GOP’s Use of “Right Now” Leads to Sammy Hagar-Eddie Van Halen Phone Tag

Days before Heart served the GOP campaign with a cease-and-desist letter for playing their 1977 hit “Barracuda” to introduce VP pick Sarah Palin (high school alias: “Sarah Barracuda”) at the August 31st Republican convention,
Van Halen sounded off against McCain and Co. for blasting their tune “Right Now” at a rally in Dayton, Ohio. “Permission was not sought or granted nor would it have been given [to use the song],” Alex and Eddie Van Halen said in a statement. But not every VH member agreed.

“I got goosebumps from it — my fur went up,” says the band’s ex-frontman, Sammy Hagar, who co-wrote and sang the song — and said he’d be “just as happy” if Obama played it. “I was honored that a potential president of the United States used those words in a positive sense, like, ‘We gotta act now!’ ”

Hagar, who’s tight-lipped on his presidential endorsement (”I vote for the man, not the party,” he says) heard that McCain used the tune via a deluge of phone calls. “I got calls from relatives, friends, doctors, lawyers… everyone thought it was so cool,” he says. “Then I started getting excited. Those words are an old Zen philosophy — it’s totally cool that they’re timeless.” Even former bandmate Eddie rang Hagar up.

“I got a message on my cell phone and it was Eddie’s voice,” Hagar recalls. “He goes, ‘Sam? This don’t sound like you. I got the wrong number.’ And he hangs up! So I hit redial. He didn’t answer, but I left a message: ‘Ed, it’s me. If you would like to talk about the ‘Right Now’ situation I’d love to speak to you about it.’ ”

The two never connected, which raises some lingering questions. “Why didn’t [Van Halen] say no when Pepsi Cola gave us a million dollars to use the song in a Pepsi Light commercial?” asks Hagar. “That’s when you say no. That isn’t the message of this song.” But when a potential future president is using it to bring a message to the world, he says, “I’m going, ‘Hell, yes!’”

If McCain had paid Van Halen a million dollars, then Eddie Van Halen might have had something else to say about it.

Gosh, that was obvious.

bayliss | 9/12/2008, 6:31 pm EST

sammy I think you are worth more than the VH camp….do you need more $ ?

Diamond Dave | 9/12/2008, 6:44 pm EST

Sammy has the right attitude about this. Must be all the tequila.

RH- | 9/12/2008, 7:28 pm EST

Look at the official VH website. They don’t even have pictures of the Sammy era stuff. It’s kinda like they want to forget that era.
They have DLR back. I just don’t think they want any attention on the music they made with Sammy. It don’t matter if it is someone political using the song, or anyone else.
If someone wanted to use a song they recorded with DLR and the price was right, they would allow it!

Michael Anthony | 9/12/2008, 7:28 pm EST

Anyone that votes for John McCain doesn’t care about the future of this country. Fact.

Greg | 9/12/2008, 7:31 pm EST

Right on sam

Bill | 9/12/2008, 7:33 pm EST

I think Heart’s reaction was sad, and Hagar’s was appropriate. And I really love Ann and Nancy Wilson. I just think they should grow a sense of humor about things like this.

One more disclaimer: I am not voting for McCain or Obama. Going third party.

Gary Cherone | 9/12/2008, 7:55 pm EST

Might as well use Right Now…nobody is going to use songs from my album.

JB | 9/12/2008, 8:11 pm EST

I see Sammy’s point, that is, if you think the GOP message is actually a positive one. Not that Sammy would know.

Eddie and Alex must know the GOP message. Thus their appropriate response.

Obama ain’t liberal enough!

Greg | 9/12/2008, 8:25 pm EST

Hagar is a punkass tool!

Rick | 9/12/2008, 8:37 pm EST

Right on, Sammy. The person, not the party.

Hey, M.A. I care about the future of this country AND I’m voting for McCain. Nobama would be a total disaster.

Turd Burglar | 9/12/2008, 9:16 pm EST

Hey, we need more people like Sammy. Its very Dudian of him. Fuck it and the Eagles still suck.

Dors | 9/12/2008, 9:21 pm EST

Adolph | 9/12/2008, 9:49 pm EST

Notice –this is Sammy Hagar!!! no one from the real Van Halen suffers from mental retardation like Sammy

thejimmyhat | 9/13/2008, 12:17 am EST

this article is a great step for rolling stone. i was surprised because it used the word “McCain” without using the word “dumbass.” they should learn to not be liberally biased because it would help their desperately suffering sales. i’m voting for mccain because obama is obviously lying about his economic intentions… i mean tax cuts? while spending hundreds of billions of new dollars while we’re already in serious debt??? who is he kidding, he reminds a lot of dukakis… who sucked

joe dirt | 9/13/2008, 12:48 am EST

Brian Gallagher | 9/13/2008, 3:55 pm EST

A lot of you folks are not voting for Obama. Why? Because he`s black? No because he is smarter than you. America as I knew her is gone.McCcain wants more war and so do the americans who will vote this fuck stick in. Nice knowing ya dip shits.

