I absolutely love this album. They change it up so much, from song to song, and within each song. At first I thought it might be a little bit chopped up that way, but when you’re riled up and ready to listen to some heavy metal and just rock out hard, those breaks and change-ups are fun as all hell. You can ABSOLUTELY hear the old album sounds, from Master to Lightning to Justice, to Black. It’s GREAT. And the thrash of Kill Em All and St Anger (St Anger’s only real strength). Exactly what I hoped for. I haven’t head banged in a good while but this album makes me want to real bad, as I sit here in my cubicle hahahaha

Patty | 9/4/2008, 10:57 pm EST

I’ve been waiting for an album this great for awhile. I’m tired of the wannabbes that think the faster the guitar, the more horse of a screaming voice equals something great. Metallica just showed all these so called “metal” bands how Metal should sound with this album. (coughDragonforcecough) :)

GT | 9/5/2008, 10:59 am EST

Production is weak but what did you expect from Rick Rubin!! James singing is way too polished. The riffs are not very inspiring and still sound corny and country-esque. I just saw the video The Day that Never Comes and it I find that it’s a mess! Sorry metal fans, but there is much better material out there to bang your head to. I cannot believe that there are people comparing this album to Master and Justice!! What are they smoking???

Pollard | 9/5/2008, 7:14 pm EST

I’ve just heard the six songs on the Metallica website. I’m not going to tell you that it’s a better album (based on what i have heard) than Master of Puppets. I won’t even say that all of it qualifies as metal. What’s important to stress is that there are some very intense thrash metal elements, and you can hear the bands whole discography within this album. Not entirely sure what to make of some of the obscure song structures – that’s not to say that they are not inventive, but it certainly takes some adaption to appreciate what the band are trying to do.

Forget obscure reviews from die hard metal fans, this IS decent music in general, there are some great solo’s, easily the best since even Justice and plenty of double bass to grit your teeth to.

As for you “die-hard” metal fans, go listen to “All nightmare long” and tell me, (and specifically at 5:40 onwards) that that is not pure thrash.

drew | 9/5/2008, 10:37 pm EST

GT I have a suggestion for you. Do your research on Rick Rubin… Hmmm K. He’s produced more great albums than anyone.

runtpacket | 9/6/2008, 5:20 pm EST

Wow I wonder if all these fan boi’s even listened to it. Pure shit just like St. anger. James lyrics=”shits Weak”. his voice too polished. Drums and guitar are reasonable. However every song is disjointed and does flow well.

killroym | 9/8/2008, 12:06 am EST

The songs in Death Magnetic..still remind me of St. Anger..but heavier and thrashier..there is that distinct Metallica heavy riffs in all songs.
This is mature Metallica…heavy, fast, thrash/speed..but with a heavier does of constructive and innovative song arrangements.

This is still the bets metal albums out there! Nothing comes close..i’ve yet to hear a real heavy metal band that can be compared to Metallica.
This album again reminds everyone why the have “Metal” in this band’s name !

1984rulz | 9/8/2008, 11:40 pm EST

Four words… IT’S ABOUT F#*@ING TIME! This is the best album since Justice, hands down. Let’s face it, it with the intimely passing of Cliff Burton it can never be as good as the “Holy Trinity” (Kill em All,Ride The Lightning,Master of Puppets). The old school fans have who have suffered through so much commercial garbage thought this day would never come. We had turned our backs and written this band off but Metallica has finally listened, and delivered the goods. I am now proud once again to say that I am a Metallica fan since 1985.

Camal | 9/9/2008, 12:50 pm EST

If Metallica fans don’t like this one, then they’re probably the
“perpetually critical” type that are impossible to satisfy IMO.
I won’t say that Metallica has pulled a “hare outta their ass” on this one, because it was a long time coming since the disappointing St.Anger.
I’ve never before heard a band recapture the magic like Metallica have done here. That in itself is worthy of an OBE.
I don’t really want to overanalyse the album too much because it’s already on just about every audio playing medium that I own and I just want to enjoy it for what it is.

In short sofar, I’d say that Bob Rock (the master that becomes the slave) may need to do some soul searching of his own if these results weren’t planned – otherwise he’s more of a genius than I give him credit for.

In spite of the critisisms that Rob Trujillo doesn’t get to the forefront too much on this album, it works very well. He’s obviously a great bass player and a real part of Metallica now.

Is it a sign of the times that a bunch of 40 something rich dudes need to lead the way in showing how to get aggressive in a such a positive way?
Any critisim that I have so far would be that there’s too much “diddly diddly” guitar , but nobody comes close to them in the metal arena.
Can’t wait for a Metallica tour.

Knuckles | 9/9/2008, 12:54 pm EST

I love the album if youve only heard the six songs on the website you havent heard the songs that make the album come together the opening tracks are heavy nasty thrash and the the instrumental and unforgiven III are really great songs I love the album I liked St. anger and I like a lot of other metal too but Metallica has always been my fave

Bland | 9/9/2008, 5:30 pm EST

Such a bland album, so average….This style of music sounded good a decade or two ago…In today’s world it’s just ok, Very tame metal…..will be a huge commercial failure

Danny | 9/9/2008, 10:52 pm EST

This is a good album in it’s own right. Metallica have created an album worthy of being on the shelf along with their other classic discs.

Unlike St-Anger and those ‘other ones’ everything seems to be back and heavy – especially the drums which now sound like drums unlike metal cans as they did on St-Anger.

I think you’ll enjoy it.

tennisstallion | 9/11/2008, 3:57 am EST

I’ve heard a leak of the entire 10 songs 5 times over now (and will still purchase it on Friday). Simply put, it is a stunning piece of work whether you regard it as a Metallica fan or just a general fan of metal. Every song is solid, and every song has its own distinct personality. The sound is tight and heavy. I usually judge an album twice – once on first listening, and once after about 3 full listenings. This thing scored an 8/10 on first listening and is sitting at a 9/10 after 5 plays. the scary thing is that my score is still going up, because the songs are so dense that there is always something new to discover (much like Justice). After St. Anger I don’t know that I would have chosen to produce a bunch of 8 minute long songs again, but these ones have far better structure and don’t feel at all cut-and-paste. Riff-wise, the album is strong, jamming tons of catchy riffs into each track and changing them up as they go. Lars is on his game laying down a big backbeat, attacking with a nice stinging snare, ripping it up with double-bass when required, and he even has a few moments of uncharacteristic flourish. Hammett is on absolute fire with a few solos that rank among the best of his career. Trujillo is allowed some full-forward bass in a few places and backs the album extremely well. Perhaps the most satisfying element is that James is back exclusively writing the lyrics and it shows after St. Anger’s dismal “lyrics by committee” failure. Hetfield waxes metal-poetic about death throughout, sometimes with raw anger but often with undertones of hope and redemption. This album is fantastic.

I usually prefer to speak my own thoughts and not comment on others’, but a lot of the negative stuff I’ve been reading about Death Magnetic is REALLY grating on me, especially as this album can only be viewed as utter redemption for the kings of metal.

Here is my question to everyone out there who is shouting down Death Magnetic (even though they probably haven’t heard the whole thing) and saying that it isn’t as good as “classic” Metallica: Why even try to compare this album to Justice or Master? Dudes, those albums were made OVER 20 YEARS AGO. I love them to death and still listen to them often, but come on, if there is one thing great about Metallica its that they choose to evolve and explore. Are you doing exactly what you were doing 20 years ago? Haven’t you grown? Why don’t fans (or haters) allow them that same growth? If you guys want to hear pure thrash, then go listen to any number of new bands that wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for Metallica. I know that DragonForce for some reason is gaining a following, so go try to bang your head to 200bpm programmed drums. Or better yet, pick up the new Testament and revel in another epic comeback from an 80’s pioneer of the genre.

