Backstage at the VMAs: Britney Basks in Her Wins, Brand Condemns Sex, Linkin Park Rate the Night

MTV Video Music Awards host Russell Brand’s controversial, rapid-fire comedy had the press room buzzing last night, and the British comic defended himself after the ceremony. “I feel a bit bad that I kept talking about their vows to chastity,” Brand told reporters of his comments about the Jonas Brothers (he repeatedly joked about the band’s purity rings). “And I’d like to take this opportunity to say, ‘No one ever have sex again. It’s a mad idea. What a crazy way to spend an evening.’ ” Brand said he had a “lovely time” hosting the awards. “I do think it was a comeback for Britney,” he said. “This is the resurrection of Britney Spears. I saw stigmata. And, I liked when Lil Wayne leaned over and touched my legs. I think he might be from another world and he has a message for us all.” Brand also called Republicans “evil” and suggested “we need to return to socialism.”
(For more on Brand, check out our feature Dirty Sexy Funny in the current issue).

Britney Spears hit the press room basking in the afterglow of her three big wins. She smiled ear-to-ear holding her Moonmen and posing for the photographers. She didn’t talk to the press, but T.I. wasn’t shy about calling his own performance the best of the night. He also praised Spears and Brand. “Britney did her thing. It’s quite a comeback,” he said. As for Brand, “I think you have to push the envelope and think outside the box and he’s definitely doing that.”

Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington agreed. “Last year was probably one of the worst experiences of my professional career,” he told us. “It was terrible. This year’s show is much better.” His band’s “Shadow of the Day” picked up the award for Best Rock Video, and Joe Hahn said, “This is a cool video because it’s one that the whole band wasn’t in. It was just Chester and he carried the whole video. We’re trying to do different things so it feels good to win for that.”

The Pussycat Dolls’ Nicole Scherzinger informed us that the group roped in Missy Elliott to be in their next video for “Whatcha Think About That.” “It’ll be the Pussycat Dolls taken to the next level,” Scherzinger said. Doll Domination drops September 20th and the Dolls are plotting a world tour that starts in January 2009.

When a reporter asked presenter Paris Hilton about the Russell Brand-Jonas Brothers chastity controversy, Hilton said, “I think they are all really good kids. That’s something cool for a kid to keep so don’t pick on them for that.” Hilton added that her new music will be “very pop like Kylie Minogue.” A few contestants on Hilton’s new reality show also lingered backstage, telling Rolling Stone that they would get sued for $6 million if they revealed the winner. They did say that Hilton has permanently ditched her catchphrase “that’s hot” for “love’s it.”

If there was one hot thing Seth Green loved last night, it was Weezy’s ass. The actor got caught between Lil Wayne and T-Pain as they started their performance — not that he was complaining: “I gotta say, I almost squeezed Lil Wayne’s butt because it looked so firm and squeezable.”

OMG i hope Russ stays away from the VMAs in the future because these 12 years old years just cause trouble, they want things spoon feed to them and when an intelligent, funny and daring man steps infront of them its to much for them to handle in the America’s “jonas bros” years, makes me ashamed to call myself an Amaerican, no wonder the world hates this country . . i’m begining to see why! I’ve looked into Russell’s career and to the people who try and put him down as being a bad comedian then why can he fill 1000s of seat venues in Europe? and he is growing in populatity here, why do all the chat shows over here keep inviting him back and saying he is one of the funniest guys they’ve spoken to in a long time? huh? maybe you should all open your eyes and realise America isn’t the only country on earth . . but it is the most hated! and YOU are in fact the one who is wrong with Russell Brand, as i’m sure your wrong on a lot of things in your life!

Bundle21 | 9/12/2008, 1:35 pm EST

Except go to war with you, you ignorant prick. We have to accept when your TV shows attempt to take the piss out of the rest of the world. Even ones i love: The simpsons, South Park. Family Guy etc…But they constantly get it wrong and make you and them look really stupid. Russell might not be the best comedian in the world. Because he’s not really a comedian. He’s just a guy who wears his heart on his sleeve, and calls things as he sees them. Now grow up, you obviously don’t have a clue what MTV used to stand for.

Jim | 9/11/2008, 1:01 pm EST

Brand was terrible.hes a bumb, british people have not done anything good for America since classic rock.Brand is not a comedian. Comedians are funny.

TruthHurts | 9/11/2008, 9:37 am EST

Michelle, AKA ‘Michelle Malkin

If you are reading this comment, just look for a comment made by this moron on this page with her name as just ‘Michelle’. Funny enough i came to this page as a result of the comment she just made on the ‘university of racist TV’ channel called FOX. I Just saw her on FOX & FRIENDS, a program aired on Fox news sky channel 509.

It will interest you guys to know how i came to the conclusion that it had to be this fool that i just saw on Fox as she indicated on air that and i quote ‘’ This was the guy(referring to our dear Russel Brand)who dressed like Osama Bin ladin immediately after 9/11 and was caught'’ though she continued talking rubbish as to why MTV allowed Russell to present the award evening i immediately became incensed because you need to know this fool and what comes out of her mouth each time she writes or you see her on FOX NEWS( A racist News cable channel owned by Rupert Mudorch & a sister station to SKY News). Immediately i saw a comment made by a name Michelle it confirmed to me immediately just as exactly what she commented here & what she said on air just right now. So do a search on MICHELLE MALKIN on youtube and see how rude this ‘Go Happy Wanna be American Hero’ conducts herself on Fox especially each time she is given the opportunity to spew some idiotic comments or champion the American cause on her own dream of what America should look like.

It should Amaze you that this daughter of an immigrant from Philippines talks more about immigrant as she often refers them as ‘illegal Aliens’ more than the white Americans who take things in their stride. Is it not hypocritical that someone born in just 1970 to a Filipino immigrant parents on working visas, according to her profile on wikipedia as she has a basket mouth filled with a loose cannon waiting to say any thing on air to discredit any Democrat and most importantly OBAMA. This is one of the foot soldiers of FOX news racist TV Channel championing the cause to make sure that OBAMA looses this election. No wonder she can say on air that Russel wore a bin ladin cloths, in other words to insinuate that Russel Brand after pleading to Americans to vote for Obama during his MTV MVA award has the same ideologies as bin ladin and a relevance to Obama to drive the matter to the hearts of wider American public. As i said look up this loose cannon ‘Michelle Malkin’ on youtube and see her in action. You can also visit her website hotair.com & michellemalkin.com where she distils stupid caricatures against Obama.

Sam | 9/11/2008, 12:16 am EST

Americans are ridiculous, you should all just bloody move to the middle east because you’d fit right in there with your narrow minded views and religious zealotry. Those Jonas wankers would have just had the crap beaten out of them when I was teenager, grow some damn balls already and don’t be such little pussies. And newsflash America, your president is a complete and utter moron and him and anyone who voted for him is viewed that way by the entire planet. Yes we, along with Russell Brand, are all laughing at you ridiculous religious backwater hillbilly idiots.

