Rage Against the Machine Ask Fans to Fight “Fascist Republican Agenda” at Fierce Minneapolis Gig

Clad in Guantanamo-style orange jumpsuits with black hoods cinched over their heads and their hands behind their backs, Rage Against the Machine were led onstage to deafening air raid sirens and cheers in Minneapolis last night. The band faced the crowd for a second — as if waiting for a firing squad — before their instruments were placed in their hands and they launched into a blistering rendition of “Bomb Track,” their heads still covered in black cloth. “We’re Rage Against the Machine from Los Angeles, California,” Zack de la Rocha said after the band had changed out of their prison-camp garb, and that was basically his only address to the crowd for the next dozen songs.

The band seemed to have even more energy than the amped-up audience on the over-packed floor, and the four tore through song after song like they were making up for the canceled free concert the police shut down the previous night. Guitarist Tom Morello and de la Rocha stomped back and forth while drummer Brad Wilk kept up a tireless mechanical thrash and bassist Tim Commerford bounced up and down for almost the entire concert. Only during the drum solo in “Sleep Now in the Fire” did de la Rocha say a few words. “I know we’re going to take care of each other this evening,” he said as security poured water on the sweaty fans packed against the fence in front of the stage. “I know we can stand here with y’all in peaceful opposition to the whole fascist Republican agenda.”

A few minutes later, before they walked offstage to regroup for their encore, de la Rocha gave his only real speech of the night. “I know a lot of you feel the way that we do,” he said. “In our small way, together we come to spots like this to interrupt and to disrupt and to not be passive in the face of all this death and destruction that this party brought to this country and the world. We won’t be party to it. And we’re going to resist it. And we’re not going to let them distract our brothers and sisters and people around the country from it. … These people are concerned about a few determined people that broke a couple of windows; this government just broke two countries! … Oh and by the way, Sarah Palin’s 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, I forgot to mention that.”

As they finished “Wake Up,” de la Rocha added, “I don’t know what you all are going to do tonight afterward, but I hope you all leave peacefully… but you don’t have to be passive! You don’t have to let anyone put their hands on you.”

After an encore featuring “Killing in the Name” left an arena bristling with middle fingers, the band stood and faced the audience one last time. This time, instead of looking like victims of a firing squad, the effect was more like posing for a yearbook photo — the four stood smiling, their arms around each other’s shoulders.

When Target Center emptied into the streets, crowds stood across from lines of riot, bike and mounted police. Some protestors went on to lie on the ground while others held a flag. The police reinforced their lines and the two sides faced off for about 30 minutes between the First Avenue nightclub and Minneapolis Hard Rock Café. Finally, the police allowed a crowd of about 200 to march away from the Target Center towards the center of downtown Minneapolis. (The group reportedly dwindled as they marched and the protest ended in the arrests of 102 people.) Less than a block away, at a RNC party thrown by the Minneapolis St. Paul Host Committee, one middle-aged woman dressed in white looked down on the protestors from the restaurant’s second floor windows, “Where are their mothers?” she asked.

Set List:

“Bomb Track”
“Testify”
“Bulls on Parade”
“People of the Sun”
“Know Your Enemy”
“Bullet in the Head”
(Katrina song)
“Born of a Broken Man”
“Guerilla Radio”
“Ashes in the Fall”
“Calm like a Bomb”
“Sleep Now in the Fire”
“Wake Up”
[encore]
“Freedom”
“Township Rebellion”
“Killing in the Name”

I am amazed at how angry people are over RATM. They are just trying to stir people up and get them to think more.

When are people going to realize that pure capitalism and pure communism are both impossible? Neither is ever going to happen in the future and never has in the past. So lets stop calling things that human nature completely takes out of the picture evil; instead call them irrelevant.

Petes | 9/15/2008, 11:51 pm EST

Zach and Rage are a JOKE. This country is awesome and was founded by men who had the history to set the groundwork that is necessary for a civilized society. I agree that there need to be some changes in government, but OVERLY drastic changes could be the beginning of the end for our US. Rage, and what they appear to stand for, are rediculous (good musicians, lack of culture).

