Metallica’s New Single “The Day That Never Comes”: First Review

8/21/08, 2:58 pm EST

Photo: Vasquez/Getty

After premiering a new song from Death Magnetic called “Cyanide” during their Ozzfest set, today Metallica.com posted a trashcan-fidelity stream of “The Day That Never Comes,” the official first single from the album. The eight-minute song opens with a half-tempo groove before upping the pace near the five-minute mark, and is punctuated by lead guitar that is more about quick stabs than full-on soloing. Call it “The Unforgiven” meets “Bleeding Me” with a dash of “Am I Evil?” thrown in for the faster section, and don’t think too hard when James Hetfield reminds us that “love is a four-letter word.”

weak crap. its not that good compared to all of their other creatively awesome metal songs. quite boring actually.

Brian | 8/21/2008, 3:52 pm EST

The biggest complaint I have are James’ vox. Why must he insist on that high-register crap that makes this material sound weaker? Luckily Kirk still knows his shit. He’s the saving grace. Not great. But way better than St. Anger.

Anonymous | 8/21/2008, 4:01 pm EST

I dig it. The fast part near the end is great.

Pork Chop | 8/21/2008, 4:03 pm EST

C’mon, the friggin Jonas Brothers are heavier than that.

Mike | 8/21/2008, 4:25 pm EST

Sounds like they’re back to there old selves.

This is supposed to be the softest song on the record, sounds like One on …And Justice For All,
can’t wait to hear the rest.

I think James voice sounds great compared to load/ reload, he put the growl back in it.

Steve | 8/21/2008, 4:52 pm EST

Awful. The end sounds like a bunch of riffs they had no home for, ‘We’re supposed to be more like ‘Justice’ so let’s pretend that we are.’ The first part sounds like a Staind rewrite of Fade To Black or Unforgiven.

JUST DROP THE NEW STUFF AND BECOME THE STONES ALREADY.

Sean | 8/21/2008, 5:32 pm EST

I think they did it better 20 years ago when this was called “One”…

Jody | 8/21/2008, 5:49 pm EST

Love it! And I love you Metallica!

metalmullisha | 8/21/2008, 5:51 pm EST

well personally from me being a tallica fan for years now i think that james voice after all his goofy ended addictions and them tuning the guitars so funky has really downgraded the performance of this heavy trio after all alot of people didn’t know this but james didn’t only drink i think he smoked cocaine and all that crap he did really downgraded them and lars is a bag with plenty of money with little passion anymore for music this song is’nt as heavy or even as good as one’ or any of the other hits they had in my mind it’s a plush attempt to more money.

Olgasm | 8/21/2008, 6:06 pm EST

Are you sure James isn’t singing “song is a four-letter word?” This is about 3 minutes too long and sounds like a medley of riffs from their mid-career. They’ve gone all “collective soul” and sprinkled good riffs among a field of cow pies.

AMP | 8/21/2008, 6:09 pm EST

Metallica will never be the “Old Metallica” that we want them to be. Either you support them or you don’t! I think the new single is pretty good compared to Load, Re-Load and St. Anger. Hopefully the new album will kick some ass.

sebasbraz | 8/21/2008, 6:23 pm EST

Finally, better than st-anger and most of the songs on load, reload, kill, and lightning.
Just on first listening it even sounds better than some songs on black, justice and master.
I give 7.5. Could change in time, up or down.

Hans | 8/21/2008, 6:35 pm EST

Holy cow, who would have thought.. I agree with Steve: the end sounds like a bunch of leftover riffs. 25+ years in ‘the business’ of which about 3 were spent on this album and THIS is what is supposed to be the teaser? I had expected a bit more evolution and development. The riffs sound like they could have been killing had they been the first metal songs ever recorded… but they are not and that to me describes this song perfectly. Sounds like a band trying to revive the essence of what was going on 20 years ago. Making a point that may have been valid back then, but time doesn’t stop. Not even for gods of metal.

Motorbreath Mike | 8/21/2008, 6:39 pm EST

I like the new song, but i have to agree that it sounds like a bunch of cool riffs stuck together at times. I certainly hope this is a slow introduction to something much more volatile.

Sheesh | 8/21/2008, 6:48 pm EST

Almost nailed it. Great, beautiful, pre-Black Album riffs in there with great production.

But Rick Rubin’s cheap-sound of late eeks through. The drums sound too high in the mix, lack the epicness.

Vocals have been the biggest weaknesss of Rubin’s latest productions, and this is no exception. Still sounds like Hetfield (who has been losing his voice over the years anyways) is singing right in your ear, which doesn’t jive well in metal songs.

Should’ve added some more reverb to the drums and pushed them back in the mix. Equally, Rubin should have tried to bring some “Master” out of Hetfield, upping his pitch and tracking/dubbing the vocals a little more, as they lack in the power and energy that Metallica’s recordings had in the 80s – which is clearly what the production was going for.

3.5/5

will | 8/21/2008, 6:54 pm EST

WOW..i love metallica and alway have..these guys got me into metal years ago and thank god for that but seriously…is this whats left in the tank? crap!

DLOC | 8/21/2008, 7:00 pm EST

its really funny reading amateurs trying to sound like you know what your talking about…the song sounds good for what it is….leave it at that

greg | 8/21/2008, 7:02 pm EST

The riffs brought me back to the 80s this song has 3 main problems

1.The drums are to high in the mix
2.Hetfield’s vox sould have be overdubbed to get a epic feel
3. Rick Rubin to me come have done a better job with the group

I like this song its way better then st anger and load and reload but if i were to place this album it would be between the black album and load not master and justice

4/5

Sagepithet | 8/21/2008, 7:08 pm EST

While still great musicians, their music has no real direction. It was Cliff that tied it all together with his orchestral background that made for the great songwriting. I don’t think any of them ever really understood what it was that tied everything together that made them great. Ever since Puppets you can hear that influence fade away as you get deeper into their career, and this is what’s left. Sad, but true.

riprap | 8/21/2008, 7:12 pm EST

Have to agree on previous comments:
- drums suck!
- vocals suck!
- what a fucking piecemeal of old riffs put in a row.
Well, better than st.shit and will definitely be jamming on this when it hits the radio. Lets see what rest of the songs turn out to be….

floytes | 8/21/2008, 7:22 pm EST

i heard some thin lizzy also …

not bad, but with metallica we have to know that they have become the metal jurassic-park…

trivium, mastodon e.t.c ,nowadays sounds more fresh and energetic

havent they learn some new scales?

they are rich-family people, dont fight anymore … its like a hobby

Scott | 8/21/2008, 7:59 pm EST

I am so sick of people who think that their opinion matters! It’s Metallica! If you don’t have to listen to it, and say well I think it’s crap. shut the F*%k up! good hell, These guys are great! and I have loved everything they have put out for 25 Years! Oh and by the way it’s way better than ANYTHING out now, all the new bands wish they could be The Mighty Metallica!!!

James | 8/21/2008, 8:26 pm EST

Jesus how can people judge the album from 1 or 2 songs?

I think its a fantastic song, sounds really great to me!

I’m 20 and have all the albums and any cd they have put out, and it makes me think of … and justice for all, which is my fave album.

really glad metallica sound really great again, just like their old stuff =)

i aint gonna babble shit about stuff i dont know, but i do know that this is sounding really great to me so far!

got my copy pre-ordred =)

cashpiles | 8/21/2008, 9:12 pm EST

What a Load of crap. They sound like amateurs throwing together riffs that don’t go anywhere and don’t do anything. And the drumming? Holy fuck. God awful.

truthbetold | 8/21/2008, 9:34 pm EST

I’m so sick and tired of people who are still so butt-hurt about cliff dying. Yes it was tragic, but eat one. You didn’t even know the guy. Metallica has moved on, because that is what sane people do. Musicians continually want to evolve their styles and techniques, perhaps you who complain should evolve as well. If you want to listen to MOP for the rest of your lives and base your musical love on a handful of songs (though great songs)then enjoy living in mediocrity and primitiveness.

Brian | 8/21/2008, 10:49 pm EST

Always a big fan, can’t wait to hear the rest of it. I wonder if people will stop trying to find new ways to complain about this album and just enjoy it. Nah, that won’t happen.

cpaxlvacy | 8/21/2008, 11:30 pm EST

Good music, bad production, terrible vocals…

pulling teeth | 8/21/2008, 11:41 pm EST

I like the new song. I also like cyanide. To me, these two songs alone are better than most of the black album, all of load, all of reload, and st. anger. People forget that Metallica sold out with the Black Album, which I still believe is there most commercial album. I still have to hear the rest of this album to come up a definite answer if it is totally better than the black album. But with a third installment of the unforgiven, probably not.

Ryan | 8/21/2008, 11:51 pm EST

Damn I’m upset…I figured this would be the song to tell everybody to shut the fuck up. It’s pretty original and the first real Metallica song in ages.

I figured, but hell, it’ll never be Master of Puppets. It’s like modernized-Metallica. Very thrash-y and has some great riffs, the 4:00 harmonization is great. Hetfield’s vocals are a bit weak, but he’s still got the snarls and growls, which makes me happy, because it’s not his fault is voice isn’t there.

It could be worse. He could sound like Billy Corgan.