Factcheck | 9/13/2008, 3:57 pm EST

Actually, jimmyhat, every independent analysis shows that McCain will cut more taxes…just less to the middle class. Obama’s cutting taxes for the middle class 3x as much as McCain. He’s raising taxes on people who make more than 250k. These are the people who will benefit most from McCain’s tax cuts. Also, McCain will run up the deficit more than Obama…to the tune of $9 trillion. Perhaps you should do some homework before you mouth off.

thejimmyhat | 9/13/2008, 12:17 am EST

Vote Obama!

mcstansical | 9/13/2008, 4:46 pm EST

Sammy is a sharp dude. He got shafted by VH to bring the “carnival barker” Roth back. The Van Halens are probably Obama supporters to show you where their heads at. Oh sorry… RS magazine also thinks Obama is the Messiah.

Rob | 9/13/2008, 4:54 pm EST

Osama.Obama whats the dif?

Brian | 9/13/2008, 6:14 pm EST

Rick, “Nobama” would be a total disaster? How the fk do YOU know?! McCain is almost a carbon-copy of Bush and he is and has MADE this country a total disaster! And you want to vote for more of that?! Clueless! Some people are so dumb! Blind and ignorant too.. This country is in peril right now! -Obama may not be the Messiah but he can’t do any worse than what Bush has done and what his twin will do….

melt | 9/13/2008, 7:34 pm EST

Sammy rocks!

Palin's baby-daddy | 9/13/2008, 8:12 pm EST

Very telling comments, much the same as on every single forum on the internet….all of the McCain supporters support him for pathetic reasons….”Palin is hot, she’s got my vote”, “Obama is promising too much”, “I heard Obama doesn’t believe in God”, “McCain is really going to go against his party and make changes”, “Palin has a lot of experience, she says she’s ready”…..sad… McCain is an okay guy himself….but a) won’t change much and b) chose a JOKE of a running mate simply to gain some women and bible-thumper votes. She’s done one interview and proved to be completely incompetent and ignorant

Edward Van Halen | 9/13/2008, 8:24 pm EST

after a few bottles of schmokin loon….Sarah kinda looks like Valerie…hic….Fuck it …use my song….hic

John Avery | 9/13/2008, 8:55 pm EST

At least the Van Halen’s have a beef, unlike Heart, who have admitted that they ripped off the riff of Barracuda from Led Zeppelin.

I think Sammy is being very sensible.

Brandon | 9/14/2008, 12:11 am EST

Sammy is right. EVH does not have the balls to talk to Sammy.
The Red Rocker is a true American.
I cancelled my subscription to RS a long time ago to buy more Cabo Wabo.
It takes a rebel of a rocker to be a republican.
Their magazine sucks.

MC | 9/14/2008, 1:37 am EST

What a bunch of blinded liberals. It’s funny really. Obama has done NOTHING. He will promise the world like most Democrats and blow smoke up your a#s. Obama will talk about what he will do and McCain will DO what needs to be DONE.

ILuvC1assicRokYo | 9/14/2008, 4:12 am EST

Hmm, it’s funny that I have always hated Van Halen but not till now have I had a real reason to feel so.
oh wait, their music is also terrible.

IloveClassicRock | 9/14/2008, 4:16 am EST

Heart earns major “awesome points” from me.
who wouldn’t be upset by someone using one’s own song for something one does not at all believe in?

IloveClassicRock | 9/14/2008, 4:28 am EST

also:
YES! Finally a tangible reason for my hating Van Halen! –Besides of course, that I totally despise and fail to find any trace of depth musically/lyrically to their songs :)

Anonymous | 9/14/2008, 5:15 am EST

If by do what needs to be done you mean run this country further into the gutter, then I agree with you MC.

Alex | 9/14/2008, 5:59 am EST

How does anyone like MC say democrats don’t do anything when the last time a Democrat was in office (right before GWB) the United States doing great economically (economic surplus), wasn’t fighting in Vietnam part 2 (Iraq), and didn’t owe China trillions of dollars.
Republicans running our country for 8 yrs were the ones blowing smoke up your and my asses.

Republican Rock? | 9/14/2008, 6:33 am EST

Rock and roll for Republicans is silly. Everything most rock songs sing about or stand for is against
the Republican….war-money-power mentality. Let THEM have COUNTRY….it fits em.

MikeyB | 9/14/2008, 10:04 am EST

Annual Middle class income is down $2000 since Bush took over, it went up $7000 under Clinton.

