Oasis Guitarist Attacked Onstage At Toronto’s Virgin Festival

9/8/08, 8:50 am EST

Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher was attacked by an audience member during the band’s set at the Virgin Festival in Toronto. As evidenced by the above video, the unnamed assailant appears from stage right and pushes Noel into his monitor while the band played “Morning Glory.” The man then attempts to confront singer Liam Gallagher before being promptly restrained by security (who also had to restrain Liam from punching the assailant). The band followed the attack with a short break before returning to the stage to resume their set. The unnamed attacker was later charged with assault. No motive was given as to why the man attacked Noel Gallagher but it’s safe to assume the assailant is a fan of either Jay-Z, Radiohead, Damon Albarn or whoever else Oasis happens to be sparring with this week.

Karma Police.

Someone here will get it.

OK OK, I don’t like Oasis one bit ’cause of how stuck up Liam and (especially) Noel are, but like many have said, audience attacks have no place whatsoever. A shame, but I guess what goes around comes around.

Paul | 11/15/2008, 9:23 am EST

Illegal? Of course it isn’t illegal. Do you think YouTube is a television station or something?

Anyway, this attack cracked three of Noels ribs, so, you know, you can kind of understand why they “missed a beat”?

Michael | 9/15/2008, 5:13 pm EST

Hmmm, I’ve seen way worse at Iggy Pop concerts and Iggy and band didn’t miss a beat. It’s a strange sign of the times that the show had to be so ABSOLUTELY disrupted for such a little rowdiness. And, just what the heck is Rolling Stone doing showing Youtube videos? Isn’t this illegal or something. Hmmmm, another strange sign of the times.

Anonymous | 9/14/2008, 8:52 pm EST

both of Liam and Noel is a tough guy too..so they should expect this kind of shit is coming

A Friend & Fan | 9/13/2008, 12:03 am EST

Liam is Irish, the lad that pulled the prank is Irish. Liam is known to have assaulted, the prankster who lost his head assaulted (stupid) the wife and kids of the prankster are the ones who get hurt the most. The prankster’s wife and her 3 young boys need forgiveness for the acts of a husband and father who lost his head and acted like a child. I do not understand Irish blood (it is specific to the Irish) please spare this young family they (the kids & wife) have everything to lose. I do not for a second believe that the assault should go unpunished as it was premeditated and ridiculous (alcohol?) although knowing the wife personally she would do anything for anyone of you. As a Fan and Friend I am begging that Oasis spare a young family.

Duane | 9/10/2008, 2:29 am EST

I agree about this article and the poor taste joke at the end. There is a sad state of the quality on online “Articles”. I also agree that no matter what The brothers say or do in the media it is part act and I am also empressed that they finished their set. That’s the kind of guys they are.

peace out

Jimmy Rao | 9/9/2008, 11:54 am EST

Poor Noel. I think he got hit in the head with a shoe about two years ago. Oasis seem to bring out the hyper-violence in people…

NEG | 9/9/2008, 9:48 am EST

Best. Video. Ever.

It’s good to know there’s always someone out there willing to live out our fantasies and always someone there to record it.

Let me see if I can conjure something else up… ok, now I’m thinking of someone bitch-slapping anyone from Nickleback during a show.

Get to it people!

Sarah | 9/9/2008, 9:17 am EST

Oasis do indeed have some of the most loyal fans out there- and believe it or not especially in the US.

How else could they sell out the Garden tour after tour- even if nothing has charted high here? (It’s not our fault our DJ’s suck..)

Anyway, the stooge who did this- what a cowardly act! There has been entirely too much of this in music lately. Something’s got to give- and hopefully it will be before we loose another star. Regardless of what type of music you listen to, rap, rock, etc., too many of artists we love are getting hurt- and killed.

Rina!! | 9/9/2008, 8:48 am EST

The Truth, Blake … Are you seriously? or are you complete idiots? What would you do in Liam’s place then? Uh? It’s easier for you to tell that sitting on yer arse there. Yeh! Think a bit with your brains, not with what you’re sitting on now!