Anonymous | 8/21/2008, 11:55 pm EST

This shit rocks! Stop your complaining, jesus christ! This is there best stuff since the black album, its awesome, don’t try to critique it fools! it sounds great.

dolemite | 8/22/2008, 12:59 am EST

i think the review was on about the unforgiven but it sounds alot like slow section of “to live is to die” rather then bleeding me and am i evil?

Why does rolling stone throw out critiques with out any justifications? This SOUNDS like Metallica not like that crap that came from St. Anger which if i am not mistaken this magazine gave 4 stars even though it was a total POS. Stick with politics because this magazine is getting very egotisticall towards all music that is not from “mumbles” other wise on as 50 pennies

Me | 8/22/2008, 1:07 am EST

What the hell is everyones fuckin’ problem? The is BY FAR the best shit they’ve done since the BLACK album!!

James growl and “Yeeaaahhh” are back… which gives me the chills…

Load, Re-load and St. Anger had none of the “clean cut” metal feeling that TDTNC has… stop trying to break down every fucking note! Gimme a break..

MetallicA for fucking life

chad | 8/22/2008, 2:04 am EST

most of you dumb fucks dont know a god damn thing. the ones downing metallica are fucking idiots. this song is fucking great. i like the style their playing. i like how they evolved since st. anger and im fucking thankful their back and bringing back some good old metallica guitar playing. which most metal bands lack these days. if you dont like it suck it! if you love it tell these whiny wanna be metallica fans to get on their knees.

woolie93 | 8/22/2008, 2:40 am EST

After it kicks in, it actually kicks some decent old-school ass. Maybe they should just delete all of teh crap before the metal takes over after the 4:00 mark.

Smiley_Hangman | 8/22/2008, 3:31 am EST

Overall is an interesting song, i may check the new album out of curiosity.
Ok some riffs shouldn’t be there and the ending part could be better, Kirk does what he knows best but I’ve expected more from him than repeating an old pattern. The “maiden” guitars fail to remind me even a bit of “Justise” but they sure fit pretty good in the song. It seems that Metallica spend a little more time creating this song , than the whole st anger and thats hopefull…
PS: Metallica wrote more beautiful and interesting songs in the Load/Reload (both Great albums) period than this one, and of course you have to really listen to them than counting the times James says “yeah” or lars hits double bass or trying to calculate how much money they will earn from each song…Wtf..what are you 12 year olds???

Olgasm | 8/22/2008, 3:50 am EST

OK, the third time through this track it started to sound more cohesive. Still a mash-up, though, and the lyrics are a bit st.angerish. I don’t think James voice is shot, I’ve heard some of their recent live stuff from LiveMetallica.com and he sounds great. He also sounds awesome on Remember Tomorrow (from the Maiden tribute) and on live version of Cyanide, both on their myspace.

I’m starting to think the vocal prob on this track is either the inferior bitrate of the sample on their site, or a shoddy mix.

sir snaz | 8/22/2008, 4:41 am EST

I am truly upset, ..have been a tallica fan since I bought ride the lightening at the tender age of 12, and have grown up with them …they got me through those awkward teenage years and beyond…goes without saying that ‘puppets’ is their best offering ….but I pretty much got what they were trying to do with every album (barr st. poo….but that seemed to me just to be a vehicle for that comedy movie they made ;-) )…now this …..mmmm….there are some truly great riffs here ….but, as has been said already, it sounds like they listened to some old demo tapes (from ‘87 – ‘92 by the sounds of it) and threw together the best bits……and thats the problem …..this song just dosen’t hang together correctly, there just dosent seem to be any direction to it.
It is also hampered by poor production (come on Mr Rubin, must do better!!) and drumming that Mr Ulrich should be ashamed of!!
I just hope to god that this is a ‘loss leader’ and that the album is truly great and makes me eat my words….

Jonah | 8/22/2008, 5:13 am EST

This song and Cyanide are far superior to anything Metallica has released with St. Anger, Load, and Re-Load. Is it Master of Puppets or And Justice For All quality? No. But for a band of old timers who can still kick out some decent thrash metal, these songs are encouraging signs for Death Magnetic.

Greenhell667 | 8/22/2008, 5:28 am EST

sit back, relax, its gonna take awhile, but, (you may not like this) BUT, as far as metallica goes, they seem to be 1 album too far ahead of the other bands of the day, as soon as metallica drops a “new” or “re-made” song, the locale bands adapt that to there sound, (imitations is the highest form of flattery).

And as soon as that becomes a local favorite, the “up and coming bands” gain a new beat or sound or rhythm, so what? that’s how innovation goes, DEAL WITH IT. don’t hate it that a band you cant stand influenced a group you love!

they just might make it to a national leavel.

So, what is with all the haters?

Question, have you heard the new tracks?

if so, lemme know, if not, well, try to wait, then hate.

Lemme know AFTER the album hits a store shelf before you trash it with wasted words on a site that a fan will find with a simple google search.

just relax, it will be here, (they are normal people, and they want to make a profit with a talent, or lack of that, a hater would call it)when the creators of the music deem that they are willing to let there work go to public scrutiny.

thats my 2 cents….

the new album will be here when the band says so (and i will judge as soon as i can drive long enough too reach to end of the last track before i make a “hate” or “love” comment.)

true | 8/22/2008, 6:18 am EST

COME ON METALLICA!!
i just can’t fuckin wait for that album to come out n this song is tremendous!

Duggin | 8/22/2008, 6:44 am EST

Whilst listening to this, a smile came onto my lips and my head started moving – these are good signs, very good signs. Welcome back guys, its been a long wait. This track is EXCELLENT

James Stalker | 8/22/2008, 7:17 am EST

The day that never comes is decent but not great in my opinion. It has some decent riffs but is nothing special. I read an article that said it was like one’s weak sidekick and I have to say I agree. I don’t like Cyanide what so ever it doesn’t seem to have a direction and the parts don’t seem to fit. Let’s hope the overall album is great though.

Giray | 8/22/2008, 7:21 am EST

Well, everybody got it…mutual consent..
the fast part’s row of cheezy riffs (even I heard a kids song out there in the riffs) made this beautifully long waited day a bit miserable. but what can we do? we have to love it, because all of us are connected to these guys in the heart. We will love it.. no other choice…

Luís Campos | 8/22/2008, 7:49 am EST

I think it’s a really good song man…ok I see..the drums shoul’ve been more worked. Nevertheless I think it’s a good sign: Metallica is back!!

blisterbeatle | 8/22/2008, 8:08 am EST

First song should have been a blaster like battery or even sandman. This semi ballad might be stellar but still it’s an anti climax. I didn’t get no satisfaction.

José Pinto | 8/22/2008, 8:19 am EST

I can’t stop listening to this song. The lyrics are deep so is the music, it made feel very young again… and alive!
“Love is a four letter word… and never spoken here” really reminds me of a love-hate relation between father and son…
And the ending is even more insane than Fade to Black, man these guys are back… and they’re great!

Amos Moses | 8/22/2008, 8:29 am EST

Holy shit that was awful. There I was expecting some sort of faint return to form… Oh well, there’s always Chinese Democracy to look forward too!

Brian | 8/22/2008, 8:57 am EST

You have to remember, most of the “kids/clowns” making posts here were raised on N’Sync and Britney Spears. They wouldn’t know good music if it smashed them upside the head. I’m liking the new song. Can’t wait to hear the rest of the album.

Blake | 8/22/2008, 9:13 am EST

Fascinating how geared up people get and how quick some here are to psycho-analyze others… Get over yourselves and just enjoy the damn track…it is a great song from a great group with a great big bunch of idiot ‘followers’ who think they know all there is to know about everything Metallica. Don’t like the song…who fucking cares…don’t buy the cd. It’s as easy as that. *stumbles off of his soapbox….*

Chris | 8/22/2008, 9:25 am EST

Not good, not bad…it’s just kinda there. Not making an impact on me in the least.

doshtoronto | 8/22/2008, 9:29 am EST

The song is pretty cool, can’t re-create the good old days but this as close as it gets. This is the first release, wait until you hear the rest of the album before you crusify them, come on people. Master was the best and will always be the best, but it sounds like a step back to the days where we all fell in love with the best freakin metal band in the world. Go Metallica.. as long as you keep putting out music we’ll all keep listening, some people just don’t get it and you know who you are…

MattC | 8/22/2008, 9:43 am EST

I can’t stop listening to this song… it has been stuck in my head. Love it in everywhere.

Mitch | 8/22/2008, 9:45 am EST

Another badly-written Rolling Stone review which gives little information, little critique, and absolutely no justification for what they do say.

A horrible review of a great song.

frankie | 8/22/2008, 10:12 am EST

Mr Rubin lock those fuckers in a basement with a caes of jack danials. And dont let them out untill the start soundind like the pissed off hardcore fuckers they used to be.Fuck therapy, alcohol is your friend, anger is your mistress.

bprose | 8/22/2008, 10:28 am EST

The drums sound really sloppy… I’m not diggin them. I think this song is just another song on another Metallica CD. It’s a huge step up from St. Anger (TICK TICK TICK TOCK). The band is in their twilight, and this song doesn’t help the situation.

Once you get halfway through, it definitely picks up, but it just seems tossed together mostly.

