It’s no secret Big & Rich’s John Rich is a McCain supporter, as he’s written an ode to the Republican presidential candidate entitled “Raising McCain.” Rich recently lumped Johnny Cash into the fan club, saying “I’m sure Johnny Cash would have been a John McCain supporter if he was still around” in an article than ran on CMT.com. Unfortunately for Rich, Rosanne Cash disagreed with Rich’s assumption, saying in a statement, “It is appalling to me that people still want to invoke my father’s name, five years after his death, to ascribe beliefs, ideals, values and loyalties to him that cannot possibly be determined and to try to further their own agendas by doing so. Even I would not presume to say publicly what I ‘know’ he thought or felt. This is especially dangerous in the case of political affiliation. It is unfair and presumptuous to use him to bolster any platform.” The moral of the story is maybe Rich should stick to turning Julio Iglesias Jr. into a Nashville star rather than guessing the political leanings of dead country icons.

Of course Big & Rich support McCain. They’re a disposable item, a real mongrel act.
Johnny Cash would not support McCain. He was smart. And sane

Apparently whomever wrote the headline didn’t bother to read the story. “It is appalling to me that people still want to invoke my father’s name, five years after his death, to ascribe beliefs, ideals, values and loyalties to him that cannot possibly be determined and to try to further their own agendas by doing so. Even I would not presume to say publicly what I ‘know’ he thought or felt. This is especially dangerous in the case of political affiliation. Your headline: “Would Johnny Cash Support John McCain? Roseanne Cash Says No”
That’s not at all what it says, in fact that’s not even what you say: “The moral of the story is maybe Rich should stick to turning Julio Iglesias Jr. into a Nashville star rather than guessing the political leanings of dead country icons.”
But your headline guesses at the leanings of Mr. Cash. Either you’re politicking for the brief reader, or you’re not paying attention. Either way, it’s misleading.

Let’s even the score: I’m sure Johnny Cash would have been a Barak Obama supporter if he was still around.

I’m with Misleading. Nowhere in this article does it say anything about Roseanne Cash saying no to Johnny Cash being a McCain supporter. God help us if musicians/voters are using the dead for voting advice anyway!
who cares | 8/20/2008, 2:21 pm EST
Who cares who Johnny Cash would have voted for? If your decision is influenced by that or by the opinion of Scarlett Johannsen, Will.I.Am, Big & Rich, or Eddie Vedder you are a flippin idiot.
Zman | 8/21/2008, 11:53 am EST
I have to agree with Misleading and who cares as well on this one. Would Johnny Cash Support John McCain? No one knows; do your own thinking America.

John Rich’s song goes like this….
“We’re all just raising Obama.
Get on a llama and go tell your mama
We’re all just raising Obama”.
I live in Nashville, I’m voting for Obama
and I’m glad John wrote his stupid McCain
song. It gives me a good laugh.

Anyone who supports McCain, Must Think Bush is a great President.
If more americans think this way than not then the majority of our country is truly STUPID.

Wow – it is amazing that the only vernacular Liberals can use when describing Republicans is with the words stupid, or dumb. Is that the extent of your vocabulary? Can you articulate your political opinions with the idiom of a cerebral human-being? Is that asking too much for anyone that may be fairly educated? In answering the question – why would Johnny Cash vote for McCain? Cash, though a great musician was a wannabe criminal. As a Republican we strive for civil values and the fortification of the constitution of the greatest democracy ever formed.

Republicans DON’t care about you, Americans. The sooner you realize that, the better prepared you will be for the next flood, the next layoff, the next invasion…..

I don’t think it matters who Johnny Cash would support. He was a good singer and not a political scholar. I never heard Roseanne sing but suspect she made it because she was his daughter. I would rather think for myself than listen to what Roseanne thinks her Dad might have done.It is your kind of thinking that allows a smooth talking trainee like Obama to have a chance to be a U.S. President. Horrors.

I think Johnny cash was a democrat. Listen to his songs where he sings about the poor and down trodden. Poor is not something Republicans care much about so I doubt he was a Republican. He saw first hand what poor was and he sang songs for the workin class. He also spoke out against the 2nd Bush war. In a time when singers like Toby Keith were painting their guitars red white and blue and trying to dial-in to the current patriotic moment in time, Johnny continued on with songs about the working man with no mention of corporations. He was Main Street not Wall Street. He was compassion not conservative. He was a democrat.

No one knows who Johnny Cash would support, but it is worth noting that Johnny campaigned for Al Gore.