Blake | 9/15/2008, 5:09 pm EST

It’s telling that I used to think RATM were brilliant… when I was 14. Now they sound like college freshmen. No one who liberally peppers their speech with the word “fascist” can be taken seriously by any thinking person. Tell survivors of the Third Reich that the US is in the throes of fascism, and see what kind of a response you get. “Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me” has all the depth and intelligence of an anarchy symbol on the backpack of a high school mall goth.

STu | 9/11/2008, 4:58 pm EST

I love rage. And I was at that concert. And I am for most of the things they say. BUT I also think for myself so people that say RATM fans don’t think for themselves? Well your wrong so stop judging everyone, all the damn republicans care about is themselves and oil and profits. I don’t stand for a government that rules this way. I don’t care what anyone says.

“FUCK YOU I WON’T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!”- Rage Against the Machine

STu | 9/11/2008, 4:45 pm EST

Rage is a very brave band to speak out to everyone how they feel, and how poor and middle class citizens feel about politics because rich politicians won’t listen to them. So that’s why RATM signs a bigger label so they can get noticed by more people. And tell them its okay to feel this way about the U.S.

b | 9/10/2008, 2:42 pm EST

screw them and their bullcrap, did anyone see anyone protesting the DNC? no because we are not a bunch of crazy radicals who won’t solve anything anyway.

Tom Gordon | 9/8/2008, 2:00 pm EST

Rage! Standing up for 13 year olds everywhere! Rebel, too, if you have time.

Somewhere In The Middle | 9/8/2008, 12:41 pm EST

While I have always been a fan of RATM, does anyone else think it’s a little hypocritical of them to chastise the US for being an evil empire that terrorizes and kills people all over the world, yet they praise Che Guevera who brutally and viciously killed anyone that opposed his and Castro’s plans in Cuba?

Dante - some of these fascist totalitarian states you mentioned have puppet leaders installed by the CIA, read the right history.

As for doing what the music industry does - music is a form of expression. It is not the only thing that can move people.

Who do you listen to? The TV. What do you read? The newspaper.

Guess what? They are all owned by the same corporate media conglomerates in collusion with none other than the government you seem to be in favor of.

And I do have my own opinion. I need to step out character and say this - Dante is D for Dumbass!

“We are Rage against the machine from Los Angeles California, and we hate white people although 95% of our audience is white, dont mind that..just keep banging your heads aimlessly in the pit”—that is how Rage should start their concerts….

dood | 9/7/2008, 10:41 am EST

commies suck. nuff said.

Thanks giving | 9/7/2008, 10:03 am EST

Let’s pause now to give thanks to the Republican Party, God’s Party for the following:
1. Lying about weapons of mass destruction and invading Iraq which has resulted in the deaths of mostly Iraqi citizens and over 4,000 American soldiers.
2. Letting 911 happen so they could invade Iraq & Afghanistan
3. For spending us into oblivion
4. For making sure gays & lesbians aren’t treated equal
5. For reversing over 200 laws that were protecting our air, water & soil from their corporate polluting partners.

God's Will | 9/7/2008, 9:59 am EST

Thanks, US Government, for letting 911 happen so we could use it as an excuse to invade Iraq.
Thanks, US Government, for letting Pearl Harbor get bombed so we could go to war with Hitler & Japan.
Thanks, US Goverment, for starting a war in Vietnam and killing all of those people.
Praise Jesus!

GD | 9/7/2008, 1:38 am EST

can’t this just be about the music? why did it have to get all violent? democrats are far from communists, just like republicans are far from fascists. sure, they have objectionable traits, but they’re not a hardline as the koreans or the nazis are they? it doesn’t matter if you’re democrat or republican, what matters is that you’re american. love each other, and love the world!

chomsky - Do you have any opinions of your own, or do you just do what the music people tell you to do? Rage - tell me how unjust the world is! Eddie Vedder - what should I do with my unborn child? Sheryl Crow - how bad is nuclear energy?

