In the Studio: Fall Out Boy Face Fame on New CD

“This is the first time the paparazzi made it to the gate!” Pete Wentz exclaims, rushing into the L.A. studio where Fall Out Boy are working on the follow-up to 2007’s platinum Infinity on High. “We recorded in secret. The tabloids think I just go to Starbucks and hang out at clubs — they don’t know what I do for a job.”

Working with Neal Avron — the primary producer of FOB’s last two records — the quartet made a decision to dial back the heavily multitracked sound of their last album. “With the Babyface collaborations, the R&B influence and vocal acrobatics, Infinity really opened up the lane,” Wentz says. “This time, we focused on making an ambitious record without giving the impression of making an ambitious record.” That proved challenging. “Making this record has been painful,” says singer Patrick Stump. “Pete and I fought more than we have in a long time. I threw something across the room over a major-to-minor progression.”

The first single, “I Don’t Care,” rides a Gary Glitter-style stomp with a wry chorus: “I don’t care what you think, as long as it’s about me.” Another standout is a still-untitled power-pop cut fueled by a pingponging guitar riff. “Am I the only one that hears ELO?” Guitarist Joe Trohman asks as the song fades out. “Enuff Z’nuff’s been mentioned twice,” Stump adds, “and I have a neon peace sign.”

The title of the album, Folie a Deux, is a psychiatric term that refers to psychosis shared between two people. “It’s like when your fans want you to be crazier, so you become crazier,” explains Wentz, who says the concept fits into the record’s theme, which loosely deals with the bassist-lyricist’s growing celebrity.

With the release only two months away, FOB are still finalizing cameos — they are hoping to get Kanye West, Pharrell and Panic at the Disco — and nailing down their famously long song titles. Still, you can be sure that the disc will be ready for Election Day. “It’s going to be one of the biggest days of the year, if not the decade,” says Wentz. “Why not be a part of it?”

Ah, another mad mix of love and hate comments over Fall Out Boy. If you like ‘em, great. If you hate ‘em, get off the article. No one should like a certain type of music, it’s personal taste.
I personally like them and have a great respect for Patrick Stump.

They’re not important.
They are only important to are the masses.
Unfortunately the masses go along with anything shoved down their faces.
So their opinion is always null and void.

Exelim | 1/12/2009, 1:12 am EST

Oh, and one more thing. Chances are that the FOB haters here won’t even know what I meant by TTTYG. :D

Exelim | 1/12/2009, 1:11 am EST

Well, whatever. I like FOB well enough for me to say that their album’s pretty cool. Oh, and their not emo, no, no, no, no, NO. (P.S.: I liked their TTTYG songs better but people change, anyway. Those who do not are the true douchebag poseurs or else are ETs.)

You haters need to get a life. Just because you don’t like FOB doesn’t mean that they suck. They make awesome songs. Just move on with your life, seriously.

I think “I don’t care” is an alright song. I agree, the title of the song isn’t the exact lyrics of Drain You by Nirvana, but it’s quite close. That being said, I don’t think they were intending to “rip off” the song with that title of their new single, but were probably just inspired by that line. Like their name - inspired by the Simpsons! Even in the video, the beginning shows some dude complaining how new music has “forgotten the old ways” so to speak. Nirvana was one of those bands that went down in history, so FOB prb just referenced to it since it seemed to fit.

i think that is very interesantly the new single of fall out boy

Nick | 9/27/2008, 9:56 pm EST

well i think that people who comment on this just to be the rain on the parade need to dry up, they are a very fresh, young, yet flavored, influential band, i really like them, theyve helped me with so much without actually helping me.
the chorus “i dont care what you think as long as its about me” is NOT the exact lyrics of Drain You “i dont care what you think unless it is about me” theres a difference so shut up.
this cd is gonna own every other cd out there, so just wait for i.t

They aren’t important. They THINK they are important and that is why they fucking suck. Pete Wentz can’t play the bass to save his life, the songs are ridiculous and they need to go away forever…

Bobby | 9/7/2008, 11:21 pm EST

I agree FOB is not exactly “emo”.

Hotwax Residue | 9/7/2008, 8:12 pm EST

“I don’t care what you think, as long as it’s about me.” Hmmmm I’m sure I’ve heard that somewhere before……

Harry Peratesties | 9/5/2008, 4:35 pm EST

Pete Wentz is such a Hollywood douche. Every day in the paper he’s hanging out with John Mayer, God knows what they are doing. I’d assume they’re probably giving each other reach arounds.
Is this the music of generation Y? For real? FOB have nothing to say. Argue that point with me.

deano | 9/5/2008, 7:18 am EST

It’s way past time for Fall Out Boy to fall off the charts.

swa | 9/4/2008, 10:55 pm EST

i really like the blues/classic rock feel in the single. nice to hear them switching it up a little again. Is it just me, or does stump’s vocal range just keep getting bigger from one album to the next?
not gonna get in a fight about the important/unimportant thing.
Theyve been important to me, and i genuinely enjoy the music.
were not all supposed to feel the same types of music.

semi-wood | 9/4/2008, 10:54 pm EST

They are okay. But when does the new Soul Asylum album come out?

Dmitri | 9/4/2008, 5:36 pm EST

Do people even realize the DEFINITION of emo? This isn’t emo, get your genre’s straight.

They are a terrible band I know thats not witty but they really are and I clicked on her to tell people that like them they are terrible.

Colemacian | 9/4/2008, 4:02 pm EST

Leave it up to FOB to not come up with anything original or new. “I don’t care what you think, as long as it’s about me” are the exact lyrics to Nirvana’s song “Drain You” from their Nevermind album. Way to go boys.

Fall Out Girl's snatch | 9/4/2008, 3:57 pm EST

They are the most important band in the world. At least my brain says so.

Fall Out Girl | 9/4/2008, 3:12 pm EST

If they’re not important to YOU, I have an idea: don’t click on the article about them, duh?

So excited for this album!

Jesse | 9/4/2008, 1:49 pm EST

dyer | 9/4/2008, 12:26 pm EST

Oh yippee skippy…………..

Opie and Anthony | 9/4/2008, 11:12 am EST
