can say is, Rick is part of our lives, The Pink
Floyd Sound of London is now offically gone. Mr. Wright, please keep playing
whit Syd and we all gonna hear the band you are in, playing diffenrent tunes
from the Dark Side of the Moon.
We’ll really miss you.

i really think Rolling Stone should take a little trip in history and revisit their roots by putting Ricks picture on the cover of the next issue. He was an enormous inspiration, and anyone who listens to Floyd, should pay their respects.

RW put the ‘pro’ in progressive music.Listen to Lucifer Sam,Summer 68,Echoes,Matilda M,Sheep. He knew how to create atmosphere and mood in a song. He and Syd were bigger than life, hard to accept that they could be cancer victims. Both had a bigger family than they knew. Thanks for some of the best musical moments in rock.

so many generations enjoyed great moments listening to Richard Wright’s great playing on those 70’s Floyd albums….Us And Them alone immortalizes him forever

David Jenkins | 9/15/2008, 9:24 pm EST

C’Mon, put Rick on the next cover. He was an essential part of one of the world’s most significant bands. Pay respect not just to him but to your readers like me, who have supported Rolling Stone since issue #1, and who are pained by the loss of this beautiful musician after his work being a part of our lives for four decades. C’mon. Do the right thing.

Mikelrocks | 9/15/2008, 9:24 pm EST

I feel such a personal loss..as nothing has ever touched my soul musically like “Great Gig In The Sky” and “Us & Them” among his other great works….I am deeply saddened with today’s news…but I like to think that he is playing at a great gig in the sky, with Syd, John Lennon, and Hendrix…Wow what a band…

THX-1138 | 9/15/2008, 9:31 pm EST

Oh great…another “oh fuck” moment just like when Carlin died earlier this year. I hate to see someone like this die at a such a young age. Yes, 65 is too young. At least Waters and Gilmour put differences aside long enough to reunite for Live 8. This makes that performance even more special.

Arnold Layne | 9/15/2008, 9:41 pm EST

Would have loved to have seen the band tour again. You’re forgiven Roger. Thanks for Any Colour You Like, Richard! RIP

R.I.P., Rick. You truly contributed to the soundtrack to millions of lives. My condolences to his family, friends and band mates.

Shawn Weigel | 9/15/2008, 10:25 pm EST

I just want to add that “Great Gig in the Sky” is also one of his finest moments, and you should track down the live version on “Pulse” for the penultimate rendering of this great piece of music. I love you Richard. Shine on.

an underappreciated contributor to some of the most horrifying, uplifting, and inventive music ever made. i’m sure it had been said in comments before me, but rick is on to the great gig in the sky. adios and thank you, gentleman rock star

Chris | 9/15/2008, 11:39 pm EST

Richard Wright – my favorite Floyd! He was the bedrock of the Pink Floyd sound and his unassuming demeanor allowed Gilmour and Waters the spotlight. His brilliance comes through on every piece he ever wrote: Check out “Stay” “See-Saw” “Summer of ‘68″ “Paintbox” “Remember a Day” “Mudmen” “Wearing the Inside Out.” “It would be so nice.” He was known as the real musician of the band who brought the fancy/unusual chords and hooks to the studio.

Do yourself a real favor and pick up his solo albums “Wet Dream” and “Broken China.” They are amazing!!!

Scott | 9/15/2008, 11:49 pm EST

I totally agree that he should be put on the cover. We need to appreciate artists like this more, while they are alive and not just market their death

Damone | 9/15/2008, 11:53 pm EST

I feel as if I’ve just lost a family member. As “Echoed” by many here already you will sorely be missed but you’re music will Shine On forever…….got to see Floyd on the Division Bell & also the ‘On an Island’ tour at Radio City, I was fortunate enough to see some of Richard’s finest moments….I will never forget them — off to The Great Gig In The Sky

Dynadin | 9/16/2008, 12:06 am EST

Sudden deaths are no less of a shock… perhaps even more so.
Thank you for your music and sincere condolences to your family.
I think I’ll find Wearing the Inside Out to be some small comfort.