Dante | 9/6/2008, 6:59 pm EST

perchecreek - the only reason people suffer from shortages of resources is because of fascist totalitarian regimes like in Cuba, Venezuela, Somalia, Iran, and on and on.

Face it: the Palin kid screwed (and screwed up), and now her family is living according to its beliefs. They are taking responsibility for their actions. I realize that is a rare thing these days, so I thought it worth pointing out…

Chomsky | 9/6/2008, 6:13 pm EST

Dante - I just talked to the Dept. of Education and they want their money back.

perchecreek | 9/6/2008, 5:11 pm EST

Sarah Palin’s daughter’s pregnancy *is* a political issue. Gov. Palin opposes sex education, birth control, and favors ‘abstinence’ education. Her daughter’s pregnancy was unplanned, and Gov. Palin has had five children. In a world closing in on 7 billion people, one that is plagued by resource shortages and war, such beliefs and actions are a sign of either gross ignorance, or, worse, religious zealotry. A person who believes such nonsense as Gov. Palin does is not fit to hold public office.

Chris | 9/6/2008, 3:06 pm EST

If you look at their ideas, Obama is waaaaaay closer to being a communist than McCain is to being a fascist….just goes to show how little people in the entertainment industry actually know about politics

Shanda | 9/6/2008, 1:43 pm EST

God they are so right!! We can’t express our disdain for the government, burn flags, worship God, or not, vote, get food from a government that holds it while we starve, drive(if we are women), be killed for “honor”, get caned for spraying graffetti, look at anything we want on the internet, read only government approved books, be stoned if someone says we had an affair on our husband, get beheaded if we don’t worship the “correct way”, the list goes on and on.
Yes this country is horrible. I am so glad that I live in a place like Cuba, because Fidel was so “cool”. That’s why all my realatives risked their lives to get to that Great Satan called America.
People get real! Americans have become a bunch of spoiled brats. Thank God, or a least your parents that you were born here. Ingrates!

fEnDeR | 9/6/2008, 1:15 pm EST

He said th Palin comment with a sh@t ton of sarcasm, it was also a bit of a jab at the backasswords morality of the republican party

REPUBLICANS!

Wake up, douchebag.

Dante | 9/6/2008, 11:35 am EST

Noam/Chomsky/wtf you are..

You are right. RATM sucking in all that money while whining about the unfairness of our system is not ironic. It is hypocritical. Point well taken.

randon taoist | 9/6/2008, 11:23 am EST

The truth is available for you to find. Once our collective consciousness creates a sustained focus, a cathexis, on the true nature of our reality, all of the falseness, the illusory tv world and everything else will fall away and disappear like snow in the spring time. Good morning everyone and good luck!

Keep raging, boys, but remember, it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool that to open your mouth and remove all doubt. I have bought my last RATM disc, until they can learn what the term “fascism” really means, and in 2008, in the USA, it means “Barak Obama.”

Noam | 9/5/2008, 9:36 pm EST

To Dante and whoever else agrees with him - what you said about RATM being ironic in their bashing of the capitalists while being millionaires themselves…

Your statement is completely illogical, you just contradicted yourself. You have to understand politico-economic principles.

I cannot vouch for RATM’s financial intentions - they could be greedy as well but I will say this…

You are stating for RATM or any “rich” critic of capitalism to forsake their own personal finance just so they can have a voice in this “idiotic” democracy.

An outlandish request.

Are you saying that only the poor and or middle class qualify as the only voices against the powerful?

That is exactly what is happening, it’s the poor and powerless who are being ignored and silenced. It doesn’t have to be RATM, just whoever the advocate is with an altruistic cause for the voiceless or in this case ignorant, needn’t be condemned

As an antecedent, the capitalistic ideology is in everyone who wants to enrich their financial status. It has been in you since you started attending the state-sponsored American school system. Even if you didn’t’ go to school, you will still be inculcated the capitalist mentality through other means like the media.