Metal | 8/22/2008, 10:33 am EST

man i really want to get into this new album, but from hearing Cyanide and this new track i am completely dissapointed…I love Metallica but they are trying to hard to sound like they did 20 years ago…this songs sounds like One but 20 years later! The leaked demos from Axl and Chinese Democracy sound better than this finished product, at least Axl has the balls to try something new and different…I will buy and support the album because i am a fan, but this just isnt that great…James vocals are boring!

Brian M | 8/22/2008, 11:09 am EST

Ok, now this getting fucking out of hand. The only part of this song i dont like, is that its too riffy, doesnt have an structure but you can fucking tell what there going for. stop bagging them unless you can make something better. like fuck. the song has the essence of the old and a feeling of the new. i didnt really like the beginning of it but after a while it became good. like there fucking try there hardest and all you can do is bag them. you havent even heard the rest of the album. i think it sound pretty damn good.

Pfff | 8/22/2008, 11:13 am EST

Some of you have ridiculously high and unrealistic expectations if the back half of this song does nothing for you. Most of the people who look for any reason to ride and dog Metallica though, probably weren’t even alive when the 80s ended. If you think they can ever capture that same lightning in a bottle that was there well over 20 years ago, hey, guess what, you’re a moron.

It’s closer, BY FAR, to Justice and Puppets than anything else they’ve done since those two albums. These riff transitions could have been polished a bit more, sounds a little like Load-y ballad first half with a pre-Black back half slapped on but after St Anger’s jumbled collection of muddy crap? Please, this is a VAST improvement in every single way, and standing alone it sounds quite fucking good.

Don’t get the criticism re the vocals either, he sounds better here than he has in a long, long… LONG fucking time.

SLAPPY | 8/22/2008, 11:47 am EST

This ain’t bad at all…ending does sound slightly forced, though.
“Cyanide” is quite good as well. BUT ANYONE WHO REFERS TO THIS BAND AS “‘TALLICA” NEEDS TO PISS OFF!!!

Brian | 8/22/2008, 11:55 am EST

It’s not Master
It’s not Justice
It’s not the Black Album
It’s the new album!!
It’s new stuff that they are doing now.
It’s Raw , and thats good.
The first time I heard it,
I was like OH NO, what the hell was that.
After listing 5 or more times,It kicks ass.
Its new ,different,and raw
At first I does sound like the end is just thrown in but the more you hear it, it does blend
And is just an all out jam.

sanitarium-1 | 8/22/2008, 12:37 pm EST

personally i think its genius in comparison to most other bands out there.

Anonymous | 8/22/2008, 12:45 pm EST

I think its awesome..I think Metallica are realizing that they still have thier old diehard fans and that they should bring it back to them… I would read the blurb aboive, but that god damn KIA ad keeps popping up.. TAKE IT DOWN RS!

WOW | 8/22/2008, 12:51 pm EST

please, please, please AXL release Chinese Democracy this year or else I have nothing to look forward to! That being said, this new Metallica is way better than anything they have done since the Black Album, but still isnt saying much

O | 8/22/2008, 12:57 pm EST

Fan since ‘83 here – yeah I’m old but grew up with these guys and have seen them too many times to count. Just hear me out….

First, once Cliff died a BIG part of the Metallica sound and style died as well. Cliff had a lot more influence than people realize plus he was James’ BFF and Metallica really wasn’t Metallica until Cliff joined the band. Kill ‘Em All no doubt has some great songs but it also has a lot of weak songs as well (pre-Cliff). Lighting and Master were released within 2-years of one another (unheard of for Metallica) and those two albums had Cliff’s influence all over them and are argueably musical blueprints for today’s metal. Of course you can add the Justice album as well. A large part of that album was conceived and written before Cliff’s death.

Second, largely because of this they’re never going to BE ABLE to make another Lighting, Master, and Justice album even if they tried. Death Magnetic sounds like their very first attempt to rekindle that past sound since Cliff died. I also understand that some people will never like their “post-Cliff” sound but that really isn’t a valid reason to bash a legendary band.

The music direction and style of this album kinda reminds me of the Black album where at first listen you’re not sure if you like what you hear because it’s different, mainly because it lacks Cliff’s musical influence, but over time it sounds better and better. It’s kind of like seeing a new model of your favorite car that you initially don’t like but the more you see of it the more you like it then after a while you love it.

I feel you can simply hear and feel a lot more passion and intensity just in that first song – something that IMO has been missing for a long time.

I think this album will be much more appreciated weeks and months after it’s been released.

Megatron1 | 8/22/2008, 1:01 pm EST

I thought it sounds good. It’s obivously not their best work but its 10 times better than anything on St.Anger….Maybe I’m buggin, but I heard a little of “And Justice for All” sound in Kirks soloing in the song towards the end. I liked how the song started slow and kept building up. Overall a good solid song from Metallica!

Brad | 8/22/2008, 1:07 pm EST

Did Lars even try to think of doing a decent drum part. My god that last part of the song goes on forever because he plays the same thing through the whole unorganized outro section. Ever heard of complimenting the soloist?

Klaus | 8/22/2008, 1:16 pm EST

Been a fan since the release of Puppets. To cut it short, I like the song, but not the mix… Whats wrong with drums? Ok. no trash can sound but instead Lars’ drums sound like cheap 200$ drums. Being a metal drummer myself, I grew up with Lars’ playing as my main influence… Especially his use of double bass drums within the song structure… But it’s been almost twenty years since he did it the last time on an album… Amputate that left leg mr. Ulrich, if you’re not going to use it anyway. And practice goddammit.. You owe it to the fans.. Rest of band kicks ass on this new shit.

King Slender | 8/22/2008, 1:57 pm EST

This song is weak. It sounds like more of the same from St. Anger, the worst album ever made by humans.

I want to ride the lightning again!

Mattallica | 8/22/2008, 2:02 pm EST

OOOHHHHHH YEEEEAAHH! Hetfield, I want to have a sex change and have your child!

Paultay | 8/22/2008, 2:08 pm EST

Saying this song sounds like “St. Anger” may be the dumbest comment I’ve read during my internet career. Are you kidding me?

This song is brilliant. It’s easily the best song they’ve created since the Black Album, which is 17 years ago! Is it flawless (the standard everyone holds Metallica to)? No, I can’t say that.

But it’s the best I could’ve hoped for after St. Anger. I had no expectations for them or this album, and because of that I’m delightfully surpised that their talent has resurfaced…I hope the rest of the album is not only as good but better. Cyanide is another good track.

Needless to say, I’m definitely looking forward to 9/12.

Cheers

King Slender | 8/22/2008, 2:28 pm EST

Yes, this song is weak. People get so emotional when they hear bad stuff about their band. Get over it.
The drums are lame, Hetfield sounds bored out of his mind.
Hey, I didn’t make the song.

Anonymous | 8/22/2008, 2:47 pm EST

just listen to the production the Black album has, the drums the guitars, the vocals are superb, the power those songs have, this song sounds like a demo, James need more reverb and overdub..AXL RELEASE CHINESE DEMOCRACY NOW PLEASEEEEEEEEE……

O,

Great post and perspective on early Metallica days. I’ve been as much of a Suicidal Tendencies fan as I have Metallica, and was very excited when they welcomed former ST bassist Robert Trujillo into the mix.

St. Anger was done before he joined, so I’ve been hoping that on this album they’d mesh with a bit of his influence as a great bass player. I remember when Suicidal dropped “Lights, Camera, Revolution”, pretty sure the first album with Trujillo, and the band turned the page quite well with him. The sound went more metal than hardcore, but that booming bass was a big addition to the sound.

As good as he is, Trujillo will never be able to have the influence on this band that Cliff did, but that doesn’t mean they can’t use that talent to hopefully put more of a charge into the sound.

just listen to the production the Black album has, the drums the guitars, the vocals are superb, the power those songs have, this song sounds like a demo, James need more reverb and overdub..Axl release Chinese Democracy now pleaseeeeeeeeee….

Roy | 8/22/2008, 3:02 pm EST

That sounded AWESOME!!!!! I’m buying my first Metallica album soon….and it’ll be Death Magnetic!!!!! Fuck the thick-headed oldskool fans……here comes a new fan!!!!!!!!

avril lavignes ass | 8/22/2008, 3:38 pm EST

its hard 2 decide wot i think of the track.

at first listen it sounds like a shit version of one with the shit drums of st anger and a forced ending. the singing isnt 2 gr8 with watered down lyrics. long gone are the days of ana all out assault such as battery.

however

after multiple listenings it does grow on u. wot i can say is that it does piss all over st anger. in addition since ‘one’ raised the bar so high, even a shit version is good by todays standards. an eary post said throw out the 1st 4 minutes and listen from there. although tough, it does have some truth 2 it.

a new metallica single will always be judged harshly a theyve set such high standards in the past.

i must say after all that, that it is an enjoyable listen. after cyanide i wasnt 2 sure but after hearing this i may actually purchase the album. plus its great having solos back. a mixture of and justice 4 all and load reload id say.

in the mean time ive had slipknots psychosocial and disturbeds in the fire to bideme over. both gr8 singles. staind new single is crap just as the rest of disturbeds new album.

as a man of varied taste im still waiting 4 a decet album of music this year. nine inch nails latest although free was bloated and average. coldplays newest effort was abysmal. im feeling like i did a couple of years back when the only good release that year was audioslaves revelations.

i cannot wait til this emo movement ends , its shitting all over rock. i even preferred limp bizkit to the likes of my chemical romance.

neway- ive had my 2 cents

Phantommy | 8/22/2008, 3:58 pm EST

Every one who is now giving critics that metallica is trying to sound like 20 years ago and that its bad is a stupid fuckin hypocrit who doesn’t know what music he likes.
Everyone is begging metallica to sound like that and then they bring out this song wich is close to it.
I like the song and can’t wait much longer to hear the full album.

