Despite Short Sales Week, Metallica’s “Death Magnetic” Expected to Sell 500K

9/15/08, 9:25 am EST

Metallica’s Death Magnetic is on pace to sell about 500,000 copies in the U.S. despite its release late in the week last Friday. Globally, the album is already dominating charts, with one report saying Death Magnetic sold more albums in Norway in one day than U2’s last album sold in a week. Here in the states, Death Magnetic’s sales numbers were perhaps aided on Friday by emo clothing store Hot Topic, who were selling the album for only $5 on its release day. The half-million copies sold falls within the range of the first week sales for previous Metallica albums. The band’s Load in 1996 enjoyed the best debut, selling 680,000 in its first week. Death Magnetic will likely improve on the numbers of the band’s last album, as St. Anger only sold about 363,000 in a similarly-shortened week.

No, I meant CAN. Not a typo.

One of the most overrated bands ever.

The leaked album actually promoted itself in cyberspace. The album is so good even most downloaders professed to buy the physical CD. This only means that you can’t loose in this age of the internet if you got a good album. The listeners still can’t envision on how metallica can actually play the new tracks LIVE. How about we suggest Metallica play the whole album LIVE in one of their future concerts, in order, track per track. They will get new converts doing this.

Flying Spaghetti Monster | 9/15/2008, 2:34 pm EST

Man, the new Jonas Brothers CD kicks ass!

packaging | 9/15/2008, 5:12 pm EST

The packaging helped too…very smart idea to get the artist for coca-cola and other “iconic” and “branded” products to come up with something that people will want for the artwork too…thats the way it should be! Get the album, pop it in, and look at the artwork while taking it all in!

Death Magnetic Rocks | 9/15/2008, 11:45 pm EST

Pure and simple, this album kicks some butt. I love it, awesome riffs, superspeed jams, crunchy chords…”We’ll never stop, we’ll never quit, cuz we’re Metallica”
I downloaded mine from Metallica.com

Cliff | 9/16/2008, 12:42 am EST

Their best album since “…And Justice For All”, but a shadow of the greatness that was “Ride the Lightening”, or “Master of Puppets”.

ThankRick | 9/16/2008, 12:49 am EST

Rick Rubin could make the effin’ Jonas Brothers rock. Metallica owes him a serious debt of gratitude. Now if only he could get Black Sabbath back into the studio…..

Metallifan | 9/16/2008, 10:04 am EST

who cares is an idiot!

Vetis | 9/16/2008, 10:51 am EST

Just seen them play this stuff live at the 02. No need for producing or tricks in the studio – Metallica do what they do best; live shows and the album sounds flat in comparison now.

Fedefox | 9/16/2008, 12:23 pm EST

Great Album!!! somebody said very bravely it’s a combination of Master and Ride the Lightning… well, as time goes by that theory MAYBE will be true… for now I can only say it’s the best album since Justice for all…. Old school fans are thankful and we Knew Metallica still had it…. for the Metallica “hatters” created by Load, Reload and St. Anger…. Well, there u have it, respect!!!! THEY’RE BACK!!!!!

brian | 9/16/2008, 4:43 pm EST

compare the opening guitar on the day that never comes to Joe Satriani’s Chord’s of Life, same song; cant believe they would steal.

sconi | 9/20/2008, 1:28 am EST

i don’t know why peeps bash for a band changing , get over it , not all of us are stuck in the 80s with our big hair and parachute pants ! change is a necessity of life, lead follow or get out of the F ing way! here comes Metallica !!!! And yes Death Magnetic kicks St Angers Ass!

Tay Tay | 9/22/2008, 12:33 pm EST

I am so tired of the “Old Metallica vs. New Metallica” arguments. IMHO, Tallica is just a good band. Period. Sure they’ve had their off moments – I’ve lived a long time and had mine too. All I know is I was so excited to hear this CD my hands were shaking while I was opening it. AND I am very happy to be taking my 12 year old son to see their 1st concert in Glendale, AZ!

rob | 9/22/2008, 7:24 pm EST

the best album on the planet, its long but it seems in no time its over.quit comparing to old stuff, cause its 2008 and this is metal!!!now we know the kings have there crown back!

yomama | 9/25/2008, 8:47 pm EST

mabye the reason they didn’t get that much sales was becasue it was leaked on the internet at least 1week and 1/2 befor it came out lol

hello | 10/18/2008, 2:10 am EST

I bought the album and love it!

Metallica is back with a vengeance!

Then again, they never really left.

VladaVB92 | 10/28/2008, 5:24 pm EST

Finally soething that improve their name. After average load, reload and bad st anger death magnetic is refreshment from their side….Metallica kick your ass

IcedEarthMetallicaDreamShow | 11/9/2008, 9:46 pm EST

This album is the best thing they came out with since And Justice For All. I liked (Metallica/Black)but this is far better than it. It’s like they found some old written tabs from the 80’s they had lost behind a couch and recorded them. Because after the last 3 excuses for Metal they came out with, it’s almost impossible to believe this is new. LoL
They really did the right thing getting rid of Bob (Sell Your Soul For Me and MTV) Rock and bringing in Rick and Rob.
Metallica is finally BACK!

Totsy | 11/23/2008, 11:50 am EST
