Remember back in June when those nine possibly Chinese Democracy-bound Guns n’ Roses songs leaked? At the time, the man who admitted leaking them, Antiquiet blogger Kevin Skwerl, told Rock Daily “If legal proceedings come my way, I’ll face them 100 percent. I’m not afraid of that. I did what I did, and I’ll face the music if I have to” after a meeting with the FBI. Skwerl (real name Kevin Cogill) will face the law, as he was arrested this morning at his Culver City, California home for suspicion of violating federal copyright laws. According to the FBI, Cogill admitted to posting the songs when questioned. Cogill is set to appear at the U.S. District Court today, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig Missakian.

Eddie Trunk played leaks on air in 2006 and Metal Sludge posted these 9 leaks on their site for a short time. So i guess Axl can only come after the little man. This is bs.

Free the poor fella

areyoukiddingme | 8/27/2008, 3:18 pm EST

They come after the SOURCE which is that guy. He openly admitted to distributing them which is a federal crime – period. All you babies crying over the fact that this loser is arrested need to realize that he was using the GnR fanbase to gain publicity for his stupid blog. If he really only cared about getting the music in your hands he’d have posted them anonymously like every other person on the internet. I don’t feel sorry for him at all and I hope he gets the maximum sentence.

Also I’m reading a lot of talk about “backlash” against GnR. This has nothing to do with Axl and whether Axl supports it or not is irrelevant. A similiar thing happened to some Ryan Adams fans back in 2005 and Ryan himself vocally did not support the indictment of his fans but it was out of his control just as it is out of Axl’s in this case.

Guns and who??? | 8/27/2008, 3:38 pm EST

why does anyone care? are they relavent, does anyone believe this album matters at all. if slash isn’t there- its not even gnr

Dada | 8/27/2008, 4:12 pm EST

Yeah, Slash certainly catapulted Velvet Revolver to unseen heights….. (sigh)

C | 8/27/2008, 4:18 pm EST

oh great we got the typical Slash fan here. Wasn’t Slash the one that left GnR ??? yeah and wasn’t Slash the one who wanted to go see Guns N Roses in vegas ??? Axl Rose is Guns N’ Roses !!! you put the rest of the band together and you get a medicore singer.

jeff | 8/27/2008, 4:21 pm EST

Gonna call the FBI…gonna make it a federal case…gonna put it right out in your face…

LegalMAN | 8/27/2008, 4:24 pm EST

exactly…Axl and GNR are going to receive a ton of backlash from this but this is all the record company’s doing…they have invested a ton of $ in this album and what that guy did was illegal…the record company is just trying to protect their investment. So Axl bashers should go elsewhere to complain, this was hardly his doing.

Hey Guns N who…actually every single GNR article posted on RS site has garnered much attention, their articles always have the most feedback and or repsonses…so in short, yes people do still care…and you obviously cared enought to read this article and take time out of your day to post a repsonse, so i guess you care a little.

doucheMcdouchebagger | 8/27/2008, 4:31 pm EST

areyoukiddingme is totally right about this guy just using the leak for his own goals… but regardless of that – its copyright infringement!

what a frickin sense of entitlement. oh look at me all acting the new way cause of the internets! i can do whatever i want cause of the internets!

im just excited when you can kill people anon through the internet an suddenly murder becomes a debate. suckit copyleft entitled douchers.

Dada | 8/27/2008, 4:42 pm EST

Slash was a key component of the OLD GNR, and has nothing to do with the NEW GNR (unless they reunite, which would be just a bonus). If you still own a giant black tophat then pull your head out of it. You are going loopy from the fumes.

AxlFAN | 8/27/2008, 4:51 pm EST

GNR and specifically Axl has worked and spent a ton of dough to make this record…and then this guy comes in and leaks 9 tracks on his blog…yup that is against the law people, regardless if its BS or not this is wrong…anyone watch a DVD recently…the FBI warns you of copyright and explains the penalties. GNR and Axl are not at fault here

gfjhfhnfn | 8/27/2008, 5:15 pm EST

Justice served. D;

Swingline | 8/27/2008, 5:17 pm EST

Axl would be better off stringing this along and never releasing the album. The publicity he gets when its released will never equal what leaked tracks and endless speculation seem to constantly generate.