Anonymous | 9/9/2008, 8:43 am EST

what a shame…more bs detracting from the brillaint music this band has put out for the last 15 years.

America is still the only country left that just doesn’t get it.

what a shocker for a nation that bows down to the jonas brothers, good charlotte, the jonas bros, and nickelback.

Gabriel | 9/9/2008, 7:18 am EST

Publicity stunt.

L.G. | 9/9/2008, 6:30 am EST

funny thing is that guy’s identity, phone number and even home ADDRESS has been revealed, he’s gonna get so OWNED!

funny | 9/9/2008, 3:47 am EST

Likely repayment for the bad remarks he’s made recently about the bands he wishes he could be in.

I figured someone would shut him up to make it so that the only reason he would ever have to open his mouth in public is to sing for his fans, but I never thought he’d be attacked onstage.

I can’t complain about it too much, though. That was pretty funny.

syt | 9/9/2008, 2:48 am EST

its stupid, why rolling stone tries to give an explanation of that incident??? blur, radiohead or jayz fans??? come on… trying to be someone….shame on you..

The Intl | 9/9/2008, 2:13 am EST

HE GOT THE WRONG BROTHER…

Mario Kart | 9/9/2008, 1:50 am EST

Yes Oasis has fans… we’re some of the most loyal fans on the entire planet.
The band knows this.

tbonespop | 9/9/2008, 1:28 am EST

Pathetic move by someone who feels he is a victim of something or someone or…Oasis. Obviously this guy has a need for attention and hates himself and therefore needs to assault an artist that’s achieved more than he can possibly dream of. Good thing this didn’t happen in the U.S. or the spin would be “America Assaults Oasis”. This band deserves props for the utter crap they have to deal with (yes, I know, they’ve partially brought it on themselves) but mostly for the stellar quality of their recorded work. In the end, the brilliance of their music speaks for itself.

Evan | 9/9/2008, 1:23 am EST

Lol Nathan’s post about Toronto being such a s***hole. NYC complex? What small ass town are you from that you’re so jealous Toronto is one of only 2-3 spots in Canada that gets all the great bands, oh and the biggest film fest in the world outside of Cannes.

Bryan | 9/9/2008, 1:14 am EST

Kudos to all the people who have chimed in pointing out what a classless and cowardly act this was — regardless of how they feel about Oasis. I think we should turn some of that tsk-tsking toward Daniel Kreps, the author of the article. Noel Gallagher is many things, and as an unabashed Oasis fan, I will still admit that “loudmouth jerk” probably sounds about right (his public persona, anyway). But nobody deserves this. And nobody deserves lame-ass jokes about Jay-Z and Blur in a report about them getting attacked by some whacko. Have some class, Kreps.

Brent | 9/9/2008, 1:09 am EST

Oasis has fans?

charles garmendia | 9/8/2008, 11:48 pm EST

what a fu#$$$ idiot (singer) he didnt even hit the guy with all the bouncers around him…he was hopping around like a little bird.

Nathan | 9/8/2008, 11:37 pm EST

Toronto is such a shit hole, just a bunch of dickless hosers with terrible sports and a New York City complex. I hope the only event that takes place there in the near future is a category 5 hurricane.

Will Houston | 9/8/2008, 11:23 pm EST

Can’t wait to hear the rest of this. Like someone pointed out- this guy could have easily murdered one of them (at least) with a pocket knife.

Michael | 9/8/2008, 11:05 pm EST

Liam’s hysterical because he was running away when the guy came toward him and when the security apprehended the guy he started attacking him. Granted it was an act of cowardice and my question is how on earth the guy got on stage. Talk about lack of security.