Voice of reason | 9/11/2008, 12:02 am EST

I love Russell. But then, Im an adult, and adults don’t watch mtv. Apparently

Voice of reason | 9/10/2008, 8:58 pm EST

I dont usually write in these comments sections with my opinions, as it is futile arguing with a bunch of 12 year-olds on heat.

But some of the criticism of Brand on here and other forums really is shocking, and i felt i needed to put in my 2 pence (yes im a brit)

This is mainly to the little girls having coronaries over what he said about the Jonas brothers.

You talk about morals and respect for them, when in the same breath saying Brand should be ‘executed’ ‘given AIDS’ and starting up ‘hate clubs’ against him. There seems to be a whiff of hypocricy in everything you people are saying. You want someone ‘hanged’ for taking the piss out of your ‘idol(s)’? (and oh-yeah, wasnt there something in the bible about false idols? hhmm)

Anyone remember when Britney was staying pure till marriage? - that lasted long!. Why dont you little girls wake up and realise this is marketing ploy to make teeny-bopppers think they have a chance a bagging a jonas brother! - i would guess most of them are probably not virgins anyway! - and as for ‘biggest band in the world’, this just shows how misguided you folk are - America is not ‘the world’, the majority of the (real) world couldnt tell a ‘jonas brother’ from a ‘new kid on the block’!

Admittedly Brand could have come prepared with a larger repetoir of material, but as we have just found out - MTV made him cut alot of his act right before the show started. He’s been invited back to host it next year and personally i cant wait, i just hope he is allowed to be himself and uncencored next time.

Oh and finally, the music on offer at the VMA’s was shocking to say the least! - and Slash, what are you thinking!?

C from derry but also London | 9/10/2008, 9:59 am EST

Don’t send him back to England! Keep him over there so he can keep on annoying the fuck out of the yankee-doodles! No don’t actually they’ll probably nut him like they do with everybody else who doesn’t go along with their right-wing racist system- JFK, Martin Luther King, Abe Lincoln etc.
Russell actually did those Jonas brothers a massive favour (oh yes you fools! There really is a ‘u’ in favour!) because now they may be able to break the rest of the world. Because breaking the rest of the world is actually more important than breaking America.

A Brit Girl | 9/10/2008, 5:53 am EST

Russell was not on his best form but he was funny. I’m shocked at how seriously people there take themselves. Brand is edgy and shocking and obcviously too hot for the US to handle, send him back to Britain where we have a sense of humour.

Karina | 9/9/2008, 9:59 pm EST

Brittany Spears looked very fucken hot….i dont care if she was bald…she looks hot…!!!!!

dickheads | 9/9/2008, 10:34 am EST

the jonas brothers are not a band! they are a real disgrace to music and themselves!

A Brit | 9/9/2008, 9:13 am EST

Who the hell are the Jonas Brothers?
And who still cares about religion?

lostforwords | 9/9/2008, 7:37 am EST

Exactly!

Brand was hilarious - to those that like his style. Same as any comedian, not everyone likes the same style and in stand up you get off the wall. Not manufactured comedy sketches. That’s the point of stand up comedy - outside the comfort zone for the best stand ups. Dont shoot the host, he was paid to do that job and they clear content, and no doubt thought it was pretty edgy and r&r. Or they would have put a “professional host/presenter” like Ryan Seacrest up front. They hold their breath each year at the oscars because comedians can push the comfort zone. Well, dont use them then.

Talk about taking things far too seriously and utterly gullible, even arrogant, in response to manufactured beliefs that things are as “seen”. he had every right to present the awards - and do so in his own style (with minimal swearing, almost none actually).

What a disingenuous and ill-informed fuss about nothing

Good shout MTV, at least it got it all talked about, more than the actual awards themselves did.

Rosie | 9/9/2008, 6:09 am EST

Ok, firstly I’d just like to say to whoever said that the Jonas Brothers were the biggest band in the world…America is NOT the World!! I don’t think I know anyone here in the UK who’s heard of them.
As for Brand…he’s a funny guy and it cracked me up when he was going on about Bush. I’m sorry to say if you didn’t know but to the rest of the world the man (Bush)is a joke! And I’m ashamed of my country’s politicians for supporting him…now the rest of the world hates us too!
I do think what Brand was saying about the purity rings was a bit harsh. I think that was probably done because in the UK Christians are an easy target so he can get away with it (in the UK, no one would dare say anything derogatory about jews or muslims etc because there would be uproar and it’s politically incorrect, but for some reasons it’s not the same for christians and they get mocked a lot more). But I think that’s different in the US, there are a lot more christians and it’s much more politically incorrect to mock them…which I think is a good thing.
Brand is still pretty funny…he can be VERY controversial and crude tho! I think a lot of americans prob just aren’t used to his type of humour so it’s more shocking. I’m surprised he didn’t tone down his act for an American audience to be honest. When I was watching him I found him hilarious at times but I was cringing at the thought of how the majority of Americans would probably take it!

Liz! | 9/9/2008, 6:05 am EST

…I think were forgetting, he’s a comideian. dear me we are takeing ourselves seriously these days!

lostforwords | 9/9/2008, 5:47 am EST

here’s the thing (as they tell us in American advertising selling us American products on our UK channel)…

MTV WAS when it started about videos and R&R…it opened to the words “Let’s Rock and Roll”. Then there was the MJ era - when MTV didnt show black videos until Billie Jean and Thriller changed the scheduling. And boy hadnt that come a long way last night …we though we had tuned into the MOBOS at one point, hip hop awards and not one other artist seemed to be able to perform a solo without a “mix”.

So to Russell Brand and politics and…well…sex. Firstly, lets get real. He “offended people”. For what, making jokes. But thats what edgy comedians do, take us outside our comfort zone. And “you dont need a Brit to come make fun of your politics and tell you what to do”. Damn it 80,000 of us went and paid over $250 to see Rage Against the Machine do that a couple of weeks ago…did we moan, whine and say they shouldnt have mentioned Tony Blair or talked politics. HELL No. And lets not forget, you bring us into the equation whenever possible, it cuts both ways. Actually we listened to similar speeches from many USA artists - now we know why, they are too afraid to open their mouths in a nation of “free speech” as part of its constitution!!!!

What blinkered rubbish.

And as for promise rings. What was just as offensive was Jordin Sparks implying that anyone who had a sexual encounter out of marriage was a SLUT. Girl, keep your opinions to yourself I voted for you and that was offensive in itself. The rubbish about the Jonas brothers…GET REAL. They are not. Like anything in music (well lets call it the pop business) it is manufactured. And hey didnt they give three awards to a girl who made the same “promise” and look what she got up to. As for all those squeaky clean disney people - Justin, Christina, Britney ..they have made a career on trading on their sexuality to little girls who dont know any better but go one step further than dressing up in mummys shoes. And were we mistaken or were those great other teen role models - Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton on display. And its ok to dance to a song “I kissed a girl” so long as you wear a promise ring and dont go past first base…

Russells look and the whole bullied at school thing. Guess you are the sort of people kids wear blue wristbands to avoid. And Mr Brand has spoken out here superbly against racism and bullying. He may be naughty, but hes smart, well educated and peaceful.

