Teen Drops Out of High School To Become Professional “Guitar Hero”

8/19/08, 10:53 am EST

Call it The Decline of Western Civilization IV: Blake Peebles, a teenager in North Carolina, recently dropped out of high school to pursue his dream of playing music. While this sounds like an everyday occurrence, there is a catch: Peebles dropped out so he can concentrate on playing Guitar Hero with hopes of becoming good enough at hitting colored plastic buttons to play in the surprisingly-lucrative world of competitive gaming. Peebles has already won a few Hero tournaments, but so far his winnings include gift certificates, gaming equipment and 52 Chick-fil-A meals. For what it’s worth, Peebles was doing poorly to begin with in school, and his parents have since hired him a private tutor. If Peebles lives up to his high-flying Guitar Hero dreams, he could earn up to $80,000 a year on the competitive circuit, though groupies should be slightly harder to come by.

What a bonehead. How is his mastery at Guitar Hero going to land him a job or a career? Potential employers will see him as a slacker. He might as well learn to play a real guitar and become a musician earning bucks that way.

Livin’ the dream, baby, livin’ the dream…

This is just sad.

Putrid Sound | 8/19/2008, 2:08 pm EST

HAHAHAHA What a loser. Guitar Hero will be over with in a matter of years anyways. At least he gets an excuse to date high school chicks when he is 27. Dipshit

Munnklovn | 8/19/2008, 2:15 pm EST

God bless America.

This is puts forth a great argument supporting euthanasia. Dropping out of school for a video game. Come on. This kid should not be allowed in society.

Choopy | 8/19/2008, 4:19 pm EST

Peebles is da man! We should all have the balls to just drop out of life and play video games on a daily basis. If you have wealthy parents, then just grub off them. The dude’s got it made – no school, no work, stay at home, have fun and let mommy and daddy pay your bills and provide the food. That’s what I’m talkin about! Kick ass!

StratManKudzu | 8/19/2008, 11:49 pm EST

+1 on the euthanasia

bigred4417 | 8/20/2008, 9:29 am EST

Read the article, Blake is being homeschooled and makes straight A’s. I know they guy and he plays drums and keyboard and is awesome at GHIII, Halo, Gears of War and is making more money than me this summer playing video games. He said he may be taking gaming classes at NC State next year to learn how to make the games. Ya’l need to read the article – he’s probably smarter than most of the people posting. Rock on Blake!!!

Heather age 17 from Kentucky | 8/28/2008, 8:37 am EST

that is so stupid why would u drop out of school to play a dumb game like that my mom would never let me do that ur education is more important then guitar hero !!!!!!!!!

Lauren | 8/28/2008, 2:03 pm EST

Blake actually tested out of his high school classes and has private tutors. He plans on going to a local college and getting a degree in video game programming. He plays the drums and keyboard too. He has also been using the money he has won from contests to help his family.

If I were you I wouldn’t judge someone before you know the entire story.

LMAO | 9/3/2008, 10:04 am EST

This is truley amazing! I play GH3 all the time, and have thought about turning pro myself… I think its about time. Watch your back Blake, today I quit my job and start training to beat you!

Edgar | 9/9/2008, 8:42 am EST

Hopefully his brain will develop eventually, so he’ll get wise enough to get himself a real guitarr at least!

greeneyed kels | 9/16/2008, 10:08 am EST

dude! ok that is so fucking cool & weird! haha I’d say that I totally would do this..but ah I suck at guitar hero lol :]

dude... | 9/16/2008, 7:28 pm EST

epic jerkoffdom

Greg | 10/6/2008, 1:43 pm EST

1. The admission requirement I believe are too high for a home schooled, gome tutored person.

2. I could not find a degree program at NCSU in gaming.

StratslingerKane | 10/25/2008, 12:40 pm EST

Buy a real guitar and start a band… Videogames are a great hobby, but no one deserves to play competitively for a living of $80,000…that’s as bad as what athletes make, shows the general stupidity of the American public.

