Phish Reunite For First Time In Four Years To Play Wedding

9/8/08, 12:39 pm EST

Phish reunited on Saturday night to play the wedding of their former road manager Brad Sands. The impromptu performance marked the first time the band played together onstage since they called it quits in 2004. Trey Anastasio, Mike Gordon, Page McConnell and Jon Fishman performed their own “Suzy Greenberg,” “Julius,” and “Waste.” In another star cameo, Police drummer (and former Anastasio bandmate in Oysterhead) Stewart Copeland sat in with the wedding band.

The wedding performance is already fueling rumors about the band’s inevitable reunion, especially after Anastasio’s comments to Rolling Stone saying “I would give my left nut to play [Phish's "You Enjoy Myself"] five times in a row every day until I die.” Plus, Mike Gordon told RS that the band has been getting dinner together and even held a meeting with Billy Breathes producer Steve Lillywhite. And then there was that near-reunion at Rothbury. There is precedent for the Phans hope that the wedding will equal the band getting back together: Fourteen months after the band announced they were taking an “extended time-out” in 2000, the band reunited to play another friend’s wedding, and ultimately returned to touring in 2002. Check out footage from the wedding above, with the sharply-dressed band — it’s still weird seeing Fishman not wearing a dress — performing Hoist’s “Julius.”

music professional | 9/9/2008, 10:44 am EST

Anyone who says phish sucks clearly knows nothing about real music.

Rolling Stone hailed them as “the most important band of the 90s” and stated that the band helped to “…spawn a new wave of bands oriented around group improvisation and superextended grooves.”

Super Duper Music Professional | 9/9/2008, 12:37 pm EST

Hey! I’m the music professional here and I say Phish sucks. They’re a bunch of goofballs trying to follow in the footsteps of the Dead. Do they also play county fairs and bar mitzvahs?

As a child of the 60’s…where real rock and roll and jamming was born…and as someone whoe thought that Phish was just a dead cover band…(i’m not a big GD fan…like ‘em…dont love ‘em)…I can tell you that the only group of muscians that can jam and blow minds is PHISH…they are unbelievable when they jam…if you havent seen them live or at least listened to extended live jams…then you just dont know…and should not talk about it…and just to add…Trey is good as a solo act…but he is 1/100th the guitarist that he becomes when he plays with PHISH…the sum of the parts is without question 1000x less the the whole FISH…All I can say about them getting back together is that I hope the momentum doesnt flounder and “Holy Mackeral”!

So you are saying that the Dead played county fairs and bar mitzvahs? Do you have a link to somewhere I can download those shows or see them on Youtube? Sounds like something I’d like to check out for myself!

Thundercrotch | 9/9/2008, 2:02 pm EST

I saw Phish a long time ago and let me tell you something….

It was a concert that had some music, average vocals, some impressive and self-indulgent noodling, many tye-dyed faux-hippies, bad parking, expensive refreshments, mild humidity and hairy legged and armpitted women.

Sound fun?

Shibbidda shabbidda shoobbidda | 9/9/2008, 3:51 pm EST

Phish is a wonderfully silly talented group of gifted musicians who are great at improvisations and musical experiment… however through no fault of their own, they unfortunately attract mostly mindless drug-addled hippie wannabes who follow them like lifeless zombies and obsess over every detail of the band.

Wally T | 9/9/2008, 6:59 pm EST

I love Phish, but I hate the ’scene’ I saw them in Kansas in 2003 and was moved by the playing but I wanted to kill all the assholes screaming through the quiet parts. They were just there for the drugs, which as I understand it, so was half the band! But I have to admit, I really didn’t like Phish until I discovered weed! Gave me the attention span for it, I guess.

jdog71 | 9/9/2008, 8:37 pm EST

New music from Phish is exactly what we all need right now….when RS gives the Jonas Bros 4 stars, the apocalypse is surely near.

People always hate what they don’t understand. -Me

If you don’t like phish thats fine. But don’t make yourself look like an ass just because millions of people would rather go to a phish show than listen to Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Bros. Those two are proof that music is slowly dieing.

Chris B. Bacon | 9/14/2008, 12:50 am EST

Phish and the Dead are the only two bands that I have ever witnessed blow people’s minds to pieces and then reassemble them in the course of a single song and they did it in such a beautiful way. During the course of a show this would happen repeatedly to the delight of all that were lucky enough to be in attendance. I hope to hell that this isn’t just a rumor. This 37 year old Phish-lover is dying for a really good show!!!

