Death Cab at the DNC: John McCain Scares Chris Walla to Death

Okay, here it goes:

I think John McCain is losing his marbles and that he can’t be trusted. I think that his hotheaded, impulsive mentality makes him an incredibly dangerous candidate for the office of President.

There, I said it. He has given to our country selflessly in uniform, risked his life for our freedoms and committed himself to a life of public service. And it’s time for him to fucking retire. Seriously. Like, I’ll totally buy the mai tais or piña coladas or whatever the fuck you want to drink, Senator. You name it, really; it’s on me.

Can I go further? I would like to, as I’ve just found out that McCain will likely be leaking his pick for VP right after tonight’s rally at the Mile High Stadium in Denver, where Barack Obama will officially accept my party’s nomination of him for the office of President. That’s MY party you’re gonna crash, you rat.

Now, there’s a long history of mudslinging and dirty pool in the race to the White House, and we’ve already seen a fair bit of it. But historically, each party’s convention week is off limits, to a degree: It’s diplomacy, a show of respect, to allow your opponent the spotlight for four days. Certainly there are ads and press releases from the rival team, but there’s no precedent for a headline-stealer like a VP announcement. Let’s refer, briefly, to a statement issued by McCain campaign manager Rick Davis on March 11, 2008:

“John McCain is now the presumptive nominee of the Republican Party. It is critical, as we prepare to face off with whomever the Democrats select as their nominee, that we all follow John’s lead and run a respectful campaign focused on the issues and values that are important to the American people.

Throughout the primary election we saw John McCain reject the type of politics that degrade our civics, and this will not change as he prepares to run head-to-head against the Democratic nominee.”

Really? So that makes McCain a total dick, too, in my estimation. Even if we give him the benefit of the doubt, and assume that it’s a classy move for him to hijack the narrative of the convention in Denver by announcing the winner of the veepstakes, how can we explain all the bullshit ads his campaign has been running? How does the Paris Hilton ad (the least offensive of the recent ones, in my opinion) constitute a “respectful campaign focused on the issues and values that are important to the American people”? It does not.

And those are just the official ads. John McCain is a guy who is tacitly endorsing (i.e. definitely not condemning) the American Issues Project, a 501c(4), by allowing them to run wild with an ad suggesting Obama is a terrorist by proxy, because he’s shaken the hand of Bill Ayers a few times. This is the same kind of smear that destroyed McCain’s own primary run in 2000 (a Karl Rove affiliated 527 ran an ad suggesting that John and Cindy’s adopted Bangladeshi daughter was, in fact, a love child, in case you don’t remember), and John Kerry’s run in 2004 (the infamous “swift boat” ads).

John Sidney McCain, I do not question your undying love for our country and your service to it. It goes without saying that our soldiers, all our brothers and sisters in uniform at home and overseas, are the glue holding this nation together. But please, stop being such a twit, and be true to your word. If you’d just provide some honesty, and be respectful of your opponent and show some dignity, I wouldn’t feel the need to be such an asshole about all this. But for the moment I don’t feel like I have much of a choice, because I love my country too. And you honestly scare me to death.

Like what DollarTwenty, said I don’t know who I’m voting for. Honestly McCains’ age plus many of his policies worries me and Obama supports infanticide. (see born alive act) I pretty much hate them both.

anon | 9/4/2008, 4:50 pm EST

some of you have to be kidding me? you call obama phony and mccain a saint? not only is obama much more intelligent and qualified than mccain and palin combined (harvard law vs ba at u. of idaho, hell i have fucking ba)he is much more sincere and well spoken. i’m not saying i agree with all of obama’s policy ideas but come on, he’s hands down the better candidate; can anyone seriously tell me one good reason to vote for mccain other than his ‘miltary/foreign policy ideas/experience’ because that’s a fucking joke. he crashed three planes before getting shot down on the 4th and was handed his career by daddy in law after divorcing his first wife. what i’m trying to say is, walla, you’re the man.