Terrible news on the passing of yet another Floyd genius. This makes the Live 8 reunion even more crucial. Turn up “Paintbox”, “Remember a Day” or “Us and Them” and remember a genius gone far too soon….

OMG!So devastating to the music
world. I had no idea he was even sick. A moment of silence please…Rock-n-Roll Rick.

Tony | 9/16/2008, 12:53 am EST

I have had a few dreams in my life. Be in a band; check. See the Rolling Stones ( circa 70’s), figuring that one out. See Pink Floyd….I always had hope I would be able to see the “original” lineup. I remember the first time I really heard them. A fat bowl, great headphones and Wish You Were Here. The first thing hear hits you like an ominous storm, the Keys. Im sad for his family, Im sad for his friends, but Im sad cause Im from a generation that never saw one of the most influential bands of all time. With out Pink Floyd you could forget Radiohead, with out Floyd you could forget the Talking Heads. Thank you for your talent, thank you.

Another Floyd Fan | 9/16/2008, 1:11 am EST

Wow. I was just listening to Pink Floyd, when I read about Rick’s death.

I’ve always liked music, but ever since I was introduced to Pink Floyd, about 4 years ago, they have changed my life in a way I though no artists could.

The brilliant lyrics, the amazing music and the whole band concept was second to none.

What a sad day for music when a truly great musician like this, a dying breed, dies with relatively little coverage from the media. I suppose I like music too much, but boy is Pink Floyd out of this world.

I always wanted to get a chance to see them tour together, to let them iron out all the differences they had and make one last world tour after live 8.

With Wright, Floyd would have been devoid of a large portion of its musical brilliance. What a great musician Rick was, what a talent. And what a loss.

Thank you Rick, for giving more perspective to my life. Though I didn’t know you, I’ve felt your call across the sky (modified from Echoes, to which Rick Contributed a great deal).

Good bye Rick and

I’ll see you on the Dark Side of The Moon.

Calle | 9/16/2008, 1:21 am EST

The Music World has lost very very much when Rick died. “Great Gig In The Sky” says all.

Dwayne | 9/16/2008, 1:37 am EST

My favorite band of all time. I saw them live in Orlando in ‘86 in the pouring rain and I barely remember getting wet.

When I watched the Live 8 reunion I couldn’t believe that they could still sound so perfect after all these years. With Rick’s passing, those few songs may be the last that we will ever see of the greatest band of all time.

i remember when i saw McCartney here in boston right after George died and he sang “something” and “here today” and you could have heard a pin drop. Rick was like Floyd’s Harrison – quiet but so integral to the genius of the band. rest in peace Rick, your music will live on…

Very sad indeed! Rick Wright was a definate strong force behind Pink Floyd, 4 parts to the “Machine”. My college years were filled with Pink Floyd music in the early 70’s…and I had the pleasure to have seen them live in the summer of ‘73 when they were touring Dark Side of the Moon. I can remember that concert like it was yesterday even though I was most likely wasted….Thanks Rick and the Floyd for the memories. Peace!

Rick Wright was the glue that held the Pink Floyd sound together. The quiet, unassuming presence that let Roger Waters and David Gilmour shine. A sad day for music fans. There are no bands like Pink Floyd and there never will be. I,like many other die hard fans always held out hope we would be able to see the classic lineup on stage again. Sadly, that will never happen now.

Rick Wright is gone and I can’t believe it. His voice as solo vocalist or together with Gilmour’s in songs like Burning bridges, Echoes, Stay has always been my favourite all times. His keyboard playing, his gentle piano touch o and his swelling B3 sound will sound for ever. RIP!

Unfortuantely, I think he was the glue in Pink Floyd so this is probably the end of any chance of a Pink Floyd tour again.