Theskywalker | 8/27/2008, 5:19 pm EST

I understand that violating copyright laws is unethical and illegal. As an artist I would have a hard time approving of anyone getting cuffed and stuffed by the law on behalf of protecting my creative expression.

Duff | 8/27/2008, 5:21 pm EST

Yep, this guy is guilty as charged. Simple as that.

One more thing, though: why is there always one a–hole who posts in these forums about whether the artists in question are “relevant”? My response is: RELEVANT TO WHOM AND WHAT?? THAT’S what’s important. I just don’t get these douchebags obsession with “relevance”. Just go away from this forum and go find a Jonas Brothers forum to swoon in.

Confused | 8/27/2008, 5:24 pm EST

Hmmm…interesting Theskywalker! So, if you were a store owner you would have a hard time seeing someone cuffed and hauled away for stealing your goods without paying? I see…

The Dude | 8/27/2008, 5:29 pm EST

Axl Rose in his time was a talet worthy of some recognision and within the original line-up he could have been arguably the greatest frontman ever but the truth is that with out some amazing talent to couple up with, he’s nothing. This is the magic of great rock ‘n’ roll bands – When the sum of the parts transcends any individual and creates something beyond what any individual can. The interesting thing is that the loss of even one guy can be enough to suck all the magic out (listening Eddie V?). The magic that was Guns n Roses ended before the Illusions albums ever even came out.

elwood | 8/27/2008, 5:52 pm EST

My question is how did he get it in the first place??

Obviously someone in GnR’s camp let it out… so sue them.

Anonymous | 8/27/2008, 5:56 pm EST

Perfect Crime.

Hes goin down, get in the ring MF’R!

Kliff | 8/27/2008, 5:56 pm EST

If you steal from me, you deserve to pay the price. I am glad this guy is busted. Only musicians are being told it’s wrong to make money off of art. Try stealing stuff from a museum and see how far you get.

Anonymous | 8/27/2008, 6:00 pm EST

This guy is the equivalent of the paparazzi. He belongs in jail.

Former GNR fan | 8/27/2008, 6:33 pm EST

This is ridiculous. All of you people who think he should go to jail. He should be celebrated having some balls, unlike Axl Rose, and actually getting some new music out to fans! Who instead of releasing the fucking 14 year in the making cd want to sue his fans instead! Go f*ck yourself Axl!!

Seriously | 8/27/2008, 6:58 pm EST

Wanting 15 minutes of internet fame does not equal having balls.

doucheMcdouchebagger | 8/27/2008, 7:44 pm EST

ah right Forner GnR Fan-

because Axl took as long as he wanted to make an album that may or may not suck instead of releasing an album every 18 months it deserves a leak…

But, Seriously! | 8/27/2008, 7:56 pm EST

Who gives a f*ck if he wanted 15 minutes of internet fame. Atleast he provided the fans with some new songs to listen to. Something Axl Rose has failed to do in 10+ years. Since when did “The Most Dangerous Band In The World” become a bunch of f*cking yuppie suits!!

Slash | 8/27/2008, 8:18 pm EST

He probably released low quality MP3’s…what’s the big deal? All you b1tch3s would rip it with iTunes anyways? Once the tracks are leaked, it really does no good to bust this guy…its like pee in a pool….once its in there, its IN THERE. So why spend money on this? Better to spend $$ to come out with a box set with cool shizzle you can’t download…like autographed items or something. Record companies just need to give up the fight…its pointless.

Joe | 8/27/2008, 9:01 pm EST

I like how “Slash” had so many balls he couldn’t write the word “bitch”. But I digress. I’ll reiterate my earlier point. No one generates as many blogs for one article than two guys, Axl Rose and Bono. The Dude, you do make an interesting point about Axl and the band that was GNR. However, to say that he’s NOTHING without the band is just shortsighted. That lineup came up with arguably the greatest hard rock record of the last 25 years in Appetite for Destruction. That’s a little hard to equal or top. Axl has been tilting at the alternative/industrial flavored windmill that is Chinese Democracy for a long time. He has not attempted to make Appetite 2. How about a little benefit of the doubt? If he never comes out with it, he never comes out with it. No money out of anyones’ pocket except his.

