Janet Jackson Opens Rock Witchu Tour With Three Decades of Hits, Video Duets and Pyro

According to Janet Jackson, the Rock Witchu tour — her first in seven years — features a set list that was directly influenced by her fans. (The singer set up a phone line to take song requests in advance.) As a result, last night’s Vancouver kick-off covered nearly three decades of music, ranging from tracks recorded in her mid-teens (”Say You Do,” “Don’t Stand Another Chance”) to audience faves (”Escapade,” “Rhythm Nation”) to her newest singles (”Rock With U,” “LUV”).

As far as theatrics, Jackson brought her usual bag of tricks: Being overcome by (possibly real) tears during a burst of fan-thusiasm? Check. Picking a guy out of the audience to incorporate into her sadomasochistic number? Double check. She got out a bondage swing and some floggers for her latest disc’s title track, “Discipline.” (Check out photos from the show here.)

The stage featured layers of interwoven steel with a huge U-shaped extension allowing Janet to strut nearly halfway across the stadium floor. Costume changes brought the glam — ranging from a skin-tight gold lamé bodysuit (during opening track “The Pleasure Principle”) to a Hollywood-esque flowing red gown for the slow jams — but it did seem clear that Jackson, along with her nine dancers and minimalist band, put together a show that was less extravagant in terms of outfits and stage props, attempting instead to bring the bang with pyro and mini-explosions.

Three large screens offered close-up shots throughout the two hour and 20 minute set, as well as pre-recorded footage allowing “duets” with Nelly (”Call On Me”) and Dave Navarro (”Black Cat”). The show’s sole bizarre element was the inclusion of nearly nonsensical video vignettes designed to create a space-age good vs. evil battle: the “evil” Jackson sonically emulating Gollum from Lord of the Rings while the “good” Janet appeared in a white haze, eerily resembling the sunshine from the Teletubbies. While the onscreen Janets were confounding, the real-live Jackson was assured as she powered through the tightly choreographed 37-song set. She may have sang along to backing tracks, but she didn’t lip-synch.

Set List:

“Pleasure Principle”
“Control”
“What Have You Done For Me Lately”
“Feedback”
“U Want This”
“Alright”
“Miss You Much”
“Never Letchu Go”

I suck! Everyone who pays for a ticket for my show is a FOOL.

David | 9/11/2008, 3:35 pm EST

The set list here is missing “Feedback” which should appear as the 4th song in the show.

Gwen | 9/11/2008, 3:47 pm EST

Why can’t she come to Europe?

To the person who posted before me: why spend time on an artist you don’t like?

B | 9/11/2008, 3:56 pm EST

She is coming to Europe. It’s been confirmed by her choreographer.

MJ | 9/11/2008, 4:25 pm EST

Way to go Janet! I can’t wait to see this show

tea | 9/11/2008, 4:47 pm EST

I love Janet, but I wish she’d break out of her box. The cds are always the same with the little spoken tracks in between. Stop it already. She’s just SO much better than a repeat artist. And the tour sounds the same too with grabbing a guy from the audience, tired sexual innuendo and S&M schtick. ugh

Jordan | 9/11/2008, 4:47 pm EST

Freaking awesome set list, so much better than the fake one that was posted online, apparently in Janet’s handwriting on notebook paper. Really hope to make it, though I am going to Madge and don’t know if I can afford both right now!

Greg | 9/11/2008, 5:30 pm EST

GREAT SET LIST! CAN’T WAIT TO SEE HER AT MSG!!!

Loren | 9/11/2008, 6:51 pm EST

Cara | 9/11/2008, 11:47 pm EST

I swear some of you who come here to just hate are idiots! She received great reviews from her tour. I’m so proud of Janet. 2008-09 is your year!

Djay | 9/12/2008, 10:31 am EST

This tour is like “20 Y.O.” and doesnt really push “Dicipline”. The “Pleasure Principle” bad opening choice and that mohawk afro-mullet is so dated.

Dawo | 9/12/2008, 12:25 pm EST

SOOOOO Good to see JJ back on Stage:)

hope she tour in Europe:)

we wait 4 u JJ

IGGY | 9/13/2008, 12:42 pm EST

Just came home from the Bay Area Show in Oakland. SO AMAZING!!! I had to find the set list so I can make playlists for the friends who went. Thanks for the playlist. No lip-sinking,maybe a trak kicked in while she went off stage. We had box seats so it was hard to tell. Free beer though. All in all, awesome. Nelly was great too. I could go on and on…

raft3r | 9/14/2008, 5:05 am EST

TYNISHA | 9/14/2008, 3:31 pm EST

I just came from the Oakland show, that show was out of this world! I didn’t sit down at all. Janet is and always will be the best female performer that ever step on stage. I’m so glad I spent my money and would love to see her again. If i could i would pay to see the same show over and over again! I’ve loved Janet since I was a teenager, and now at the age of 30 the love for her is even stronger, she brought tears to my eyes and made me smile that teenage smile once again! I love you Janet you Rock!