This album, to me, gives us the best of their old-school metal heritage combined with a wicked modern edge. They are still the masters of metal, and if we are lucky we’ll get another album before 5 years go by, using all the great stuff off missionmetallica.com that didn’t make the final cut.

Thanks for reading, and please give this album a full listening with an open mind.

Misha | 9/11/2008, 9:26 am EST

Are you serious? Anyone giving any negative reviews on this album is out of their mind! This album is nothing like St. Anger! St. Anger was offbeat and had terrible lyrics. This CD goes well in the way of old Metallica albums such as Master of Puppets or Ride the Lighting. The riffs are amazing and the solos are magical. They have recaptured that sound we have all been waiting to hear. The music flows incredibly well and is rhythmical in all aspects. The drums echo with thunder and are in perfect sync with the heavy laid guitar which is perfectly laid out on every track of this CD. The vocals are also amazing as it seems that James has recaptured that soul that has avoided Metallica for the greater part of the last ten years. It would be completely acceptable for any Metallica or metal fan to “come” to this album and then go clean up 40 minutes later because they don’t want to miss a single second of the music! That is Thank you Metallica.

CloudStrife_ca | 9/11/2008, 3:32 pm EST

Ive listned to the leak as well but Im still buying the album tomorrow, a great blend of classic and new sounds, cant wait to hear them live in Vancouver BC Dec 3rd!

tennisstallion | 9/11/2008, 4:01 pm EST

Hey Cloudstrife, I’m from Vancouver too! I think the concert is December 2. General ticket sales start Saturday.

Brandon | 9/11/2008, 8:36 pm EST

great album. There are some songs on this album that will be great for a long time to come. I’m happy for Metallica, they deserve great reviews for this work.

areuserious? | 9/12/2008, 9:07 am EST

this is metallica? seriously people you need to learn something about music. this album is almost as big of a disaster as St. Anger. the songs need to be written better and influenced by something other than AA. those who say the lyrics in this album are esoteric are just plain blind to the lyrics in St. Anger. in the 25 years that metallica has been releasing albums, Hammett has not improved as a technical guitar player. he has in fact been better before this. im so sick of the cookie cutter rock and roll. (cause this sure as hell isnt metal) Hetfield still remains the worlds best rythym guitarist in my opinion, but the have seriously lost their way compared to old metallica. for all you metal fans that are looking for your saviour band, pray for Jeff Loomis to write a new album with Nevermore…

Dwayne from Nottingham | 9/12/2008, 10:00 am EST

Ok for all you retards out there that have said this album is rubbish, i will personally kick some sense into you! This album totally rocks! The anticipation of this album being released was a long time coming, and boy did they deliver! Metallica is the only band worth listening too, given that their greatest hits were in the 80’s, i still prefer that to any other band playing today. Metallica has most definatly found their sound again, and let me tell you people complex and complicated riffs and solo’s aren’t neccesarily the best choice for great music. This album works so well, and the unforgiven3 is an amazing track. Long live Metallica, the original and greatest rock band of all time!

collieennis | 9/12/2008, 11:21 am EST

its just a class album, pure and simple, pure class metal. well done metallica.

open you f*****g mind & listen to this. All the world’s analysts are here, damn it!!!

duffmanth | 9/12/2008, 2:53 pm EST

Ok so I have 2 words to describe Death Magnetic, FUCKING INCREDIBLE!! Head and shoulders above Load, Reload and that shitty St. Anger. I would say it comes close to the Black Album and Justice, but still doesn’t top their first 3 albums. To all the haters, here’s a spoon so you can eat my ass!! Welcome back Metallica, once again you rule the world!!

Rev.Death | 9/12/2008, 7:42 pm EST

Please I’ve heard a few tracks from this album I can say it’s like a recycle from all the songs in the past, come on… don’t tell me you don’t hear re-keyed riffs from Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning, and covers from Garage Days. This album is definitely a step above the last 3 albums but needs to be more original

jdet | 9/12/2008, 8:56 pm EST

This is the best Metallica album since And Justice for all. Peoplr are saying it is not like “Puppets” or “Lightning” but it is damn close. How much did Led Zepplin and other greats change from begining to end. When this band first started they were teenagers now they are 45 years old. REMBER THAT!!! I hope I am that damn cool at 45.

Im getting really bored of readin comments like ‘not like other albums’ end of the day, this new album rocks, and is much better than anybody expected. stop whining, put the cd in, turn it up and rock out.

Fan Boi #49302930 | 9/13/2008, 1:10 am EST

Let’s face it, James is too old to scream the lyrics the way he did in the 80’s, so he started polishing his voice on the black album, and this is the natural progression. We will always miss the raw-ness of Kill/Ride/Puppets, but this is pretty much as good as it gets beyond that. To me this album could have come right after …And Justice instead of the Black album and Metallica would have been the worlds greatest band in the 90’s also. The rolling stone review says it best when it points out that song structures that are not so much “verse/chorus/verse” as “long intro/heavy jam/verse/even heavier jam/chorus/bridge/wild solo/outro.”

That’s what we all loved about Metallica in the first place. Hopefully they make 3 more albums like this before retiring so I can explain to my 25 year old friends why I hated the MTV music scene for the last 15 years when they all loved it.

To all of you haters that turned their back and hated on them the last 10 years: in your face!!

Rob | 9/13/2008, 9:04 am EST

I have listened to Metallica since Kill ‘Em All, been a diehard for years, even after the dissapointments of black album to anger, they took a while to grow on me. Just didn’t want to really listen at first, like most of the anti metallica fucks. It doesn’t matter what they do anymore, they could put something out that is so crazy and technical and people would be saying they only changed to please people (although they don’t really play that way. They have always had catchy choruses etc. Just a lot more with Bob Suck.
If you look at their main influences in music it is all over the 90’s era and on… Diamond Head, Deep Purple, motorhead etc all of those blusey (metal) bands.
They always have had the “we will do what we want attitude.
Getting on to DM I had hopes it would be a better album than some of the past, to me it delivers, it is what I expected in the fact it is a reflection of everything they have done. This album is raw, heavy cool changes, harmonies, solos it screams METALLICA!!! They have always been more rock/metal in their approach. I don’t remember any of them stating they were the best thrash band in the world, people put them on that pedistal, and now want to shit on them for going more blusey rock. If they stayed the way they were people would bitch thaty they haven’t grown as a band and would stop buying their albums. It doesn’t matter what they do for some. So screw all the ( I’m a true diehard fan from the 80’s ) You are ignorant, I am too and still will buy their albums cause they F’N rock!!
And by the way metal is about aggression and power, but I could give a F@#$ about who is fastest and most technical it is about wheather or not I like it. Except for lyrics ( which don’t make me like or dislike a band) DM is their most solid effort in a long time, and it kicks ass!!! It is way better than most metal bands now a days that you can’t read the logo let alone know what the vocalist is trying to say, if anything??!!
Long live METALLICA!!!!

Evan Lambert | 9/13/2008, 3:18 pm EST

For those of you that worry about their age and how they will keep up playing the new material in the setlist, don’t forget that there are may other bands out there that are older than Metallica that are still doing it. For example, Iron Maiden are releasing albums now that are just as good as the older ones. As for Metallica, they certainly have released an album that can sit on the same shelf as the first four albums. I still believe that the St. Anger album was more or less about trying to find a way for everyone to work together. That is why the album is as bad as people say it is. No one tried to serve any of the songs.

dominik | 9/13/2008, 4:21 pm EST

album is great
like some mix style between black and and justice for all
i like that style but some people dont and they think its bad

i love it
u will se its good in other reviews

marco | 9/13/2008, 5:17 pm EST

I have 3 things to say about DM

1 – I’ve been a Metallica fan since I was a kid, and I (really… no kiddin’) like all their albums, BUT I only had that feeling of listening to something enormous, bigger than hell with three of them so far: Master of Puppets, Black Album and Death Magnetic. Don’t get me wrong, the Black Album is a great album, it’s obviously not trash metal but who cares? it’s a masterpiece of rock. MoP was a masterpiece of trash metal, DM is actually a masterpiece of metal, not trash, not heavy, not death, not black, just PURE FUCKING METAL.