DL | 9/2/2008, 4:02 am EST

being a pow does not automatically mean we owe McCain the presidency. there are also a lot of sob’s in the military, and i’m sick of always saying how great they are JUST BECAUSE THEY JOIN. i’ve known a lot of pretty piss-poor guys who joined the military and that doesn’t make them magically good. but don’t get me wrong, i am not a military-hater, i’ve known good guys who’ve joined the military, too. i love my country and the military that protects us when necessary. i do appreciate our military but the point is to use it PROPERLY and not just to forward corrupt agendas. i feel sorry for our soldiers being sacrificed like for pawns for bad purposes. I WENT TO NORMANDY AND MOURNED THE LOSS OF MILITARY LIVES SPENT FOR A JUST CAUSE. which is not the case in IRAQ. but i don’t blame the soldiers, i blame the leadership.

but please, someone is not a great guy just because he was a pow. i thank him for his time served, but not automatically that makes him smarter or a better leader. we give too much of a free pass to McCain about that.

j | 9/1/2008, 3:37 pm EST

McCain and Obama are two sides of the same coin. Both want to be President and have compromised their own moral standards to get as far as they have. Both cater to special interests and those interests take priority over yours. Vote for either, doesn’t much matter.

lawrencenyc | 9/1/2008, 2:07 pm EST

f@#k obama he is good at reading things other people wrote for him

CURIOUS GEORGE O8

jerry | 8/31/2008, 6:54 am EST

ThugBug if you think bush has less unemployment than Clinton did you’re retarded. Where are you getting your facts from?

dollartwenty | 8/30/2008, 6:16 pm EST

Oh Chris, your blog is as bad as the newest DCFC album. You may think McCain as a hot tempered war monger but I don’t think he’s a phony like Obama. *sigh* but I still don’t know who I’m going to vote for. Actually I may just vote for Bob Barr, because I don’t want to say I voted to help put McCain or Obama in the White House.

Totally Bummed | 8/30/2008, 12:43 pm EST

I absolutely love DCFC, but I have to say I am shocked at how insulting and arrogant Walla is here. Yeah this is America and I suspect Chris thinks he’s carrying on the torch like Vedder, Young and Springsteen, but his comments are just so one sided and crass it makes me cringe. Chris, Eddie, Neil et al- please just shut up and play your guitars.

ET | 8/29/2008, 9:44 pm EST

As an addendum to my previous post, I am more left than right and teach at at a Boston university (not BU!!!!!!). So as you can see, I more liberal than conservative and hate what the current administration has done to our country. But Walla was out of line in his comments.

ET | 8/29/2008, 9:40 pm EST

I am a huge Death Cab fan and a moderate, politically. I am appalled by Chris Walla’s blog today that accuses McCain of upstaging the DNC by announcing his running mate (which didn’t happen) and using such unprofessional and obnoxious language such as: “So that makes McCain a total dick, too”. I am 50 years old and love
DCFC’s music. I follow them, am a member of their fan club (oldest I’m sure!) and will be at their Boston show (in the front row- on the floor) on October 3rd, but I’ve lost alot of respect for Chris Walla reading his latest installment of his blog. I loved their interview on CNN but this goes overboard.

L | 8/29/2008, 8:31 pm EST

If Obama wins, I will have to laugh if he fails with all his “change”. I counted last last night in his acceptance speech that he said change 13 times. The govenment can barley handle the shit we give them to do now!!!!!! Why give them more things to f**k up? If you let the government control to much and dictate your life you might as well be living in a communist country. Which is something I would never want to see!!!

Visionitin | 8/29/2008, 5:53 pm EST

Why is it Republics only nominate people who were at the bottom of the educational level. We do not need another “dumb” guy who got to through because of “daddy.” The Naval Academy, if it had any guts, would have made him drop out…but no, daddy wouldn’t approve. I know he spent five-and-a-half years as a POW. That’s becoming like Guiliani’s “noun, verb, and 9-11″

james | 8/29/2008, 5:06 pm EST

its like choosing between a giant douche and a turd sandwhich

Ahh... suburbia | 8/29/2008, 3:01 pm EST

I am shocked that instead of a side by side comparison of obama, mccain, and bush you all are bashing parties and people. I have had two family members die in the war for oil, my job was pulled out from under me a couple of years ago and now belongs to someone in India, my home foreclosed after that, I can barely afford gas to get to my crappy newer job and the only person I see that is even concerned with issues in this country other than rising oil costs in Obama. If you look at Mccain on the issues he has sided with Bush continuously and that scares me too! Obama and Mccain have made mistakes early on, but they are human so to think of them as perfect is pure fantasy. I was beside myself that Mccain was running at first, but now I have seen his patterns and mood swings and am not impressed, and the only reason he picked Palin for VP is because she is a woman and he would lose if he didn’t pull the soccer mom vote which really disappointed me since I am a woman and his chauvinistic attitude in the past proves that this is just for votes. She has years less experience than Obama. If McCain dies she will take over and be completely overwhelmed! At 73 years old your brain does not like to accept new ways of thinking. Instead of reading every little bash news article read the facts on each candidate and then make your desicion… it’s about how you feel not the journalists and others who try to shove stuff down your throat.

