Judge Says Arrest of “Chinese Democracy” Leaker Was Excessive

In his hearing this week, a judge questioned the necessity of arresting
Guns N’ Roses leaker Kevin Cogill, calling it unnecessary. The man who posted nine songs from the previously unheard sessions for the forever-in-production Chinese Democracy was shown some leniency by the court as the presiding judge felt the proposed $50,000 bail was excessive and noted that a court summons would have been sufficient. Instead, as Cogill’s girlfriend Shana told Rolling Stone, “They put him in handcuffs. They let me get him a shirt, and shoes without any laces before they took him away.” Cogill has a preliminary hearing scheduled for September 17, and if he’s found guilty of violating federal copyright law, he faces up to five years in prison.

The boy acted as a rock starand got f*ked. Well done. You should have respect for Axl because he might just go to your house and scream: “Welcome to jail motha foka!”
As for the girlfriend maybe she might considering go to an Ann Summers’.

Robama | 8/29/2008, 1:55 pm EST

I think police brutality is a shame. The poor guy just wanted to take part of the endless story that has been the making of Japonese Democracy.
How in the world can a boy walk without laces? That’s cruel.
My thoughts go to his poor girl friend.

Greg | 8/29/2008, 1:58 pm EST

Axl is a failed musician who now enjoys beating up on the little guy. Pathetic. The world would be a better place without him.

john | 8/29/2008, 2:06 pm EST

He deserved it. If you’re stupid enough to advertise that you have unreleased music from an artist and put it out for people to download…. well, punishing the stupid people of America is a good thing.

Robama | 8/29/2008, 2:10 pm EST

What about the girlfriend? Don’t you all think that she should receive any kind of support?
Poor girl!

Four Nick Eight | 8/29/2008, 2:31 pm EST

Greg is a moron. Again, Axl does not own the copyrights to his music, the record company does. He had nothing to do with it.

JESS | 8/29/2008, 2:45 pm EST

FOUR NICK EIGHT: Like you know what the hell your talking about. Read Axl’s contract since you seem to know so much. If the record company OWNED them, it would have released them a long time ago.

Rudy Pilfer | 8/29/2008, 2:48 pm EST

I have 2 songs from Chinese Diplomacy on my I-pod.

I am so screwed.

If I get arrested, I’m naming all of you as accessories….

D | 8/29/2008, 3:20 pm EST

Well, Greg, the music world has been without Axl Rose for over a decade and quite frankly rock music SUCKS. So I don’t think the world is better off.

That being said. I think any goofy douche trying to be E Famous by doing what this guy did should get the electric chair.

SATAN | 8/29/2008, 3:56 pm EST

Chinese Democracy should be released on the day Kevin gets out of jail. They better start promoting now, the album comes out in 5 years.

Steve | 8/29/2008, 4:06 pm EST

They should put Axl in jail for that photo alone.

Four NIck Eight | 8/29/2008, 4:34 pm EST

JESS: Very few artists own their own songs, with the notable and very rare exception of U2, who negotiated lower royalties years ago in exchange for complete ownership of their catalog. Ask the Beatles how that works, preferably AFTER you pull your head out of your ass. Axl had nothing to do with siccing federal dogs on this guy. It was the record company lawyers and researchers. The biggest target is usually the easiest.

The judge then ordered the arrest of Axl Rose, determining his crappy music is a crime against humanity

likroper.com | 8/29/2008, 4:41 pm EST

music and/or dvd piracy is a very serious issue, not to be taken lightly…

Eat at oe's | 8/29/2008, 4:44 pm EST

Juno loves boydong.

Dickweed | 8/29/2008, 7:36 pm EST

Is it just me or can you actually the trace of Axl’s bandana on his forehead?

guns n roses? axl n'cover band | 8/29/2008, 9:56 pm EST

why keep calling this band guns n roses? this is axl and like 10 new members.

Beta | 8/29/2008, 11:42 pm EST

He got what he had comming to him.

Now I have to get Mr. Axl his ice cream.

subservient experiment | 8/30/2008, 2:21 am EST

As a blogger this sounds like good news to me. I know a ton of my fellow bloggers were a little nervous about all the mp3’s we post on our sites. I think in general we are helping to create buzz for musicians rather than taking from their sales. I know I have discovered a ton of new music via blogs, and we bloggers typically strongly encourage our readers to purchase the music they like.

=w=

GnR Fan | 8/30/2008, 12:06 pm EST

Axl had nothing to do with the arrest. It was FBI who took the initiative. Also, stealing music is theft. If you were making money by selling what you legally owned and had rights to, and someone stole it and gave it away to others, you’d probably be pissed too. Judges are getting too liberal if you ask me. He should have been arrested. Getting arrested is not being sentanced to prison. A hefty fine, probation and community service is an appropriate punishment, since this guy is not a “danger” to the community.

clancy | 8/30/2008, 2:02 pm EST

the same liberal judges who give guys 6 years for murder 2 and blame society will give this poor bastard 5 years for upping some crap music.

Voice Of Reason | 8/30/2008, 4:44 pm EST

“Also, stealing music is theft.”

No it’s not, it’s called sharing. The idea that songs can be “owned” is totally insane. It’s capitalist propaganda, pure and simple.

