Staind’s Aaron Lewis: “I’ve Always Been Pigeonholed As Dark”

As the election looms and promises of change are rampant, an album called The Illusion of Progress may seem particularly cynical. Over several cigarettes and the remnants of a joint in a Manhattan office building, Staind frontman Aaron Lewis says his band’s sixth studio album’s title is a little more innocuous. “We were all standing around the counter, bullshitting, when we were supposed to be writing songs and getting work done,” he says. “[Producer] Johnny K. said something about it, and my reply was, ‘Yeah, it’s kind of like the illusion of progress.’”

Musically, the band has taken a few new steps on the record, which was released this week. “The Corner” features the first outside collaboration on a Staind record, in the form of a six-piece gospel choir, something Lewis envisioned from the moment he came up with the song. “From its conception, I could always hear it,” he says. “One of the things I was lucky enough to be given in life is I can hear a whole song in my head before it’s finished. I can sing and I can write a song. That’s about all I was given naturally in this world. Maybe that’s what I’m supposed to do.”

The Illusion of Progress was recorded in and around Springfield, Massachusetts, the town the band calls home thanks to its central location (none of the bandmembers resides there). Lewis recorded his tracks at his barn on his property in the mountains, avoiding the sketchy area around the band’s rehearsal space (while guitarist Mike Mushok was recording one day, a corpse was hauled out of the building across the street).

Despite the bizarre environment in which it was born, the album is ironically the most optimistic Staind record to date. With his head where it currently is — mostly concerned with bringing up his three young daughters — Lewis agrees that he’s coming from a different place now, and perhaps never inhabited the place he was always assumed to. “I’ve always been kind of pigeonholed into being dark and brooding and angry all the time, when that’s me one day out of a hundred,” he says. “In every song, there’s a twist or a turn or just one little phrase that changes everything that a lot of people don’t catch. Even in the early records, there’s always been that ever-so-slight presence of a glimmer of hope all the way through, and that glimmer has kind of grown. As we go from step to step to step, there’s more little twists and more signs of hope. Go figure.”

“Ive always been pigeonholed as dark” …..so I release a song called “The Coroner” to combat that misconception.

NEG | 8/21/2008, 11:35 am EST

I’ve always pigeonholed this guy as a tool.

Mike | 8/21/2008, 12:07 pm EST

That “The Coroner” post seems a little off. Granted it was based on a typo from RS. The correct title of the song is “THE CORNER”. Decent album overall, similar feel to the last few albums (everything since Dysfunction) but you can certainly hear more of the optimism shining through

Joe | 8/21/2008, 1:03 pm EST

The Corner, the Coroner, the Carnie…….still a tool.

Aaron Lewis | 8/21/2008, 1:51 pm EST

I’ve always been cornholed.

b | 8/21/2008, 2:19 pm EST

YAWN!

guitar_davey | 8/21/2008, 2:21 pm EST

I’ve always simply pigeonholed this band as a perfect example of shitty, derivative “modern rock.”

These guys sucked when they were doing the “brooding” alt-rock thing in the late nineties and they’ll still suck with their “gospel choir” and their “optimism.”

Whatever sells you a few more records, hey guys?!

Sour about it all | 8/21/2008, 3:33 pm EST

Sweet. I could really use something to perk me up and I was thinking the other day how much a Staind record would make me whole again.

P.S Love the ‘D’ at the end of the name. Super coolh.

Jeff | 8/21/2008, 4:33 pm EST

Aaron Lewis has always been pigeonholed as dark because he’s a miserable onstage.

I’ll never forget seeing him at a KROQ Christmas show in 2001. He just walked around moping, clutching his chest, no “Merry Christmas, thanks for coming out!”, nothing.

Good singer, terrible performer, deserves to be pigeonholed.

Jeff | 8/21/2008, 4:35 pm EST

P.S.

Is that a brown staind in my shorts?

G!NA | 8/21/2008, 5:36 pm EST

I have never seen someone so boring on stage before….go home Staind….and don’t come back.

dmo8768 | 8/21/2008, 7:46 pm EST

He even made the “Beetlejuice” song from the Howard Stern Show sound depressing. I loved it, though.

l2thak | 8/21/2008, 8:11 pm EST

The Illusion of my butt

Erwin | 8/22/2008, 8:47 am EST

It amazes me that all these people who think that Staind as well as Aaron Lewis are so terrible actually took the time to read an article about a band they don’t even like just so they could post some mean comment to help them feel better about their miserable little lives. I mean it would make since that he was such a terrible performer (and yes I have seen them live, twice)if he wasn’t a millionaire for performing. So before you go ragging on him cause he didn’t tell you merry christmas, how about you get up on stage and try to do what he does everynight.

chris | 8/22/2008, 10:21 am EST

aaron lewis is about as cool as babies with cancer.

HEF | 8/22/2008, 10:36 am EST

Erwin,
A four paragraph article isn’t difficult to read for people that aren’t you.

Just becuase he’s a millionaire doesn’t mean he’s talented. You probably think his lyrics are poetry.

Everynight is not a word…

annoymous | 8/22/2008, 11:56 am EST

if everynight is not a word then why the hell did you type it as one. If your gonna correct ol dudes grammar at least don’t use the same word, its a blog for god’s sake . . . and I don’t even take the time to read one paragraph articles about bands I don’t like . . . sorry

Jeff | 8/22/2008, 12:10 pm EST

uh, HEF, lyrics ARE poetry, poetry set to music to be exact. Maybe you need to bone up on your musical history. And you should at least be able to appreciate Staind for the music, you don’t see Erwin making fun of you for your love of Panic at the Disco and Fallout Boy

AmericanMale | 8/22/2008, 5:13 pm EST

Aw Quit yer whining! (Even though it made you famous) RS why must you expose us to this nonsense?

