MTV and Mark Burnett Casting “Rock Band” Competition Show

9/10/08, 1:08 pm EST

With the release of Rock Band 2 quickly approaching, MTV and reality television producer Mark Burnett are banking that there’s a TV audience interested in watching bands faux-rock out on a competition show. According to a job posting on Craigslist, Burnett and MTV (whose gaming division produces Rock Band) are seeking “four people to form their own band and show us their stuff live on stage for the chance to win the Ultimate Rock Band Experience.” No other details of the show were revealed, but figure it’ll be like America’s Best Dance Crew but with plastic instruments and karaoke. Actual musical experience isn’t required, but contestants must be at least 18 years old, reside in the Southern California area and be “prepared to rock.”

…or MTV could go back to showing real musicians playing real instruments.

H. Bomb | 9/10/2008, 5:06 pm EST

They TRIED that, remember?

The most recent show with real musicians playing real instruments was a songwriting competition hosted by the highlight-happy Ryan Cabrera!

Real musicians playing real guitars
and playing original music? Now thats a concept.

H. Bomb | 9/11/2008, 1:07 am EST

Well, ultimately, the advertising dollars determine the best concepts! ;-)

Luna | 9/17/2008, 7:18 pm EST

Yeah, lets let corporations like Lehman Brothers, Freddie Mae, AIG,Morgan Stanley, determine what the best concept is. They know the scoop of real rock n roll.Kind of like cheering on someone who lip synchs.

Haha, I wonder what the “Ultimate Rock Band Experience” is.

JERK RAGS WON!!!! I was in the Audience it was soooo cool!
PEACE OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Were you there? | 11/8/2008, 7:19 pm EST

Obviously you weren’t there Joe Schmoe. Jerk Rags were one of the first to get voted off. Poor Mans Process won, and Scared Puppy got second. In my opinion, Scared Puppy should have won, but Poormans Process had people in the paid audience voting for them. That drummer from Scared Puppy completely rocked it.

snerdman17 | 11/14/2008, 5:11 am EST

Well it was a joke competition anyway, the band that won it had the level set at easy, and the band that came in second was on expert…. should at least take that into consideration, did you see the lead guitars screen!!! those buttons were flying down the screen… wrong band won….as usual for these types of shows…. doesnt matter how you play, just how many fans you bring along with you…

Piglet | 11/17/2008, 10:52 pm EST

Scared Puppy should have won. The lead singer was soooooo cute! :)

rockergirl83 | 11/19/2008, 3:24 pm EST

Were any of you REALLY there? Scared Puppy AND Poor Man’s Process BOTH played on HARD. I know guys from both of the bands and had you been there to see the full performance (not just the edited version) you would have gotten to see the awesome choreography that put Poor Man’s Process over the top and heard the crowd’s REAL reaction, not the one that they PRE RECORDED so that you could actually hear PMP (thats how loud the crowd got). Get your facts straight before you start posting things you OBVIOUSLY weren’t even there for. And for your information the bands were only allowed 5 guests per person who were NOT allowed to vote for ANY band.

A Rockband competition is quite possibly the worst thing I’ve ever heard. Doesn’t MTV stand for music television? News Flash: Pushing buttons on a plastic guitar and having your eyes dilate at the colors on the screen isn’t musical talent. Rockband is a GAME. How about, oh, I don’t know, a REAL music competition. Y’know, with actual instruments? No?

Rockband as a game is cool and a fun way to past time. A competition for it broadcasted on television? Not so much.

lord-of-thunder | 11/19/2008, 11:29 pm EST

“Rockband” as far as a video game is ok, I guess as long as people don’t confuse it with the real fuckin’ deal!! MTV should be renamed GTV or VGTV. Better yet, JTV for “joke television!”