I was contemplating recently what it will be like as I get older and begin to see more and more of these musicians… artist and others, who have provided so much inspiration to me pass away. In many ways the likes of Richard Wright have been much closer to me than family and friends at times, in going through the motions and emotions of life, good and bad, happy or sorrowful… I identify floyd with… A lot of moments in my life I dont have pictures of but I can play a song and be as close to that moment as ever. Musicians who give of themselves to create and inspire are priceless and Rick Wright contributed to painting those pictures for me, and though I never knew him, never saw Pink Floyd live, Im eternally greatful. God bless you Rick.

ryanmac | 9/16/2008, 7:47 pm EST

I wasn’t alive when all this amazing music actually came out, but thank god my dad brought me up well. He taught me all the good music, and he even took me to see roger waters perform. Even though he isn’t my favorite member of the band, it was an amazing show, the best show vie ever seen and ive been to over a dozen concerts. Anyways I was hopen for a reunion tour but I guess that’s not happening. Ill never forgets seeing them play together at live 8.

I don’t think that many other kids my age really appreciate what good music is, and the crap that they listen to has such bad messages and stuff. Ill never understand that. Just today I played dark side of the moon in my dorm on my radio and a kid actually asked what I was listening to and thought it sounded weird. About an hour later I was online and I read about rick’s death. And it sucks. Thanks for all the great music.

The riff between Rick and my idol Roger Waters Is well known, but I can only assume they loved each other when ego’s could be put aside. Im glad they did play together once again in 05. I feel great sadness for rick’s passing (and for his family) He was such a great mood setter on the keys, truely one of a kind. It’s sad that we aren’t able to listen to his fantastic musical landscapes any more. Another piece of my soul has died. Pink Floyd’s music has long been so much a part of me. The Genius of each and everyone of them was just short of miraculous, but having this much genius joined together in any one place at any one time to work on a joint creation is absolutely miraculous. I will always appreciate the music as it was ageless. It grows as we grow. Rick your music and contributions live on forever in your living music. God Bless. See you on the dark side of the moon.

The greatest tribute we can pay to this man is to keep on listening to his music and transmit this passion to our children. The dead of Rick Wright can’t be the end of an era, because Pink Floyd are eternal and although we may not have a CD, or their music recorded on a MP3 or K7 this music always live in our hearts and souls.
Good bye Rick. We own you a lot. Thank your for all

First heard Rick & Floyd on Echoes as a child… loved them ever since. They had a huge influence on my life and are the reason I learned to play guitar. Rick was an integral part of that amazing sound. Thank you! My thoughts go to his family & friends. We share your grief.

I could not begin to explain my adomoration for your body of work and would love to state that the work you did is indeed a structure that is real a sancutary of mine. In deed of the most ouststanding architectural place I have ever visited and thanks to you I can go to this structure, building, any time I want, with a few electronic devices. You built a dwelling that cannot ever be taken down…………………….. ……….

How ironic it is…whenever I felt down, depressed or just lonely I would put in some Floyd, crank up the headphones, turn down the lights and just slip away. Now I find myself doing this same routine but using a great mans talent to help me slip away from the pain of this very mans passing!! Pink Floyd has been the greatest influence on my life over the last 30 years, it is just utterly indescribable. To you young people out there, do yourself a huge favor, and give Floyd a chance. Listen to the words, listen to the meaning, and try to figure it all out if you can because IT ALL has meaning. By allowing Pink Floyd into your life you will become complete.

Godspeed Rick! Please be at peace Wright family and thank you very very much for sharing Rick with us, he has meant more to millions of people than anyone could ever imagine and he will never be forgotten!!!

RIP Rick. As the rest of Floyd did, in my early youth, you also reached deep into me and stirred something I didn’t know existed. So many years later I still don’t know what to call it, but it’s helped fashion who I am; it gives me hope when I have none; it inspires me when I feel let down. You will, of course, be missed. But, more so I hope that wherever it is beyond you have gone the blessings, love, and friendship you found here on earth also follow. Be well.

