Britney Spears Among Nominees for VMA’s Video of the Year

8/15/08, 1:32 pm EST

It’s shaping up to be A Tale of Two VMAs for Britney Spears. A year after the singer had the audiences eyes rolling with a jaw-droppingly-bad performance of “Gimme More,” Brit will have a shot at redemption at this year’s VMA as she’s up for Video of the Year after her “Piece of Me” was named among the five nominees. Joining Spears in the top category are the Jonas Brothers‘ “Burnin Up,” Chris Brown’s Wrigley-sponsored “Forever,” the Pussycat Dolls‘ “When I Grow Up” and the Ting Tings‘ “Shut Up and Let Me Go.” Spears role at the awards show is still undefined, but her nomination likely guarantees she’ll be appearing at the September 7th live broadcast from Los Angeles. It’s not like she’s on tour or anything. She is crafting her “best work ever,” however.

The only reason Spears’ song was nominated is so she can appear at the VMAs and help increase viewership and ad revenue for MTV. None of her songs from her latest album were actually hits and the album didn’t really do so well. Wherever Britney goes, there’s controversy and MTV is exploiting her recent decline and loony behavior to help rake in the $$$ for themselves. That’s what it’s all about.

Wait a minute, I don’t wanna go home with any of these people. Why the hell are they even nominated?

Positivity | 8/15/2008, 6:02 pm EST

I’m really happy for Britney, in that she’s evidently making a complete 180 from where she was only 8 months ago (when we all saw her being wheeled out from out of her house in a gurney).

We all love a great comeback story and I fully believe that Britney is on the road to reclaiming her crown.

wtf, this are the best videos of the year?

wow | 8/15/2008, 11:17 pm EST

Actually Jughead, “Gimme More” and “Piece of me” were hits-even with all the radio stations that refused to play her music after the VMAs. MTV wants Brit there b/c everytime she’s there they have great ratings. No other celeb generates the same buzz as Britney whether she’s doing good, bad or ugly.

I agreed with Jughead
MTV is sucking what’s possible from Britney, she is just paying the price..Remember that she is a MTV made product sice 1999 ?

Where’s Weezer’s “Pork and Beans”, Erykah Badu’s “Honey” or Gnarls Barkley’s “Run”
With the exception of The Ting Tings’ “Shut Up and Let Me Go”, I think MTV messed up giving the people the control to pick the nominees this year.
I bet even MTV was going “Really???”

Joe | 8/16/2008, 6:51 pm EST

This is the first time I have not seen one second of any of the videos nominated.

i agree with jughead…
why do you think they let her preform last year? she obviously wasn’t ready.
it always comes down to the all mighty buck

Jarg | 8/17/2008, 10:20 am EST

The Ting Tings? Who the fuck are… I must be getting old…

Neka | 8/17/2008, 5:10 pm EST

MTV having the public to vote for the nominations was a horrible mistake .. WE DON’T KNOW WHAT WE DO !!!
There are industry people who do this for a living. Why don’t they just nominate the Youtube chipmunk.
Yeah that should win “Video Of The Year”.
All that said … Good luck MJB!!!

TheDasha | 8/17/2008, 6:11 pm EST

I just hope that people soon realize that most of the “winning” video’s are the ones that are being broad casted on MTV them selfs. -Great Videos that just didn’t get enough money or air time suffer.
It was stupid letting people pick. People suck at seeing talent.
Stick to crappy shows like “Americas Best Dance Crew” and stop letting stupid people pick out winners that don’t deserve it.

music videos are meaningless. and who really gives a flying fuck about the vmas? no one thats who.

shakespeare | 8/18/2008, 4:43 am EST

Ting-tings are the best out of the 5!

Hype | 8/18/2008, 10:30 am EST

It’s going to be Britney’s anyway…
Her Piece of Me is still the best among all 5…