Jose | 9/8/2008, 8:03 pm EST

What sick idiot would do something like that is just wrong… and I dont understand people that put down the lads, mostly americans that dont understan good music and are in love with a bucnh of idiots called the jonas brothers… Im telling you in this days of shit commercial music and mtv theres only a few people that try do do something for the music and those are the gallaghers

‘THE TRUTH’,WHAT A COMPLETE WANKER YOU ARE

dave | 9/8/2008, 7:44 pm EST

i’m annoyed at this! hate u over there anyway and this just tops it off! u should count yourself lucky that the best band in the world wants to play in your shit hole and then u do that to a true genius! pissed off

Eric Fox | 9/8/2008, 7:31 pm EST

This is just another example of how pathetic people can be. I mean…what is the point in pushing the guy while he is entertaining the crowd? That guy is a coward and Karma will get him….I hope Noel Gallagher sues his ass.

People might not like the Gallagher bros. You have to understand the way they act is their gimic….they’re actually really good guys. Liam is a genuine person and he would be the first one to have a pint with a fan and take a picture.

Garbage like what happened is what spoils gigs for fans. Oasis acted nothing but professional..Cheers to finishing the gig….It would have been perfectly understandable if they just walked off.

Hey Guess What??? | 9/8/2008, 7:25 pm EST

This was staged.

masterplan | 9/8/2008, 6:31 pm EST

No matter what you think of liam + noel you dont attack somebody when they have there back turned, especially when there giving thousands of people there moneys worth.

Lennon fan | 9/8/2008, 6:18 pm EST

The guy who calles himself john lennon, you need to have a closer look at what john stood for and then ask yourself what happend to him in 1980. Idiot.

JK | 9/8/2008, 4:45 pm EST

Since it was at a music festival and not at an Oasis concert, my guess would be that the guys not an Oasis fan. neither am I, but knowone deserves to be decked on stage. What a pussy.

The Graveyard | 9/8/2008, 4:22 pm EST

Shawn, yes I’ve been to Canada, I freaking live here!

South Park sums it up beautifully: ‘You arrogant Americans, you think you can tell the world what to do. You think you’re Canada!’

Most Canadians have this attitude without realizing it.

Steve | 9/8/2008, 4:17 pm EST

Liam had the perfect opportunity to kick that pussy right in the mouth when the gaurds had him down. I wish he had just punted that fuckers head in right there. True there may have been lawsuits pending but it would have been a small one considering this toss bag pulled a Bertuzzi on Noel.

Anon | 9/8/2008, 3:23 pm EST

I was at that festival yesterday, third row. It was utter confusion after what happened. Half the crowd was saying it was Noel who was attacked, the other half was saying Liam. It was truly one of the most epic nights of my life though. I will never forget it.

Shawn | 9/8/2008, 3:19 pm EST

I’m not an Oasis fan, but this is an example of complete and unacceptable cowardice.

However to commenter who calls himself ‘the graveyard,’ (nice name, by the way, I guess undertaker and gravedigger were taken?) calling Canadians arrogant is also a little out of place.

This kind of thing happens at concerts all over. There are several countries known for arrogance. To call Canada one of them is a strong indicator that you have never been there. Try to leave the cemetery every once in a while dude.

Music Guy | 9/8/2008, 3:03 pm EST

Hopefully the attacker got the beat down he deserved.

rpaq | 9/8/2008, 3:03 pm EST

For anyone who think that the Gallagher are dipshit, or arrogant, or whatever… I was at the Bell Center two days before their gig in Toronto and they were really professional and respectful with the audience.

C | 9/8/2008, 3:01 pm EST

He deserved to get punched in the face both brothers do, but on stage is not the place to do it. I don’t like noel and i wish he would get what he deserves which is a beat down, but i also agree that who ever did this acted cowardly and tastelessly.

C-ice | 9/8/2008, 2:53 pm EST

If you look closely it is clearly Damon Albarn from Blur. He was spotted making a bet with Jay-Z and apparently won!

JJ | 9/8/2008, 2:53 pm EST

Sucker punches are for sissies. I like how the little girl ran away as soon has he did it. Embarassing.

K | 9/8/2008, 2:00 pm EST

Report is now he has rib injuries and some ligament damage (not sure where…knees etc.?)

Noel is not a big guy and shoving from behind is cowardly.