Metallica: Never stop, never Quit

TraH | 8/22/2008, 4:11 pm EST

I think the new ‘Tallica single is great and the new sound bites of the new album on the Metallica site are VERY promising that Death Magnetic is gonna kick anus!!

As far as comparing the new album to previous albums, it’s too soon to say, but I don’t think it will ever measure up to Puppets and Lightning, those albums are in a league all by themselves!!

Lastly, St. Anger was a pile of shit, but Load and Reload weren’t bad at all. I don’t know why people keep shitting all over them!? Can’t wait for the new stuff though!!

King Nothing | 8/22/2008, 5:08 pm EST

Funny to read some people’s comments here.

Let me ask you, if you were a musician, how would you feel if you play for 20 years, and released 9 albums, but they all sound the same? Like 95% of all Metal bands.. Must be boring huh?

Metallica allready made master of puppets, justice, lighting… Why would they make it again? Who will tell them to make it again?

The day that never comes and Cyanide are both great songs, you hear influences from their first releases, but not more then that.

Crappy production? Yeah right.. c’mon guys, you’ll have to come up with better stuff then that..

Either way, September 12, is the day to review their new release, not today

Whateveryoufnwish | 8/22/2008, 6:48 pm EST

Listen you guys are al being morons. James has taken singing lessons since the old days so naturaly he is going to put more effort into his voice. Second of all its like this any of the bands that have been around as long change OZZY and even Megadeth. The older you get the more things change. I think its great I can’t wait to hear the rest of there album. The rest that are knocking it just can’t over the past and move on.

Old School Metallica Fan | 8/22/2008, 7:21 pm EST

One word for the new track!!!
“Disappointing” Metallica made us wait 5 years for this Load of Crap?
I was expecting something better. Something will BALLS!!! Might as well call this new track Unforgiven III. Someone raise Cliff from the Dead, cus I miss that sound!!!

Wow | 8/22/2008, 8:12 pm EST

Was a huge fan. Was excited when I heard there was a new single. After hearing it, then deleting it, decided that it must be identity fraud. Played it for my friend and honest to God he thought it was a new Duran Duran single. That is not an exaggeration. VERY disappointed.

Merciless | 8/22/2008, 8:38 pm EST

Play on Tallica. Play on. Fan here since 88 and (with the exception of St Anger) I have enjoyed all Metallica releases. We need to stop thinking of the past and connect with what is now. The song is pretty good. The mix may not be the best in the world but it still rocks. I will admit that I was a bit like “huh” after the first play on the radio. I got home and listened to it again on tallica.com (yes i’m doing tallica on purpose) and it began to grow on me. I jsut bought it on itunes and I am jamming to it as we speak. These guys set a bar when the black album came out with mixing and set a bar as icons with Master of Puppets and Ride the Lighting. Who can top that? This song and hopefully album will be great. Cant wait to see them on the road. Show some respect to the Four Horsemen. If you think you can trash it, then you must be able to make a better song or album right?……right??
Long Live Metallica’s true fans and the day has finally come.

Henry | 8/22/2008, 9:17 pm EST

Hey, not bad! This song reminds me of Justice and the Black album. While St. Anger was raw and primal, this is definitely Metallica going back to the old days (i.e., Justice and Black). Now I’m going to listen to “Cyanide”!

dcyphor | 8/22/2008, 9:39 pm EST

Verdict:
I like it. full stop.

You dont? well, whatever. thats your problem. stink for you huh?

RobInAL | 8/22/2008, 10:25 pm EST

I’ve always admired Metallica because of their “Fuck You!” attitude towards everything. Do you think they give a shit if you love them or hate them? Of course not. That’s the attitude that made me fall in love with the band in the first place. If that was you too, then you’ve forgotten something, my friend. You goddamn pussies that have been bitching ever since Load because they didn’t sound like they did in ‘86, need to grow the fuck up. I’ve changed since ‘86, why haven’t you? If you refuse to grow up, just become an AC/DC or Motley Crue fan. Every new Metallica album I listen to is first, “hmm…I’m not sure if I like this” because I’ve listened to their other shit until my ears bleed. Then the more I listen, the more I like, and I realize that deep-down, they’ve still managed to maintain the superb level of musicianship that they always have. Try to look past the solos, the lyrics, and the drums, and just listen. Remember why you fell in love with the band in the first place. With that being said, Metallica will always be #1 to me, and this new single just further convinces me of that.

Up Yours | 8/22/2008, 11:26 pm EST

Not as good as Cyanide, but still solid. Let me tell ya, I have high hopes for this album. Cyanide is probably the best song since Enter Sandman. Remember, Metallica is about creating memorable songs, not just about being heavy without purpose.

REAL Metallica fan | 8/23/2008, 12:33 am EST

This is total crap. Absolutely garbage! Some of you losers actually like this song??? LOL!!!

This is easily the worst song they’ve written, which automatically makes it the worst metal song ever written. It’s over. Pack it in, you old losers. LOL! James sucks. Lars sucks. Kirk sucks. The new guy REALLY sucks! Dave Mustaine and Kerry King could crap a better song than this pile!

I new seven seconds in that the song was terrible. Ok, that was a lie. I knew months ago! LOL!

Remember: REAL Metallica fans HATE Metallica! If you actually like them now, you’re just a fake wannabe poser! You’re not a real fan if you don’t wait foaming-at-the-mouth for a new song to come out just so you can immediately say that it sucks! LOL!!!!!!!

Puppetz | 8/23/2008, 12:44 am EST

Metallica is the best band in the world. The two songs out are awesome. To the people who say they suck for the past 12 years since Load: FUCK YOU! Please tell me you haven’t changed as you’ve gotten older. I cant wait to get the new record and see them here in Detroit. And to the dude who said his freind thought it was Duran Duran has he heard either band? Didn’t think so. Tallica rocks!

fratis | 8/23/2008, 1:42 am EST

the new song is great….the mix is average but who knows this may only be a tease for the real thing…watching and listening to the clips on the platinum site the actual album songs sound heaps cleaning and harder…..metallica fan or not its a cool song and honestly move out of the eighties some of you…Metallica have changed but i bet your haircuts haven’t.

steve | 8/23/2008, 2:59 am EST

This song is bad fuckin ass!! i love metallica and hope they have a couple more albums left in the tank!! and people.. please stop trying to place the ALBUM with other albums this is the FIRST SINGLE the album dont ocme out till september 12th.. that is all.. long live the gods of metal

thatguyfromthatbandcoldplay | 8/23/2008, 3:55 am EST

Im oldschool Metallica but along the years ive changed, i love this song, really looking forward to the new cd but im getting the vinyal.
If people dont like it then check out AMON AMARTHS new song, amazing band.

If you find clipping in Mets new song, your not wrong, the single was mastered at such a high rate its producing clipping which WB are aware of and are fixing at the moment.

Riffer | 8/23/2008, 5:14 am EST

Ok…had about all i can take….IF Y’all can do better, pick up instruments and some paper, and get crackin! Call someone like Rick Ruben, see if he gives you the time of day with your 4 track garage demo. People like you critics are the same guys that boo n hiss your fav quarterback when he gets sacked, altho under the same circumstances most of you would cry for mommy. Put you on a stage like Metallica is used to and watch the wet-spot grow larger and larger on the ripped up tight ankle-cut jeans you bought in 83…. SIMPLE AS THIS…..IF YOU DONT LIKE IT FUCK OFF AND LEAVE US ALONE THAT DO LIKE IT!

Zman | 8/23/2008, 5:17 am EST

Fan since ‘84. The reason that Metallica is as big as they are is that they are one of the few bands that dominated both the underground AND the pop charts. They have street cred AND pop sensibility. Those two worlds will always be at war.

I like the new single, but there is a lot of bluesy residue from the load stuff, that just seems out of place.

The Metallica of old was ALWAYS interesting, love it or hate it. Some of this new stuff, like Cyanide, is just blah. It’s not something I see showing my pals and saying “listen to this…this is crazy!”

Regardless, this album will probably be their best “post-black album” effort, and I think, and hope, that they continue improving.

One more album and they may find their NEW voice.

Jack | 8/23/2008, 5:20 am EST

Really, it’s so sad that Metallica still has to listen to all of this crap!!

This single is some of the best Metallica in a long time…

And then you go bashing them…again, and again.

There is no artistic satisfaction in creating the Master #2, or a Ride #2.

Death Magnetic is gonna be KILLER! This is a more down-tempo song – and is easy to compare with One, Unforgiven and Fade to black as a base.

And for one.. I liked St. Anger… it showed a band with a lot of problems getting out – and for that time it made sense.

This single has Metallica all over the place.

Cyanide.. UHH ROB! That bass part is so right there in the POCKET!!

BOW DOWN, !!