Josh | 8/27/2008, 9:35 pm EST

Well, that sucks for that guy. If he had leaked without flaunting it, he’d probably be in good shape. He has to know Axl Rose is one litigious motherf***er.

Congratulations on your status as a cybermartyr, genius. Don’t bend over for the soap.

electric child | 8/27/2008, 10:27 pm EST

Axl still sucks……does anybody out there really care about axl and a few sidemen?……god i miss cobain

moe | 8/27/2008, 10:28 pm EST

Two words for ya skwerl, “Butt Plug”. I’d start investing in gettin one. You’ll need it for the next 10 years jackass, when they ship your ass down the river and off to prison. If it was my music, I’d a hunted you down and skinned your ass alive. I think he should go down bigass time for copyright infringement. Thanks jerkass. Now Axl may have second doubts of releasing the album now that a dick like you leaked his material out on the internet so people could steal it and make judgmental remarks of it. Think about the tarnish you created. I hope they nail your balls to the cross and set an example of you to the assholes of the world who download and steal others music then post it on their website to gain popularity to millions of the artists fans. Just where did you get the songs? Was piracy involved in this? A source my ass.

GNR_loses_big_time | 8/27/2008, 10:41 pm EST

GNR and Axl have lost so much money by not releasing this album YEARS before downloading existed. Tons of people would have bought this album YEARS ago – now…even fans will download it for free.

GNR_loses_big_time | 8/27/2008, 10:41 pm EST

marko1965 | 8/28/2008, 12:25 am EST

Kevin Cogill says he’s ready to face the music. If he’s lucky the music will be Chinese Democracy and he’ll have another bunch of years before he has to face it.

But Seriously | 8/28/2008, 2:11 am EST

My point is don’t feel sorry for his ass. He brought this on himself. If he just wanted to get the material into the hands of the fans he could have easily done it anonymously.

HOPE HE GENERATED A LOT OF MONEY FROM THOSE AWESOME GOOGLE ADS ON HIS WORDPRESS BLOG!!!!

Elmo | 8/28/2008, 2:48 am EST

That man shared weapons of mass destruction….. of good taste in music

bluezboy8 | 8/28/2008, 3:05 am EST

I certainly cannot claim to know what today’s younger generation honestly thinks of what the concept of real and actual ownership of creative properties stand for, but if the Napster decision of a few years back didn’t adequately convey the message, than let this joker enjoy the infamy of the title of creative thief while he boasts from behind bars.

Jeff | 8/28/2008, 3:11 am EST

blah blah blah who cares blah blah blah where’s slash blah blah blah it’s an axl solo project blah blah blah china will be a democracy before chinese democracy comes out blah blah blah zzzzzzzzzzzzz

The DEMOS (yes, they’re demos from 2004 or earlier) ROCK. Although “Skwerl” is my musical Robin Hood, I hope he does time.

Ever notice Axl hardly ever does interviews and only announced a TENTATIVE release date one time in the 14 years and millions of dollars he’s spent making this? He doesn’t seek the attention. Other people make it up so they have something to write about. That’s a fact. Call him a prick, call him crazy, but you can’t say dude doesn’t value his craft and want it done his way.

It’s a shame a couple of jackasses screw that up for him. It’s also a shame that I’m a hypocrite who listens to the leaks and loves (except IRS) every second of them!

Harry Peratesties | 8/28/2008, 8:40 am EST

So I guess the streets are safe if the government has time to pursue this kind of task?

Benny | 8/28/2008, 12:07 pm EST

Some people seem confused. It wasn’t GNR or Axl that went after this asswipe that released the songs but the feds, because it is a felony. GNR can only sue him in a civil suit, but that remains to be seen if they will do it or not. For now GNR is not involved in this courtwise.

senda puta | 8/28/2008, 12:34 pm EST

i’ve heard the new leaks and they are all shit. the only good thing axl can do with his life is to get the old band back together and do a tour. this is not guns n roses anymore.