Rick Wright is the reason i became a synth/ keyboard musician. he was the quiet genius behind Pink Floyd! he was a pioneer who is responsible for what “electronica” music has evolved into today! using sound bytes and sampling was his concept, and almost every electronica band uses these techniques today! my music is totally influenced by him. i’ll see him on the “dark side of the moon”, when i arrive! This is so unfair and sad. ¿Why do only the good pass away? I’m crying as I write this. I wanna make a homage to you Rick but I can’t find the words. You are unforgettable when you sang Echoes with David. You and Floyd have been with me since I was 7. I’ll always remember your British gentleness, youi were such a gentleman and genius. I feel as if a close relative is dead. Rest in peace Rick. I’ll always love you and miss you terribly. Thanks for all your mucsic. To me Floyd is one of the Top 3 all time best bands.

This is very sad and unfair. Why do only the good pass away? I’m grieving and crying as I write this. I wanna pay a tribute to you Rick but I can’t find the right words. You gave us so much state of the art mucis. How can I forget you when you sand Echoes with David? How can I forget The Great Gig In The Sky? It’s impossible because you’re unforgettable. I feel as if a close relative is dead. I love you and miss you terribly already. To me Pink Floyd is one of the Top 3 best bands of all time.

Pete Meehan | 9/19/2008, 10:05 pm EST

Some thoughts on this…

Some things change your life inextricably, and when you least expect it – Pink Floyd did for me, as it did for countless others. A truly amazing contribution to musical art that touched our souls forever.

It is a bit scary knowing that these musical giants are disappearing one by one and without serious replacements in view. I don’t want to get caught in the historical warp of “yesterday-was-better-than-tod ay”, but I honestly see little in the way of current day artists who can compare to the likes of these guys. Hope I am wrong…

In any case, I think the outstanding feature of Pink Floyd’s music was that it can make you high without actually ingesting something to make you high – now that’s a pretty good trick!

They have an emotional key to the soul.

Thank you for bending my mind in such a fantastic way!

RIP

I agree it has been a sad few years for the music industry losing so many influential artist and even maybe no so influential who shape and molded so many ears for the last 20 years or so, who’s stepping into these shoes? it’s hard to put a list together of 80s era,90s era 00s era artist who we will say in 15-25 years these people change music, change the sound, change the process, maybe it just that the industry is so inflated by just same sound band or artist and not pioneering artist, Sure I can name a few of the new names we will be still talking about in 15 years and we will say the did it but the list will be short in true quality, I wasnt old enough to remember the 70s, but boy do I know them how many band were there then, sure so were bad , really bad, but even those band still get airtime now and then, in todays world with new bands popping up every minute putting out an album then disappearing the next day, I thank the rock gods every day when I turn the radio on and get to hear Zepplin, the Who, the Doors,The Grateful Dead, Pink Flyod,The Rolling Stones, Allman Brothers, Cream, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaugn, CSNY, the list goes on and on, But if I tune in today I am lucky to hear U2, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, I know there is great music out there but its so hard to filter out the crap anymore that you just tune it all out, though just recently some new fresh band artist show great promise, I am just sad to see the legends pass, I know they wont fade away, just to know they are no longer with us is sad.

And I am glad that their music is strong enough that survived all these years and that I have managed to posion my children with it..

June 1972, Roosevelt Stadium with a full head of splendid LSD. The second set was the then unheard and unknown DSOTM. This was an epiphany, the first time I realized the awesome power of music. I have seen literally thousands of shows but the music and the audience that night was one of the most intense experiences of my life. Farewell, Richard. And thank you.

Gary Sutherland | 9/20/2008, 12:38 pm EST

Thanks for your amazing music talent through the years Richard! Pink Floyd is in a league of their own, no one else has a sound like them and never will. I have enjoyed listening and seeing Pink Floyd live in concert, it was one of my must haves in life and continue to listen on record or cd. Deepest sympathy to the Richard Wright family.