Ampson11 | 8/23/2008, 5:28 am EST

I’ve been listening to Metallica since I got a copy of Justice in ‘88 and had everything I thought I knew or liked about music turned upside down. That album ripped my face off and I was a die hard Metallica junkie for the next 5 yrs. My interest faded around ‘94 or so, as new music came into my life. But I’ve always still had an interest in the band as they had such a huge impact on me when I was younger. And the thing that I think throws off so much of their new material is that while once they were pissed off, alcoholic maniacs who were the same people on stage as they were off, they have now reached a point that they are “trying to be Metallica”. And it ain’t happening.

The reason everything up through Justice and even somewhat the Black Album holds up so well is that it is HONEST MUSIC. It is immediate, visceral, free of pretense and only exists for you to listen to, enjoy, and marvel at, and it will always hold up and stand the test of time. When you hear those early albums, you are hearing the sound of a cohesive unit that it is all on the same page, that has as its only goal to create crushing, epic music and to take over the world. It was the sound of a true rock’n'roll gang. Now you have the sound of a group of 40 yr old dads trying to recapture the sound of being 20 yr old maniacs. They have become a “musical act” where once they were nothing more than a bunch of dirtbags with a dream. I don’t know if all that makes any sense, but when I hear these new tracks it just sounds like Metallica trying to do what Metallica is supposed to do instead of creating honest artistic expression the way their early music did. It just seems like the well has run dry for these guys creating that kind of aggro metal they started out with and it kind of sucks listening to them try to recapture it.

And TDTNC is just a bunch of riffs strung together. There is basically no song arrangement to speak of. Its just really not very good.

L-P | 8/23/2008, 7:03 am EST

Hey!
Dudes who think Metallica should come out with Ride the lightning II, I have a message for ya;
GO CUT YOUR MULLET!
This song is awesome!

luke | 8/23/2008, 9:43 am EST

It’s 10x better than St. wanker.
I don’t like the sound of James voice in the “this I swear” part, but overall it’s pretty good.
I think it’s the best song they’ve written in 15 years.
But it’s certainly not better than justice, puppets, lightning, black album.

Motorbreath Mike | 8/23/2008, 11:06 am EST

The more I listen to the new song the more I really enjoy it. No, its not justice, or puppets, but its also not anger or either load. Its new, and good… Sounds like they remembered how to have fun again

Kost4179 | 8/23/2008, 2:23 pm EST

I’ve read all of you, but i just can’t stop headbanging with this shit over and over again

Metalhead15 | 8/23/2008, 2:56 pm EST

Whats so pathetic are all these Metallica haters who claim to only like them pre-black album. They hate on this band and they show a complete lack of musical taste and knowledge by doing so.

To the author of this review:Go back to your Jonas Bros. cd. You obviously are like every other Metallica hating schmuck out there. The new song is good because it again is different. Everyone needs to stop comparing it to things of the past.

Talha | 8/23/2008, 3:09 pm EST

It is a fantastic single. Overall it sounds loud, authoritative, melodious. Just compare it to the rest of the stuff thats floating around (Linkin Park, anyone?)

I fail to see how ANYONE can complain!

dyers eve | 8/23/2008, 5:11 pm EST

this song sucks.
this band has sucked since before the black album.
i thought they were finally going to return to metal with rick ruban but even he has been producing watered down radio friendly garbage for the past 10 years almost.
it sucks that the band that tought me to raise hell with “kill em all” “ride the lightning” master of puppets” and eve”…justice…” have diluted themselves to a rock cliche of pure shitin more recent years. i guess the past is really gone and garbage remains

dyers eve | 8/23/2008, 5:23 pm EST

i just read some of the reviews below me. what you people dont understand is that there is pride in metal. these guys dont even get along anymore they are doing this all for the money which is not what its all about or at least it wasnt when metal had a meaning. when it was against the grain. when it was evil and offensive. the way it should be. i understand they are older now and its not 1986 and cliff is gone and puppets could never be again but they HAVE to know that is what REAL fans crave..just a taste of the aggression of DAMAGE INC. and such. since 1988 i have been looking forward to that new Metallica album that would blow my mind yet again. it never cam. instead of mind bending fast picking and the james hetfield growl of battery we get the watered down lazily written boring blusey riffs and this ne wvoice he found on black that sounds more like bob seger than the james that chanted “metal up your ass” from the stage when we all pumped our fist in fury along with him. they should hang it up. the parties over people. its been over. i understand you like it …and thats fine…but this isn’t Metallica…this is something else. it saddens me. R.I.P. Cliff we still miss you even 22 years later. never the same without you. “…fuck you puss, fag slut.” Cliff Burton 1986

Phil | 8/23/2008, 5:54 pm EST

I Hear Alot Of ‘To Live Is To Die’ in this Song more than anything!

Ed | 8/23/2008, 7:23 pm EST

I’ve loved metallica sine the Ifirst head them in the 80’s! I was a bit dissappointed with the 2 loads and St anger (I did like S&M however). Anyway, this first track from the new LP really reminds me of old Metallica. I like the track (especially the last 3 mins of it). I just hope te rest of the cd is as good or better!

To all those passing such quick judgement, wait until the CD is released and keep the faith man!

matelaca | 8/23/2008, 7:37 pm EST

Bands evolve.. They change.. They are older.. we are older. How many bands sound the same 25 years on?. This is the best track from METALLICA in 10 years. It isnt gunna be kill, Ride, Puppets or Justice. It cant be. But its awesome.

Johnny boy | 8/23/2008, 9:07 pm EST

I don’t listen to anybody who was born after Metallica released The Black Album, which would mean 99% of the gimps on here. You all need to put your dicks back in your trousers and get some fresh air. Kids, I fucking hate ‘em.

One Killer Song!!!!!!

VOID | 8/24/2008, 12:39 am EST

I totally agree with the poster who says this song bears similarities to “To Live is to Die.” The first section of the song uses the same guitar tone and same basic structure. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, because TLITD is possibly the most epic Metallica song ever.

HIM | 8/24/2008, 12:52 am EST

The song rocks, the band has always rocked, and I’m sick and tired of wannabe “metal fans” bashing Metallica. Most of the new shit out today sucks! Learn your music than speak your mind fuckers!

MadSwissChinese | 8/24/2008, 5:14 am EST

I’ve seen Metallica live 1992 when the black-one just came out- it mowed my old-dick brain flat!!! Unfortunately I’m still waiting since then for something comparable from Metallica…sorry but everything after the black-one suckes!!!

Paul Grav | 8/24/2008, 5:37 am EST

I bought the song from iTunes. I mostly like it, however there is plenty to criticise:

- It sounds like crap. There is so much distortion and clipping that it’s virtually unlistenable. Check out 2:20 onwards. It is the worst sounding piece of music that I have ever purchased. Not sure how I can get a refund. I’m holding off buying the album until I have confirmation that Death Magnetic doesn’t have the production quality of Californication.
- There is no flow to this song. The slow part is good, and lyrically ok. The fast part (post 3:50) is lyrically embarrassing, “love is a four letter word”, “this I swear” and “I suffer this no longer”. The song follows a similar structure to One and Welcome Home, but unlike those songs the fast part bears no resemblance to the slow part. So it’s quite jarring when the slow part ends and the fast part begins. It feels like they wrote the slow part (pre-3:50) and the fast part years apart, as if the slow part was something that they had written during the Load/Reload years and the fast part something that they wrote more recently.
- The drums are too loud and too boring. They’re interesting until 3:50, then completely boring afterwards.

The good points:
- Overall the song isn’t as boring as some of the songs on St. Anger. Verses aren’t repeated unnecessarily.
- Nice to hear some really great bass. IMO the best since MOP.

Dimebag | 8/24/2008, 6:32 am EST

I love the fist part of the song. Every time I listen to it it somehow feels better and better, but man… WHAT THE FUCK IS SECOND PART OT THE SONG ABOUT??? I literally have no idea.

As Ampson11 said:
There is basically no song arrangement to speak of. Its just really not very good.

Wes | 8/24/2008, 6:55 am EST

This is great! Their best stuff in 15 years! They’ve still got it at 45 years. James doesn’t sound as good as he used to but after St Anger this is such a relief. While it isn’t near their best, it’s certainly now better than ANYTHING out at the moment (or the last 10 years for that matter).

Fade to Wack | 8/24/2008, 7:34 am EST

Instead of the old days when we were all like, “did you hear that new metallica song? wow!”… To Now, we all say, “well it was better than the last”….that is just horrible and that’s when you know the band is done. R.I.P metallica. However I’m Glad Hammet is playing solos again, wait! – isnt that why metallica got him in the first place? Metallica has no idea who they are anymore – listen to slayer they know.

Eko | 8/24/2008, 8:15 am EST

Metalica Still Rolling, but not as scary as pre-90, but rolls. Enough for this 30ish fan :)

preblkalbmfoamingatthemouthfan | 8/24/2008, 10:53 am EST

Look, for those of you who are like myself, be glad we have Metallica’s first 4 albums and Gar.Days. They were magical and always will be. I couldn’t wait to get out of class every day in high school, pop in kill, ride, and puppets and drive speeding and headbanging. And then justice came out, wow. Amazing that I didn’t have a wreck. ALL I listened to for years was Metallica. For the original fans, it started going downhill with the black album -remember listening with anticipation for the next song to be fast and furious and being disappointed because you got to the end of the album and realized this was a rock album not the insane metal album you expected. After hearing some clips of Death Mag, it may be better than the previous 4 albums but that isn’t saying much. Play the albums that YOU love and burn the rest.
P.S. I still want my 17 fucking dollars back for St. Anger. I am still madly in anger with Metallica and I am waiting for somebody to tell me that that was just a joke and we will all get a refund. Guess that will be TDTNC!