Bush & the Repubs took a budget surplus and created a national debt that will cost every man, woman and child in the U.S. $30,000 to pay back. This past year the US dollar was weaker than the Canadian dollar. 7 years of war, Bin Laden still free, Job losses, foreclosures due to banking de-regulation, illegal spying, torture, Katrina, Exxon enjoying RECORD PROFITS.

McSame has voted with Bush 90% of the time. We deserve more than a 10% change.

lck5150 | 9/14/2008, 10:53 am EST

Sammy received 80 million reasons to want McCain to use the song earlier this year.

Dante | 9/14/2008, 11:40 am EST

You whiny liberals sound like a bunch of spoiled children rebelling against your parents. Grow up, get a real job, pull up your pants and realize the Democratic idea to suckle everyone from cradle to grave is, at the least, ineffective, and ultimately, the fertile soil in which totalitarianism takes root.
(BTW, Sammy makes more sense than any other musician I’ve heard during this campaign.)

MC | 9/14/2008, 12:35 pm EST

Bush sucks. Yes, we can all agree on that. However, McCain is not “just like Bush” as close-minded and those who need a simple by the numbers answer to cling to.

We are in a war against terrorists. We can sit back and HOPE that nothing happens, or we can protect our interests overseas before we are fighting the fight in the streets of the US.

Clinton did nothing for 8 years except piss on our legs and tell us it’s raining. And I used to be a supporter of his. He is/was an amazing speaker. Just because someone can talk you into believing everything is right doesn’t mean it is. That is what concerns me about Obama. He is SO much more eloquent than Bush and McCain that people are buying into him primarily for that reason alone. He still has not done anything to merit him being President. How bad is it when your vice president made the statement that the Presidency is not a place for on the job training?

I don’t want the US to turn into a place where our buses and trains are getting blown up from terrorists. Although fighting is not the thing that anyone WANTS to do, what are the options? Pull the troops out before the area is stabilized and you can ensure that things will get much worse. Not just for the Iraqis, but also for the USA.

No matter what you think, the terrorists will never rest until we are wiped out. You can not bargain with them and they will not stop. That is their belief system. If you want to just blindly think it will get better without sacrifice, you are unfortunately wrong.

Janet | 9/14/2008, 2:25 pm EST

What a bunch of “controversy” as Prince would say…Sammy as a hard core Republican??? And I am a 54 year old porn star. Not in this life. Hell, he live in the uber-rich liberal bastion of Marin County and does music for free. Now that ain’t Republican. And listen to his Cabo Wabo Happy Hour on Redrocker.com – he is a self-described redneck “liberal”. That works for me. I love country music and I love Sammy.

Hey Alex | 9/14/2008, 3:13 pm EST

Yes, Bin Laden is still on the loose, but Clinton had the chance to take him out and didn’t.

I’m sure Obama would find him. He’d have a roundtable and offer a truce to him and apologize for all of America’s wrongdoings. Give me a break. Under Clinton things were good, but that was in spite of him and not because of him. After 9/11, of COURSE things would get worse in this country. And it would happen with ANYONE in office.

I’m not a Bush fan, but at least he stood up to the terrorists. Gore and now Obama would likely just say “Sorry” to them and take the victim mentality (… was there something we did that made them attack us?).

I don’t support every thing this administration does, nor am I steadfast Republican. There is no party or person that will do everything that everyone needs. However, we need to navigate through to the end of this war in an appropriate manner to ensure that we accomplish our objectives while bringing our troops home. Just saying we’re bringing the troops home immediately will be a nightmare.

The entire region will become COMPLETELY unstable and the attacks on our soil will commence.

I wonder who wants McCain in office less, most of the liberals who post here or Osama Bin Laden himself? The terrorists know McCain will continue to come after them. It will be a terrorist holiday if Obama is voted in…

Adam | 9/14/2008, 7:57 pm EST

Its funny how the GOP just knows that Obama will be a disaster and that he’s “Lying” about tax cuts – as opposed to the verified lies of the current GOP leaders. Obama, give him a chance. You had yours, 8 years of lying and death and debt.

Frank Davis | 9/14/2008, 11:10 pm EST

“Yes, we can all agree on that.”

No, “we” can’t. Don’t speak for me and don’t assume your naive BDS affects more than the rabid liberal looney left.

Brian Gallagher | 9/15/2008, 12:18 am EST

to hey alex: If Clinton would have taken out Bin Laden he would have also killed a few innocent dignataries with him and some innocent people too. Why don`t you research before you puke up your fox news info. Then again you right wing douche bags don`t do book learning. If you want more war vote for Mcinsane. Proves my theory that most of america is filled with retards.

Scott | 9/15/2008, 5:25 am EST

Ralph Nader should start playing the whole dam VH catalogue then!!! If all these left leaning progessive rock stars like rage against the machine are so “progressive” and inspired by change why don’t they stop basking in the corrupt 2 party system and actually start using there jam sessions to help inspire something revolutionary…

Scott | 9/15/2008, 8:33 am EST

“Right Now” used to remind of Cabo, chicks gone wild, and margaritas…now the song is just going to depress me when Obama loses the election this november…that infamous piano intro will ring just plain dire.