The real question is: are you going to abuse it?

Many bands have blessed us with great music started from meager beginnings. It’s inevitable some of them abused their commercial success which is attributable to the “capitalistic” corporate power brokers of the music industry.

John you are a complete moron. The Offspring and Buckcherry are better bands than Rage? You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. To each his own I guess, but Oasis? Really? And to all you people who keep bringing all the money Rage has made into this debate you obviously just don’t get it. Real bands and real musicians don’t care about the money they care about the music. They got rich because they make great music, period. And when they really blew up they broke up. I didn’t see Zach de la Rocha pimping Pepsi products. And to all of those whose first reaction is to say “love it or leave it”, try to remember that the idea is that you can believe and say whatever you want in this country without fear of persecution. It’s narrow minded idiots like yourselves that have made us the most hated nation in the world. Like Zach says “WAKE UP!”

Ghandi | 9/5/2008, 1:51 pm EST

First the right-wing says celebrities should keep their mouths shut(unless they agree with them), then they say you should leave this country if you don’t like one thing about it.
Now they are saying rich people can’t care and speak out against lying, thieving murderers that are in The White House at the moment.

Rolling Stone Propaganda | 9/5/2008, 1:38 pm EST

Rage Against the Machine ALSO hate Barack Obama & the Democrat Party. They went to Denver last week to protest the DNC. Rolling Stone is misrepresenting this to make it look like Rage is only opposed to the Republican Party. The D. Party and the R. Party are separate wings on the same bird of prey. Both parties are controlled by the same corporate interests, both parties are pro-war and anti-civil liberties. Barack Obama is a Judas goat and a false savior. WAKE UP.

waylon | 9/5/2008, 12:47 pm EST

I agree that RATM is one of the best bands in the past decade. Marello is one of the most creative guitarist and Zach lyrics are incredible. For those of you who think Rage is just against the RNC you obviously dont get the message or listen to the lyrics. Rage doesnt promote violence or anarchy. Their message is for people to open their eyes and question what you hear or see on tv and the radio. For Example the song “Wake Up” Our goverment has been filled with corruption and wrong decisions that the people dont agree with. As you can see people afterwards protested the piecefully.

I love America but sometimes our leaders forget about what American stands for. We do not stand for torture, unjust wars, and hypocracy. Listen to the lyrics for once and you will realize.

By the way. Who was the major idiot that put kid rock as one of the greatest musicians as of late. Im sorry but If you have a third grade vocabulary you are automatically exempt from the list. Thanks for your time.

I think it’s great that Rage is exersising they’re voices in music and through their concerts. Obviously a few agree with their political beliefs and enjoy their sound.

If you don’t like their message, feel free to not listen. It is after all, a free country. But if you can’t stand the heat, maybe you’re the ones who need to get out of the kitchen.

Ralph Hilborn | 9/5/2008, 10:01 am EST

I don’t think any one of you has it quite right, but a couple of you are close. for the comments on whethere we “have it bad in the US” as opposed to other even more oppressed nations, Yes, of COURSE we do… on the surface… but if this TRULY is supposed to be the greatest nation on earth we should be making the greatest example of how to be a great nation, and that is by FAR not the case. We as a nation have been around for a drop in the bucket on the global timescale and we still have a lot of growing up to do. This country is like a spoiled rich kid who gets a porsche for his 16th birthday only to crash it two weeks later because he was getting road-head from his equally pathetic coke-head girlfriend… and then mommy and daddy just give him a new BMW to replace it so he doesn’t look bad to his friends… and THAT’s a point that needs to get across. AS A WHOLE this country hasn’t EARNED what the founding fathers initially hoped for, we’ve taken it, trashed it and pointed the finger at everyone else but ourselves.