What was offensive was watching a load of business “execs” registering boredom at performances throughout. Who could blame them, the miming was shocking and those that couldnt hold a note plentiful.
Jamie Foxx…what an embarrassment, but as I said lip synching was the order of the night.

Apart from Kid Rock it seems and did the audience move, did they join the rapper and raise their hands. Did they heck as like.

If people wanted a gentile cocktail drinking evening they went to the wrong gig. If they wanted Rock and Roll they went to the wrong gig. Slash, what were you thinking!

And by the way those so easily offended….did you count the bleeps. Thats right your righteous ears heard all that Russell said, but why bother airing Jamie Foxx, or any of the rap because we just listened to one long bleep. And hey, when exactly did God give the nod to things like the Pussycat Dolls?

We all have beliefs, ideals, rules, teenage crushes and dreams. We grow up, we change, we make mistakes and look back and laugh at ourselves. And that’s the point, as humans we can either nurture the petty minded manufactured crap that has kids drawing hanged men rather than mickey mouse. Or we can laugh at ourselves and keep one foot on the floor when we watch drivel like this…it’s not real!

For those who thought Russell “disrespected” Twighlight. When? I am and old rocker and I just read all the books (that incidently owe their inspiration to another BRIT bit of genius…MUSE). His fey, childlike presentation conveys a compliment, you know when he is aiming a sling shot. LLCoolJ got it, so did the mtv presenter, innocent fun.

Unlike the money behind pop manufacture which creates an audience that says “dont moan about promise rings”, “sex makes you a slut” “you get an STD” - havent you heard of safe sex in the US. Dont answer that, no need! “Lesbian culture is cool” “we have great role models” “let our kids listen to American celebs swearing all night, that’s hot”.
And then let’s all just pretend we are so “down with the hip hop culture”. It was like watching scenes from Be Cool!!

You want it taken seriously?! Get over it. Wake up to the fact that Hansen used to exist, that the Jonas boys are here today and then, well, Hansen tomorrow. Even McFly have some rock skills and what an insult to Black Tide. It’s a gimmick, it sells, its not about their “rock skills”. Its filling a niche for kids.

And as for demi moore. Was she punked or what! No mike and hideous underage outfit. Lets all “be cool” eh. Brit - we love you, but three awards for an ok video and no live appearance except in the court room. Desperate times need desperate measures.

MTV wanting to make its awards rock and roll and as ever not knowing where to go. MMM lets do hip hop, meets disney. Oh and better throw in a bit of rock - wheel out slash but only let Paramore play off circuit. And the selected videos, my god the film industry will have to close down because only the same handful were nominated - and clearly not for artistic work. This was more the Smash Hits awards.

yes, it was time for a re-brand. And Brand was the right idea but wrong audience (kids and execs).
Someone clearly spent too long watching the last Brit Awards debacle and thought the Sharon Osbourne (hey you dont find them offensive or mind laughing at their behaviour) presenting mess was uber R&R. Geez. All trying too hard to be something but not sure what. Definitely not VIDEO definitely not rock n roll.

Lets just call them the MISNEYS from now on. Middleaged Disney Awards.

How appropriate that he was there on stage. KID Rock. But this was an event without “rock”. As my young son pointed out..why does Pink think she is a rock n roll star.
No idea but the trend for leona to murder classic rock is on its way (yes the legacy of that other Brit who …has sex before marriage as he doesnt believe in getting wed!..and insults the US every week. Simon Cowell).

MTV go back to videos, go back to edgy presenters. Bring back Ray Coakes and more of Gonzo, stop going on about cribs and pop. Throw away the sales sheets. Small wonder we spend more time on Kerrang. If you want to be pop, then un-brand. No more russell, no more rock. Lots of girls dressed as hookers, swearing, hip hop and stuff. Tasteful.

It’s not real though. Its as real as a candy bar - hardly a single sound without a dat machine (OK Christina we forgive you we know u can sing). And a theme of Mad Max plays wanna be Tommy Lee. Give him the show - Supernova had more guts and glamour than this and they could all perform!

Swearing, three moonmen, Britney, The jonas brothers, promise rings, rap, kissing girls, pseudo rock n roll. But hey. funny enough, cant be taken seriously, it’s manufactured for the audience. none of it real. And isnt that what Russell brand actually said!

C from Derry but also London | 9/9/2008, 5:24 am EST

America needs to grow up!! Russell Brand is a very funny man. It seems that the only people complaining on this blog are Jonas brother fans, 12 year old girls and republicans. All are one and the same really!
So what if a comedian takes the piss out of a bunch of virgins and George Bush? They are ridiculed around the world, out of American earshot, so why should it not take place on stage in America so that you can get an impression of how ridiculous the Christian right really is.
Muppets! Brand has delivered exactly what he set out to achieve; a swift kick up the buttocks for American arrogance through the use of a shocking endorsement of your first amendment. You gave him the stick to beat you with. Accept this metaphorical beating like the man you proclaim to be and not because the Jonas brothers got a bit of stick.
Around the world Russell Brand is viewed as a literary luminary and a comedy trailblazer. Just because he isn’t plastered to the screens 24/7 in the US doesn’t mean he’s not famous. He’s even better. He’s famous in Europe which means that he has a lot more credibility. Europe is that place across the pond where you need to apply for a passport to go.
This is not aimed at any Americans who would normally vote Democrat, or those who have a sense of humour and will see it for what it is anyway. It’s a joke aimed at offending dickheads who can’t laugh at themselves. You should recognise it from your screens last night.

Ghost Rider | 9/9/2008, 4:38 am EST

Russell Brand what an idiot !! O’Bama should have picked him for a running mate !! I’m sick and tired of the music industry if you wanna call it that anymore thinking everyone that listens to pop/rock or modern music has to be a liberal minded wussy !!! So they choose a host like that English fruitcake to talk crap about our president.

Rock On !!