I rememeber my first encounter with Metallica was sometime in the 90s. The song was I Disapear from the MI2 soundtrack. I just started listening to the old stuff. Its all good brothers. The new song is kind of out of order and basicly thrown together, but listen to Kill em’all everyones favorite album, come on guys those songs are trashy and “thrash!” They have evolved and please tell me you dont get tired of listening to screeech!! and over the top grind and punk and whatnot. Those albums had Misfits written all over em’. Thats who Metallica wanted to be. They are not angry kids anymore. How could they possibly create that pissed off music once again. Come on! Really focus on it all. My favorite albums would have to be #1.Master of Puppets#2.Ride#3Black#4Load. ALl you haters tell me you dont like Hero of the day. Tell me you dont enjoy listening to Wherever I may roam. The truth is you do! You have to love those songs as well as TDTNC come on! I’m buying that album are you! Dont be a fool and miss out on what will be great. Damn people! Really enough of all your Metallica will never be and Metallica this and that. They will never be, because they are now. Its the present for honest sake.

Angelitto | 8/24/2008, 5:32 pm EST

In the second verse, James sings “God I’ll make them pay” in his old, aggressive voice and it sounds GREAT – now why on earth didn’t he sing the whole song like that? fucking singing lessons are you kiddin me?

That said I still LOVE EM

Sig | 8/24/2008, 5:57 pm EST

Love the new stuff. I’m just being a fan of the best band out there (for me anyway).

It started out being introduced to …And Justice For All during college on my drives home from the dorm with a friend. Blackened sealed the deal for me and converted all of my friends from Van Halen.

And I really don’t get some of these posts. I LOVE the St. Anger album. Powerful, unique, and smashing. Listen all the time for sport training – St. Anger, Frantic, Unnamed Feeling, Some Kind of Monster.

I appreciate the entire evolution of Metallica.

I’m ready to buy the new album, with a look at all the song/band rotations out there now (most of which do not appeal to me or my demographic I suppose), this is refreshing!

im torn.growing up with metallica since i was young.discovering and justice for all when it came out absolutely hooked me.i became a fan and never looked back.the first five albums where some of the best albums wrote in metal history.and garage days rerevisited.imo.it took awhile for me to adjust to load and reload but i grew to love them also.sorry but st.anger i dont consider an album.more like a bad experiment, bob rock ran his course.as far as the new stuff goes i am definitely going to buy it.i like it alot from what ive heard cyanide and tdtnc.the only major complaint i have about the evolving process of metallica over the years is this.i really miss the lyrics of yester year.it seems to me that hetfield isnt taking the reigns like he used to.the lyrics dont seem as dynamic and story like, like they once where.still buying it though.because i know for a fact its going to be good and not st.anger

Best Metallica in years.. All the newer metal bands that are making a name for themselves all grew up listening to classic Metallica.. I think Met knew it was time to bring back the metal and prove…. So good to hear bass too. RT is the man….. and now that they have spent so much time in the studio- maybe they can finally go back and remix …And Justice For All. Everyone knows there is virtually NO bass guitar on that album….

ranch111 | 8/24/2008, 8:20 pm EST

Umm ,yeah. I’m laughing at all the people who’s first encounter with Metallica was in the 90’s. I sat in a 1000 seat theater on the Ride the Lightning tour and played air guitar and banged my head. The guy sitting next to me thought I was out of my mind. Anyway, they had this bass player back then named Cliff Burton. Totally rippin’. Real headbangers didn’t snicker at long, drawn out, well written solos. Metallica was not just another band, they were God (notice the past tense in this sentence). They peeled the paint off the walls and got you laid. You cruised around in your ‘73 Malibu four-door POS with Pioneer 4-way speakers in back and 2-ways up front cranked. You blew your ears out with your Pioneer car stereo and EQ/booster. So kiddies, try not to confuse metal and hard rock. The Metallica you have chosen to worship is the latter.

Warden | 8/25/2008, 3:12 am EST

I really don’t understand why Hetfield “tries” to sing… he can grunt growl and scream with the best of them which is what he does best but he just can’t plain sing.. the vocals in this song are just embarrasing, lets hope the rest of the album is better.

tyran | 8/25/2008, 7:02 am EST

I think it’s great. I like the way the song structure goes with short lines following each other. The melodics are nice and the end is banging. My only small complaint is probably in the blend of the two halves… the ‘this I swear’ thing. Not like the blend that is one which is perfect in my opinion.

Ok, its not the hardcore that I hoped for but remembering that this is the radio single and is the slowest if the album I can’t wait to hear more.

I do wish James would just bark out the lyrics in anger like he used to rather than sing them.. Justice style.

But lets be fair, they are still around and we’re still listening to them!! Metal up your asses!!

FijianMetalHead | 8/25/2008, 7:07 am EST

This is the best music Metallica have put out in a long time.Great tempo changes, and a cool solo.Metallica still rocks!!!

Jack S. | 8/25/2008, 7:27 am EST

I have not enjoyed a new Metallica song since And Justice For All. At first listen to this new one, I almost regretted even clicking on the link. But something compelled me to listen a second time. I am glad I did. The song is so progressive that it was difficult to enjoy it, at first. But now I have listened to it a half dozen times and I am really liking it. This is the first Metallica song in 20 years that I am excited about. Hopefully, the rest of the album is even better.

Dub | 8/25/2008, 10:32 am EST

A lot of people are complaining about Het’s voice. People should realize he suffered a major vocal injury two-three years ago, and hasnt been the same since. Having gone through one myself, he’s probably been instructed to either ditch the screaming or lose your voice altogether. So the question you have to ask yourself is, is Het singing better than no Het at all?

Weak | 8/25/2008, 11:18 am EST

ugh…heard this self-indulgent song on the radio over the weekend.

Lars – learn some new beats. please.

hettfield and hammett – hummmm…still playing riffs like some kind of guitar hero eh? sounds like something off the black album – riffs initially like enter sandman – basic note playing skill that sounds like a 5th grader (hettfield) just picked up a guitar two months ago and is trying to impress his GF

Wait, don’t forget, the master of going up and down the frets like Zuiphar, master of the gratiutous guitar heros! – someone should tell Kirk to get a life. So he can move his fingers fast – who cares? it sounds terrible. less is more?

So – in guitars, you either have to hear hetttfield learning how to play, with his stupid lyrics or KIRK playing way too much.

maybe if no one buys this album they will go away.

Mike B | 8/25/2008, 12:26 pm EST

Ok….First off people need to chill out bashing Metallica! I mean what do you want from them?! The new single is great! I love it! Some imperfections maybe with the drumming or the singing in some peoples eyes but I think its solid! Remember when St Anger came out? You bashers said you wanted Solo. This has it! You want Melody. This has it! You wanted substance. This has it! So I ask you bashers what else do you want?! Long live Metallica cant wait for the Album!!!!

dexter deegan | 8/25/2008, 11:24 pm EST

Metallica are officially finished. Gave them chance after the ‘Black’ album, and they gave us ‘Load’ (’Re-load’) doesn’t really count because it was recorded the same time as ‘Load’, gave them another chance with ‘St Anger’ because it was touted as their ” comeback” album back to their roots…what a piece of shit that was — so being a band that once was my favorite (back in the 80’s) I said I’d give em one more chance and this is what they deliver – f you Metallica that solo at the end doesn’t make up for a crappy first half of the song — upon hearing this I can safely say “I hope the day never comes” when Death Magnetic is to be released

danielle | 8/26/2008, 12:39 am EST

i don’t get why so many people are complaining.. i thought it was awesome

Kdog | 8/26/2008, 12:46 am EST

this song rocks. i’ll touch on a few comments i saw that i found to be particularly idiotic. This is not an attempt to recreate fade to black or one. its a new song. the vocals are fine for a guy who suffered a vocal cord injury and has been singing for almost 30 years. And people saying this is soft and not hardcore enough, this is a ballad. Relax. youve got nine heavier songs comin with the release of death magnetic.

Ampson11 | 8/26/2008, 1:11 am EST

OK. For anyone who has posted in this thread or who is about to read what other people have written so far, If you have any negative opinion about TDTNC or if its maybe just so-so to you, do yourself a favor and go to Metallica.com as soon as possible and stream the new song “My Apocalyspe” and then notice as your opinion changes from being iffy to knowing 100% that you will be buying Death Magnetic the day it comes out. Anyone wondering if the Metallica death/kill vibe is still a part of the band will be happy to know it shows up in spades on My Apocalypse; this track is shit hot. None of the sketchy arrangements like on Cyanide or TDTNC, just 5 minutes of ripping, bad-ass, shredding guitar riffs. This shit is bad ass.

what happened to metallica the THRASH metal band…this song is only remotely thrashy

Simon Hay Esq. | 8/26/2008, 9:06 am EST

Why is everyone making such a huuuuge deal out of metallica’s like…. 41st single? Its not very good. They havnt gone back to their old roots. That is an impossibility, and overly sentimental, don’t you think? Great band but man, Ricky Rubin did a not so good job here. You guys know they have tried to use a more basic recording method to make this single sound ‘younger’ and its just sounds ‘weak’…. People Metallica aint 20 no more, they are never going to be.. They need to stop trying to write music people will like and just do it…St anger….was bad, not letting him write lyrics so its all off the cuff and exciting….when i grow up i wanna be in a overly controled situation like that..
Anyway, to all of you who enjoyed the single, go on enjoying it, thats great. But judge not with blind faith, just because their old albums were AMAZING!. The rest of us know the truth however..
I’ll leave it unspoken..