Some random guy | 12/10/2008, 12:03 am EST

This kid is truely a moron. After guitar hero gets old, what then? I personally would get a nice guitar for that much he’s making and learn how to play it as a backup when guitar hero dies. It wont die anytime soon but I will die at some point. Till then, rock on everyone!

stevo | 1/5/2009, 1:58 pm EST

dude i just saw Blake play 5 days ago and he is truly awesome. He can play expert on hyperspeed 5 and still get like 100%. I got his autograph too! I wish i knew him in real life lol. he’s amazing.

buttman 5000 | 3/27/2009, 12:52 am EST

well i mean if u go to school so you can eventually make what blake makes now i dont really see the point of school. I do agree that he shud learn to play the guitar because its a great skill and it fuckin rockz but overall I dont see anything wrong with him saying fuck school. every midterm and extra credit and career and job and dollar u have will mean nothing when ur dead so just find a passion and go with it

Tony Montana | 4/11/2009, 6:18 pm EST

What a Moron, Who gives a $hit how good he is, there is kids half his age that would play circles around him and yet they go to school every day, His parents should be punished for making a life changing foolish disision like that. Other sudents will do the same thing and will ruin there lifes as well and eventually there will be millions of kids wanting to play games for a living and not have to go to school. If kids could pick either Real School or Home School I bet you most would pick Home Schooling, But most parents just want there kids out of the house and choose for them to go to regular school, But soon this clown wont be the only idiot to be playing guitar hero for a living, other kids will follow just because if he Can then they can, and if they cant than they will complain and there will be a monster lawsuit over it all. But that doesnt even count out the fact that Guitar Hero is gonna be facing leagle problems with the real Bands over how People making Thousands just by playing there Music on a plastic with 5 button Guitar. So this kid is getting ahead of hisself if he thinks that one day he will be making big money on real bands expences, Guitar hero wont last long. so Like I said once this kid does this, soon other kids with better skill will follow either way, the kid just ruined his life with the help of his rich parents. His friends if he even has any will hate him over jeliousy.
So either way dont expect this Clown to go far. If he wants to make a living playing guitar, he should buy a real guitar and get lessons and try to become a real Guitar Hero if he is as good as he thinks he is instead of being an amature game player who will find out that he is just a guitarzero.
He is just lucky he has Wealthy parents. There are Teenagers that are more diserving than he is that cant do what he is doing just because they arent as wealthy. This is so pathetic it makes me sick. I cant believe that the Government hasnt said anything yet about this, expecially with the Economy crisis, Video games is a privlige, a game, Just goes to show why they Economy is heading in the dirrection that it is because of Idiots like that. So dont expect to go far kid or else your gonna be on the corner with your lil tin cup with your paper baged cover 40 oz’r saying that your life is shit.
God bless america, if thats what americas future looks like than America is doomed.

I X V X I V X V | 5/22/2009, 3:29 pm EST

lol this is funny… i play guitar hero all the time, its a fun game and i enjoy it, im pretty much a no life at it, all my friends say… i play on the hardest difficulty (expert) and there isnt a song i cant play. but i still go to school and make good grades, i mean really? its not that hard, just put homework and studying before games, then you have the rest of the time to play Guitar Hero all you want…

hah | 6/22/2009, 3:04 am EST

buttman 5000’s comment is a prime example of why this kid should stay in school

nematona | 8/26/2009, 6:17 am EST

i play real guitar and it is harder.Even harder than the hardest levvel!!. and when i started guitar hero i couldnt stop!its sooo addictive and i am STILL playing it now
but its what he wants to do so leave him off.
if the bad stuff happens then he got himself their

timidteen4 | 10/19/2009, 3:59 am EST

I think that guitar hero is a nice game, but it shouldn’t be played professionally. His parents should think about the ramifications of letting their son make a life altering decision like that. Giving kids what they want is nice, but they should be given what they need. He needs an education so that he has a backup plan in case this one backfires.
Even though he is making a rash decision he is still making one. Teens need to be more independent -not too independent- and be allowed to take part in important decisions.

CONGRATULATIONS blake