Nick | 9/9/2008, 4:17 am EST

Before I read about the VMA’s “headlines”, I had NEVER heard nor seen Russell Brand. To most people in the U.S., he is a nobody. Just another Euro to me (from what I read). He looks like a fruitcake anyways. As far as the Jonas Brothers go, I wouldn’t know one of their songs even if I heard it. It’s little kids music. Why they are such a craze I’ll never know. The Brothers and Brand remind me of kids in high school would get beat up or singled out just because of how they look. Now if that one dude from the Jonas Brothers and Miley even make a “tape” (you know), then I’ll be all over that. I would love to see that smokin body in action!

i think everyone needs to lighten up a bit. Brand isn’t trying to ‘Break’ america, its only beneficial for a celebrity to break america is they are just interested in ££ and $$ as there isn’t any kudos to be gained with being popular in the states. And as for those Jonas Bros - come one, they are obviously part of a marketing plan. You can see it now, 3 kids with promise rings.. hmm.. lets concentrate on that, make them look squeaky clean and get every 10-14yr old kid to buy their music. Watch the record labels dump them when they get older - gullible americans, they make me laugh

Liberal BBC sucks | 9/9/2008, 1:22 am EST

The person who hired Russell Brand as a host, should be deported to Great Britain. Brand was a disaster, and not remotely funny. Enough with mixing politics and award shows — it doesn’t work! Besides, Americans don’t need some foreigner telling us who to vote for in OUR presidential election. The English would have been better represented if they had sent Benny Hill, and he’s been dead for eight years.

kndsou | 9/9/2008, 12:13 am EST

Let me first say that I am a huge Russell Brand fan. I thought the VMA’s sucked. I thought Russell looked uncomfortable and I didn’t care for his humor. I thought he was trying too hard to be funny. When ordinarily ‘funny’ just flows from him.
MTV needs to play more videos. Just my opinion. It was “MUSIC TELEVISION” and now I don’t know what the hell it is….

jacki | 9/8/2008, 11:56 pm EST

A comeback is when you win three awards. That is a comeback and she is amazing.

No Name | 9/8/2008, 11:35 pm EST

I really think that what Russell said about the Jonas Brothers was absolutely disrespectful and uncalled for! What the Jonas Brothers are doing is amazing and they are proving to the world that there are boys out there that don’t think about getting into a girls pants and actually have some dignity and respect for people! Just because he probably has an STD, doesn’t mean he should belittle people who have worth in their lives! Oh, and did you see the picture of Russell Brand being hanged that a Jonas Brother fan drew?? That is what he gets!! He is going to have to live with the fact that he disrespected the Jonas Brothers for the rest of his life..cause the Jonas Fans will NEVER let him down for that!! They will haunt him till the day he dies!! Jonas Fans have proven themselves to drive people to the brink of insanity because they said something bad about the Jonas Brothers! Just ask the last radio station that made fun of Kevin for not having one! They called the Jonas Brothers PLEADING for their fans to stop! And they still get calls, remarks and letters written to them with death threats and the whole shabang! Russell will deal with that for the rest of his life! Next time Russell..choose your words wisely..and don’t disrespect others!

Jonas Brothers are the most amazing men in the world!!!
:D

soph | 9/8/2008, 11:14 pm EST

I like Britney Spears, but what comeback? She didnt perform and she said like few words when she accepted those awards. Some please tell me the definition of a comeback because that definately wasnt it.
I think Brand should of stopped poking fun of the Jonas Brothers all night. Everytime they came back to him it was the whole purity ring thing. He definately needed more material. It was funny the first time, but hearing about it five times made me annoyed of him. Plus, the jonas brothers arent the only ones there who have purity rings. I commend Jordin Sparks for what she said. We’re not all like Brand we’re not SeX addicts.

sivaD | 9/8/2008, 10:51 pm EST

What’s up with all the people defending the Jonas Brother’s purity rings? Russel was just pointing out that a 15 year old boy who doesn’t want to get laid is either incredibly sheltered or is just a complete anomaly.

With that said, the show was irrelevant anyways. Seriously, what’s a VMA worth these days?

Danielle | 9/8/2008, 10:14 pm EST

i just want to set a record straight with all you people…

i love the jonas brothers.
i think russel brand is hilarious.
i did think what he said about the jonas brothers was very disrepectful.
did i think it was funny? absolutely.

people need to learn to laugh at themselves. and i know russel’s a big idiot for making fun of teenagers for having values, but he knew he could get away with it because the jonas brothers were on TV and could only laugh about it.

i thought the VMA’s were kinda boring besides the jonas brothers performance and russel brand.

i didnt think britney made any type of comeback. she came to the show, said “this is the VMA’s” sat down and gave the same acceptance speech all three times

“i would like to thank God for blessing me like this. my beautiful family. my two boys that inspire me everyday and all of my fans” shut up, brit. what fans? get a real acceptance speech and then come talk to me.
she didnt deserve any of those awards, MTV felt bad and wanted to make it look like she made a comeback. video of the year should have went to either jonas brothers or tokio hotel. i HATE tokio hotel with a huge passion but its true. and best pop video? jonas brothers. hands down.

if it was up to people to vote, jonas brothers woulda won both awards they were nominated for. us fans have got some massive amount of power.

the VMA’s are completely rigged due to the fact that britney won three awards because they felt bad. congratulations MTV, you blew your cover.

musicluver18 | 9/8/2008, 9:59 pm EST

I thought it was okay. Brand, he was funny, but also disrespectful. With the whole Jonas thing, I am mad, and somewhat personally hurt by it, but hey, its hollywood for crying out loud! what do you expect?

margo | 9/8/2008, 8:37 pm EST

ruseel brand kept talking about sex it was really annoying

nickalabambam | 9/8/2008, 7:57 pm EST

The VMAs were AWESOME… because of Brand. I’m a Republican and I voted for Bush (twice). Brand’s a comedian and last night he just told ‘his’ truth about the way things are and have been in his own unique, and i thought, darn funny way. I thought he was crude, but then again, pretty funny! Shocking too! That Jonas Bros stuff was too funny! PPl need to be able to laugbh at themselves more - this is MTV and it was a joke!! With regard to his political leanings, I guess I can admit that Bush is a little slow, I think he means well, but he isn’t the smartest. Retard is too strong though. Maybe retard doesn’t carry the level of offense in the UK that it does here - maybe someone should’ve told him!?

I don’t think anyone’s gonna listen to Brand’s political views, but I’ll say this. To those fellow Americans out there who say that a Brit can’t comment on American politics, I say you’re wrong. Great Britain have fought alongside us in Iraq, aFGHANISTAN and in WW1 AND WW2. He has every right to comment.

Plus, our own comedians have been saying much worse for years! I’m still voting McCain, but politics is about debate and if Brand has done anything, by God he’s created that! I believe in free speech for everyone. He has every right to say what he thinks, where he wants, even if I disagree with him. MTV should’ve been more carfeul if they didn’t want a ’situation’ on thier ahnds. Alot of people posting this hate stuff make me ashamed to be an American and a Republican. There’s my 2 cents…

nickalabambam | 9/8/2008, 7:54 pm EST

The VMAs were AWESOME… because of Brand. I’m a Republican and I voted for Bush (twice). Brand’s a comedian and last night he just told ‘his’ truth about the way things are and have been. I thought he was crude, but then again, pretty funny! Shocking too! That Jonas Bros stuff was too funny! PPl need to be able to laugh at themselves more - this is MTV and it was a joke!! How refreshing to have someone speaking their mind and doesn’t give a s*** who he offends!? The youth of today have lost that sense of rebelliousness - I’ll bet the kids of today would be more appalled than our parents if they saw what Punk was like in the 1980s!!