SHARING IS CARING!

Joe | 8/30/2008, 5:06 pm EST

I am heading to Voice of Reason’s house to open his fridge and “share” his food. Also, I’m sure he won’t mind when I drive his VW bus and “share” his gas.

I heard Prince is much smarter than Axl in the studio, on stage, in business and in bed.

Dada | 8/30/2008, 5:12 pm EST

Axl’s skin color can best be described as penis pink.

boatman | 8/30/2008, 5:36 pm EST

Prince smart? He’s a religious idiot!

demodude | 8/30/2008, 5:58 pm EST

To Boatman; because someone has religion or spiritualty like Prince makes them an idiot? You are the type of RS reader that should probably switch your subscription to THE NATIONAL ENQUIRER. you should search for Brian May of Queen and his review of a Prince show he attended last year.

rockblock | 8/30/2008, 6:21 pm EST

Prince has single-handedly affected the deviation or, in many cases, total change of a mass populous’ ideas and beliefs of sexuality, racism, and religion, not to mention his lifelong dedication to freedom, independence, creativity and music, helping to define a place and system of lifestyle for a new generation of citizens based on cultural relevancy and love.

Trent Reznor | 8/30/2008, 11:41 pm EST

Axl’s just trying to protect what is important to him. Sure I don’t like the idea of him trying to get the kid put in jail for 5 years, besides he is probably a fan. Axl needs to get the album done already.

Ian | 8/31/2008, 10:50 am EST

Prince is pretty fucking awesome…

Axl Hose | 8/31/2008, 11:03 am EST

Too bad no one’s cared about GnR for about 15 years. Axl Rose should stick to doing voiceover work on video games. At least that way we’re laughing WITH him.

And yes, penis pink seems to be his skin color. You are what you eat! Nomnomnomnomnomnom.

Casual Observer | 8/31/2008, 6:30 pm EST

A lot of people seem to forget that Axl Rose has major mental issues that inhibit his ability to be a world-class showman a la Prince or Bono. This guy suffered physical and sexual abuse from the time he was small, and he really is an introverted recluse. Helping write the lyrics and music for what I think is the best debut album ever done might have contributed to the further disillusionment and warping of an already disturbed mind. From what I have heard of the demos, they sound pretty good. If, 20 years after Appetite, he comes out with something different and eclectic but still rockin’, then more power to him. I also love how those who say that no one has cared about Axl in 15 years take the time to say so. File sharing is ethically wrong. Obama/Biden in 08. McCain/Palin=Hitler/Goebbels.

Just Me And Nobody Else | 8/31/2008, 7:12 pm EST

All these opinions and sometimes strange reactions from fans and non-fans. Just wait until part 1 of Chinese Democracy comes out this year
and part 2 next year. Judge or have an opinion in 5 or 7 years. ‘Judge my Music not reports from other people in the press or on privat-sites. You all don’t know what has happened behind the scenes the last 13-14 years…….’

theflood | 8/31/2008, 9:41 pm EST

Axl who?

moe | 8/31/2008, 11:14 pm EST

I totally agree 110%. Axl’s skin tone does look penis pink. Whats with the Whoopee Goldberg braids moe?

gnr envy | 9/1/2008, 12:43 am EST

Axl, you had your moments, but now you are so yesterday…By the way, are those extensions? Are you still a homophobe who can’t hit the high notes live? Go retire to the state fair circuit like all good washed up metal stars. Perhaps the SC Beach Boardwalk Friday night summer concert series or Konocti Harbor?…You could open for Blue Oyster Cult or Eddie Money.

The Truth | 9/1/2008, 12:44 am EST

New GN’R is awesome, so is Old, but it’s time to get over it. Bring on Chinese Democracy.

If he's so | 9/1/2008, 5:30 am EST

yesterday then how can it be that everytime any related news come out all the blogs talk about him?

shelby lynne | 9/1/2008, 2:34 pm EST

Perhaps it was a bit much — maybe they should have just strung the bastard up by his balls!

I love the law | 9/2/2008, 3:16 am EST

I think that leaker should fry. Anybody who would think about releasing Chinese Democracy, including Axl, should suffer the harshest of consequences. Long live Slash.

Do you no who the fuck u r | 9/2/2008, 9:42 am EST

I suppose all of you Axl haters are worth millions, and your even larger than life sitting behind your computer screen placing judgement on a subject you surely no nothing about, purely your speculations are not only unjustified they are immature and lastly are not even worthy of this conversation. If you are man enough to break the law, you better be man enough to pay the consequences for your actions.

U MORONS | 9/2/2008, 10:39 am EST

Axl had nothin to do with this guy gettin busted, the FBI did, do u research before u post, idiots

saul hudson | 9/2/2008, 12:24 pm EST

new guns n’ roses: cover band

Bryan | 9/15/2008, 12:49 pm EST

For those that say that Axl shouldn’t have the GnR name and slash should, u need to do some research. Axl owns the rights to the name and therefore kept it for himself. U may call him dumb, but he’s one of the smartest guys out there cause he owns the rights to his music. Few musicians ever get to say that. It took Nikki Sixx like 20 years to get the rights to all of Motley Crue’s music, and he paid a shitload of money for it too.