Jay-Z | 9/8/2008, 1:53 pm EST

That was great yo!

Bonehead | 9/8/2008, 1:51 pm EST

Nice cheap shot dumbass. Why doesn’t this guy hit people when they are looking. What the hell did that prove?

Grahame | 9/8/2008, 1:18 pm EST

I wonder if Noel needed a little time to wake up after that shocking but actually quite funny incident. It was a bit slapstick, lets face it. He’ll laugh about it one day. And did you see Liam pushing his chest out like a proud cock?

Anonymous | 9/8/2008, 1:00 pm EST

Throw that punk in jail next to the GNR leaker. After Dimebag Darrel was killed on stage, theres no excuse for these actions…

IAN | 9/8/2008, 12:56 pm EST

JUST GOES TO SHOW HOW VULNERABLE EVEN WITH SECURITY THEY WERE. THE DUDE COULD OF HAD A KNIFE.

peace and love promoter | 9/8/2008, 12:55 pm EST

That’s so stupid. Buddy is just promoting more hate and violence. I’m pretty sure the Oasis brothers have grown out of their pub brawling phase years ago…this was just undeserving and wrong!

Harry Loves Oasis | 9/8/2008, 12:51 pm EST

If Dan would pay me the $5.00 he owes me I could download 5 of their many hits from iTunes. Harry S. wants him some Noel G.

Johan | 9/8/2008, 12:50 pm EST

Noel has a broken rib an dknee ligament damage due to this tw@t

Their other gigs in usa and canada now under threat

Oasis rule
Best band EVER
OCT 7th DIG OUT YOUR SOUL

Anonymous | 9/8/2008, 12:46 pm EST

Throw that dude in the clink next to the gnr leaker…

Gage | 9/8/2008, 12:37 pm EST

Regardless of what dipshits Oasis are(talented dipshits, but dipshits none the same) there is no place for this. That guy is an idiot and should be charged with assault after he wakes up from the beating induce coma he got backstage.

Harry Loves Oasis | 9/8/2008, 12:31 pm EST

The attacker deserves the chair!

Swingline | 9/8/2008, 12:24 pm EST

Seeing as though audience attacking band once resulted in the shooting of Dimebag Darrell, I’d say it has no fucking place anywhere, anytime.

If somebody jumps on stage and wants to start some shit, I hope they get the beatdown they deserve. There’s plenty of other people at these that paid good money to watch a concert and not some rogue punk ass with a hard-on and a five-cent head.

Anonymous | 9/8/2008, 12:19 pm EST

Oasis rule, Noel rules. The guy that did this no doubt got his ass kicked. Truly heartbreaking.

Katt | 9/8/2008, 12:15 pm EST

This guy deserves to die. What a fucking asshole. We are lucky that they came back onstage after that. And all you idiots that don’t like Oasis? Go cry.

John Lennon | 9/8/2008, 11:27 am EST

Kudos to the guy who pushed Noel into his monitor. The Gallagher brothers are long overdue for someone to punch out their lights. Maybe this will start a trend of audience members attacking them at all their concerts. But next time, knock them out.

Mario Kart | 9/8/2008, 11:11 am EST

I was there,(I’m from Toronto)… we all in the mid-back section thought he attacked Liam.
They came back out after 5 minutes & didn’t do any encores.
But Noel did sing the first song after the incident so we thought Liam had maybe bailed on the rest of the show- he returned also.
Then we all stood in the rain waiting for ferry rides from the island lol

Jesse | 9/8/2008, 11:09 am EST

The truth–you should have your head examined…it’s to bad your father didn’t punch you in the face when you were born…you must be a limp bizkit fan..

Jesse | 9/8/2008, 10:56 am EST

What a piece of shit..hopefully security kicked the shit out of him backstage..

The Truth | 9/8/2008, 10:48 am EST

What kind of loser pushes him into a monitor? He should have punched him in the face.

@ Blake: Liam IS a little bitch!

Blake | 9/8/2008, 9:30 am EST

Liam looked like a little biotch