Tapo | 9/5/2008, 9:49 am EST

Iconoclast421,

You ‘re probably right, I don’t understand me either, Zinn does.

A perpetual name-dropping debate on who is better is pointless without quantifiable measures in place (i.e. Most album sales, Best song for making out, etc.)

Rage against the machine belongs in the “Who has the loudest and strongest dissenting voice against the establishment” category.

In any case, Music is a preference. Enjoy it.

Tom | 9/5/2008, 8:57 am EST

Pretty arrogant for the band to say we have it rough here in the states. Have they ever left the country? They should promote piece, not anger. Instead, they get the crowd all riled up and then contradict by saying go in peace.

Most of those bands came out more than 2 decades ago (i.e. Metallica, U2, Bon Jovi, etc.)

As for the ones that actually came out after 1988, your list is laughable! (My Chemical Romance?!! AUDIOSLAVE?!!! Kravitz?!!! I like some of those bands, but they still don’t hold a candle to the ingenuity of Rage!)

John | 9/5/2008, 1:39 am EST

John, your list was half plausible and half laughable. Avenged Sevenfold? My Chemical Romance? Alter Bridge? Creed? Dave Matthews Band? Fuel? Poison? Motley Crue? Bon Jovi? Kid Rock? Dashboard Confessional? Lenny Kravitz? Linkin Park? There are other ones that can’t hold a candle that you mentioned, but those stick out in particular, especially Creed.

MN MOM | 9/5/2008, 12:47 am EST

To the one middle-aged woman dressed in white who looked down on the protestors from the restaurant’s second floor windows, asking “Where are their mothers?”. this middle aged mother was at home and disgusted when she found out her 17 year old son who was attending the concert with his 27 year old cousin were harrassed by Riot police on there way to the concert. My son was approached by a police officer who stated “you can’t have that” referring to the camera my son was carrying. My son negotiated with the officer to take the battereies in exchange for him keeping his camera. The officer took the batteries from the camera and tossed them into the street, I beleive here in USA littering is gainst the law! I think the lady in white needs to come down from her cocktail party and go into the streets for adose of reality. At the end of the concert de la rocha told his fans which included my son and nephew “The police are the ones out of control, tonight when we leave lets show them we have more restraint then they do”. What were the closing words at your cocktail party? ” Hey all it’s ok if our 17 year old daughters are out getting pregnant” I would rather have my son attend a RATM concert than one of your Replublican cocktail parties!

GPDchris | 9/5/2008, 12:28 am EST

Wait. They hate “fascists” like Bush, but they like communist dictators?

I’m not understanding that.

But if they lived anywhere else in the world, they wouldn’t have the freedom to speak about how facist their leader is. They forget that, because they are rich multi-millionaires, and very, very, hypocritical.

Their message is so full of holes it looks like my grandfather’s underwear… Don’t ask.

But, you’ve got to hand it to them, from 1992 to 1999, their
music was pure adrenaline.

“Calm like a bomb” is everything someone needs to get going in the morning. Piss on coffee.

yo | 9/5/2008, 12:26 am EST

OBAMA 08, I DONT GIVE A CRAP ABOUT RAGE OR MCCAIN. OBAMA 08 OBAMA 08

Jeff | 9/4/2008, 11:55 pm EST

Absolute, hands down, best concert I’ve ever been to. Politics aside, as hard as it may be, the whole band had the crowd wrapped around their fingers. Zack preached peaceful protest and for the most part it was. Had Zack wanted to incite a riot, take no doubt that Minneapolis would still be burning.

Great Band Loaded with Irony | 9/4/2008, 11:43 pm EST

The great irony of Rage’s career is this: if they lived in some of the countries they have lauded in the past (Cuba, East Germany, etc.) and voiced the kind of dissent they voice toward our government, they would be looking at life from the inside of a prison cell. As they espouse these ideals, yet face no legal repercussions for them, it only accentuates what is so great about America.