Livetdth5 | 8/22/2008, 8:31 pm EST

I think the new album is great, “Believe” will be hit as well as “All I want”

I have seen them 3 times,- Lowell MA, Boston, MA and Comcast Center in Mansfield MA and they were GREAT EVERY TIME- GREAT performance EVERY time- not sure what the hell you people are talking about. 14 Shades of Grey and Chapter V BOTH debuted #1 on the Billboard charts – nuff said

ben starr from delmar | 8/22/2008, 8:51 pm EST

the only staind record that’s any good is “break the cycle”. i doubt this new album is any good. dont get me wrong aaron is a great writer and a great vocalist but if the band isnt there staind is second rate nickelback. and nickelback isnt even that good!

ben starr from delmar | 8/22/2008, 8:55 pm EST

and just cuz an album debuts at #1 doesnt mean it’s good. miley cyrus debuted at #1 last month! also i dont pigeonhole aaron as dark. i pigeonhole staind as a run of the mill alternative band.

adam | 8/22/2008, 9:55 pm EST

they are o.k….nuff said

keep up the Good Work from | 8/22/2008, 11:06 pm EST

Keep up the Good work, from kristmor another Staind fan.
People who try and say Negative
things are jeolous. Its work to stay and work together as a band. The Grass really in NEVER Greener on the other side. Remember what you wished for before you became famous. Now that you are, keep up the good work. See you closer when I get famous too,
until then, all my love to you!

Avacado | 8/26/2008, 1:31 pm EST

At least the band is growing and changing and Aaron’s voice never sounded better. The Corner is great as is Tangled Up In You. Hey! they are’t doing the the “same ole stuff’ like most groups who NEVER change like Three Doors Down and Nickelback.

rob | 8/27/2008, 6:29 pm EST

Why do people hate on staind so much? They are a great band that has’nt and will not be going anywhere soon. First of all I’ve seen staind about 12 times live and they’re never bad with that said I like them alot better in a smaller venue they sound alot stronger. I’m sorry but if you’re a band isn’t the point to make money doing what you do best and loving it don’t be envious because they can do it better than you and all your friends garage bands who will never make it enjoy the bar scene boys. Enjoy them for what they are a good rock band who is still here after a decade and doesn’t look like they’re slowing down.

Thunder God | 9/2/2008, 7:56 pm EST

Some of these negative comments left on here are written by no talent tossers. Such as Jeff, who commented on the brown ’staind’ in his shorts. He forgot to it was mixed with blood. From when hi mother strapped on her plastic & gave to him from behind. P.S Jeff, sorry that Santa didn’t appear on stage & wish you merry Xmas… You wanker…

Holly B (fan) | 9/5/2008, 9:27 pm EST

Staind is awesome. All Aaron needs to do on stage is open that beautiful mouth of his and sing with me. Those immature haters looking for more need to go to a magic show if they want tricks. 3DD surfed the crowd when I saw them with Staind last month and that was the coolest so don’t hate on them. It’s always cool when an artist does an interview because you learn more about the people you’d love to have in your life. So if you’re going to leave a comment leave your jealousy elsewhere. It only shows your ugliness.

jill | 9/12/2008, 6:10 pm EST

i don’t know when when a tool became a bad term… if it wasn’t for tools we wouldn’t have a single illusion of progress…

troubled about life | 10/24/2008, 1:38 pm EST

Jmac | 12/29/2008, 3:47 am EST

A.lewis is dat dude

Kate | 12/30/2008, 10:26 pm EST

Aaron Lewis’ lyrics ARE poetry. If you can’t wrap your mind around them, then you’re probably a sheltered little _____ whose biggest problem is trying to type a grammatically correct comment on a message board.

Chuck | 1/23/2009, 1:30 am EST

you know a lot of people think of aaron lewis and say “just stop whining already” but a lot of artest spend a lifetime talking about depressing shit i know his lyrics have helped me through a lot of shit. i’ve been so close to the edge so many times and his songs are like therapy. i know that sounds a little shallow thinking “this song changed my life”. but i have had those moments. i wish i could make songs for half the stuff i have seen and dealt with into poetry like his songs are. so i have to say thank you staind and thank you aaron lewis for writing your music. If music is the fruit of the soul then play on.

troubled about life | 1/24/2009, 5:16 pm EST

i no how you feel chuck cause i feel the same way

Tone | 4/3/2009, 9:11 am EST

like him or not if u like his music thats all that matters. i l ike his music and thats all that matters to me,always have probably always will

Ste | 9/16/2009, 7:00 pm EST

I think we all know that Staind are a Marmite band… You either love them or hate them. I personally hold them as my all time favourite group, not just for the music, but for the messages behind the songs and the truth Aaron Lewis speaks about his past experiences. If you don’t like it, fair enough, but before you come on here and make out that you’re some sort of an intellectual elite, don’t forget that Staind have sold over 15 million records worldwide. Thats not something that happens over night. It takes years of dedication and a great level of talent for writing songs. And anyone with an IQ of 30 or above knows there is a big difference between opinion and fact..

Go Figure…