MTV should’ve been more carfeul if they didn’t want a ’situation’ on thier ahnds. Alot of people posting this hate stuff make me ashamed to be an American and a Republican. There’s my 2 cents…

M | 9/8/2008, 7:54 pm EST

I meant to say Russell Brand is jsut plain DISGUSTING!!!! And When WAS the Last Time You Took A Shower?????? You smell really bad!!

Kara | 9/8/2008, 7:51 pm EST

ok russel brand basically ruined the vmas last night. first off, he’s from the uk, so no one really cares who he wants to win the election. and second of all, he had no right to make fun of the jonas brothers’ purity rings. he definetly owes them an appology.

M | 9/8/2008, 7:51 pm EST

Russel Brand! Why Are You Even Famous????????? He was so stupid, it wasn’t funny, it was jsut palin disgusting, like no one wants to hear him talk about penises, condoms, and masturbation on live tv!!! Do You know how many young kids watch Video Music awards???? MTV chose the suckiest host and i thought last year was better than this!!! Russell Brand and his stupid hair, please go back to wherever you came from!!!! And don’t tell people to vote for Obama, they can choose whoever they want it’s their choice, and who are you to say, You’re not even American!!!!!!!! So go back home and live where people like you, we don’t want another wasted mind in this country!!! He really needs to apologize for Sarah Palin and her daughter and her future son-in-law!!! As well as the jonas Brothers and other people he has offended!!! Russelll Brand is the suckiest host MTV has ever hired to host the VMA”S!!! He was just rude and freaky, So Russell brand, you can suck it!! The first five minutes of the show, i got so tired of you and i turned off the t.v.!! That’s how bad your hosting was!!! Peace, and Long Live the Republicans and Jonas Brothers!!!!

diana | 9/8/2008, 7:46 pm EST

to every Brand hater.
get the fuck over it.
MTV is going down the toliet anyways, why not spice it up a tad.
the jonas brothers are fags anyways.
p.s. republicans are evil.

Michelle | 9/8/2008, 7:14 pm EST

THIS IS IN REPLY TO ALL THE COMMENTS SAYING EVERYONE “JUST DOESNT GET RUSSELL BRAND’S HUMOR”

In his 20’s, Russell Brand was hired by Britsh MTV as a VJ for “MTV Select”. Brand was fired on September 12, 2001(the day after 9/11) for showing up to work high and dressed as Osama Bin Laden.

LOOK IT UP BRAND SUPPORTERS!
There is a fine line between being FUNNY and being an insensitive bonehead. If Britian can regognize insensible behavoir against our country WHY CANT WE?
This is the IDIOT MTV chose to host the VMA’s…ALL Americans should be ashamed that this person was allowed on American Television.
MTV owes everyone an apology for their foolish and obscure act.

chlozie | 9/8/2008, 7:04 pm EST

The first joke about the purity rings was a little humorous but don’t spend the whole evening using it. It reminded me of David Letterman recycling the “Uma-Oprah” joke at the Oscars all night a few years ago. It was boring!! Like Russell Brand!!

A New Russell Brand Fan | 9/8/2008, 6:51 pm EST

MTV’s VMA is so boring….you all say???

Then why did you watch the whole show, and why are you taking the time to blog away???

Russell Brand Rocked! He was the best VMA host ever. I’m still laughing.

For all those who choose to complain, blogging away with all the disapproval of Russell, one thing is for sure…you now know who Russell Brand is. And I’ll bet, next time he’s on tv, you will watch, just to see what he says.

So, he won! You are now a fan, whether you like him, or not.

Thank you MTV for entertaining me :)

JP | 9/8/2008, 6:30 pm EST

Caroline, why do you need to wear a purity ring? Is it like a string around your finger or something? When things get hot and heavy on your date, you can look at your ring and remember that you have a moral standard.

Purity ring and chasity vows are status symbols among Christian Right and deserves to be ridiculed. Not for the fact that you want to save yourself for marriage. That is a respectable moral standard to have. You are using a ring to advertise the fact that you are a virgin to shame all the non-christian and non-virgins that they are not like you. The non-christian and the sexually experienced have the same right to tell people who have those rings “To get f*cked!”.

caroline | 9/8/2008, 6:08 pm EST

wow. russell brand offended me in so many ways in such a short amount of time. for him to call out the jonas brothers for wearing purity rings, was soo immature and very offensive. i wear a purity ring, and i’m pretty darn proud of it. for him to bring up the election during an awards show was so absurd and unnecessary. he owes George Bush, Sarah Palin and her daughter (weather he’s a Republican or not, it was still incredibly rude and inappropriate), and the Jonas Brothers, and everyone watching his disrespect-fullness during the show so much more than an apology. it was so disgusting and wrong. mtv really needs to re-think their host next year and what their message is.

gez | 9/8/2008, 5:59 pm EST

personally dont think its a big deal, he apologised im sure jonas brothers dont really care theyre havin a good time. and i thought brand was a good host.x

Kim's Deeler | 9/8/2008, 5:59 pm EST

The Jonas Brothers need to laugh about it,and not take it seriously but do what they beleive in.

Russel Brand is hysterical and genious, watch Forgetting Sarah Marshall and you would understand the humor.

Britney isnt talented but it was good to see her in good health.

Jordan Sparks isnt talented and is a whiny biatch who should have been cooler.

Lil Wayne is silly crunk music. But listen as you please.

Kid Rock is a white trash hick who samples an overplayed KFC theme song.

Thats the night in a nutshell.

MTV Sucks! | 9/8/2008, 5:32 pm EST

I thought that the VMAS couldn’t get any worse than last years… I was wrong. Brand - Not funny, Jonas Brothers - Who Cares? MTV can’t even get legitimate bands on their program anymore. Hears a hint MTV… Try playing some videos - then do a video award show.

Bill | 9/8/2008, 5:27 pm EST

I wound up muting brand and just watching the “performances,” mostly karaoke style. Pink was pretty good, and the chick in Parmaour. The rappers were animated but musically boring. I hope I live long enough to see fat old Lil Wayne doing a PBS fundraiser.

Oh Come ON | 9/8/2008, 5:23 pm EST

I really don’t care one way or the other about this silliness, but I do want to make one observation.

If The Jonas Brothers were The Jonas SISTERS, with a 15 year old FEMALE lead singer, would it have been as “edgy” and “funny” to make fun of them for NOT having sex? Hmmm…methinks not. Me thinks Brand would’ve looked like the biggest creep ever, and quite possibly have come off as a pedophile.

…and there, my VMA-obsessors, lies the ol’ double-standard.

Marsizzle | 9/8/2008, 5:22 pm EST

The jonas brothers are amazing! That perverted Russel Brand has to frickin stop! What is wrong with keeping chastity? NOTHING! There definately IS a 15 yr old Jonas! Russel has to learn to pick on someone his own size, and frickin age, the only reason that he picked on JB, was because he knew that they wouldnt do anything about it! JB are too much of gentlemen to make this into a big deal, but watch what would happen to Russel if he had been mocking T.I or The Game! Would he have the guts? I THINK NOT!