I do think that there should be something insulting to anyone who has suffered under a fascist regime when a guy generalizes Republicans as fascists while he plays in a band with a guy who seems to pat Fidel Castro on the back every chance he gets; and yet, anyone who would say, “Rage doesn’t belong in America” doesn’t get what America is supposed to be about it.

Rage on, Rage. I think you’re so far off it’s ridiculous, but we’re happy to have you here.

roberto | 9/4/2008, 11:23 pm EST

Protesters are an example of how many morons we have in this country, all of them have a low IQ, protested in Denver and now in st.paul, when will they learn their idiotic views are not welcome.

maze | 9/4/2008, 11:22 pm EST

I am very angry about the way Sarah Palin’s daughter has been treated. There is something very wrong with our headline obsessed, gossip crazy society. Leave the poor girl alone.

Houston, Brooklyn, NY | 9/4/2008, 11:13 pm EST

Rock and Roll is about rebellion and change. It’s certainly the furthest thing from the conservative point of view. Do you think The Beatles would back Bush or McCain w/ war agendas? Dude, they’re lucky it’s not the 60’s.

Ignorant Americans | 9/4/2008, 10:57 pm EST

Those of you idiotic americans that dare belittle Rage Against The Machine, should be cut down and hung. They are the the shining example of the best thing ABOUT your hypocritical arrogant country. The ability to fight against the wrong, and not be punished for it. To the guy that said Rage ISN’T one of the better bands of the last 20 years, you can’t name too many more. To the ones who spit that the band are communists…you should have to wear helmets for the rest of your lives…because anyone with that low of an IQ has to ride the short bus anywhere they go. And because they’re what, mid 30’s, that means you can’t be angry with a cause? You MUST be 20 something and have a gimmick? THEY STARTED this amazing form of Metal Rap. Your country should be burned, and only the intelligent should be allowed to survive. You are what’s wrong with the world.

John | 9/4/2008, 10:52 pm EST

haha I cant believe some of the morons here are ragging on Guns N Roses while saying how great Rage against the machine is….haha rap metal…awesome…was Fred Durst there too? Guns N Roses are rock legends…and still sell millions of records a year despite not releasing anything in over a decade….and to the tool who was ragging on GNR for taking so long to put music out, you are aware of the fact that it took Zack De La Rocha a decade to finally put out 5 or 6 songs on that shitty Lion EP right? and Zacks music doesnt even take any talent whatsoever to write or perform…

John | 9/4/2008, 10:44 pm EST

Rage Against the Machine? what is it 1996? dont tell me that there are kids who still buy into these millionaires preaching….

Changing of the Guards | 9/4/2008, 10:29 pm EST

All you have to do is watch the RNC and the protestors being escorted out of there right now on live television to know that dissent is almost never allowed anymre in anyway shape or form in this country… or the arrests of those news reporters the other day…

for shame

Lol | 9/4/2008, 10:25 pm EST

In Denver, during the DNC, Rage concert and the march afterwards was peaceful, cops were handing out water bottles to the protestors.

like you care | 9/4/2008, 9:35 pm EST

The riot police should have broken both arms of all the protesters so they would know what it feels like to be McCain. Or the protestors could just get on their knees for Bush like he does.

matt | 9/4/2008, 9:28 pm EST

Rage are artists. And for all those complaining about RS having a liberal bias - reality has a liberal bias. Get used to it.

Nothing Wrong | 9/4/2008, 9:23 pm EST

There’s nothing wrong with a little rebellion and taking a stand against the haves. Mccain is no maverick, never has been. He’s all about “country” but the country includes THE PEOPLE. He only cares about war-starting wars and having our people die for nothing. Yet if these soldiers return, what do they return to? Mccain has not helped the veterans with issues they’re facing-ie: health care, post traumatic issues, etc. But he’s the maverick! He’s the patriot! Bullshit!!! The fact that he was a pow would lead one to the conclusion that he would support the soldiers needs but he doesn’t even defend them and he’s “putting the country first”?What has he done for the people? Absoulutely nothing! The rich get richer, the war will wage on with no end in sight, americans still won’t be able to get quality health care if they get care at all, gun violence will rise more and more because of a misconception of the true meaning of amendment 2, roe v wade will be overturned, more homes will be foreclosed, unemployment and recession will continue and gas prices will rise well past the $5/gallon mark. If that’s the country you envision, then you’re not really for the people, are you? Fuck Mccain! Fuck the republican party!! And fuck you if you share the republican mentality!

