The Doors Owe $5 Million to Densmore, Morrison Estate

8/22/08, 10:50 am EST

The Doors‘ Ray Manzarek and Robby Kreiger will have to pay $5 million to drummer John Densmore and the parents of Jim Morrison and Pamela Courson, Morrison’s widow, as the legal battle between the former band members finally reached its conclusion. The lawsuit started in 2003, when Densmore sued his band mates after they “improperly invoked The Doors’ name and images” when Kreiger and Manzarek toured as “The Doors of the 21st Century.” Densmore didn’t object to the duo playing Doors music when they toured, he just asked they not use the name, logo or any Morrison-era imagery, which the duo eventually did. This isn’t the first time the surviving members of the Doors have disagreed since the band splintered. Densmore routinely rejects the Doors music from being used for commercial purposes — each member has equal veto power over business deals — denying possible deals with Cadillac and Apple, which the other two members approved of. “Morrison had been adamant against doing commercials and Densmore wanted to honor Morrison’s memory,” the appeals court said in its ruling.

I saw the Doors of the 21st Century with Ian and they rocked NYC! I also saw the Riders on The Storm and they were great also. This music is great and to hear it live without Jim is still awesome.
Densmore is a joke. He gets Jim’s parents, who Jim had no real relationship with, and sues his friends.
Densmore should either join with them on the road or get out of the way! Densmore is a disgrace….

realms of bliss | 8/27/2008, 10:45 am EST

I saw The Doors of the 21st Century about 3 years ago with Ian Astbury, and I, along with the entire audience, thought they were great!! A true experience of Doors music, and Astbury carried himself well as a substitute for Morrison. He did not pretend to be Jim, but he sure played his role well just the same. He sang pretty good, but did not attempt to scream certain vocals like Jim did. He could not. Anyway, what’s the problem? Neither Ray nor Robbie are pretending they are the same magical group as was when they were the Doors. And no Doors fan is going to be confused by the similar name, or feel ripped off. We all knew what we were in store for before we bought any tickets. I appreciate that Densemore balked on making TV commercials out of the music, but I object to his militant stand against using a similar name. Big deal.
And to those here who say the Doors sucked you remind me of a joke. Two Americans were visiting the world famous art museum in Paris, The Louvre. As they were leaving, a French guard overheard one American saying to the other, “I don’t think much of this place.” The French guard responded, “Monsieur, the Louvre is not on trial here… you are.” ———– The Doors are not on trial here… you are.

The Doors are a frickin awsome band, no questions asked

Jims dad lives next to my aunt in california. He is a very nice man but i feel that he wants no part in the doors. Oh, and Jim’s mom passed away a few years ago so its really just going to Admiral Morrison, Pam, and Densmore. Not the “parents of Jim Morrison.”

stupid "doors?bores" | 8/24/2008, 1:07 pm EST

The Doors are pure rock and roll, period.

Hey Rockin’ Olson, Densmore does tour. He has a wonderful jazz band called Tribaljazz. Check ‘em out.

the doors have been over rated for 40 years now — why do the other 2 owe 5 mill? at least they are still out playing the overly sanctified drivel —- dont people who go to see then know that morrison is dead?

I have to agree with John Densmore, unlike some other bands that haver been over exposed with TV ad’s, I can still stomach listening to some Door’s music.

Before Jim’s death the members used the music in an auto ad and Jim was furious. Let’s face it there were four members of the Door’s and most of us remember them by name, to stick some guy up front that kind of looks and sounds like Jim does not make the band “THE DOORS”… it make them Creedence Clearwater Revisited. If you know what I mean. Thanks John for protecting your band from shooting itself in the foot again.

RS

P.S. Ray, can’t wait to see the new Door’s movie your working on. Love you all.

Who wants a mustache ride???

Densmore is a big cry-baby. He can’t tour because he wrecked his hearing by not wearing protection in concerts and is wielding his power over the rest of the Doors. He doesn’t bother to talk about how The Doors recorded 2 horrible albums after Morrison died that I’m sure Jim would have found atrocious. Jim didn’t get a chance to overrule that decision. I do find it interesting that Morrison was the one who vehemently argued against the Doors using “Light My Fire” in a Buick commercial that subsequently led to the legal agreement that all members must agree to an action as that was one of just a handful of songs that he didn’t write. Robby Krieger wrote their biggest hit. Oh well, I’m sure none of the guys or their families are in the poorhouse. Densmore is still a pussy. Repent for the sin of putting out those 2 shitty albums and then maybe I’ll give his opinions some credence!

They should have toured as the “Moops”

Jughead | 8/22/2008, 4:25 pm EST

I agree with Mojo Risin. Morrison is in Africa living in a rain forest and living off the land and swinging from tree to tree with his monkey friends, just like Tarzan. In a few years, once all the trees are chopped down for development, he’ll be discovered again and the Doors will regroup and go on reunion tour. Looking forward to that!

completely agree with parker and nicman612

jmurphy | 8/22/2008, 3:31 pm EST

Headline is *wrong*. The Doors don’t owe the money, Manzarek and Krieger do. The Doors is the Morrison estate, and *all* three surviving members, *not* any other combination.

That was the whole point of Densmore’s lawsuit(s).

Mr. Mojo Risin' | 8/22/2008, 1:53 pm EST

He’s in Africa, of course

Parker | 8/22/2008, 12:57 pm EST

I have so much respect for John Densmore. I think Jim is smiling right now, wherever he is.

Nicman612 | 8/22/2008, 12:52 pm EST

I saw The Doors of the 21st Century and they SUCKED!. While I love The Cult, Ian Astbury was NO substitute for Jim Morrison. I think Densmore was right in trying to maintain the integrity of their legacy.

They were asked not to used the name or images and they chose to do it anyway. It seems cut and dry.

Should’ve left well enough alone.