2 – I doubted for a second on pushing play on The Unforgiven III… but I’m being sincere with you guys, it made me cry. Maybe I’m on a hard time of my life, but hey! that music, those lyrics… are deep, very well put together. Don’t let the title scare you away and listen.

3 – As a huge Metallica fan I have to say I NEVER EVER expected James could reach such high pitches again, I’m really really impressed with his voice on DM. A little less “clean” than before, a little more “screamy”.

So this brings me to a conclusion, the album will get a lot more favorable reviews than bad ones, but the important thing is for you to put in on a Hi-Fi stereo and cranck up the fucking volume, you’ll never regret it.

Hail Metallica!

drew | 9/14/2008, 12:28 am EST

This album is simply gold. I can’t wait to see the figures for the first month or so.
For all those fucktards who are stuck in the 80’s and keep bashin Metallica for not just rerecording the Justice and Puppets albums, fuck you. You people aren’t on Metallica’s side anymore and no one cares what you think. If Metallica cloned an album of Justice or Puppets and put it out today, you would call them unoriginal.
This is the cd everyone’s been wanting for the past 15 years and its here. So step off your self righteous soapbox about how much you hate Metallica. Nobody’s listening anymore.
The four horsemen are here and are riding harder than ever!
To all the haters: METAL UP YOUR ASS!!!

rosario | 9/14/2008, 2:33 am EST

its a great album!! best since the black album!! and i think that the thing that sets people off about this album is james voice even though i enjoy it how it is, there are people out there expecting the old school young thrash voice of the young james.. but we all must face that we will never hear his voice like that no more hes older now and he did throw his voice out in ”91 so it sounds good for all that happend to it!

osama | 9/14/2008, 2:53 am EST

K.M. | 9/14/2008, 8:24 pm EST

More money in the bank for the Meticalla trio- straight from the pockets of the parents of angst-filled 15-year olds the world over.

It would be tempting to call the album “uninspired,” but it’s quite obvious where the inspiration was behind this garbage.

Yates | 9/15/2008, 2:42 am EST

Metallica return with a NEW record in Death Magnetic. I say new because it doesn’t make the full return to the old sound. There are elements of all their previous albums on here, including St Anger, which the 2nd song kind of reminded me of, style wise.
I think the haters hate them because they think it’s cool in that especially shallow way to say they suck.
Yeah, the Napster thing happened but life is messy and people fuck up. All the dosh in the world can’t make you happy as “Some kind of monster” proved.
As someone who is not a fair weather fan, well done to Metallica. I think the record is GOOD. As a drummer, I was impressed by Lars’ parts.
This album is current not retro. As for greatness? Time will tell…

Stan | 9/15/2008, 6:27 am EST

Reckon those slating the album as disjointed should go and buy some Nicklefeckingback albums, more up your street. Metallica needed an album to compete with the recent MH release and haven’t done a bad job. There are some classic sounds and a few that follow the St Anger theme although produced better but then I love St Anger so i’m biased. Love the disjointed myself…we call it off beat but then again as a Dillenger fan this is what I look for

Jay Mift | 9/15/2008, 7:32 am EST

This is one of their best albums by far, i mean what have they been doing holding it back for over 17 years since black album just to thrash out again?

METALRULE | 9/15/2008, 10:02 am EST

Damn I have just listened to the album for the second time through… it is all TRASH – there is no reason for these ’songs’ to even exist. Just riff after riff pasted together, almost a caricature of the real Metallica.

village of Saighton (exists!) | 9/15/2008, 11:40 am EST

drew | 9/14/2008, 12:28 am EST

“You people aren’t on Metallica’s side anymore and no one cares what you think.”

- Metallica haven’t been on OUR side for a LONG time (e.g. “oh my ART, my ART” – Lars. Add an ‘F’ to the start of those two words, more like…).

Selling crap music when they can live without doing it might be part of the reason why…

I’ll ‘be on Metallica’s side’ as and when they deserve it. ‘Til then, there’s plenty of others who need the support a lot more, you must admit!

I’ve been alive since before Kill Em All, but didn’t listen to Metallica properly until the mid-90’s. So I’m not stuck in the 80s, if the music sucks, it sucks. This album doesn’t suck, but it’s far from a necessary release as the exact same style has been done before better by the same band. They should have retired as a band long ago (and done different things) instead of poisoning their legacy, and supporting them only perpetuates this bad state of affairs.

I love their best tracks like my own brother, but justice is not best served by falsehood.

Wasn’t Metallica once about justice and truth (in their lyrics at least)?

“If Metallica cloned an album of Justice or Puppets and put it out today, you would call them unoriginal.”

- Well, YEAH,I would (duhh), because it would be the fucking truth, if you look up the definition of ‘Original’…

its great..best album since justice, and in my true opinion only followed by st. anger since justice… its well thought out in every aspect and more than most people anticipated… the metal hath returned

Brad | 9/15/2008, 1:46 pm EST

Death Magnetic is fuckin awesome…best Metallica album in 20 years!! Fuck all you haters…is this their best album ever? Maybe not. But it definitely emphasizes what Metallica is all about, much more so than their last 3 albums have – and that’s pure heavy, fast metal. Couldn’t have asked for more! Best metal band out there!! So for all you fucks who think it’s cool to hate Metallica – get over the past and eat shit!

Redback | 9/15/2008, 3:47 pm EST

How can anyone compare this to ‘And justice for all’? There best and last decent album in my opinion. Its as if Metallica sat down in the recording studio, jammed for a few hours and then stitched the whole sorry mess together and said ‘yep, that’ll do…’ An uninspired, badly produced plethora of injustice for all!

Me | 9/15/2008, 6:39 pm EST

as usual the fanboys will lap this up (like they did with St Anger at the time although most of them will not admit to it) while anyone seriously into metal will ask himself what the hype was all about.

This album is seriously tedious and lacklustre. Let’s rehash some old Metallica riffs, make long songs that consist mainly of repetitive, tedious riffs that are totally unrelated and people will be fooled again into buying another shitfest. The production is terrible, with the main culprit being Lars, who seems to have discarded most of his drums apart from the snare and bassdrums and put them WAY high in front of the mix. If he had practiced as much as he talked bullshit, he would have been half a decent drummer, alas…instead we get this boom-takka-boom rubbish. You’d think that Kirk would have tossed his wah out of the window after all the criticism he received, but guess what: it’s back with a vengeance…ALL THE FUCKING TIME. And what about the production? Gone is the thump of yore (even though the Black album was a major letdown to most people, at least the production was HUGE).
No, they have totally lost it. Where other oldies like Exodus, Testament, King Diamond and even Maiden have managed to recapture their magic and release great sounding and relevant albums, Metallica have become a poor coverband of a once great metal phenomenon. Sad thing is, like St. Anger (does anyone openly admit they have it anymore?), the new one will most likely sell millions of copies again.

DaZuck | 9/15/2008, 7:29 pm EST

While this album isn’t near as great as the first four, it is at least as good as the second set of albums before St. Anger. While the second group of albums was nothing like the first, they still had some great songs. Bands change, styles, influences, and direction. They veered away from the hard and fast, took a more popular style for awhile, and with St. Anger tried for cutting edge maybe.
Death Magnetic is a step in the right direction, kind of like a reunion, with themselves, with the fans, and with the past. This album seems like a bridge between the first four albums, over all the others since, like an alternate reality or the restart of a franchise which has become so popular.
However this album is seen, I think it is a good start/ restart for Metallica. This album may not be quite what was expected but it is nice to hear them bring the Heavy, Speed back to their music. I look forward to what comes next, hopefully with the pressure to counter St. Anger gone they will once again bring perfection to us fans.