Cuba | 9/4/2008, 9:04 pm EST

What kills me is how they reformed, and yet can’t be bothered to write any new material. What, 8 years of Bush hasn’t given you anything to write about? Instead they play songs written during the Clinton Adm., about uprisings in Mexico.

matt h | 9/4/2008, 9:02 pm EST

rage is the machine … what a joke, these guys pocket millions and rant a bunch of ignorant dime-store karl marx they thought they heard a professor say was radical one time.

ignorance | 9/4/2008, 8:58 pm EST

zac—- i agree, look at rage against the machines symbolism, they support communism and facism with thier misrepresentation to the uneducated americans….”its cool to wear a hammer and sicle t-shirt” nowadays. yea its great to have the freedom to do whatever you want, but all they are trying to do is sell records and be heard…not represent ideals of democracy

Hill | 9/4/2008, 8:27 pm EST

I love when people that don’t listen to a band feel like they have enough information to become critics. If you don’t like the band we don’t need your opinion, trust me no one cares. The show was great and some of the most fun you could have, but was purposely over hyped by the media. They wanted trouble. Why else would they send riot police to circle the building? The presence of authority was suppose to insinuate anger in the concert goers. They want to blame someone for something going wrong and RATM are the perfect people for them to blame. Nothing happened so they feel the need to arrest simple protesters marching down a street to spark some sort of news. Apparently people speaking their minds was frightening and unnatural to the Republican Party.
And the comment about Sarah Palin’s daughter is because her platform is teenage abstinence. Hard to preach when your 17-year-old is knocked up.

Sad.

Rage is Ok | 9/4/2008, 8:01 pm EST

But also check out Dylan’s folkie period, Lou Reed’s New York album, Iggy Pop’s I’m a Conservative, a lot of Zappa, Billy Bragg, the Clash

george | 9/4/2008, 7:18 pm EST

say what you want about the current guns, but the original had one of the best rock albums of all time.

Comfort | 9/4/2008, 7:17 pm EST

Atleast I can take comfort in the fact that the vast majority of Americans aren’t lost little fuck ups like those who would actually think this is cool! Where’s the intelligence and logic?? A bunch of over the hill rockers is all I see. Oh and Rollingstone, Pretty sure it should be RATM VS. The Cops, I highly doubt the republicans give two fucks about these douche-bags! I also take comfort that this “music” magazine is sinking faster than Obama’s campaign!

Iconoclast421 | 9/4/2008, 7:16 pm EST

Studying Chomsky does not make you a democrat. If it does then you probably dont comprehend him very well.

freedom | 9/4/2008, 7:14 pm EST

likes communist dictators?

Im pretty sure he doesnt like bush.

Jeff | 9/4/2008, 6:55 pm EST

“Oh and by the way, Sarah Palin’s daughter is pregnant” was a sarcastic reference - it’s all the media cares about in spite of us just “destroying two countries” as he put it.

It’s called sarcasm. Google it.

Zack - Super Genius | 9/4/2008, 6:49 pm EST

This guy is another Communist college brainwashed hack. He makes millions from evil corporations and disparages them in the next breath. Hypocrite! Punk with big mouth. He loves Communist dictators that throw their people in prisons for uttering the wrong syllable. George Bush HASN’T! Read my lips moron, HE HASN’T!!! Keep revising history idiot. Take a bath. I know you make enough moola to pay the water bill.