RVnesss | 9/17/2008, 4:53 pm EST

Gay4Trey | 9/23/2008, 11:52 am EST

To all the people saying phish sucks, i doubt anyone ever forced you to listen first of all, and second of all, if that’s true, why were they the biggest touring band in a decade, selling out up to 90 shows a year in their prime? doesn’t sound like a band that sucks to me. And to the “only music professional” or whatever, the fact that you are in the music industry in this day and age does more to detract from your credibility than it does add to it, after all, you clowns think all this emo crap and disney rock is good. And by the way, the White Stripes and the Raconteurs, and all those other rock revival bands, those guys suck. Phish kicks ass.

Am I the only one who thinks that Phish owes the fans that endured the travesty known as Coventry?? How about giving us some preference on tickets for the tour or soemething. You know there was a river of mud to wade through to get to the stage area and you all CRIED on stage and played horribly. I can’t listen to it to this day!!

Jay C. | 10/5/2008, 8:56 pm EST

If you don’t enjoy the music, then listen to something else, and stop crying about it. The fact is, the Grateful Dead were the first ones to do what they did, and most people that were not there just don’t seem to get it. As far as Phish, they are one of the only bands that can do what the Dead did, but their own way. As different as both may be, they both have the ability to do what many others can not. So if you don’t get it, then get off the bus!! and go wack off to your bubble gum music, that goes NOWHERE!!

See You In March!

Phish is a formula-not a band | 2/3/2009, 11:02 am EST

I must say I have listened to shows and even traded tapes years ago and agreed to accept a Phish show just because the dude wanted some Grateful Dead in his collection and was new at trading and that was the only thing he had. All this hoopla makes no sense to me as Phish has never given me chills bumps or moved me in any way other than to go to the stereo and put on some quality tunes. Trey has a nose to feed so big surprise that they have to tour to support his habit. What kind of band complains about pot smoke and tells their crowd they stink like patchoulli. Trey’s show at Bonnaroo a few years back was by far the worst show I have ever endured. He had an orchestra (can you say CHEESY? He fancied himself a maestro), GIANT EGO and people were having seizures in the muck and mess. They attract people seeking drugs rather than quality music. I did dig Mike Gordon and Leo Kotke at Bonnaroo and feel that Mike is a truly talented musician. It is a shame he got bogged down with Trey and all the cheesiest lyrics ever written down and sung through a PA. I wish I could relate to others joy that they are touring again, but honestly I feel like throwing up. I can’t believe Bonnaroo is allowing Phish to hog two shows at the festival. How about bringing in Panic or the Dead to offset how badly Phish sucks. I am PISSED that I got tickets during the pre-sale before the lineup was announced. I got a kick out of reading the post about how they owe their fans because Coventry SUCKED SOOOOO BAD! Talked about having to wade through a river of mud to get to the stage, the band actually CRYING ON STAGE and playing absolutely terribly. My best advice is hurry up and make Trey rich so they can retire-the formula was always about the money. I can only hope that Trey gets picked up again for heroin and is serving time and unable to make it to the two shows at Bonnaroo. The hospitals around Bonnaroo better be prepared for all the phish kids overdosing on heroin in the Tennessee sun. Two shows of this horrible band is enough for me and my lady to consider selling our tickets to Bonnaroo-I am not interested in listening to Phish or their fans talk about the band that is a formula to get rich. With all the killer acts out there I am astounded that Bonnaroo is pushing Phish down our throats for not 1 but TWO shows. I imagine once the hospitals fill up with kids they will realize their error-not to mention the drug overdose deaths on site at Bonnaroo. What kind of band CRIES on stage? What kind of band complains about pot smoke and patchoulli stink? Their name is Phish. Phuck Phish! The sooner they fade away the better music scene will be.

Phish is a formula-not a band | 2/3/2009, 11:15 am EST

Not to mention their stupid f*&^ing lyrics-they would be much better if they didn’t sing or fancy themselves lyricists.

washed-up-pennyless-nobody | 4/18/2009, 2:14 am EST

If you like fish you like trey and if you like trey you would probablly like john mayer, jason mraz and jack johnson. why to people like this drivel? there aint sh*t else. Good luck music “industry”. also u notice how trey is always smiling?
at least the dead changed thier lineup to mix things up and add space but fish is a bunch of lame college losers who are after a quick buck. if u have a college degree, get a job and leave rockin’ out to real rockers. i do respect the amount of drugs they take though i hope they o.d. before fenway park gig.