Fantastic song. Much better then anything else I’ve heard of DM so far. My only complaint is that second half didnt really transition well from the first half naturally.

In all honesty all you ‘old timer’ fans…they could have release master of puppets and you would still bag it out.

O | 8/26/2008, 11:55 am EST

“Boo hoo! This doesn’t sound the same as Master and Lighting – they suck!”

What a bunch of crap. First, Metallica are the victims of their own success and standards. That’s a pretty good problem to have if you ask me.

Let’s put this into perspective. These guys are in their 40’s for god’s sake!

In a nut-shell this was me when Master came out…16-years old, cruisin in a old Chevelle, bullet-proof, killer mullet, screwing (just about)anything with a pulse, playing football, and not a freakin’ care in the world.

In a nut-shell this is me today… married (to a lovely wife) with kids, cruisin in an SUV, paying on a big mortgage, marital sex (still not bad), saving for college tuition, playing weekend golf, and way too many cares and responsibilities.

I’m not complaining – just making a point.

Do you think there’s just a SLIGHT chance that Metallica have changed a little since the mid-80’s? Do you think getting older and having a family might have changed their perspective and music just a little bit?

No way, they just suck right?

Get some perspective IDIOTS!

Harry Peratesties | 8/26/2008, 5:10 pm EST

Man this shit is weak. I’ve been a Metallica fan since ‘83 and I’m ready to toss out their old stuff at this point.
I think the Jonas Brothers are more technically sound these days than what Metallica has become. My God..

Ted Rock | 8/26/2008, 5:24 pm EST

Oh ranch111, you are so cool because you are older and knew Metallica before some of us. I’m sure your balls smell that much worse being older though.

Anon | 8/26/2008, 6:58 pm EST

Screw the fanboys and the naysayers. This is a great song, in addition to the other album cuts they have posted on their web site/myspace pages.

Not too mention, any educated Metallica fan will realize the diverse tempo changes and James’ return to singing a proper key as opposed to the Bob Rock keep it flat method.

Hubert | 8/26/2008, 7:31 pm EST

Hey, guess what people? There will never be another “Master Of Puppets”. Just like U2 will never have another “War”, Pearl Jam will never have another “Vs.”, Nine Inch Nails will never have another “The Downward Spiral”, and so on and so forth… Judge the song on its own merits. Are you the same person you were 20 years ago? Exactly…

O | 8/26/2008, 8:26 pm EST

Any Met haters heard My Apocalypse yet?

So let me ask you morons a question?

SHUT UP!

Andrew | 8/26/2008, 11:23 pm EST

Hey Weak…didn’t you post the same comment on another website under the name Joey Z?

Man, you are original!

Tell you what Metallica Bashers….scroll up to near the top and read the post by “O”. One of the most well-put, concise, to-the-point, insightful comments that sums up a hugley successful band that has continued to evolve over the past 27 years.

I really don’t get why you morons who want to put down every single thing these guys release keep listening? If you hate this band so much, or think they “can’t cut it” or “have lost the edge” or “”, go and find something you do like and enjoy that.

shawn | 8/26/2008, 11:51 pm EST

My god. I have been around heavy music for a long time. I have never understood who you people are that try and debate metallicas ride the lightning vs today’s sound. They had some very ground breaking stuff…but the inventors have influenced so many other countless bands…it would be impossoble for them to have the same impact. I play guitar and do it pretty well…but I’m damn well not gonna rip these guys as musicians and players. Where are your albums? where are your singles you complaining no-life whiners!! If you are so true…cut and album and show us what you would do after nearly 25 years of recording and touring. Please untie your mullets!! It’s 2008 and I think they are an amazing band….it’s so hard to do this as long as they have. Don’t let nostalgia for the past short you out of liking the present music…they still rock.

The rise and fall and rise and fall and rise of Metallica. Hey where the fuck is Bob Rock now? This doesnt sound like Rick Rubin produced it. I think its Bob in a Rubins mask.

Kris | 8/27/2008, 12:26 pm EST

Hot garbage. Download it off limewire just to spite them.

Joe Momma | 8/27/2008, 1:40 pm EST

This song sucks. They lost it a long time ago. Anyone who has seen Some Kind of Monster should understand that the same group of metal gods that put out Lightning and Puppets have turned into a bunch of whiny, narcissistic, passive-aggressive, self-absorbed douchebags. Such a group can’t help but suck. This sounds like a bad garage band trying to sound like Metallica. You fanboys who try to prop up this crap are the main reason Metallica ended up like this.

sEaN | 8/27/2008, 1:48 pm EST

First off, James has lost the edge to his writing over the last 15 years. His lyrics are becoming more Emo than Metal. This is to be expected as one ages and grows reflective. Second, his voice lessons have done nothing to help his singing. In fact, telling him he could ’sing’ was the worst thing the voice coach could tell him. James is a guy who yells melodically. Third, this single seems to be a mish-mash of styles from various Metallica songs. There’s no real hook to lead you into or through the song itself. Finally, the mid section up-tempo part is the only thing that even resembles Metallica. Keep in mind, I am not expecting another Kill, Ride, Master, or Justice. I just sense the fire has left the band when it comes to new creations. Make no mistake, they still are most bad-ass live and go through their catalog feverishly and excellently at almost every show. I just think the band is creatively drained. I do hope there are better songs on the album since I plan to buy it. I still respect these guys, but I think they just aren’t into it anymore.

metalovich | 8/27/2008, 2:15 pm EST

ya all morons. the new metallica shit rules. u people need to get your ear wax cleaned out. james is riffing like mad and kirk’s solos are off the hook. and it does sound vintage!!!

St. Anger | 8/27/2008, 3:26 pm EST

Metallica is now officially dead. I can’t wait to see some douche blaring their new stuff in their car so I can stare them down and laugh.
Metallica should tour with the Jonas Brothers, maybe open for them.

MetallicA Fan | 8/27/2008, 4:33 pm EST

The new stuff is amazing. Especially My Apocalypse. That song just rocks. I think you should really give it a good listen. Crank it up, let it rip…But MetallicA are no more the Kings of Metal….ahem, they are the Emperor Gods of Metal! Hands Down!

sleep walking | 8/27/2008, 10:51 pm EST

That is what i feel like there doing. james is still very talented, but what do i care MEGADETH was always better anyways.

lolwut? | 8/28/2008, 12:07 am EST

I cannot wait for the day that we don’t have to hear anything from these dueshbags anymore. They have been complete shit for over 15 years now, and they keep getting worse. If you like this shit chances are you are in your mid to late 30’s, work at a diner, live with your mother, and still have not gone back for your GED. Fuck you Metallica

Mike | 8/28/2008, 1:01 am EST

can’t believe the haters!

Huge sound!

Awesome guitar work!

Day that never comes is killer, deep lyrics, James singing what he wants. Lyrics on Apocalypse are way dark and that song is also killer.

The last 3 minutes of Day are pure speed baby, only artists with their abilities and vision can take you on a ride like that!

To all haters: let your brain take the backseat behind your face and enjoy the ride for once!

josh | 8/28/2008, 1:53 am EST

I cant believe the haters on here…i saw metallica at bonnaroo this year and have gained so much more respect for them. You people saying they suck obviously have no taste in music…THIS IS A BALLAD AND IS THE SOFTEST SONG ON THE ALBUM. It is safe to say metallica is back to their old selves.

Alan | 8/28/2008, 9:57 am EST

Unforgiven III? It was bad enough they made unforgiven II! And I dont give a #@%” if hes saying love is a four letter word, or fallen word or unheard word, etc…who cares, it sucks! They should have called it Bleeding Me II, or better yet Bleeding Your Wallets with Bullshit! These guys have been around a long time, are professional musicians and should know what the fans expect from them….uhh…not this crap!
Fire lars for starters….or someone please remind him he has two arms! He sounds like he’s playing with one arm and jerking off with the other daydreaming about how much money he’s going to make off kid’s who think metallica is still relevant in music today!
And hey Kirk, slow down and try to actually hit “between” the frets! Might as well slide a drumstick up and down the neck like Nigel Tuffnell!
Bottom line…..BORING UNCREATIVE LETHARGIC CRAP!!

soclosealady | 8/28/2008, 11:17 am EST

Metallica lost me when James started whining in all of there songs. I agree with all of you who feel that they are lost beyond all reason. Look at Slayer…80’s band, never lost their edge..and still kicking ass!! Fucking Slayer for life!!