Van-Stolk | 9/15/2008, 11:09 pm EST

Metallica hmmm,

I think the album is ok but not quite what I was expecting.
I think the guitar sound is thin (not enough balls) however I believe Rick Rubin is to blame for that being the producer and all. And I think Lars needs to tighten up his snare.
I believe Metallica can do better; maybe they need to get Dave Mustaine back after all his riff writing is second to none and his lyrics stand for something.

garage days | 9/16/2008, 4:30 am EST

Where have you guys gone?? atleast you are trying to bring back some heavy riffs, but lets face it you guys have gone soft and just cant cut it anymore.im a die hard metallica fan and always have been, you guys need to get of the studio go back to the garage and remember where you came from, only then we might get that raw sound we all been longing for like seek and destroy and master of puppets, get some eye of the tiger back, and us die hard fans might get you guys back.

Chris | 9/16/2008, 6:28 am EST

Utter shite. I hate the fact people are likening this to their earlier efforts which displayed some actual thought behind arrangements and at least some kind of consistent melody. This sounds like they’ve taken a hundred riffs and slapped them together with their eye’s closed in protools. The sound is nasty (you’d have thought they’d learn after St Anger, the only album that is worse than this).

Maybe I’m being over-critical but this band are so overrated. They did some wicked stuff in the 80’s and I actually enjoyed Black and Load but this has none of the song-writing flare of either.

Fuck modern metal | 9/16/2008, 9:36 am EST

I for one like the album have been a Metallica fan since about 1986 and seen them many times. Best band I have ever seen without a doubt. Nevermore are a class, will never come close to Metallica. For all you people who are saying it are a shite album, if half of you were told you could get the credits for righting st anger and the royalties that came with it, you would cut peoples arms of for it. Fact is people are saying Kirk is shit, James lyrics are shite what have you reordered, I am sure if we seen your music collection, we would find loads of motley crew, G&R. It’s this simple, how many bands will last the same length of time as Metallica, how many bands have had their time and died and now make come backs because the ,metal scene sucks. Metal sucks these days, it’s all about who has the most tattoos or piercings.

Erick | 9/16/2008, 5:53 pm EST

Rick Rubin was not what Metallica needed for this album. Its an awesome album to start with and a good producer could have reached down and got more out of album and the band. I’m not a musical expert but I think I can even see that. Suicide & Redemption is actually my favorite. Thank God we still have good metal bands trying to stay alive in this shit market of music being produced.

Chris | 9/16/2008, 6:15 pm EST

No cut the crap all you guys critizing the album! It`s on a par with Justice and those who deny it are just a bunch of guys reminiscing the days when they were kids themselves! If you guys can do better, why don`t you just record Justice II and make a shitload of money out of selling it to your likes? Broken Beat and Scarred has riffing of the same quality that for instance The Shortest Straw has and who is calling Death Magnetic soft? Guys, get a soundsystem and listen to it…Metallica rules and if you don`t like it (one reason less to cry and bitch about-it`s sooooo much fun, damn it!) stop being a fan. The true fans will happily receive this album…

Finally | 9/16/2008, 10:05 pm EST

I am sooooooooooo proud of these guys – after all they are nearing 50 – and still are capable of doing it better then anyone in the Biz. Thank you, thank you, thank you…..Thanks rick rubin for pulling this out of them…..i knew they had it in them

shish sheik | 9/16/2008, 11:44 pm EST

i am a fucking metal guy …and i fuckin like metallica like no other fuckin band in this fuckin world …and i am fuckin crazy metal guy u fuckers out there

Eye of the tiger? | 9/17/2008, 12:35 am EST

Cmon man how can you call yourself a metal fan when telling metallica they need some eye of the tiger, these guys ARE metal and they made one kick ass album! Sure they tried something different for st. anger. Was it bad? No, just not quite metallica. But no one can be in the game this long and not change some. Give up old timers, its never gonna sound exactly like the 80’s metallica. Just be glad they give us some real metal.

They Will Rise (BAND) | 9/17/2008, 4:37 am EST

This is an awesome piece of material bringing metallica back to their very best. I dont know what people expect from the world’s biggest selling Heavy Metal Band but sdurely this is it!? Truly awesome!

gogec1kg | 9/17/2008, 9:48 am EST

This is serious album. They playing again like devils. No commercial failure, Metallica is no.1 on both sides of big water. Let’s face it: They still rocks, like it or not!

classicrockrules | 9/17/2008, 9:58 am EST

I wish people would stop harking back to the Metallica of the 80’s. All of Metallica’s best albums are from the black album onwards, including Death Magnetic which is absolutely brilliant and I’m really glad they haven’t abandoned the black album, load and reload sounds. I think there’s something for all Metallica fans on Death Magnetic, a real hybrid of their 80’s and 90’s sounds. For all you thrash metalheads, just stop moaning about the fact that they don’t sound as they did in the 80’s and appreciate the brilliance of everything they’ve done since 1991. If not then listen to Megadeth, Slayer or whatever other complete thash metal tosh exits today.

philthy | 9/17/2008, 10:59 am EST

best contribution by any band to metal since “…And Justice For All”. fuckin awesome. Rick Rubin deserves a lot of credit of the production of this album.

gogec1kg | 9/17/2008, 12:14 pm EST

Metallica still rocks, like it or not… DM is NOT commercial failure, it’s no.1 on both sides of big water. James and CO. again playing like devils without any calculations. Who cares about make up shit like productions this/that. Most important thing – they are honest players!

metal maddy | 9/17/2008, 9:58 pm EST

its obvious that metallica would change with time bringing sounds of there old albums into this death magnetic was great idea still if you actually listen to the album really listen you can see its not just the same to say it is is just uter stupidity Fact

sonicly | 9/17/2008, 11:40 pm EST

this album sounds like ass…its clipping all over…snare is distorted and way too loud…i thaught i had blown speakers…its just this horrible “mix”

Ja - Bedford, U.K. | 9/18/2008, 3:10 am EST

Death Magnetic – a mix of everything that is good within Metallica. These guys don’t need to prove anything to anyone they have the title of No.1 Metal Gods ever and it would take something very special to take that away. In this album the riffs are crisp, the lyrics are deep, the drums are back to where they should be (St.Anger bean tins have taken a dive)…just listen, enjoy, hit the lager and stop your moaning – if it wasn’t for these guys Metal would have died a long time ago.
This is a stark reminder to a lot of the so-called metal bands out there what this ‘genre’ (I hate that term)is all about – take notes and put your back catalogues in there with your Britney Spears, ditch your pretty boy images and play some music – Metal up your a**s…..Rant over!

classicrockrules | 9/18/2008, 5:35 am EST

When are all the thrash metalhead old timers going to realise that Metallica are NOT a thrash metal band but a brilliant rock ‘n’ roll band – end of. Stop listening to them if you don’t like them and stop your moaning. I’m sure they couldn’t give a stuff if you don’t like them anymore. Long live everything Metallica have done since 1991!!! They would never have become the massive super group they are now without the brilliant Bob Rock producing their magnificent 90’s albums.

RANJIT | 9/18/2008, 6:58 am EST

the wait is over, and thanks for putting up this album at the ri8 time , as Rap and Hip hop was ruling for last few years and this album will again put metal on top

Anonymous | 9/18/2008, 1:05 pm EST

I just wish poeple would remember that this is place where you write comments on how you like this album. Not a fkin debate to determine if metallica are better than other bands or if my grand ma still has black hair. If you’re so full of metallica , go kiss their asses live. If you hate them , stop crying about it lol.