allleos | 8/29/2008, 1:25 pm EST

Talk about more of the same BIDEN? What a chump choice for Obama. He made a choice that took no Ba**S at all. I just wonder who has the bigger ego. How about McCain’s pick for vp? That took intelligence, nerve, guts things that Obama has none of. Sarah Palin has more guts tham Obama does. Obama is a true Chicago thug politician.

I hear that the Republican National Convention is being sponsored by Depends and their logo will be everywhere.

ThugBug | 8/29/2008, 11:16 am EST

As you write this from your personal PC and your little BMW in the driveway….we have poo poo lives.

Bah - Bah - is that the sheep sound? You walk right into their footsteps.

Think for yourself….you would think America is on the verge of a fall? It’s really not THAT bad - o.k.

Look at the numbers….W has LESS unemployment than Clinton….

What a bunch of sheep….to ignorant to even realize it.

Pathetic….

stupid Republicans | 8/29/2008, 11:06 am EST

blah blah blah,,,,,,,Obama may not be the best candidate,,,,but he has my vote. If anyone with a thinking brain votes for a republican, they have obviously been in a coma for the last 8 years,,,,,or have somehow benefitited from it,,,,,,,,,really people,,,open your eyes,,,,do you really think we are on the right path,,,,,,,,our country is broke, millions can barely afford food, let alone gas, heating, medicine, education,,,,,,good god,,,,and you want a president who is clearly from the old gaurd? What are you thinking. We do need change, any change,,,,and Obama is the only one at this point that can point us in that direction and away from this crap we are in now.

ThugBugHugs | 8/29/2008, 8:34 am EST

You prove why:
1. Musicians aren’t journalists
2. Music and politics don’t mix
3. You have no clue

Hey - I guess since you are not very good at selling music - you’re going to try selling us down the river?

What a joke. You are a complete and utter joke.

DCFC has become the Keith Olbermann for RS - both idiots and both breaking the bank - in the WRONG WAY….

JUSTICE | 8/29/2008, 12:13 am EST

McCain and Bush are one in the same. Things will only get worse if he is elected. I am from Arizona and know what kind of crook he is. Just look at all his scandals and near misses. Obama is a saint compared to this scam artist. It is a sad day when the GOP have no one other than McCain to run. Only by using the slight of hand are they close at all. Who really cares what happen in vietnam years ago. The time is now.

Theodore Lopez | 8/29/2008, 12:09 am EST

WHat a crock. When your opponent spends his time serving on assorted boards and committees with former radical leftist terrorists you point thta out. If Mccain was pals with the IMperial Grand Cyclops of whatever the hell it is these days of the KKK you can bet that’s an issue. And when your opponent offers nothing but soothing baby talk, all style and no substance that is an issue. Do you want a commander in chief or do you want a male Oprah running the country? So get over it. Besides Obama (who has made a point of claiming to be ‘above the fray’) is just as capable of playing dirty pool as anyone i.e. the snickerings of mccain being “confused”, the insinuations by surrogates that McCain doesn’t deserve the respect he has for his actions in Vietnam, the lie about campaign finance reform, the smug insinuation republicans would try to point out that “by the way he’s black”

I really like your music chris but you’re either an hypocrite and imbecile or a naif (what exactly are you doing analyzing politics anyway? shouldn’t you be recording a new album or something?). So listen, cowboy up, try and find your inner cynic and try and see Obama for what he really is: the political equivalent of New Kids on the Block.