Slayer Fan | 8/28/2008, 11:24 am EST

Cliff Burton is crying in heaven. Lars himself said that when he died, the heart of Metallica died.

pd | 8/28/2008, 12:32 pm EST

ive been listening to the song for a while now… im honestly tellin you i tried very very hard to like this song but… this song doesnt even feel rite… i mean its hard to comprehend for me im a die hard metallica fan all these years they gave us so so much they pushed the bar everytime but now they seem to have lost it…. maybe their heart wasnt in it…since they were taking so many “breaks from recording”!!!! this song is utter bull crap nd im talking about “the day…” as far as im concerned metallica is metallica because of people like u and me nd they shuld’ve had the cutesy to make a better single than to shove this garbage into our ears. sigh!

jordan | 8/28/2008, 12:57 pm EST

people who want metallica to write the same album over and over, which is what bands like slayer do, for whoever brought that up, are the real idiots.

i personally dig the song more everytime i hear it.

Hey Andrew - weak here! | 8/28/2008, 2:46 pm EST

I just spent almost an hour reading these comments, and some of you people are just pathetic. Personally I enjoy the song more and more each time I listen to it. Think about this. You walk into a bar and you see the four guys that make up this band sitting at a table having a drink. What are you going to do. Are any of you assholes gonna walk up to them and repeat any of the shit you wrote down here? Not a damn one of you will criticize them. Because as a fan you should have respect for these guys, they set the bar and raised it higher each time, inspiring the great metal bands of today to do what they did. They were a revolutionary part of metal history and 27 years after their first album they release this. 27 YEARS. Now theyve done some shit, and of course they enjoy getting money, but who doesnt. Just put the past aside and respect and enjoy the music they have now. This cd will rock. Some of you people are just sad.

zeebydy | 8/29/2008, 10:34 am EST

if you listen this stuff, the only explanation must be your respect to metallica memories.

Hey mangy | 8/29/2008, 11:04 am EST

yeah, actually, i would tell them they are not relevant anymore, if they asked for my opinion and their music is TIRED. I am not scared of metallica and i dont think anyone is. They are spoiled brats who make lousy music – proof is their some kind of monster dvd. maybe their therapist should have told them to retire.

maybe you should branch out a bit.

Andrew | 8/29/2008, 11:08 am EST

Hello…
I can’t believe that true Metallica fans do not like this song… If you don’t like this song then, your not a fan at all. Notice all the spelling and grammatical errors in the threads, those are either idiots or 3rd graders. I grew up on Metallica, they will never stop, they will never quit because they are the shit you fucking homos.

Now go listen to Saves the Day or My Chemical Romance.

Mangy Bum | 8/29/2008, 1:03 pm EST

Im just saying, You have to have respect for guys like them . They created heavy metal history. There is a big difference between the music you can consistently perform when you are 25 and when you are 50. You cant expect them to repeat the same albums over and over. Diversity has to come somewhere. Just stop whining. If you dont like it. Dont listen to it. No need to wrap your pathetic lives around it.

Jon | 8/29/2008, 2:02 pm EST

Great song. I liked it the instant I heard it and it continues to grow on me the more I listen to it. Yes, certain parts are very familiar to parts of other Metallica songs, but so fucking what? It sounds great. It works. ‘The day that never comes’ is a fucking great song.

this song back to black album,
i love it

Kj merrill D | 9/3/2008, 5:00 pm EST

Not a hater here, I just think a band that has been around as Long as Metallica can come up with something new that doesn’t sound like a song they already made twice (Unforgiven and Unforgiven 2 both of which are amazing pieces of Musical Storytelling). The blatant Unforgiven Riff makes it confusing and also dispells any intrest in the song, being something I’ve heard before. I know they have much more talent than this, I know they can do better, maybe this song is the result of Musical Writer’s block.

Mr. Defiance | 9/3/2008, 11:21 pm EST

This song kicks ass. Love Metallica and always will. They put thrash metal on the map and I hope they’ll be around for many years to come.

metallicablaaaaa | 9/4/2008, 3:52 am EST

Its funny to read how some people stick up for this band still. Bottom line, Lars is still terrible and Kirk has been playing the same 3-4 solo licks for the last 25 years.

One of the comments (Steve)sounds like a bunch of riffs they had no home for. Very Well Put!!

I also dig the guy that says the drums need reverb :(

New Metallica make me hate old Metallica. If your a fan from And Justice back, that band is dead. If your a fan of a bunch of guys that wanna look like Good Charlotte with their AARP card in their chain wallet this is for you.

metroarea4 | 9/4/2008, 10:09 am EST

If you like Metallica’s new song you are not a true old skool fan. You probably started to listen to them for the first time when you were wearing diapers when Black was released. I will call you the new age Metallica fans. Everything about their new single is HORRIBLE, vocals, guitar, DRUMS!! Lars sounds like he recorded his tracks in the bathroom closet. When Mettalica was young they were full of piss and vinegar. Now they are wealthy spoiled old men and don’t have any hard life experiences to write about that sound hard and heavy. They ought to throw in the towel before they embarrass themselves anymore. I am not just comparing them to Master of Puppets, but their entire collection before Black. It’s not even the same band.

Captain Falcon | 9/4/2008, 4:45 pm EST

Justice was the beginning of a new sludgier slower time change thing that warned us they were off track and lost. They’ve never regained form since. They also turned off most reverb/delay effects after Master, and just stopped shredding overall. The old school 80-86 metal we all love needs a touch of reverb/delay — not the colder/boxier sounds of ‘90 onward.

“The Day that Never Comes” is a GREAT song.
Other than the rising “this i swear” bridge in the middle” (which is corny/trite) to me like all their music since Justice…

This song is amazing. *****
I listened to the other 5 singles on their web site, and they are ok/good/corny. So yes, Rubin helped steer them back on track considerably. The clipping in the snare drum, I’ll never know why they allowed that… Then you go back and listen to Justice, and there’s snare clipping in that too, lol.

Metallica, I’ve been pissed off at your crap — you’ve literally given me nightmares for 22 years since Justice came out. (sorry folks it didn’t rock… it has 3-4 great songs, and the rest is filler).
And I’m glad you took a step forward from the last 4 horribly cheesball corny albums, but… give it one more shot. Maybe in 2011, you guys will (like SLAYER) stay true to your roots, and make one last SHREDDING album before you guys call it quits. You can do it, you have more talent than in 1986. Polished as hell. But that’s not what we want from you. We want the shred and outrage again.

PS: They are a great live act – just not sure they can write songs any more… Amazing talent, all 4 of them.

Been listening to the new album and quite possibly the best shit they have done since Justice. I am not saying it is good after a couple of listens and a couple of songs are absolute pish but some do jump out at you. Opening track That was just your life is not too bad at all and the song All Nightmare Long is a fantastic song that harks back to the glory days.

awsome album!! raw and real! we saw the transition frm kill em to and justice for all and i bet the next album will be another epic!

These songs were more thrash then metal, the speed they had was pretty good, it like “…justice for all album” and “Load album” put together

I’m glad to see there are so many discerning listeners out there. This song is quite possibly the biggest piece of juvenile, no-talent, sophomoric crap on the radio today. With so many bands that have talented, energetic singers with relevant lyrics, guitarists with actual thought behind their licks, and drummers that don’t just want beat the shit out of their drums, who needs this 8 minute piece of mindless drivvle? When I hear this on the radio, it makes me so aggravated I could punch a baby. Good thing they don’t play this in nurseries. The worst part is, I know these guys are talented musicians. Like a previous poster wrote, they just don’t have the edge anymore. Or maybe they just don’t have any reason to get mad and live through their music anymore. Metallica, take the money and run. Get the hell off the radio, go retire with your bazillions of dollars. BTW, I download your songs off file-sharing apps, just so I can have the pleasure of deleting them!

Look everyone face the facts, in some forms this record has some great thrash moments. No it is not quite what once was, but are any bands anymore. How many bands can write good consistent material time after time. Look at Slipknot there writing went down hill fast. Slayer createtivity was short and so on and so on. Yes they had some weak records but for this style no other metal band will ever last as long as they will now deal with it.For those of you that know it all where is your record deals, I am still looking for your records on the charts. My final point this band has composed enough good songs that puts them above most if not all metal bands so far in history. Slayer has stayed heavy, but after ther first few records, the rest have been pure junk as an ex.

Okay I’m getting annoyed at all these bashers on here, it’s a great song and it’s just as good as One or Fade To Black. And you might kill me for this but I have to say: St.Anger is an AWESOME SONG/ALBUM. So are the other albums/songs everyone else hates. I DON’T LISTEN TO SLAYER/MEGADETH, you know why? because I got bored of them after a while, they just scream, and have really fast solos. Metallica did the same thing exept they have different kinds of styles, they make ballads something Slayer couldn’t do. And that “trash can” drum on St.Anger is ALSO AWESOME. They make thier songs better than most other metal/rock bands. Metallica won’t make another Ride/Master/And Justice/Kill Em All, okay? just move on. And you guys learn to use correct spelling/grammar, if you can’t you’re to lazing to anything and are a douche/B*TCH.

Oh, and to the “real metallica fan”, we “losers” are not posers. You are most likely a nerd that has no life. You are also probably emo because everyone hates you. REAL Metallica fans are suppose to LIKE Metallica. You said real Metallica fans hate Metallica so made yourself look retarded.