Now for my opinion on this album.
This is obviously more metal than anything they have done in the past 18 years. I like it. The riffs are good and fierce. Tho i still dislike the snare drum. Its still very metal can sounding lol. And way high in the volume mix. I wouldve liked some reverb on the vocals , sounds like load/reload and i dont like that. The lyrics are very nice tho. The guitar solos mostly suck , but hey , at least there are some. And there is one thing annoying me in the single note riffs , sounds like they are riffing with the wah , you get this twangy sound kinda. tuff to explain lol. no big deal.
All in all i think this is a very good album and even if there are many things that i dont like , the overall vibe is good , furious , and full of metal. Tiz good stuff.

Shrug | 9/18/2008, 1:26 pm EST

Its a good album. But i have problems with all the tones in it.In fact the only tone i like is chord tones. Single notes sounds like they were played on a telecaster or something , or if you were riffing with a wah turned on.The guitar solo tone is again full of wah so it just sounds like random noise. The vocals i also dont like , sounds like load/reload , there’s almost no reverb on them. These vocals end up sounding crystal clear instead of grandiose and powerfull.Tho once i can get passed all these i find a very heavy and fast metal album that is way better than st-anger in terms of sound , and better than anything they’ve done in the past 18 years as far as metal is concerned.

metallica mmkay | 9/18/2008, 11:07 pm EST

Hey, this is a lot better than st anger or anything after justice for that matter. They’ve actually stepped back in their own footsteps which is hard to do, and I expected it least from metallica especially after the “lets bang pots and pans and sing out of key” that was shit-I mean st. Anger. Way to go u old fucks!

ridzirocks | 9/18/2008, 11:26 pm EST

Death Magnetic is a great comeback album. There are to many idiots here who would like to think themselves as “experts”. I’d like to think those people as “snobs” more like it. These are the people who can’t even play a bloody note on the guitar, let alone give comments on guitar tone. I think James’s guitar tone is spot on. Sure, it’s different, but a tone with plenty of mids is most welcome in my church of thought.

To me this sounds like Metallica are finally enjoying what they are doing again, sounds really honest.

For a 32 year old like me, who has been listening to Metallica since the beginning, I grew up – Just like Metallica has. :)

Sandman | 9/19/2008, 12:50 am EST

Much better than I expected, solid effort from Metallica. They really knew what they were doing this time. Very catchy, energetic and very fast and heavy though u can feel the passion within. {{4/5}}

THE BAD
- Over-amplified snare which gets annoying. some songs have tin-can sound which i cant stand.
- Hetfield sometimes is drowned by others (only at times)
- Some songs r bit haywire and sound messy, but had potential(My Apocalypse

THE GOOD
- Guitar riffs/solos are kickass!
- Fast speed, full of surprises.
- Not too repetitive, each song sounds different.
- ‘Unforgiven III’ is very creative and epic, ‘Suicide & Redemption’ is a top class instrumental. Although 10 mins, amazing guitar start –> finish.
- Hetfield sounds perfect, real good power and good balance. He sounds like he’s really enjoying himself!
- Some soft bits are there, well balanced and clever build ups.
- Overall, impressive improvement from the mess st anger!

I really enjoyed this album: 4/5
METALLICA ARE BACK! :P

Hey all… if you haven’t heard, those complaing about the sound being distorted/amp’d up/clipped…. it’s because it is for some weird reason. The version in the guitar video game has been confirmed as the correct mix. The CD was altered from the final mix before release. Just waiting to see what Metallica does about this. The tracks in game sound sooooo much better than the CD.

Cliff Jr. | 9/19/2008, 2:28 pm EST

I have been a metallica fan since ‘90. The Black album was good but not as good as the first three. I’ve stuck with them through Load, Reload, Garage Inc, S&M, the catastrophe that was ST. Anger and all the while waiting for them to get back to their roots to make music that was true to themselves. Through all these albums I have definetly shared my thoughts on how bland and in some cases how damn crappy some of their work has been since load. I’ve always wanted them to show the same passion that they did back in the day with songs like “Battery”, “Orion”, and “Ride the Lightning”. Well, let me tell you something my friends…..The four horsemen are back!! I’ve listened to this album all the way through about six times and I freakin love it! Yeah, it’s got hints of all their albums, but for the first time since “Justice” it feels like Metallica again…..not “Tallica”. Personally, this is the best album they have released since “Justice”. I am very proud of these guys! It’s about damn time!

Peter K | 9/19/2008, 4:29 pm EST

It’s a great album.

If you want to genre-ise Death Magentic you will be disappointed as it’s not much of a tghrash album. It’s miles above that garbage. The fact is Metallica is Metallica and not a thrash band. There’s nowhere else you can go for Metallica music. That’s why they are more successful than any shitty “thrash band” and the metal midget fans of said genre who can’t appreciate anything beyond thrash.

They sold me and I have always thought they were merely okay. What’s great about this is that all their experimentation over the years has given them a broad pallet of sound and this is the result.

The mastering sucks and I would like to hear more bottom/bass. It’s still an exceptional “rock” album and will bring them knew fans.

Metallica hater! | 9/19/2008, 11:55 pm EST

I don’t care what they did this time…It sounds like a sorry excuse of hoping to go back to their old days…James still can’t sing even though he tries hard..especially the softer tunes where he thinks he can use his vocals…YUCK. and where is the innovation?…the guitars sound like a bunch of messy riffs..like they went punk while trying to be old school new school… 2008 they are not new age and need to stay away from it. I think these guys need to retire there sorry lame excuse to come back never can pull it off lousy musicians…with fans who are blinded by there name and not the actual music. I never really liked these guys and probably never will….and I like almost anything. I’d rather listen to ashley simpson than these lame butts! Please Metallica go away and never come back!!!

electric gypsy | 9/21/2008, 12:23 pm EST

metallica were just plain dudes who wanted t be rock stars…for god’s sake man..they used to like diamond head,so go figure.but in all honesty, pantera, slayer, megadet h,sepultura et all never really put metal on the map.metallica made metal/trash whateva u call it the in music..and though they;re older, maybe a lil’ slower and stuff..they’re the pioneers of the genre..but then again in saying that, they never actually stuck to one genre.i feel that metallica put metal music on the map,and though other bands did the same..they were the original deal..ask lemmy for !@#$%’s sake.metal gods..maybe not..good f’in rock and rool band..goddamn right bout that.for me..metallica were the real deal..thought black album was kinda slow..load/re-load shoulda been put out 10 yrs from when it originally came out and st anger was a decent effort considering they wanted to kill each other..just felt that kirk held the glue,,though i feel he’s never been given credit for it…its hetfield and ulrich who always had tiffs..not hammett..never heard lars/hetfied say kirk was a total !@$$#@@ egoistical sob.but then again..bob rock kinda killed it for me..and rick rubin was a good change..but the thing is..i’ve yet to hear the new stuff..coz i live in a f’in country where albums arrive weeks(sometimes even months) after they’re released in the states…but im game for it..coz there’s solo’s..which i felt was the low point of st anger..think bout it..if some other lame ass band had released load/re-load/st anger…ppl woulda saidhey..no bad at all..but then again..they (lars/jamez/kirk) were goin through some hard times..and growing up/maturing in life..so can anyone tell me honestly that the music was bullshit?..maybe it wasnt what you’d expect of metallica..but who are we to judge them..if you dont like it..dont f’in buy it..to me.metallica are legends..always will be and i’ll get their albums not because of the “name’..but bcoz i f’in respect and grew up listenin to them..but to end it all..everyone has a right to their own opinion..and this is my honest opinion of them..look at slayer man..not to diss them..where are they now..and isnt it the same old satanic stuff they out out..(for the record i love slayer too man)..so at least you gotta give em’ credit for tryin to re-invent themselves once again…peace-out!!

