Grammy-winning country singer and Burt Reynolds’ Smokey and the Bandit cohort Jerry Reed died of complications from emphysema on Monday. He was 71. As a songwriter, Reed penned songs for Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole and scores more. In 1971, Reed won a Grammy for his own “When You’re Hot, You’re Hot.” Reed won three Grammys over his career, including two for collaborations with Chet Atkins. Reed’s segue into films helped inspire his Nashville peers like Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson and Kenny Rogers to try their hand at acting. In addition to his turn in the Smokey series, Reed was also immortalized as the rival coach in Adam Sandler’s The Waterboy and the “Phantom of the Country Music Hall” episode of The New Scooby-Doo Movies.

In the age of Disneyfied crap like Hannah Montana and High School Musical, nobody would recognize Jerry Reed. Hell, I doubt even the Toby Keith’s redneck brigade recognize what a great guitar player and songwriter Jerry Reed was.

However, I am saddened by the loss. One less talented artist dead in a year where too many talented artists have died and way too many new talented artists goes unrecognized and underappreciated.

Sadly, alot of the “good ol boys” are gone. Jerry will be, as the rest of them are, remembered by we, the old people. Granted I know the new country singers have their ways but none can ever compare to the singers that paved the way for them. Conway, Loretta, Ernest, Faron, Tammy, George, just way to many to name. My love for the OLD COUNTRY music runs deep and I am saddened that it will soon be just a memory. My prayers go out to Jerry’s family…God Bless

“theirs alot of talk going around today, bout cigarette smoking whittling your life away” That was a line from a funny Reed song, to bad its so true. Jerrys music was that of a heart felt guitar picker and a humorist. He had a variety show that was just good ole down home fun, and his movies, well he seemed to take the spotlight, he will be forever missed by me and all his fans, God bless u Jerry, and keep on keeping on in Heaven !