Paul | 9/15/2008, 10:27 am EST

Wow. I already knew Haggar was an idiot…I just didn’t realize how much of one. Is there any grey matter between your ears, Sam?

blogbot 3000 | 9/15/2008, 10:30 am EST

You’re all missing the point. Sammy is merely saying he appreciates having a major party candidate use the song and understand that the song is about taking action now. If Obama had grabbed it first, I think he’d be just as happy. Now, that may be misguided, in that maybe you SHOULD care about what the candidate will actually DO, but for Sammy, that’s beside the point.

By the way, Dave, in his earlier form, was great for VH (not so much so now.) Sammy, in his time, was great for VH. They’re simply not the same and have different merits. Everybody get the hell over it.

Janet | 9/15/2008, 10:39 am EST

People need to stop being depressed and paranoid and listen to the message. The song Right Now is about change, the Republicans are clearly not about change. Once again, the stole the idea from the Democrats. Get a grip, get a clue and think about whether really you or anyone you know is better off today than you were 8 years ago. I truly doubt it unless you are a rich rockstar, businessman like Sammy Hagar. And if you really want to figure out where he stands, just read about his foundations and listen to him speak on the available video/audio selections. Also know that he has lived in the Bay Area around Marin County for over 40 years and most of us are “bleeding heart liberals” so get over it.

Janet | 9/15/2008, 11:01 am EST

Thank you blogbot 3000, my sentiments exactly. Sammy is not stupid, he is just being diplomatic. And while all of us opinionated assholes my not agree with his tactic to not alienate you all, it works for him to keep his fans believing in what’s right. Oh, and if being “stupid” is being rich and famous and taking care of kids around the world, then I will take his kind of stupidity any day over all you all who are criticizing him. Truly, get a life!

Eric F. Scholl | 9/15/2008, 12:25 pm EST

Hagar hit it on the head.

It’s not about McCain or Obama, it’s about the fact that change is needed…and no matter who gets elected, this country is in dire need of change (thanks to its current so-called leadership).

As the lyrics say:
“Its your tomorrow, Right now”

Dig it?

Jungleland | 9/16/2008, 11:20 am EST

Politics: Barr > McCain > Obama

Van Halen: Dave > Sammy > Extreme dude

But Sammy gets cooler every day and he is not another blind liberal like most musicians.

Steve | 9/16/2008, 4:19 pm EST

Right now Iraq has weapons of mass destruction. Right now there is a direct link between Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda. Right now Valeri Plame is being outed as a CIA operative. Right now Larry Craig is tapping his foot in an airport washroom somewhere. Right now a “hockey mom” is getting ready to become the next Vice President and god forbid the next President. Right now McCain is planning to stay in Iraq for the next hundred years and right now America is completley and utterly clueless.

RICKTHEROCKER49 | 9/16/2008, 7:54 pm EST

SAMMY AS ALWAYS THINKS BEFORE HE SPEAKS AND SPEAKS FROM THE HEART, NOT A CRACK PIPE LIKE EVH,EDDIE PULL YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR GLASS BOWEL, SAMMY WAS THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN TO VH AND WILL CONTINUE TO MAKE KICK YOUR ASS MUSIC FOR EVERYONE………

scotthotter | 9/17/2008, 5:44 pm EST

Its amazing how whacked out this story gets with every post…we need more than a freekin song to change any ones mind on the direction this country is going…i have an idea, the band AC DC made such a song remember “Highway2 Hell” thats exactly what we all should be thinking…
Hey Iloveclassicrock
I don’t think you would know good music if it bit your head off? which VH music does…rock on!

Winter | 10/9/2008, 11:58 am EST

I agree with Hagar. What is wrong with putting your music out there? It is the audience that gets to determine their meaning, not the artist’s. For my last cd White God Machine, I could not care less who uses it unless it is for a bad purpose. Obama, McCain, all is good. I represent Independant America.

Fatmont | 10/9/2008, 4:05 pm EST

I understand John McCain originally wanted to use Running With The Devil….but feared Sarah Palin would get upset. You don’t want to upset a hockey mom. They are like Bulldogs…..except their nuts hang lower.

Kliff | 10/9/2008, 5:38 pm EST

Sammy obviously is either not being honest or has had his head in a tequila bottle for the past 8 years.

Mark | 8/2/2009, 12:15 pm EST

Sammy Hagar is/has been a very vocal Republican for quite some time. The only reason for his caveat about “being undecided” on his choice for POTUS was his desire to sell units of music. Period. Hagar has some okay music, but he is kind of a running joke. Like Ted Nugent with a tan.