Visprad | 9/21/2008, 5:15 pm EST

First time i heard it too fast, but it didnt make any sense to me, but in the second time, i found myself naked and head banging in front of the speakers, even i cried as i heard them getting back to Metallica again! But I think Hetfield is one of the great melody singers of all time but he didn’t fully use his strength in this album , but at last, i really enjoyed this Death Magnetic !

From 81 | 9/22/2008, 6:41 pm EST

Having spent the last 30 mins reading all your shit, I, THE Metallica fan, will tell you exactly how good or bad DM is.

Firstly, For those of you going on about wah wah’s and snares..FO back to school saddo’s. Take the disk into Biology and disect it.

First listen, I was thining, same old stuff again, few tweaks to make it sound different, but expecting it to end up on the Metallica pile, only getting played evry few months or so. After 3 laps though… wow, this is one serious piece of music. I cannot name 1 song that i would class as a ’skipper’ on the ipod.

The rumbling rythyms are immense and whilst the vocals sound a bit rough, this is good, i prefer this to the over produced shite from lesser bands that could never come close to there studio stuff on stage.

The melody in ‘All Nightmare long’ is amazing, can’t listen to it without jumping around, eyes closed, waiting for them to visit my town next.

Early days but at the moment i would rank this disc at no.4.

1. MOP
2. AJFA
3. RTL
4. DM
5. Metallica
6. KEA
7. Load
8. StA
9. RL

I doubt they will ever write anything to break the top3, but it would be an amazing album if they did..here’s hoping for them to carry on from DM and create THE album.

p.s. Did someone above really say bring Mustaine back? I LIKE Megadeth to a limit, have all there stuff, but they have been and always will be in Metallicas huge shadow.

Thirtysomething.. | 9/23/2008, 12:50 pm EST

Bought the CD yesterday and have had it on repeat ever since!

I found most o their post Black album material tepid (though I quite enjoyed St Anger, peversely)to be honest.

This seems like an updated sequel to ‘AJFA’ however – my fave and first ‘tallica LP… so I’m very happy!

Tonnes of energy and attitude combined w razor riffing; what old school fans would expect but has been missing for a long while up till now.

Awesome return to form
You gotta hear this!!

knob | 9/23/2008, 6:42 pm EST

Ok…I am a huge Metallica fan like most of you on here, so this is a bitter sweet review for me.

Too much splicing of old riffs from their first four albulms and trying to piece them with other riffs from those albulms to make new songs. We all want the old stuff and are never gonna get it again. Yes, I understand artists need to reinvent themselves and stuff, but you know what we all want….deliver. And if you just can’t reach that caliber anymore, then bow out gracefully. Maybe its because they are successful and have no reason to be angry or have that drive anymore…?

Granted they are far more talented than I will ever be in the music scene, but I just felt disappointed. Maybe I am expecting Ride The Lightning part 2, but I am kinda tired of hearing Unforgiven type music from them.

All in all it is far better than load and reload, but doesn’t make you want to hit someone with a brick like disposable heros or trapped under ice….at least thats just me.

Rattlehead | 9/23/2008, 8:37 pm EST

This album is another in a long line of embarrassments spewed from the asshole of Metallica. Im not a “hater” of Metallica they were the first band I ever listened to and up until load was released they where the kings of metal. So in my honest opinion if your an absolute metal head like I am skip this album and go buy Five Finger Death Punch “The Way Of The Fist” Album to get your headbanger fix.

Metallica >>> everyone else | 9/24/2008, 4:42 am EST

This album kicks ass.
All the people saying “I was a Metallica fan, but now they suck” can go fuck off. You’ve got it stuck in your head that they will never be as good as they were in “the good old days”…but actually give DM a chance and you’ll realize how freakin good it is. I give it a 9 out of 10, seriously.

Dave Koven | 9/24/2008, 11:12 am EST

39 now, been a fan since the beginning as a 13-year old long-haired junior high stoner, now Husband, Degrees, Dad, Executive Job, and they still kick my ass! I am sorry, but some of these idiot reviewers are NOT true Metallica fans for trashing this, as they are back, and back in a big way. Any TRUE Metallica fan is into this, and in a big way.

thrashhead | 9/26/2008, 10:34 pm EST

The first time i listened to that album, it didn’t make any sense to me!…i just loved the last song but that’s about it!…but then i pressed play again just to see what would happen and suddenly most of the songs took on another dimension …however, you can see that they’re getting old…the pace is slowed down and well…how to put it …unforgiven III just makes me sick…it’s not soooo bad but do they really need to sound like another indi rockband in the line of nickelback?! we already have quite enough of them IMHO! …overall…my opinion of that album is rather positive, and being a musician i know it’s not so easy to renew oneself after 10 albums …but.thrash is in no way fast paced alternative and now i’m sure metallica is past its heydays ….though i’d definitely like they prove me wrong and come up with a new one packed with songs in the vein of my apocalypse!\m/

This Is Necessary | 9/26/2008, 11:31 pm EST

This album…this album is the pinnacle of mediocrity, and the perfect capstone to end Metallica’s “career.” As much as people bitch about Load and Reload, Death Magnetic is, essentially, a less-inspired mixture of both albums complete with a sometimes-heavier fuzz sound and riffs blatantly stolen (er…”borrowed”) from old-school Slayer (among other bands). There are a few good solos and rhythms, but they aren’t connected in any fashion that makes this album interesting. Ulrich still treats the drums like someone with palsy banging cooking pots together, and Hetfield’s singing is, well…just as bad as it is live. Yelling apoc-O-lypse repeatedly is irritating as hell, considering someone along the line knew how to spell apocalypse but, apparently, never clued Hetfield in on how to pronounce it. Throwing in tempo changes randomly is great, but they are borderline meaningless, boring, and quite aggravating when they destroy a part of a song that has great potential to just plain rock. This album is what Rush would sound like if they cranked up the overdrive and grew some testicles. Technical, great. Inspiring? Not really.

It was a great attempt for them to revise their image from being money-hungry attention-whore pretty boys, but when it comes down to it, Death Magnetic is an album featuring two guys with Super Cuts hairdos who only really released great music when they were drug addicts and alcoholics.

Sorry, guys, this is your last album and you damn well know it. Five years to release 10 songs from “20 or 30″ they had written? End of the line. Exit right. Have a nice day.

TRASH n roller | 9/27/2008, 11:58 am EST

this album kinda cool but lars still sucks but there will never be in album like master of pupets or justis for all by lisning to this album ifeel that there is somehting messing but hell its better then load reload and st anger you can say there back but dont forgat they are old now

jaymz | 9/28/2008, 7:33 am EST

DM is one of my favorite albums of Metallica. A fusion of their old ones and Load-Reload albums. I don’t know why some of these dumb fuck people and call themselves as fans that insist on what Metallica should sound or how they should make their music. As if they own Metallica and they are the only fans in the world.

I like all their albums! Definitely I have my own favorites but it doesn’t mean that those that are not my favorites are doomed to be burned or something. I respect all their works because of the dedication they put in them. It’s hard to make great songs, man.

“Cyanide” and “That Was Just Your Life” are my top picks for this album. All the songs are great!!!

Long Live Metallica!!! Continue making great songs for all your fans all over the world!!!

vinodh | 9/28/2008, 9:33 am EST

absolute cracker jack of an album..for all true metallican fans this wud be an oasis in the middle of a desert..in a world of so called “thrash” metal bands that just strum the distortion guitar without trying to make sense & self induced misery of metallica by moving into load, reload & the worst of all St anger this is refreshing & a throw back to those days when metal was jus METAL.