GNRFAN | 8/28/2008, 4:18 pm EST

I have heard the leaks as well, and they are without a doubt the best GNR tunes that have been released since AFD…Why would Axl want to get the old lineup back together? They tried to recreate that sound with VR…they just looked like idiots trying to still be rock stars at the age of 45. At least Axl has tried to change his style and grow musically…do you people still like the crap you liked 20 years ago? I for one would laugh at Axl if he wrote AFD2…Axl at the age of 45 writing about drugs, sex, etc…give me a break!

Really?!?! | 8/28/2008, 4:33 pm EST

Why would it be pathetic for Axl to still write about the fun things like Sex,Drugs & Rock n Roll?? I mean that’s probably what he still does. The dude is 46 and single with no kids.

Izzy Stradlin | 8/28/2008, 5:56 pm EST

Wow! how many of you guys are still living in 1988 when G’N'R were actually meaningful?

no gnr. axl solo album | 8/28/2008, 7:41 pm EST

new names for this band:

-axl n’ axl
-axl n’ bumble
-axl n’ tommy
-axl n’ dizzy
-axl n’ cover band
I don’t remember the name of the fucking drummer. axl has fired like 3 drummers in the last 5 years. finck is gone so is kentucky fried chicken.about 10 producers fired in the making of this record (mike clink, roy thomas baker, moby, blah, blah, blah. slash gone, izzy gone, duff gone, doug goldstein gone. LOL. who’s the douchebag??

hAMBONE | 8/28/2008, 9:22 pm EST

AXL DIDNT WRITE THE EARLY GUNS TUNES ANYWAY. IT WAS THE OTHERS

Macaco | 8/29/2008, 6:01 am EST

It’s suprising how a band that lasted only 6 years and that has disapered over a decade ago still generates such curiosity and debtate. But the truth is that VR are good but average. The band is like their albums – a good collection of singles but far from being a classic end-to-end album such as AFD.

GNR | 8/29/2008, 9:45 am EST

Actually Axl wrote most of the bands greatest hits…Sweet Child, Patience, November Rain, etc were all Axl. The other band members hated playing these songs but Axl made them. So who actually had the vision and talent? Oh and in response to a previous post, GNR are still very relevant today…because they havent released any new material and people still care shows how important they were and still could be to the industry…they were together for 6 years and produced 3 albums and sold over 100 million records, and broke tour records from 91-93….they are still relevant. Peole still care because they are that good

Hambone | 8/29/2008, 12:16 pm EST

I’ll give it to you that he wrote November Rain. But the real guns songs were writin by Izzy. Im sure axl came up with the intro to Sweet child. He wrote most of the lyrics yes but the music is from the others.

Michael Syphillis Schirmer | 8/29/2008, 4:59 pm EST

I saw GNR last year because they’re on my bucket list. Ummm…Here’s the deal. GNR (the original band) is relevant. The new set up? Not so much. I do feel bad for Axl because whatever the fuck he did to his voice has ruined it. He can’t sing with his signature falsetto scream if it were to save his life. On top of that the freak left the stage (and I’m not exaggerating) at least 2 times every 5 minutes…hello? Coke anyone? It was pathetic.
Axl and Courtney Love are one in the same. They both have records coming out soon for 10 years. Hilarious.

Jeff | 8/30/2008, 5:12 am EST

Hambone,

Yeah, Izzy wrote the bulk of the MUSIC to AFD and most of the awesome songs on Use Your Illusion (Pretty Tied Up, for example).

And uh, who shows up to play with Axl every now and then? Oh yeah, Izzy.

Izzy’s on board. Why aren’t you?

Stop the Crap | 8/30/2008, 9:32 am EST

…and put out the CD already before Axl is extinct like the dinosaurs.

David | 8/31/2008, 6:37 pm EST

By the time this CD is released there will be democracy in China…and it will be a
posthumous release…

Fiori Rose | 6/13/2009, 2:18 am EST

Vi posso solo dire ke sosterrò Axl a vita e che lui è il migkior cantante rock al MONDO!!!e che Chinese Democrary è Bellissimooooo!!!!!!