Ness K | 9/20/2008, 4:58 pm EST

I might be one of the youngest people leaving comments here, but even at 17 years of age, I’ve felt as though I’ve expereinced much from listening to Pink Floyd music. And I know, though others try to downplay and not acknowledge, that Richard Wright was one of the arkitechs of the Pink Floyd Sound. R.I.P Rick

Floyd Forever. There will never be another.

Farewell | 9/20/2008, 9:28 pm EST

In the same day I found out that my cousin and Rick Wright passed away. This is really strange but I’m much more upset with Rick’s passing than my cousins. Although Rick may not have written many of Floyd’s songs, can you imagine songs like Shine on You Crazy Diamond or Welcome to the Machine without his added brilliance? How about his contributions for One of These Days or Sheep? The man may not have been the driving force behind Pink Floyd but he added so much depth to what Waters and Gilmour wrote. I will truly miss him and can only hope that someday Floyd reunites to pay tribute to Rick. I for one am truly going to miss you Rick! You were someone that I would have liked to have seen live forever and you will be forever memorialized in the hearts of the fans! Shine on Rick…

I’ve been listening to Pink Floyd constantly since his passing with everything running from Piper At the Gates of the Dawn to The Division Bell, and beyond with David Gilmour’s latest release, On An Island. The album titles run true, even today. Wish you were here Rick, we’ll all see you on the dark side of the moon. Your legacy is rememembered in the hearts and memories of those that listen.

Arvin | 9/22/2008, 11:29 am EST

im speechless.Pink Floyd is such an important band for me and i always considered Richard Wright to be a brilliant musician. Without him Pink Floyd wouldn’t be Pink Floyd. Very sad. R.I.P. Richard Wright, and thanks for all the wonderful music you helped create in your life……

Strider | 9/22/2008, 7:25 pm EST

The music will live on in us forever but never again will there be the joy of anything new or something played live.
My heart goes out to all, his family, friends and band mates, but especially to all of us touched by his music.
I’m gob-smacked

Ian C. Thomas | 9/23/2008, 1:04 am EST

Rick Wright was a brilliant musician and one of the main attractions of Pink Floyd for me – his contributions expanded their musical “vocabulary” and gave the sound cohesion. That Wright/Gilmour interplay is pure magic! I still play Wright’s solo album “Wet Dream” a lot while painting and remember hearing Zee back on Billy Pinell’s album show here in Melbourne, when that came out. Wright made keyboards cool to me, to the extent that I was happy to play them in bands myself over other instruments. He was severely underrated as a musician, a songwriter, vocalist and all round decent human being. Alan Parsons recently said “Rick was to Pink Floyd what George Harrison was to The Beatles.” Very sadly missed.

E.Curry | 9/23/2008, 9:08 pm EST

I started Listening to Pink Floyd in 1976 when i was 6 years old. I grew up at 8 watching Live at Pompeii and fantasizing, and listening to everthing the Floyd Did. Davig Gilmour got me interested in Playing Guitar, For which i based my style after but Richard Wright burned into me the need and the essence of an oversound, Keyboards and piano, or a Hammond organ in the mix. I was trully devestated by the news of his passing, and will be for many months, or years, who knows. But the music is still always there to comfort, inspire, shape or ship the bad mood you are in out and a slice or tranquility that only the Floyd can deliver in. He was a musical genious, and his and Gilmours singing together are hauntign to me. Perfect to sooth the soul in need. Rip Richard. I hope Rolling Stone Mag Dedicates next months cover to you also. You deserved it. God Bless his family, and always remember the quiet man, who never wanted to be a showman who helped drive a band of 4 musicians who never wanted to be in the spotlight to unbelievable feats. God bless you, and god bles them all. You will be missed by more people than youre humbles self could possibly imagine. I amone of millions who are hurting now knowing of this great loss. You will be remembered forever.
Thank you richard Wright for giving us so many sounds from the soul. You were blessed, adn yet so humble and gentle. And gentlemans man and yet such an amazing musician. Everone buy his record Broken China for his families support to show the care and love for the man, if you do not have it already.
Ecurry. Fl, USa.

djowens | 9/25/2008, 8:22 pm EST

Damn, I’ve just been told about the sad loss to all. Where have i been? My thoughts go to the Wright family, the Pink Floyd and everyone connected to Rich.