Marsizzle | 9/8/2008, 5:17 pm EST

Okay, all the Jonas haters need to stop, seriously. Even if you dont like the Jonas Brothers, you have to admit that any jokes on chastity WILL go into a controversy, along with abortion, and whether or not gays should marry! LEAVE THEM ALONE! If they believe chastity is the way, which is great, then LET THEM! There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with that!! All of y’all need to grow up and see that Russel Brand or Brandt or Bland (which his jokes were…) whatever his stupid last name is, was wrong!

chucklechuckle | 9/8/2008, 4:38 pm EST

Russell Brand like so many talented comedians is far from stupid. listen to the mans radio show. This is a very well read man. The reason so many people are outranged is not because they disagree with his comments but rather they cut a little to close to home. Bush is the most unpopular president in living memeory. He is ridiculed world wide. This is how people view America. It is OK to poke fun at people as long as you can poke fun at yourself. Stop with the wusification of our kids. Sarcasm, wit call it what you want needs a degree of intelligence to understand.

Finally we are all very quick to mention free speach and our right to it unless we disagree with the point being made and then we turn in to bigots. “Send he back to where he came from”

Its comedy folks - relax

chuckle chuckle

Kayla | 9/8/2008, 4:38 pm EST

This is bull shit. If the Jonas Brothers can not take a little bash then they don’t belong with the big dogs at the VMA’s. Tell me when did a VMA host not pick on the celebs. Emenim was called “I’m in him”, Britney was told she went from the Mikey Mouse Club to the strip club, and Michael Jackson will always be teased at the VMA’s. We don’t see them crying about it. They know it comes with the show. If the Jomos can’t take it then they need to just stick with the Teen choice awards and the kids choice awards. The VMA’s are about mooning the crowd, drunkin rants, and crazy band mates climbing the sets. Get over it!!!
—————————- —-

First off they were invited to the VMA’s because they are the BIGGEST band in the world right now…………and their not the ones complaining about the bashing at all….its other people…they havnt said anything about it yet
even if they do i can understand it was insulting to their religion.

JP | 9/8/2008, 4:31 pm EST

I was going to post that the biggest loser of the night was the people who wasted their lives watching this poor shell of a legitimate music award show. After reading all the posts below, clearly the biggest losers last night are the people who got offended that a comedian made fun of a boy band for wearing chasity rings. Seriously, if you need a ring to remind yourself not to have sex with anyone until you are married then you completely lack any will power.

Why do you people watch a music award show on a channel that stopped playing music videos? Obviously, they have no clue what music artist or band is actually any good. Seriously, the big “winners” were Britney Spears and Pussycat Dolls (Who I didn’t even know released a single. I thought everybody was breathlessly waiting for a solo album from one of them.). You guys and ladies make me sad.

Jade | 9/8/2008, 4:29 pm EST

Oh for God sake, this whole thing about the “whatever” brothers needing an appology from Russell Brand because he made fun of them, is absolute rediculous. i mean what will they do if they ever get bad press or if a photographer takes a bad photo, what will everyone who says anything bad about them need to write a formal apology? GET OVER IT! all this about the one who’s 15, well if hes that young to be made fun of about sex why wear a ring symbolising not having it, if he is too young to do it, then he shouldn’t need to wear something like that if he wont be experiencing yet!

ITS 2008 PEOPLE, Russell brand is a comedian who tells jokes, except people havent moved away from jokes starting with “knock, knock”! if people actually stoped being so up-tight, maybe you could see the funny side of things!

And aint it funny that the same people “defending” the Joana Brothers, are the same people saying Britney isnt a deserving winner, just because she had a melt-down doesnt mean she cant get back up and start again! thats the thing with people these days, they never want to see anyone happy or success. she made mistakes, shes only human.

But who cares what i think, im just another person who will get called an idot for sticking up for Russell Brand and Britney spears….

Anonymous | 9/8/2008, 4:29 pm EST

For everyone that’s complaining about Brand talking about the Jonas Brothers… You see, the thing about comedians is, well, they tell jokes. I’m sorry you don’t understand that.
—————— —– —– ——

i think we all get that he was TRYING to be funny, but he wasn’t! its not a matter of being a huge fan of the jonas brothers and that saying anything against them is horrible…..no…its a matter of the insultment to their religion!
this was a promise they made to themselves and god
They dont want ppl to make a big deal about it….this is probally the exact reason why in interviews they ask to change the subject when ppl talk about it.

i think this was the worst vmas ever it was so boring i think brand was way out of line with his “jokes” about the jonas’s. no one there thought it was funny either i never heard anyone ever laugh i know i was not. and i think it was great that jordin stod up for them. the only good part was the jonas brothers performance.

The Eye in the Sky | 9/8/2008, 4:16 pm EST

Promise Rings? What other self-righteous accessories can we possibly apply to ourselves? How about just being who you are, standing up for yourself and saying eff u to making statements by wearing rings and bracelets. Just don’t have sex for christsakes. I support this, I support that.

We all want to make ourselves seem newsworthy with our “philanthropy.” it’s all a cover. But everybody has to ride the wave. I was at the vmas last night and every aspect of the show is manpulated. I’m sure Britney spears won those awards back in June. With ratings for the last few vmas at rock bottom and brit being the most famous person on earth, why not make it her show this year? Comeback? C’mon. Her videos sucked donkey…

Viacom runs the world. Whatever they want, they get.

“I would like to have seen Paramore perform live, on the VMA stage, instead of via satellite from The Whiskey A Go Go, a club that has a bit of a reputation for not being as kind to bands that are not superstars, as they are to superstar bands.”

hey smart one, they were on the “main” stage, the walls pulled away and they were there, hence russel saying see everything isn’t what it seems 500 times before and after their performance.

who cares about the Jonas brothers.
if the ring thing and no sex until marriage is so sacred, why even bring it up at a press conference? so duh you’re gonna get remarks about it.

what was with lady gagas wig on xtina?

rihanna sucked majorly.

and no more kid rock and lil wayne ever again.

and russel was hilarious. seiously go watch forgetting sarah marshall.

go democrats! i agree w brand 100%

and Britney rocked it, she deserved the 3 awards. her opening skit was cute, i was actually giggling, and when she one video of the year i legit went “woot!”.

shes back and u all r hattteeerrrzzzzz! so :p

Annie | 9/8/2008, 3:33 pm EST

I love Russell Brand. He delivered exactly what he normally delivers, just a bit less rank last night.. If you don’t want people to have an opinion, then don’t let the world know your business.. (Jonas Brothers) MTV SUCKS. Bring back the 70’s to MTV.. There’s too much absolute “Shit” on that channel these days. My ranting is over now!!!!