Kim | 9/14/2008, 4:06 pm EST

This will be my 3rd time seeing Janet. She is fabulous and her shows are amazing! You know she works hard on them. You are missing out if you don’t see at least one show. And her setlist is sick! OMG I’ll be there all night! I can’t wait until Oct. 7th when she comes to Ft. Lauderdale, FL!

Stephen | 9/14/2008, 4:14 pm EST

Finally gonna catch “my girl” at Mohegan Sun!! FINALLY!! I know it’s gonna be an experience I’ll never forget. Bring it, Jan!! :o )

Janet The Bitch | 9/14/2008, 5:11 pm EST

for you all stupid fan of this ugly bitch, please wake up and see the truth that this tour is suck and not not even one date sold-out.

Mariah tour is really bored but it’s better than this janet’s fuck witchu tour

Nomi | 9/14/2008, 11:36 pm EST

I was at the Oakland show – and it was tough! The choreography, music, sets, graphics, costumes, etc. I certainly got my money’s worth. For those of you who feel compelled to critcize the show – I hope it was based on the fact that you actually ATTENDED the show in order to make such a critique. And if you did, that means you were willing to PAY to do so. You should be feeling really silly about now.

Mrs. KW | 9/15/2008, 4:02 am EST

To all the HATERS out there, hate all you want, you’re entitled to your opinion. However, was at the Oakland, Ca show. It was FABULOUS!! Loved the stage setting, her interaction with the crowd was great. GET READY TO ROCK!!You will have a Blast!

Preston | 9/15/2008, 1:23 pm EST

Loved the review on Janet Jackson’s concert. Janet will make you get up and dance, because many of my favorites are on her show. And she opened with Pleasure Principle–my favorite song by Control the day I first heard it in Dec. 1986! 7 months later it went top 10! And even putting the new songs from Discipline between her ‘86,’89, and ‘93 hits makes it even more funkier! Look out other cities and get ready to dance when my girl Janet hits your city! She’s going to tear up some stages this fall!!!!!!!

JJ | 9/15/2008, 2:52 pm EST

Does anyone know the website where you could purchase her programme for the concert?

JJ | 9/16/2008, 8:50 pm EST

Hey Oaklanders – How long was the opening act? What time did Janet take the stage?

Ray | 9/17/2008, 8:26 am EST

Wow!!! what a setlist man o man she took it back ” You Don’t Stand Another Chance” ,” Young Love” ? LOL. She never perform those songs before live I bet that is worth the price of the ticket alone. I can’t wait until she comes to DC. I will be there .

Ray | 9/17/2008, 8:29 am EST

Great list cant’t wait until she come to DC I will be right there!!. I see she took it back with ” Young Love”, You Do Not Stand Another Chance”. That’s the first time she ever performed those songs live in concert.

She canceled her Montreal show

June | 9/30/2008, 1:34 am EST

Oh no! I hope Janet’s OK!! I hope she comes to Boston on Wednesday!!!!

What happened to her? | 9/30/2008, 10:18 pm EST

It seems to me Janet has gotten fat. She appears to be busting at the seams with these outfits – not flattering nor is the hairstyle.

Ari | 10/1/2008, 11:56 pm EST

The show at Air Canada C. in Toronto was AMAIZING !!!!!!
I love her and i am a true fan so she can do no wrong :) :)
She is a good singer and preformer that is what matters not if she gained few pounds or not.
No one can come close to her when i comes to performances.
Janet U Rock :)

Wowzers | 10/17/2008, 8:13 pm EST

Janet was absolutely AMAZING in DC the other night (Wednesday). Absolutely FLAWLESS performance through the entire show.

The best part of course as always is when she teases an innocent man from the audience on stage lol!! The entire audience was cracking up!!

Rob | 10/20/2008, 10:57 am EST

Saw the show in D.C. It was just the best ever. I’m old school and those ticket prices are insane although I had good seats. I would have loved to have been on the floor. That’s were the real fun was.

Audrey | 10/22/2008, 4:55 pm EST

Did she come on stage at the appointed time or was there an initial band?

Gina | 11/3/2008, 1:34 pm EST

I was just at her MSG show this past weekend and OMG! OMG! OMG! she worked the stage! It was great to hear all her songs new & old – It was great to see her dancing because I love Janet’s moves! Me and this guy was both doing the dances to some of her songs lol it was great!!! I loved her costume changes she seemed very comfy with some of those outfits….too bad LL wasn’t there but his lost! The man she picked out the crowd was hilarious!!!! I couldn’t believe the stuff she was doing…she definitely did more with this guy than she did at other tours! but i definitely enjoyed the show – I hope they put it on DVD!

Anonymous | 4/11/2009, 2:05 pm EST

I saw this show in Houston,tx..and it was nothin less than fantastic!!..Janet has so many songs so the show got a lil draining at times…but it picked right back up within no time..The fact she perfomed songs she has never peformed made the show GREAT .

Mr. DeFoe | 6/21/2009, 2:32 am EST