Kord Chandler | 9/28/2008, 10:35 pm EST

When I first heard this album, I had mixed feelings. They did bring back the palm muting, thrash style of old, but it still felt like a product of the music industry and not the band Metallica. I’m on my third listen, and there is a lot of things about the album I like, but putting that aside, I get bored with them over complicating phrases in the songs. Don’t get me wrong, I love rock epics, but it seems like a lot of these songs are merely ‘half’ epics; trying too hard to be epics. I agree with a lot of people, it’s probably their most “metal” record since 1987, but that doesn’t mean the song writing is the best they have done. The song writing is better than St. Anger, but at least Load & ReLoad had good movement in the songs. Some of these songs just seem like overkill. The first three albums had me on the edge of my seat. This record had me on the edge of my seat for only certain parts of the songs. As for production, I’m really surprised that Rick Rubin let so many engineering flaws slide. He is probably one of the best producers alive, and he let simple things like over-compression, little to no bass presence, and over killing the drums as far as volume level. I think as a Metallica fan and a sound engineer I may be over analyzing this record, but from my point of view, while being better than the last piece of crap they put out (St. Anger) this is still far from being a great Metallica record. It maybe a good Metallica record, but it’s not a great Metallica record. Trying too hard to make a record that is all epics, and rushed production is the downfall of this album. Bringing back the classic Metallica riffery and soloing was it’s upbringing. It’s a good record, just not their full potential.

Boubou of Thulium | 10/5/2008, 8:04 am EST

When I got the album, the first song I listened was “my apolcalypse”; being the first single, I expected much. During the first 30 sec, I thought the riff was alright; then Lars goes into these St Anger style stupid beats and I thought “Fuck no guys! Don’t do that again!”. Then, worse, James started to sing and that was it; I thought “ok guys, it’s over!”. After listening the whole thing, I confirm. It’s over.

It’s full of pointless repetitive riffs to make some “metallica branded” 6-7 minutes songs (10 for Suicide and redemption; one of the worst instrumental I’ve ever heard. Useless song! We’re far away from Orion or the call of Ktulu there!). Through the whole album, James kept that “St Anger style singing”. Kirk solos are terrible (it almost sounds like he hits the wrong keys sometimes).I mean, they wanted to do heavy; they are heavy for sure…and so? What’s the point if it’s not even good. I’m not gonna say that it’s great because drums are loud and they push the distortion a level higher! But you know what, I love “the day that never comes” (at least before it turns into a pile of shit in the end) and I think that “the unforgiven 3″ and “All nightmare long” (the guitar palm-mute strumming in slipknot style is sweet! Chorus is great, verses aren’t) are decent songs, so for this effort, I give a 4.5/10 to this album.

I can’t blame engineers and labels to put money in this; Metallica, it’s like a BMW or a Rolex, it’s a high class brand; no matter what they do, it will always sell. Even my band is better than that! But for those who thinks this album is amazing or whatever, please have a listen to the roadrunner or century media bands; you’ll find that there is way better out there, bands that deserve more attention than this!

Don’t get me wrong; I still worship Metallica. They’re the greatest, but after if they wanna remain the ultimate metalgods that they are, I also think it’s time to put an end to that discography before they completey harm and ruin their own legacy.

God awful mix, no I mean really….fuck … but nice to see them doing their thing again, not in the same way but, hell who can keep it up 20 years later?, I still have respect for them but will not be buying this album…

Well some of the bad reviews here, from my POV is people hoping for Metallica to return to their Black album roots.
As someone who started listening to Metallica firstly by their Black album and back, I did wondered why ‘Metallica’? Why the slow melodic tunes? But came to love their music anyways.
But after listening to those earlier albums that hooked me and made me respect and worship them as Metal leaders in the music scene. Truly their earlier albums were more towards metal and I mean hard metal.
True, the black album was their greatest effort in bringing metal to everyone (my fav too), but true metal fans know that their great work was in their previous albums, Kill em all, Ride the lightning and Master of puppets comes to mind.
Which now brings us to Death Magnetic, although classics are classics and no way you’re gonna beat that this still comes out seconds to their great earlier albums and it is way better then the lost of direction St Anger is.
Some said that DM is messy and jumble up riffs, to me the blend was just perfect and true to Metal rock. And in a time where pop in rock and R&B rules, I think this is a fresh breath of air long since the 80’s and early 90’s
And now we (at least I realise) that metal still lives on. Great album from Metallica! There is though, room for greatness yet, so I will be waiting for their next while enjoying this Loud and long awaited and inspiring album.
Great job Metallica!

DudeMagnaDick | 10/11/2008, 11:29 am EST

I posted a comment 4 weeks back after a couple of listens to this new album. I thought the album was great & said so. But i was kinda surprised when i read some of the other reviews; people trying so hard to compare the new one to the previous albums & all that complaining that it dint measure up. So i thought i’d try out an experiment. Not to prove anything to any one; just to see if all that -ve comparison was justified. So i wiped my pod clean, & loaded it with Metallica’s entire catalogue.& man! it’s been that way for over 2 weeks now. Try this with any other metal band. I defy you.You will realise that NOT sounding monotonous (or one dimensional if you like), but still retaining the steel spirit of heavy/speed metal in most of their creations is proabably their greatest achievement. And to do it consistently for 2 decades in a pathbreaking kind of way is why Metallica are Metallica. I feel bad for the fellas post long comments trying so hard to put this album down.they are missing the point completely. DM’s songs will undoubtedly be counted among Metallica’s strongest & best few years down the line.

This album brought me to tears. Why? I was introduced to the world of metal with Metallica, I stayed because of them and then ultimately I left because of them in anger (hint). Now I am no longer a metal fan. So, when one of my friend told me he took a listen to the new Metallica album, I wondered for a second should I at least check out the reviews for old times sake? To my shock and surprise reviews were good. I picked up the album and what do I find? Yes, Metallica has revived their good old form to the best of their abilities. If you are a metal fan, please let’s not complain and miss out on the opportunity to enjoy the greatest comeback by the greatest metal band of all time. To me now, it does not matter if Metallica makes another album of this ilk, I can live happily ever after knowing that the talent they had never went away, it was just dormant for little more than a decade. Two of my instant favourites from the album are “Broken, Beat And Scarred” and “Cyanide”. I agree with some of you that overall the production quality is below par by today’s standards. But the music is not something todays brainless rockers can even dream of creating. Thank you Metallica!

Have you ever seen a Woody Allen Movie? Have You Ever Listen a Zappa’s Opera?Have you ever Seen a Guttuso’s Picture or something else
Not ‘em all are a masterpiece, well, go on ,artists, sometimes, maybe needs a pause to assimilate, to grow up, to understand what life gives them… so…

I know Metallica’life; I surely Know Who Metallica Are
I was born with it, James could be my brother , and I could say that THIS Death Magnetic is Just another Passage, Men grows up, why we are in search of another “kill em all”, the river flows, my life is changed, Death magnetic is another album with picture of life… Maybe i’m another man, another way of thinking, but the roots remain the same… ODE TO METALLICA and
Good Work Guys!

i listen to this album everyday twice at least… something is still wrong, its as if they turned into metallideth or metalltura, or even metallimaiden…this is not metallica any more… i dont hate Rob.. i just wish they kept Jason, he was the best to play after Cliff.

joe | 10/30/2008, 10:58 am EST

Not bad. Nice to see guitar intros and solos again. Singing is bad, even for hetfield. Drumming gets annoying, reminds me of st. anger at times. A little to harsh, and not as hard and melodic for good metallica. Timing changes reminds me of sepultura- good thing. However, best thing i’ve heard in 18 years from em. Worth a purchase.