Myranda | 9/8/2008, 3:23 pm EST

okay I to some extent understand where the people saying its the VMAs not Disney Channel are coming from, a little.
I would guess the Jonas Brothers knew going into this that it would be more to handle than Disney! But come on no one goes into an event expecting to be bashed and torn apart about anything especially there belief and having morals!
Okay since when is it okay to make fun of people from being good role models, having standard and morals! I mean come on!
Keving is not a kid he is 21 and joe isnt a kid really anymore at 19 but OMG Nick Jonas is 15 for crying out loud!
Brand thought he was funny by making fun of a 15 year old because he chooses not to have sex! i mean seriously that is someone who has no morals or scrupals! and im gunna go out and say most, not all of the people who think that what Brand did was okay are not even going to know what scrupals and morals are! I mean i was soo looking forward to that night and he made the whole thing SOO political and trashy i was disgusted! I mean what moron says and that teenage sex is okay especially when your taking about a 15 year only COME ONN!
adn at the end of the show that was not a apology! and if he thinks it was then hes even more of an idiot that i thought he was!
I was completely turned off by the whole thing!

and I was sooo happy when Jordin Sparks supported JB and said there was nothing wrong with purity rings!
I wear a purity ring and i can guarantee after listening to Brand and seeing what kind of perosn his is complaired to the Jonas Boys and Jordin SParks my ring is something im even more proud to wear!

sleba | 9/8/2008, 3:08 pm EST

The jonas brother kid only being 15 doesnt matter his “purity ring” is a vow not to have sex untill marriage witch is a rediculous and unnessisary endevor these days and comics are the only people cynical enough to see through the bull shit

brittney spears = 3 awards????!!!?!??
i dont even know enough “4 letter words” to describe my anger…

NONE | 9/8/2008, 2:59 pm EST

It was just what they wanted to show as a theme, the real fake world. That was ok.

jbloveee | 9/8/2008, 2:46 pm EST

alright whoever said the jonas brothers “had it coming” publisizing about their rings, clearly doesnt know them. the jonas brothers dont like being asked about their rings and dont like the attention brought to them because of it. so next time get your facts straight : ) oh and jordin sparks i love you

horrible | 9/8/2008, 2:44 pm EST

sure maby the jonas brothers shouldn’t be on MTV in some people’s oppinion but still…the whole nite the seriously stupidly un-funny Brand joked about them all night. which was uncalled for.

I am happy that jordan sparks stood up for them, but the fact that they are actually calling what he said and “apologie” is a total lie.

also is he aware nick is 15!!!

this VMA was pathetic =[

Manju | 9/8/2008, 2:28 pm EST

In a land where sex tapes are leaked to become popular(Paris, Kardashian), What Brand did was nothing. But I agree, his comments were just crigeworthy, but not very funny.

As for Jonas, If you don’t want people talking about your Sex life, Then don’t make a such a big thing out of it by wering a ring and publicizing it etc… They had it coming.

yeahnah | 9/8/2008, 2:24 pm EST

Hey MTV! Way to kiss Britney’s ass!

Anyone wanna take bets on how many moonmen the Jonas crew take home next year as MTV’s way of saying ’sorry’?

chuck | 9/8/2008, 2:13 pm EST

The VMAs sucked, what else is new? The show is a mirror image of what the channel has turned into. Famous for being famous people clogging the “music television” channel. MTV should only be music videos and live performances, and occassional Kurt Loder reports. The Hills chick, Paris Hilton presented last night…they dont know crap about music, so why present an award. Also, that host was a douchebag. he wasnt funny, he was obnoxious, made fun of anyone he felt he was cooler than (if you’re cooler than the Jonas brothers, that doesnt mean too much). Last nights show just exemplifies where MTV has gone since the 90’s…down the drain. they had to hire a no-name British “comedian” to host their show, remember when Chris Rock and alikes hosted and Nirvana, the Chili Peppers, and other talented bands performed and won. By the way Britney winning 3 awards was horse crap. MTV must have one person deciding who wins what, they felt bad for her embarrasing herself at their show last year, so they hooked her up this year.

Jerm1663 | 9/8/2008, 1:59 pm EST

Yeah they sucked this year. and they sucked the big one. Russel Brand wasn’t as bad as everyone is making him out to be.I do believe he shouldn’t have mixed politics in to it though. So what he picked on them. MTV isn’t the Disney channel. It’s pretty sad when MTV had to rely on them to get their ratings

Anonymous | 9/8/2008, 1:57 pm EST

Russel Brand and MTV owe JB a huge apology, and whatever Brand said at the end last night was a sad excuse for an “apology”.
And I thank Jordin Sparks for standing up for them, they deserved that.
Man, I bet they were embarrassed…

They’re amazing, and didn’t deserve to be treated that way.
Britney didn’t deserve anything.

Fred Timbalake | 9/8/2008, 1:57 pm EST

Put all the makeup and clothes on Brit you want, she’s still a backwoods hillbilly.

Mikel K Poet | 9/8/2008, 1:51 pm EST

“MTV GET OFF THE AIR…

“The allegedly beautiful people got together on a back lot in Hollywood, last night, and the results, for those of us watching at home, were mostly ugly. The supposed to be funny, host from England, Russell Somebody, wasn’t funny; he talked more about masturbation than he did music, which I guess fit in well with an inept rapper named Lil Wayne’s performance, where he grabbed his penis and balls while pacing back and forth across the stage, while muttering unintelligibly.

What is the demographic that THE MUSIC CHANNEL is after? Isn’t it primarily young teens? I know that today’s teens fully understand what masturbation is, but wouldn’t it be nice if the men making millions from their “music” channel could program more music on MTV, and less sex, both during the Video Music Awards, as the show was called, last night, and during their regular programming?

Why not let our kids tune in to Dr. Ruth to hear about masturbation, and let them see, and hear music on the music channel?

Britney Spears looked a bit like a deer caught in the headlights, the three times that she had to face the audience, and say thanks for another “Moon Man,” award. The remark was made from somebody in our house, that her record label must have bought the night for her. She was everywhere, opening the show, by introducing a performance by Rihanna, and ending it with a golf cart ride with a google-eyed Russel Nobody to, basically, end the show.

Slash, who I dig, somehow looked like a caricature of himself, last night. I mean, he was SO Slash, down, or up to his trademark black top hat.

The Jonas Brothers were billed as being incredible, and they were not, and are not. They simply are not; and I don’t care whether they are having sex or not. I simply do not care, anymore than I care about Brittney, Rihanna, Lil Wayne’s or anybody else’s sex life, especially when I am tuned in to watch a show supposedly about MUSIC.

And why is a basketball star presenting a music award? Are there not enough music personalities in the world who could have presented the Best Music Video Award, leaving Kobe Bryant to stay at home and practice dunking his ball?

I kept waiting for someone, anyone, to light my fire, to give a performance that would make me get up and say, “wow.” The closest anyone came to doing this was Kid Rock (I still stayed in my seat, though.) Funny that you have to get a guy who is old school, or maybe just down right old, in this business, the business of music, to make us almost move. Unfortunately, Kid Rock felt it necessary to show how hip he is by bringing Lil Wayne back on the stage, so that Lil Wayne could get some more camera time running around grabbing his balls some more.

