Weekend Rock List: Crime Songs

9/12/08, 4:44 pm EST

Photo: Rose/Retna

It was a busy week on the crime front, as Kanye West was arrested in Los Angeles, R.E.M. had their signature guitar stolen, torrent operators were sentenced and some Canadian dude assaulted Noel Gallagher on stage. For all the felons out there, this weekend’s Rock List is dedicated to crime. Whether they are felonies or misdemeanors, tell us your favorite songs about breaking the law, and on Monday we’ll count up the votes and reveal the winners. Until then, stay out of trouble, and check out our picks:

Jane’s Addiction – “Been Caught Stealing”
Snoop Dogg – “Murder Was The Case”
The Clash – “I Fought The Law”
Notorious B.I.G. – “Ten Crack Commandements”
The Beastie Boys – “Looking Down the Barrel Of a Gun”

I Fought The Law by The Dead Kennedys because theirs beats the Clash’s

Folsom Prison Blues by do I even have to tell you it’s Johny Cash?

Smokin’ In The Boy’s Room by Brownsville Station

Whipping Post by the Allman Brothers

and I’m going out on a limb to say “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” is a crime song because it’s not much of a stretch to figure the girl is dead at the end of the song. It was Leadbelly, after all.

F*&^ The Police by Ice-T

Folsom Prison Blues – Johnny Cash: He has million other songs that fits in this category. Quite a few of them are better, but this song is iconic.

15 – Rilo Kiley: Jenny Lewis makes statutory rape sound sexy and dangerous with this song.

Time Of The Preacher – Willie Nelson or Johnny Cash w/an all-star grunge band: This song is so cool and violent. It actually inspired a comic book.

Through The Morning, Through The Night – Alison Krauss & Robert Plant: Alison never sounded this cold blooded before she sang this murder ballad with a sexual twist.

You Oughta Know – Alanis Morissette: Indecent exposure and lewd act performed in public are just some of the crimes commited in this classic song.

“Alison” by Elvis Costello, a song which has been misinterpreted for years as a pretty love song. Grab your lyric sheet and follow along:

Jealous ex learns former beau is now married (”I see you’ve gotta husband now/ did he leave your fingers lying in the wedding cake?”)

becomes sexually jealous (how easy was it for him “to take off that party dress?”)

realizes that she can’t be for him and he can’t be for her (”I can’t stand to see you this way.”)

And so he shoots and kills her. (”My aim is true.”)

An ingenious murder ballad wrapped up as a cozy fuzzy homecoming dance. Does that not deserve attention in this category!

Whether or not you like hip-hop this is just a great song. No samples, just an awesome backing track and a great rap arrangement.

Ice-T–6 in tha Morning

The lineage of so-called “crime songs” by NWA such as “One Less Bitch” and “Fuck tha Police” can be traced directly to this classic song from the “Rhyme Pays” album, which is a sorely underrated hip-hop classic.