WAKE UP | 9/4/2008, 5:56 pm EST

I am bubbling over with enthusiasm after reading the recent news stories and watching the YouTube videos. Somehow, I knew that RAGE would set the stage in the fight against passivity and stand up against tyranny at the place where it all stems from: The RNC.

What this group has accomplished is substantial and the movement continues to grow. The first time I ever had an inkling that all was not right came to me through the lyrics of Bombtrack. What began as a slow process of wondering gave birth to a fierce passion for research through anthropology, sociology and U.S. History classes. RAGE led me to the prolific Noam Chomsky, David Barsamian and Free Speech Radio News and much, much more. RAGE has led me to seek the TRUTH. I am forever grateful and am so proud to hear them getting the message out to the people.

O Samma | 9/4/2008, 5:55 pm EST

Chomsky, your a democrat

Jungleland | 9/4/2008, 5:51 pm EST

Alice | 9/4/2008, 5:23 pm EST

Yet another awesome performance by Rage. Well done boys, well done.

Dalton - you’re a Republican

mike b. | 9/4/2008, 4:59 pm EST

and does anyone know whether that “Sarah Palin’s daughter” comment supposed to be a jab at the media’s coverage of irrelevant issues, or does he seriously think people should be concern with that? what he meant was probably a lot more clear if you were there.

Ole Olson | 9/4/2008, 4:58 pm EST

This was a great concert (I was there!). However I’m disappointed with the attitude taken by the RNC party attendee quoted here. Instead of trying to understand and work with people who have different political views than she does, she goes out of her way to patronize and belittle them. And that’s a shame.

mike b. | 9/4/2008, 4:56 pm EST

i never understood the appeal of rage against the machine. they’re a pretty mediocre rock band with strong but overly-simplistic political views, and whether you blame them for it or not, they encourage their fans to not think for themselves.

Swingline | 9/4/2008, 4:54 pm EST

hahaha, he said Guns n Roses. And in order for them to wipe that floor, they’d need about 15 years and tons of re-do’s before they get it right.

Nice job of talking musical relevance with a band who still hasn’t followed up the “Spaghetti Incident”.

Ben | 9/4/2008, 4:50 pm EST

Rage totally rule, but the whole “Oh and by the way, Sarah Palin’s 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, I forgot to mention that.” is pretty weak, I mean so what?

d | 9/4/2008, 4:37 pm EST

The members of RATM really should be electro-shocked for their own good.

Monk Epochs | 9/4/2008, 3:58 pm EST

I was at the show - awesome stuff from guys purported to be “hacks.”

Tom | 9/4/2008, 3:51 pm EST

““Where are their mothers?” she asked.”

Probably working.

Wow | 9/4/2008, 3:45 pm EST

H Bomb,

Best band to come out the past two decades? Do you listen to any other music?

Rage is a good band, the “best in the last 2 decades”? Nah.

Your opinion is your opinion, just doubt the majority feels the way you do, bud.

Dalton | 9/4/2008, 3:38 pm EST

Best band of the past two decades?? Haha, give me a fucking break! Guns N Roses and other bands would wipe the fucking floor with these hacks. They’re pathetic because of their obviously limited view of politics in this country! They’re essentially doing what they claim the “evil” republicans do. They’re trying to brainwash the youth by using sweeping generalizations against their enemies. Oh and did I mention their middle aged hacks doing this, not 20 somethings.

H. Bomb | 9/4/2008, 3:29 pm EST

Dalton, please expand why exactly you call the best band to come out of the past 2 decades “pathetic?”

Dalton | 9/4/2008, 3:17 pm EST

Rage are pathetic! That’s all!!

Ragin Hillbilly | 9/4/2008, 2:53 pm EST

Would have been nice to hear something about Gorki Aguila, the imprisoned Cuban punk rocker, considering Tom Morello was down in Cuba just a few years ago on a love fest junket to his hero Castro. I suppose its a bit too dangerous to speak truth to real power.

Jesse | 9/4/2008, 2:49 pm EST

wow! Rage are so cool!