Marine Corps Devil Pup | 8/29/2008, 12:06 am EST

Who ever thinks that Obama is the right man for the job has got their head so far up their ass that you can see their teeth when they smile.

allleos | 8/28/2008, 10:12 pm EST

Obama is a phoney and a fraud. His “friends” are people that are racist bigots, and I suspect that in his “heart” Obama is the same. McCain my not be the best choice, but he is far better than Obama ever could be. Obama has done NOTHING at all yet he thinks he is ready to take on the most important job in the world. Keep dreaming Obama.

right on | 8/28/2008, 9:56 pm EST

MCShame, He states in an infomercial that he and Obama are at peace on this night cause it is when an Arc type said we had a dream. What a dick! When Mr. Mccain’s State had not recognize Dr. MLK Jr as one who has a greater interest then self until 2003.
If you are supporting an old man who self admits to not using the internet then you deserve what you will get when Mr. O leaves the Senate and walks threw the doors to our White House F!@K the GOP!!!!

True American | 8/28/2008, 9:55 pm EST

To everyone who will vote for Obama, Do you know who he is?
What is his past history?
What has he accomplished?
What is this “CHANGE” that he speaks of?

I am a very proud, strong American, and I even see McCain as being very liberal, but he is the best of the two to pick from.

Obama has been in the Senate for a very short time. He has never been in an executive position to prove himself.

He even had to work out a land deal with the property next to the house to afford to purchase the home he lives in now. If Obama didn’t get a multi-million dollar book deal he may have been another poor unlucky American that bought a house he could not have paid for and proceed to get forclosed on.

where are all his family members besides his immediate family? I have not seen a single one.

Where are his “good” friends at? Every name that comes into contact with him has a bad past!

Get real people, Obama will trash this place, and you can only blame yourselves, the Obama voters!

Nancy | 8/28/2008, 8:05 pm EST

Chris Walla doesn’t question MCCAINS loyalty to this country. We can’t say the same about Obama he has bad judgement and when called on it. He’ll just say he was being bone headed and the media and bloggers are like oh okay. I don’t know how many states there are in the U.S. but lets make MCCAIN look too old to remember how many houses he has. Or the best one of all Obama announces his VP as the next President of the US. Priceless. Oh and let not forget the VP calls Obama - Obama America. What? Where are the bloggers on this one>>>

Anonymous | 8/28/2008, 8:04 pm EST

McCain and Bush are far more the true definition of a ‘terrorist’, than Bill Ayers ever was.

madamezelda | 8/28/2008, 8:01 pm EST

Hence the term “Reluctant Republican”… the P.C. term for a Republican with common sense and/or conscience. This November, these poor bastards will have to choose between loyalty to their party and loyalty to their country.

Chris, thanks for courage and honesty in addressing the “fear” that the possibility of a President McCain inspires in you. All mudslinging aside, this is the bottom line, isn’t it?

Nancy | 8/28/2008, 7:58 pm EST

I agree with bob people should be scared of Obamas judgement. At least even the person who wrote this column doesn’t questions McCains Loyalty to this country can we say the same about the OBAMAS. I think not!!!

Chuck | 8/28/2008, 7:41 pm EST

Who at Rolling Stone decided to give a child a Blog? Are you really upset that McCain is not trying to influence a 501c(4) when doing so would be a violation of the ridiculous campaign finance reforms he helped pass. Given the choice between a political lightweight (name one real legislative accomplishment and then go look up what part if any he played in its passage) and a “Republican” that only won due to the Open Primary participation of non-Republicans, I’ll stay home. I’ve never sat out a Presidential election before but one of these guys is going to be president and it isn’t going to be with my assistance.

Anonymous | 8/28/2008, 7:33 pm EST

Yeah, there isn’t a single 527 that’s democratically backed.

America Coming Together, Move On.org, Grassroots Democrats, American Family Voices… do you want me to go on?

Come on already. This is hypocrisy and intellectual dishonesty at it’s finest.

Bob | 8/28/2008, 7:22 pm EST

Sorry Chris, but Obama did more than shake Domestic Terrorists Ayer’s hand. He launched one of his earliest campaigns from Ayer’s house and worked on the same foundation fro 5 years together. Please do some research on the guy you are campaigning for.

justme | 8/28/2008, 7:08 pm EST

Yea, just like Oblama respected Hillary’s wins. Oblama is the lowest excuse for a politician in my lifetime.

mr roboto | 8/28/2008, 7:05 pm EST

he’d send us back to the stoneage.

Anonymous | 8/28/2008, 6:57 pm EST

McCain = war

lucky | 8/28/2008, 6:47 pm EST

Right on! Personally, I am appalled at Senator McCain’s behavior…I think I’m more upset at myself for believing he was a different kind of republican - a maverick! I guess the jokes on me!!!!
