Every year, the Video Music Awards makes Rock Daily more and more nostalgic for the old, weird MTV. Case in point: back in 1995, MTV launched an extremely short-lived show called “Superock.” It aired Saturday nights at Midnight and was essentially a video show (focusing a lot on alt-rock and the early days of alt-metal) interspersed with interview segments. The whole thing was hosted by Jackie Farry, who originally made a name for herself as Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love’s nanny. The surreal sit down with the Beastie Boys above is emblematic of MTV in the mid-’90s: a dressed-down band (the Beasties in parkas and skullies) in an unusual location (floating on a barge in Amsterdam) talking about nonsense (strange fashion stories, fake break dancing movies). It’s all brought together by Rancid videos and ads for Cinn-A-Burst. Even though it had a late time slot, it’s still relatively amazing this ever aired on television. Click above for a full-tilt flashback to the post-grunge years, and follow the jump for the second part of the interview.