I will sadly miss his light handed, delicate touch on the piano combined with his sublime at times non intrusive atmospheric keyboard/synth work.

In addition, his airy vocals must have been a joy to work with and his lead vocal on Wearing The Inside Out encapsulates his warm and clear tone as a vocalist. (All in all we all have much to learn).

There will never be a better synth intro/finally than Shine On and on that note his musical input will Shine On long after we are all but grains in the sand.

Sadly, there are many great musicians who have passed away but surely Rich will make sure they have a Great Gig In The Sky!

Shine On and On

Lucas | 9/29/2008, 1:32 pm EST

Only two musicians have ever “touched my soul” with their music. Richard Wright and David Gilmour. While Rick was never given the accolades he deserved, his contribution to the Floyd sound was immeasurable. Rick gave Floyd such depth and feeling and no one else could fill those shoes.

You made an amazing contribution to music and personally enriched my life. So even though we never met I want to thank you for what you gave me and the rest of your fans, a legacy of music that continues to reach people on a deep level even 40 years after it was written.

Thank you Rick.

Nightman | 9/30/2008, 6:42 pm EST

Pink Floyd = Waters + Gilmour + Wright + Mason, no one can or will replace anyone of them, I think one of the most reasons this band made all this success was the harmony between the four of them the extraordinary talent all of them have, It’s really difficult to describe how this band is? in few words. but what I really wanna say is that Richard Wrights contributions to this band were not less than those of Gilmour Or waters but sometimes may be more and this is quite clear in most of their heavy plays where you will always notice the heavy backgound music packed by Wright I think Wright did not earn much succes as Waters or Gilmour have cause only he didn’t get their chance and no one can deny that he was the shinning member of this band during sixties and seventies, I liked his style very much and I’ll miss him very much. I even can’t imagine watching the band performing again without him.

R.I.P. Mr. Richard Wright.A sad day for all.I felt I knew you by listening to and learning to play your music.Who in The Floyd brought diminished chords, major 7ths, Minor alt. 7ths, pedal tones etc. ?
You did ! and made jazz and classical ideas mainstream to the FM and stadium crowd.
My first acid trip was spent listening to Atom heart mother and that Em/ Am/ G /Bm/ A flat minor /B flat/ E flat/ A m/ B7 sequence is “very Rick” :-)
Rest in Peace and I’ll see you on the dark side of the moon. Shine on at the great gig in the sky.
Your music will live on….

Rena | 9/30/2008, 10:08 pm EST

It’s been well over a week and I still can’t seem to wrap my brain around the fact that this brilliant musician has left this world. Pink Floyd is my favourite band and Richard Wright and Syd Barrett were my most admired members. Richard had given PF it’s ethereal/atmospheric elements that it needed to become the super group that it became. His organ work in the early years are what really made me take deep interest in the band in the first place. I am heartbroken that there will never again be a live performance by this very gifted man, nor that I ever had the chance to see or meet him. Such a shocking, terrible loss.

R.I.P. Richard Wright | 10/18/2008, 5:21 am EST

I received something for Christmas that brought the memories back to my head… It was the David Gilmour´s newest tour in DVD and Rick was there. Damn! I can´t believe a musician as good as Rick left us in 2008. Why don´t all of those singers such as Britney Spears, Cristina Aguilera and Shakira dissapear from this world instead of Richard? Life is not fair!
Anyway….. Richard thank you for your fantastic contribution to the band… wish you were here so we can go together to kill all that crap of music we have these days on air!

Love,

Alex