I’ve been a Metallica fan from the beginning, and loved every thing they’ve done up to and including “justice”. The “Black” album was a commercial success and was produced well but lacked the anger. The rest have been CRAP…. St. anger would have been an amazing album if Lars didn’t sound like he was beating on pots and pans in a tunnel..wtf..turn up the bass on the drums a bit. You can still hear this on DM where’s the booming double bass!?
This album is a mix of Justice and the black album. justice= 8/10 black = 6/10 combine them and you get Death Magnetic……7/10…
Take this with a grain of salt as I am comparing Metallica today with Metallica of the 80’s/90’s. if you compare this with the other crap metal bands out there its a 10/10.

As teenagers in the 80’s we were angry…20 years later were not so angry…and neither is Metallica.

I miss cliff as I believe he was a driving force in there thrash style
I also miss Jason, but I’m sure I’ll grow to like there new bassist in time just as I grew to like Jason.

Peace.

Actually thought this album was kinda bad ass. Sweet riffs, you just gotta listen to it as a seperat entity

death head | 12/16/2008, 10:11 am EST

the album kicks ass. plain and simple the best album in the last 20 years. I wanna see metallica and slayer on a metal fucking tour.

Metallicafan88 | 1/2/2009, 6:42 am EST

I think it’s pointless to compare this one to previous albums. Metallica simply did this cd their way, and in their style. Just like they did with all their other albums. There are way to many conceited fans that wont quit judging their cd’s, People just need to sit down and listen to the music and draw real opinions. Not just everyone elses half-witted ones.

lyric | 1/2/2009, 6:56 pm EST

music has been and always will be about the journey you, and who-ever is there with you, are on..this is a fuckin sublime chapter into the story of Metallica..

Anonymous | 1/16/2009, 4:22 pm EST

I liked the Black album and the ones before that and I can honestly say that this is as good as those fellas. I especially like “My Apocalypse”, “The judas kiss”, “All nightmare long” and “That was just your life”.

People who keep talkin bout the good old days should now go and watch Penn and Teller: Bullshit.
There’s an episode about “the good old days” on the show, and they declared that “the good old days” are bullshit.

2008 was a great year in metal.

nozini | 1/16/2009, 9:39 pm EST

this record rips. end of story.

RB | 1/18/2009, 11:13 pm EST

insane album… don’t know what else to say.. alternate title could have been “justice revisited, the $9.98 ep”.. only regret, not going to the concert when they came to vancouver..

I'm Rick James Bitch | 1/30/2009, 1:06 am EST

You people need to realize that this album can only be judged for what it is musically and stop comparing it to the old ones. Sure, the style has a lot of influence from some of their older stuff but it needs to be judged by itself. I’ve been a fan since the beginning, have an original KEA with Dave M’s picture in it and not the re-release with Kirk’s, seen them 7 times so far, and still like the new album.
Stop crying and waiting for them to do whatever old album part 2. It will never happen. As you get older your tastes change and so did theirs. It is them going musically where they want to go and not giving a shit about what people say.
In the end it is all about the music. Everyone has an opinion. Let the people say what they want. It doesn’t matter what they say as long as you like the music you like.

indro | 2/16/2009, 3:15 am EST

…… DM is by far the best effort by Metalica since the Black Album (discounting S&M)… surely the greatest albums go:

MOP
RTL
AJFA
BA
DM
KEA
RLD
GI
ST.A

LD

but seriously at least when metallica were trying to become heavier and more like a traditional metal band then metallica they hammerd out st. anger and not another load. at least st anger has guts granted it is not another MOP or RTL but its beter than load… it is the largest sell out album of all time… Upon my 1st hearing of DM i thought it was alrite but no where near the standards of their previous stuff but now (after months and months of crankin the fuck outta it!) it is indefinately up there… and no band can ever reproduce the same fire they had 15-20 years ago but this is way more than what i hoped 4 and i thank metallica 4 being the greatest band that i have had the privelage 2 listen 2….. Aside from load.. that was shit….and maybe st anger…

Anonymous | 3/1/2009, 9:18 pm EST

I hve been a metallica actual fanatic since pretty much forever , been to tons of festivals and metallica concerts , my love to metallica survived St.Anger (some how :S) . anyway my personal opinion of death magnetic is that it is absolute rubbish ! it’s nice to hear guitar solos intros and outros but was kirk deaf when he played those solos ?? not a single decent solo , drumming ; sounds like a 3 year old kid playing not a professional who has been playing drums for over 25 years :S i mean for god’s sakes i’m a bassist and i could hve done some better drumming !! the bass i can’t even hear the bass is trujilo even playing ?. lyrics and vocals , wht can i say ? the lyrics should be burnt down or buried somewhere far far in the desert and for the vocals all i hear is hetfield trying to do his old “heheyayaaaa” which was never even working man tht’s just some bull . on a scale from 1 to 10 , this album is a 2 for me and am being very generous with tht

Bitus | 6/6/2009, 5:54 pm EST

I won’t compare it to the old albums.I won’t refer to the shit after Black Album like St.Anger.I will just say this:if metallica had a little respect to themselfs and their fans, they wouldn’t make such a shitty album. And i don’t think they needed the money…they turned into a another part-of-the-system rubbish band.i feel sorry for the metallica I once loved.they are gone.

Devon-age 13 | 6/14/2009, 11:37 pm EST

Yeah, its not as thrash metal as they’re 80’s stuff at all. But when you look back, they started the band when the were 18, 19 years old!they were rebels, and metal heads, i mean if you think about it, they wanted to name there first album “Metal Up Your A$$” but they werent aloud too. Metallica is near and dear to my heart but this was not my favorite album, but if you picture it this way, they have had 25 years together, well with at least 3 of the four origanall members. thats pretty darn good considering, most band dont have that many years with the same members. so yeah they eased up on this album. but you cant critise them. its still metal. if you think about it. i mean im rocking out one of my metallica shirts right now! but if you look at it in the way i do it is still a good album. so dont punish them. haha

Devon-13 year old girl

but i would kill Ulrich for wearing a scarf on That Metal Show. lol

xtreme metal hed | 7/11/2009, 11:55 am EST

This album is a fifty-fifty split of rubbish and hardcore classics. Like that was just your life, my apocalypse, suicide n redemption and all nightmare long all are fantastic! Nice heavy riffs and blistering solos. But then you look at Cyanide, the judas kiss, end of the line and day that never comes.. What the hell went wrong? cyanide didnt carry the excellent starting riff and went all limp-wristed half way through, judas kiss had the same problem, day that never comes didnt deliver when it decided to go heavy, much unlike the absolute LEGEND song , One. and end of the line was just completely wasted, end of story. AJFA’s style of pounding riffs didnt factor in, and MOP’s nice thrashy sounds only came through in my apocalypse, that was just your life, all nightmare long and suicide and redemption. So like i said, half this album is worth listening to, the other half belongs in its rightful place in the St. Anger album. But all the rest of Metallica, MOP, AJFA, RTL, and bits of BA are so good its untrue! ALL HAIL THE CLASSIC METALLICA!

HeadBanger94 | 7/19/2009, 3:27 am EST

Its was overall good, but as a drummer, Listening to it reminds me of when I first starting playing. The drum beats are so basic, and the lack of double bass take a little away from the album. And as for the solos, crappy! WAY to much wah, and bad solo tone. On the plus side, James singing sounds good, and some pretty cool riffs in it, but drums and Lead guitar need help. Lars, and Kirk should listen to all there old albums and relearn how to play Metallica style. Actually, they all should.

Anonymous | 8/9/2009, 3:03 am EST

well this album was alirght just for sake of listening to rock, as if ur trying to rember the good old heavy trash this album sucks balls its not heavy at all but hey you cant be best forever metallica will comeback with one more great album , i belive but thats just me

for now

R.I.P metallica