Lil Wayne: the current King with no clothing, in the world of rap that sucks, that the the probably white businessmen at the record label have hoisted on the Caucasian kids in the suburbs because they’ll buy anything to be “down.”

Kanye West: the new song he presented last night, was disappointing, but sometimes songs take time to sink in, and I have faith in Kanye.

I would like to have seen Paramore perform live, on the VMA stage, instead of via satellite from The Whiskey A Go Go, a club that has a bit of a reputation for not being as kind to bands that are not superstars, as they are to superstar bands.

Remember, they even kicked out Jim Morrison for singing, “The End.”
And this is The End of this.

afton | 9/8/2008, 1:51 pm EST

I agree, the Jonas Brothers deserve an apology from MTV and Brand. What he said at the end was a sad excuse for an “apology”, and I thank Jordin Sparks for standing up for them. I think they felt embarrassed.
Not to mention, She should not have lost sto BRITNEY. Come on! Doesn’t she belong in rehab instead? She didn’t even perform, and her performance last year was an absolute disgrace and embarrassment. They should have at least won Video of the Year; everyone knows it’s a much better song and video. Britney deserved nothing.

jb | 9/8/2008, 1:50 pm EST

i loved the shocked and self righteous looks on all those rich bitches faces. I don’t feel sorry for the Jonas Brothers, abstinence only is a dangerous game to play with our nations youth, and they better get used to criticism. and Brand did everything “wrong”. Why should he dumb himself down to protect the super sensitivities of the Christian right? tell it like it is Brit man!

Pete | 9/8/2008, 1:37 pm EST

I agree with Lizitish. MTV IS boring and sad.

Russel was sooo not funny. Offensive or not, he’s just not funny. his comedic timing is horrible. I didn’t laugh once.

Yesenia | 9/8/2008, 1:31 pm EST

Russell Brand is maddd-funny.

i loved him the entireeeee night.
although i must say that the little remarks towards the JonasBros. were kinda mean but he was just having fun with it. what i really didnt about that subject was that it was constant and said more than a couple of times. yea at the begining it was HILARIOUS but then it got rude, like if he hates the fact that they are virgins. but like i said he was just having a lil bit of fun which never hurts anyone[:

i think that he made the show!

“nothing is what it seems…its all an illusion” haha[: i think he is genius.

MTV made a great choice getting him and not some stupid pop-star[:

they needed a comedian…since they decided that noone in the US was funny enough…they decided to go over-seas haha:D

Good Job, MTV!

First of all all of u people saying Brand owes the “Jomos” an apoligy need to remeber that this was the VMA’s. If any celebrity attends the VMA’s thinking that they will Not be made fun of shouldn’t be at the VMA’s. Who cares if he made fun of them. If they didn’t want people talking about their virginity, then don’t say shit about it to begin with, if it is so privite.
Secondly I am soooo happy that Britney won all three VMA’s!!! She did deserve them. It wouldn’t have ment as much had she won them when she was at the top of her game. She is coming back and we r excited for it. All u people who r hating may be a little too old maybe to be watching the VMA’s to begin with. Yes the VMA’s aren’t like they were years ago in New York, but we have to take what we get and I’m just thankful that it still includes Brit!!!

Wow Thaila had alotta hate in that post…

Come on, Jonas Bros? This is exactly the sickly, hyped-up, goody-goody garbage which seems to come out of the US far too often! I suppose they’re Scientologists too?
As for Brand - that guy is a legend here in the UK, and indeed a “forward thinker”!

Chill out | 9/8/2008, 12:39 pm EST

Come on now. It was the MTV VMAs, not the Disney channel. The show has had a history of racy performances and hosts. The Jonas Brothers and any other conservative minded viewer should’ve thought about that before attending/watching.

There is to much to say about last night’s MTV Award show-

Host:
Russell Brand!? Come on! Could MTV not afford anything better? So many things creeped me out about this guy, it wasn’t the fact that you could hardly understand him, his gay-like mannerism, weird haircut, or the fact that his jokes were far from funny… It was mostly that no one knew who he was or what made him special enough to host an MTV award show.

Performance:
My number one complain about the performances is that the best ones were performed off stage and outside the studio. Instead, they had lil wayne show off his boxers while jumping around like a monkey on stage. The only wowing performance was rihanna’s. Everyone else’s I could have forwarded through.

Award Presenters:
WTF? Half the people who present awards are actors/singers, yet, they get up there and act all shy, forget their lines, and don’t know which camera to look at. Aren’t these supposed to be professionals? I wonder how many takes they have to do when they’re performing.

Award Winners:
Diserving? I think not. I love Britney and I am happy that she is finally wearing panties to public places, but she did not deserved any of those awards. She might have years ago, but last night wasn’t her night. She was not the onlyone undeserving celebrity though.

Overall the show was Blah. Not what you would expect on a 25th award anniversary. I’m hoping Miley Cirus’s popularity dies down by the next award presentation, she is so annoying!

rukiddingme…quit being such a drama queen…the only reason why people would wear purity rings…is for attention…and they got it…they’re all happy about it.

Does anyone else think it’s funny that MTV still gives away awards for music videos, but they never play them anymore? They didn’t even hardly show any of the videos when they listed the nominees. And Christina Aguilera should never be allowed to lip-synch. The whole show was too much about stage-craft and not enough about the actual performances or singing.

RUKIDDINGME | 9/8/2008, 12:18 pm EST

Is Mr Brand aware that there is a 15 year old Jonas? I would never even think of teasing a 15 year old for not having sex! What a message Mr Brand sent out to young, impressional Jonas fans. Shame on him. MTV should have reeled him in during a commercial break. It went on all night long, for God’s sake!

Peace | 9/8/2008, 12:14 pm EST

MTV owes the Jonas Brothers an enormous apology. MTV invited them to come perform on their awards show and help increase ratings, and in return the boys were disrespected all night! What Mr. Brand COULD have talked about was their sold out tour, chart topping album, being the youngest band on the cover of Rolling Stone, or any number of their impressive achievements. I am appalled that MTV allowed that kind of disrespect to happen to an invited guest. Like I said, an apology is in order.

russel brand was really funny.he was the only good thing about the show.and the vma’s suck every year.

susan | 9/8/2008, 11:49 am EST

One of the worst VMA’s ever. The entire show sucked big time. Britney didn’t deserve win for that crappy video. She should have won years ago. That wasn’t a comeback. She’ll actually have to perform great to be a comeback. The venue sucked. Too small. Go back to a big stage. The performances sucked. What was up with christina lipsyching. Horrible show.

Lizitish | 9/8/2008, 11:42 am EST

I would not be complaining if Brand was ever funny. I was totally ready to go along with him for the ride…and I am a total Jonas fan.

Why did I spend 2 hours of my life watching it? I don’t know. I am embarrassed for myself.

MTV is boring and sad. :(
